36 | April 11, 2019 | the tinley Junction sports tinleyjunction.com AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP Andrew baseball team continues to play crazy 8s JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor When District 230 baseball rivals battle it out, no lead is safe. Earlier in the season, Andrew had an 8-0 lead against Sandburg and soon the score was 8-8. Andrew went on to win, 16-9. So on April 10, when the Thunderbolts trailed Stagg, 8-0, there was some concern. But there was also a been-there-donethat spirit and Andrew rallied and pulled off a 10-9 stunner in Tinley Park. Jimmy Carey drove in three runs, Josh Kirnbauer and Justin Kamholz each drove in two and Anthony Montalbano scored a pair of runs. Eric Schultz earned the win, Ryan Fitzgerald picked up a save and Tom Schiller made a running catch in the outfield to potentially prevent two runs from scoring in the final frame. Speaking of wild games Andrew’s softball team continues to put up – and give up – big numbers. The Bolts had 28 hits in a 17-12 victory over Plainfield East on Tuesday, April 2. Kaitlin Tholl had two homers and seven RBI in the slugfest while Kaitlin Lynch, Grace Lenderink, Ryen Meuris and Victoria Watkins each had four hits. The next day, Tholl hit her third homer in two days in a 6-1 loss to Bolingbrook. Early success in the SCC Tinley Park’s softball team outscored three South Suburban Conference opponents by a combined score of 16-3. In a 6-1 victory over Shepard, Jules Gomez struck out eight Shepard hitters and Emily Gorski drove in three runs. In a 3-1 win over Shepard, Riley Schultz and Gomez each had two hits and Gorski and Gomez combined for the victory. In a 7-1 win over Evergreen Park, Gomez struck out 14 batters and drove in three runs while Ashley Tipping had three hits. Andrew’s tennis wins battle of TP Andrew’s boys tennis team beat visiting Tinley Park in a crosstown battle on April 3. Andrew singles player Eric Armendariz and the doubles teams of Noah Berchman-Ryan Croce, Nathan Dring-Eric Schaeflein and Mike Healy- Dave Manguerra came up victorious. No. 1 singles player Olympio Aluka was Tinley’s lone winner. Quick hits The Thunderbolts’ girls soccer team, seeded eighth in the PepsiCo Showdown, dropped a 2-1 decision to top-seeded Wheaton- Warrenville South on Saturday, April 6 in Schaumburg. … Tinley Park’s baseball team opened the SCC with a 3-0 mark. … Andrew’s boys volleyball team is off to a 7-1 start … Jack Ballard (800 meter run), Conor Michaels (long jump) and Peyton Benes (400) were individual track winners for Andrew at the Argo Invitational. … Tinley Park’s 800 relay team and Rebecca Beltran (discus) were winners at Andrew’s girls track meet. Anthony Maltobano, leading off against Stagg, and his Andrew teammates staged a huge rally to beat the Chargers after facing an 8-0 deficit.
