HOMECOMING: Father and daughter enjoying time together after three days<br />
apart.<br />
Daddy’s home<br />
WELL, I didn’t manage<br />
that dream of a sleep-in.<br />
But after three nights<br />
away from Vittoria and<br />
Laura, even being forced<br />
awake before sunrise in my<br />
own bed felt good.<br />
As I said in my last<br />
column, I was away<br />
competing in the dragon<br />
boat nationals at Lake<br />
Karapiro (go Waimak)!<br />
It was the longest I’ve<br />
been away from Vittoria.<br />
Although the break from<br />
all-day, everyday parenting<br />
was nice, I missed it like I<br />
never thought I would.<br />
One night I woke up in<br />
the wee hours just freaking<br />
out that I couldn’t find<br />
Vittoria or even hear her.<br />
It took me a while to chill<br />
out and remember where<br />
I was.<br />
Is this something that<br />
will just happen now?<br />
Luckily this is <strong>2019</strong> so I<br />
could use video calling to<br />
see the family each day.<br />
It was really cute seeing<br />
how excited Vittoria got to<br />
see my face.<br />
She would do this little<br />
jiggle, smile and giggle<br />
dance before getting back<br />
to whatever she was doing,<br />
throwing little smiles my<br />
way while Laura and I<br />
talked.<br />
Eventually she would,<br />
however, try and hang up<br />
the call. I guess you can<br />
have too much dad.<br />
I thought she would<br />
just about explode when<br />
I got home, but she was<br />
way too engrossed in the<br />
Wiggles when I got in the<br />
door.<br />
After her song finished<br />
she started warming up to<br />
me again and it wasn’t long<br />
until she was back to being<br />
cuddly and excited to be<br />
around me.<br />
I think out of the two<br />
of them, Laura was most<br />
excited to have me home.<br />
The weekend had included<br />
the unholy meeting of<br />
arbitrary toddler routine<br />
changes and the end of<br />
VITTORIA<br />
& Matt<br />
daylight saving.<br />
Not to mention poor<br />
weather.<br />
Nothing like being<br />
trapped indoors with a<br />
grumpy toddler who woke<br />
you up multiple times<br />
overnight before deciding<br />
4am was playtime.<br />
My wife is a saint.<br />
Bubs and I reconnected<br />
on a daddy/daughter day<br />
with some friends over<br />
from Australia at the<br />
petting zoo Arion Farm.<br />
Nothing quite like<br />
being chased by ducks<br />
and having a sheep try and<br />
eat your hand, to rekindle<br />
the spark of daddy’s-girlness.<br />
