THAILAND AIRPORTS
Thailand’s air transport has grown rapidly since the World
War II. The first Thai airport was Don Mueang International
Airport, which started providing service since in 1914 and
was closed in 2006 when Suvarnabhumi International Airport
was officially opened. However, Don Mueang Airport was
reopened again in 2007 for domestic flights.
These days we have many international airlines from many
countries all over the world operating from Don Mueang
and Suvarnabhumi, making these some of the most
important airports in South East Asia.
There are also international airports in tourist popular
provinces of Thailand such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai,
Phuket, Hat Yai, Udon Thani, and Krabi.
This network of airports bolsters the Thai tourism industry
and encourages those tourists who don’t want to spend too
much of their time travelling by bus, van, or boat.
9
CURRENCY
Baht (Baht) is the currency of Thailand. The coins are
1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent, 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht. Coins of 25
and 50 cent, 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht are coin. Used for general
circulation
Coins 1, 5 and 10 cent are not issued for general circulation.
But only within the bank. There are currently 20 Baht, 50
Baht, 100 Baht, 500 Baht, and 1,000 Baht each.
FOODS
Thai cuisine is well known for its spiciness, with Som Tam
(a spicy papaya salad) being a famous example. In fact, however,
the secret to Thai food is a balance of five flavors: sour, sweet,
salty, bitter, and spicy. Some Thai dishes have a careful blend of
all these tantalizing tastes. Others are served with something to
help deal with the overpowering spiciness. For example, Tom Yum
Goong, which is sour and spicy, is often paired with an omelet
or rice. This could be the reason rice is always part of a Thai
meal.
As well as many herbs and spices used in Thai food, fish
sauce is often used in a similar way salt is, as it mellows the
taste. This means vegetarians will have to take this into
account and be more careful when choosing food in Thailand.
There is a great variety of Thai food for you to try, both main
dishes and desserts. You can also try local foods, which are different
in each part of the country. Northern Thai meals usually
feature sticky rice, Nam Prik (spicy chili paste), fresh vegetable,
and soup, northeastern Thai meals are famous for their spicy
and sour dishes and an essential condiment Pla Ra (fermented
fish sauce), while traditional southern foods are well-known
for their herbs and spices.
There is also a lot of Chinese influence. Many Chinese restaurants
and fusion foods exist in Thailand side by side with the
authentic Thai cuisine restaurants.
10
TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS
There are various options of Thailand travel provided for
tourists – by land, by air, and by boat.
Land
Traveling on the road is the main procedure going through
provinces in Thailand.
Public transport: either long-distance or short- distance
trips in Bangkok or other provinces, tourists can travel around
by bus, by train, by sky train, by subway, by van, and by Song
Taew (small pick-up truck with two rows of bench).
Taxi: Bangkok and big provinces have metered taxis.
Tuk Tuk: a three-wheeled motorcycle which becomes a
symbol of Thailand and can be found around Bangkok and in
some provinces.
Motorcycle Taxi: motorcycle taxis can be found near street
intersections or small allies for quick transport and short
distances.
Rental car and motorcycle: visitors who want to have independent
travel or do not want to waste their time waiting
for public transport can rent a car or a motorcycle from local
companies as well as international chains. Some companies
also provide a driver for tourist’s convenience and safety.
Vehicle rental companies can be found in big cities, airports,
and bus or train stations.
Traveling by car, motorcycle and bicycle is quite convenient for
tourists because there are traffic signs available both Thai and
English languages.
Boat
Thailand has two long coastlines – the Gulf of Thailand and the
Andaman coast islands. Also, there are many rivers and canals
in Thailand including in Bangkok which once was called ‘the
Venice of the East’. The long-tail boats are a main transport on
rivers and canals in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Visitors
also have a boat trip or river cruise in Bangkok or a trip for
snorkeling, fishing or squid fishing in other provinces.
Air
There are many domestic air routes in Bangkok and provincial
capitals. Two main airports in Bangkok are Don Mueang
Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport. Moreover, for those who
want to have more privacy and independence, they can rent a
private plane.
Ride an Elephant
Elephants are an important part of Thai culture.
Thailand itself has more than 70 elephant camps,
most located in the north. You’ll soon find that every
guesthouse, travel agent, and tuk-tuk driver seems to
be peddling a different elephant experience.
Not all elephant camps are equal! With so many elephant
camps all around, it can be hard to choose one,
but we hope our brief info below can help you out.
