Christina shivered. After hearing<br />

Papa’s story about <strong>the</strong> shipwrecks, she<br />

was even more frightened to go boating in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mimi.<br />

“Cool!” Grant said. “I’m sure glad it’s<br />

not a lake m<strong>on</strong>ster.”<br />

Papa laughed and tousled Grant’s<br />

already messy bl<strong>on</strong>d hair. “<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re’s no such<br />

thing as a lake m<strong>on</strong>ster.”<br />

“Oh, <strong>the</strong>re just might be,” a voice said.<br />

It was <strong>the</strong> hotel desk clerk. “Sorry for butting<br />

in,” he c<strong>on</strong>tinued, “but <strong>the</strong>re’s a local legend<br />

about a m<strong>on</strong>ster named Bessie. She’s sort of<br />

like Nessie, <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ster in Loch Ness in<br />

Scotland. Well, mariners have been seeing our<br />

Bessie for centuries, up and down Lake Erie.”<br />

Christina felt goose bumps rise <strong>on</strong> her<br />

arms and legs. She leaned over and whispered<br />

to Grant, “<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> text message!”<br />

Grant shivered, and slipped his hand<br />

into Christina’s. Her fingernails dug into<br />

his palm.<br />
