Bats
Lets learn about the different type of Irish bats, what they do and
why they do it.
Bats are the only mammals that can really fly. Their wings are
like human hands but they have very long fingers and the skin is
stretched out between them.
Bats are great at hanging upside down. When they hang upside
down their little feet lock into place so that they don’t get tired and
fall down.
Bats hibernate all through winter but love warm weather when all
of the bugs are out, they can eat nearly 3000 bugs a night if they
are really hungry. To find bugs they use Echolocation. This means
that they shout using high pitched squeaks and listen for echoes to
tell how far away things are.
Bats can be many different shapes and sizes, but most of our bats
are very small. We have eight different types of Bats in Ireland.