You can enjoy elephant rides at Ayutthaya, Pai,
Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, or anywhere else you go
in Thailand. Almost every tourist destination offers
you different sorts of elephant tours.
And don’t worry if during your vacation you are not
going to cross the whole country from the south to
the north. Whether you are in Phuket or in Pattaya,
there is the abundance of choice.
Canal tour in Bangkok
In the old days, Bangkok was comprised of hundreds of
small canals or “khlong” in Thai and local people mainly
traveled by water. They relied heavily on the waterways
as this mode of transportation is faster, more convenient
and efficient than the land route
Today, most canals in Bangkok have been filled in and
converted into streets. However, on the other bank of the
Chao Phraya River, our old capital Thonburi which covers
an area west of the river still retains many of its larger
khlongs.
On this side of the city, it is still possible to see the fields,
orchards, small family farms and orchid nurseries that are
located in the ever-expanding metropolis of Bangkok.
Small Teak Boat Adventure
A canal tour is a “must do” for people who like to see
the traditional Thai ways of living and get a special feeling
of Bangkok which can only be obtained by taking a
canal tour in Bangkok.
The tour will take you to the old capital in the Thonburi
side, a more intimate way to look at the old Siam, with
many stops to let you experience the historical, cultural
and interactive lives of the local canal people.
Normally the tour will set as a small group on teak boat to
make an unforgettable journey with a mode of transportation
that is now rarely used.
During the sustainable boat tour, you will enjoy magnificent
views of lush greenery without leaving Bangkok.
FESTIVALS
IN THAILAND
Note: many festivals are planned according to the lunar calendar, so the exact date varies each year.
Everywhere – April
Water Festival (Songkran)
This is the biggest, longest and most fun festival in Thailand…
and maybe the world! Songkran is a three-day water fight throughout
the whole country. Wild scenes of exuberance can be seen
throughout the Kingdom, with music, dancing, drinking and
people drenched from head to toe. Water guns, hose pipes,
buckets – in fact, anything you can get your hands on can be
used to splash people. One thing is for certain: you will get wet!
No matter where you are in Thailand, from the 13th to the
15th April, you will be walking distance from some kind of fun
celebration.
Songkran is an annual festival which takes place over three days
during the traditional Thai New Year, April 13th-15th (in almost
all provinces). The official Songkran festival lasts three days but
in reality the whole week is taken over by a mass celebration as
the whole country shuts down for a momentous water fight.
Wild scenes of exuberance can be seen throughout the Kingdom
with music, dancing, drinking and people drenched from head
to toe. Water guns, hose pipes, buckets, in fact, anything you can
get your hands on can be used to splash people, and one thing is
for certain: you will get wet!
Everywhere – April
As April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand, everyone
gets involved with this country-wide water fight and it brings
great relief from the soaring temperatures. Songkran started as a
Buddhist tradition, using a light sprinkling of water to symbolise
purification but, as time went by, people began splashing each
other in a more playful manner until recent years, when the
entire country becomes one almighty water fight celebrated by
millions! This is the ultimate guide to Songkran, detailing where
to go, what to know and where to party in all the main areas of
Thailand:
Ghost Festival (Phi Ta Khon)
Combining religious traditions, local handicrafts and fun-loving
party atmosphere, Phi Ta Khon is a three-day festival that’s
renowned for the colourful masks worn by thousands of locals.
The masks are ghastly, stretched faces with phallic noses, decorated
in bright, gaudy colours. The origin of the festival is a mixture of
animist and Buddhist beliefs. It is supposed to recreate the legend
of when a party was thrown that was so fun, everyone wanted to
attend – living or dead. We don’t really know the significance of
the phallic noses. The Ghost Festival is held on the weekend of
the 6th full moon of the lunar calendar. It usually has the main
parade on the Friday (dressing up as a ghost optional), with pageants
and music on the Saturday and Buddhist ceremonies on the Sunday.
Dan Sai, Loei Province – June or July
Located in Dan Sai Town in Loei Province, the Ghost Festival is
quite hard to get to. It’s easiest from Udon Thani (a three-hour
bus journey) or Chiang Mai (five-hour bus journey). From Bangkok,
buses leave from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal about five
times a day. It’s around a seven-hour journey.
14
Chiang Mai’s Lantern Festival
(Yi Peng Festival)
Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai (sometimes written as ‘Yi Peng’)
is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month ever
year, which normally means mid-way through November, but
this can vary. The Yee Peng lantern festival is held in November
every year.
Loy Krathong is preceded by Yee Peng , during which people
release floating lanterns into the sky. It is during Yee Peng that
you see locals’ homes and public places decked out in colourful
hanging lanterns and flag decorations. The act of releasing the
lantern and krathong symbolizes letting go of all ills and misfortunes
in the previous year, and Buddhists also believe that if
you make a wish when you set off the lantern, it will come true
(but only if you do good deeds the following year, of course).
Chiang Mai - November
As part of this festival of lights, there are plenty of other activities
that happen all over Chiang Mai. These include traditional
Thai dance shows, the official ‘Yee Peng Parade’ around the Old
City gate and down Tha Phae Road, live music and handicraft
sessions.
You can also expect lots of food vendors setting up, firecrackers,
fireworks, and hordes of tourists with selfie sticks (particularly
around the Tha Phae Gate area).
Chiang Mai - November
Rocket Festival (Boon Bang Fai )
In the farming communities of Issan (north-eastern Thailand),
rocket festivals are important events attended by entire villages
as they’re considered the last big ‘knees-up’ before the planting
season begins. The rockets are meant to encourage the gods to send
plentiful rains to help the precious rice crops grow, with teams
building ever more elaborate rockets. They are paraded around on
the first day of the festival before being launched high into the air
throughout the weekend. Supposedly, huge sums are gambled on
who can build the best rocket, but considering gambling is illegal
in Thailand we can’t confirm this. If any rocket fails to launch, the
builders of said rocket are playfully thrown into a mud bath as
punishment.
The main rocket festival is in Yasothon Province, although many
districts hold their own smaller rocket festivals. Live folk music,
fastidious drinking of local rice wine, beauty pageants and a party
atmosphere accompanies every rocket festival.
Yasothorn Province – June or July
15
Buffalo Racing Festival (Wing Kwai)
Buffalo racing, and the festivities that go on afterwards, make
this one of Thailand’s best festivals. This tradition has been taking
place for well over 100 years and now brings in the crowds – Thais
and foreigners – from far and wide. The race course is around 100
metres long, located right in front of Chonburi City Hall. Crowds
line the race course and cheer on the jockeys, who ride bareback
on their trusty beasts. It is amazing to see how fast the massive
beasts can actually run!
Chonburi – October
Chonburi is quite easy to reach, around one hour away from both
Bangkok and Pattaya. The buffalo racing is the main attraction,
but there are plenty more bovine activities to enjoy, such as a buffalo
beauty contest, buffalo decorations and muay Thai demonstrations.
There’s a small fair with rides for smaller children, and other fete
games – definitely look out for the greasy pole game, which asks
participants to climb up the pole to win 500 baht (or try to, at
least). While it doesn’t quite compare to the prestige of Ascott, the
Melbourne Cup or the Kentucky Derby, Chonburi’s annual buffalo
race festival is still a hugely fun day out.
Lopburi Monkey Banquet
Lopburi - November
Located 150 km north of Bangkok, Lopburi is best known for its
packs of monkeys, thanks to the central temple being overrun by
the pesky simians. It’s a popular tourist activity to feed the monkeys
but, during November, the simple bags of sunflower seed you
can buy are replaced by something much grander. There’s a huge
banquet laid out for the approximately 3,000 monkeys and they
are allowed to feast on 4 tonnes of fruits, vegetables and other
treats. It’s a surreal experience that has traces of the Mad Hatter’s
Tea Party. Do be aware that the Lopburi monkeys will climb on
you and try to take food or valuables from you, so you should
keep your wits about you.
Vegetarian Festival
Despite the name, Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival is famous to
world travellers because of the extreme acts undertaken by some
locals. Especially gruesome is the body mortification, by way of
swords and spiked objects cutting through participants’ cheeks
and other body parts, along with walking over hot coals. The
belief is that Chinese gods will protect you from harm in return
for painful demonstrations of your beliefs.
Phuket - October
The ceremonies of the festival take place in the vicinity of the six
Chinese temples scattered throughout Phuket. The main temple
is Jui Tui Shrine, not far from the Fresh Market in Phuket Town.
This annual festival takes place every October but, if you’re
sensitive to the sight of blood, you probably should give this one
a miss!
16
Wonderfruit Music and Arts Festival
Okay, the only thing ‘Thai’ about this festival is the location, but
it is the country’s premier music and arts festival, taking after
similar events in the UK and US – think Glastonbury or Coachella
and you’re on the right lines. Wonderfruit usually takes place in
December, on the outskirts of Pattaya, and welcomes European
and American artists to headline, with many local bands playing,
too. There’s also yoga, meditation, arts and pop-up restaurants by
some of Bangkok’s best chefs.
The Wonderfruit Festival Pattaya is a three-day eco-friendly music
and arts extravaganza on the outskirts of the city. Combining
Thai, Asian and western cultures, the fantastic performances and
wide-ranging workshops give it a Western-style festival vibe,
similar to Glastonbury in the UK or Woodstock in the US,
though with significantly less mud! As with Glastonbury, the main
attraction is obviously the music, with hip-hop, alt-R&B, Thai
folk and EDM music playing on three striking stages created by
international designers. In past years, a lengthy bill of local groups
has been headlined by big-name performers from the USA, UK,
Germany, India, Japan and Singapore. There are also a number of
remarkable contemporary dance performances.
Pattaya - December
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year brings one of the most exhilarating celebrations
to Yaowaraj, which is officially the Chinatown of Bangkok. The
narrow, bustling alleys of Chinatown are always a fun place to
explore but, during Chinese New Year, things are ramped up a
notch.
The entire length of the street (and surrounding alleys) comes to
life, with crowds of worshippers, exploding firecrackers, dragon
dancers and families of Chinese descent, who gather to partake
in the street fanfare as well as enjoy sumptuous Chinese banquets.
The best place to experience the festival in Bangkok is at Wat
Mangkon Kamalawat on Charoen Krung Street, at the northern
edge of Chinatown.
Bangkok – January
Candle Festival
This large festival in one of Issan’s biggest cities is a nice mix of art,
culture and celebration. Up to 10 huge wax sculptures are crafted
by international teams of artists, mixing traditional art with more
modern, abstract creations. The wax works are paraded around on
floats, accompanied by dancers and traditional folk music.
Principally, this is a religious festival on a sacred Buddhist holiday,
when followers donate items to monks, but there is still a party
atmosphere throughout the city. Remember that no alcohol is
allowed to be sold in Thailand on Buddhist holidays, but it can
be consumed. Most locals will stock up the day before and will be
discreet about drinking out of respect for monks and devout
Buddhists.
“ The elegant surrounded
by nature”
Z9 Resort
This resort is truly Maldive in Thailand.
“Z9” (Zinine) is inpired by the name of Mount Sinai
or “Tour Sina” in Arabic which was mentioned in the
“Alliance of Sinai” as Moses’ mount.
Namely, he -Moses in Jewish and Christian dimensions
or Prophet Musa (a) in Islamic faith - went into its cave to
meditate and receive the so-called “Ten Commandments”
from God. At that time, he had to rule about 10 million
peoples of the holy mount among the conflict and chaos.
Consequently, Mount Sinai was considered as Moses’ sanctuary
for considerating his mind and recharging his body and soul,
after that he turned back to accomplish his greatest mission.
Z9 Resort similarly loves to present the peaceful shelter for
rehabilitating your physical and mental goal with the
philosophy: “RECHARGE YOUR LIFE ENERGY, RENEW
YOUR SPIRIT” at Z9 before you step back to your real life.
Mirasierra Khao Yai
Mirasierra is a Spanish word meaning to look at the mountain
range. As the meaning says, we are situated amidst the lush
green mountain range of Khaoyai. Mirasierra Khao Yai is
a cozy bed and breakfast-like resort inspired by the warm
southern Spanish Hacienda architecture. The nine rooms – 7
deluxe, 1 suite, and 1 grand suite – are with the heartwarming
view where you can sip a cup of warm drink looking at the
horses prancing the green grass in Khaoyai’s breezy weather.
The project originated from 3 city-born cousins, who wish
one day could settle down in the country side, amongst the
mountains and fresh air. The property was built to be cozy
and home-like as a result – nothing to feel formal about it.
stables and equestrian activities for visitors to experience such as:
pull-along rides, horse riding, and off-road horse carriage.
For your convenience, the restaurant is available within the
resort area from breakfast to dinner. The resort is run by the
family, and thus the food are of home-cooked recipes. We support
the locals and source our fresh greens and fruits locally.
Another facility that will be available soon is the swimming pool.
As we hope that we can cater to family with young children, we
have started the next phase to build a cozy size swimming pool
for all to relax. We are hoping that it will be available before the
end of the year 2019.
Accordingly, we have shaped our service to be friendly and
would like our customers to feel that they have arrive at their
home. Other than the home-like areas, we also have horse
