Glencoe’s Sustainability
Task Force hits three years
Submitted by Hall Healy,
Glencoe Sustainability Task
Force
In 2018, the Glencoe
Sustainability Task Force
continued identifying and
implementing a variety
of activities to enhance
Glencoe’s environmental
and financial sustainability.
These efforts were
successful in large part
due to collaborating between
the Village Board
and staff, School District
35, Glencoe Park District,
Glencoe Public Library,
Chamber of Commerce,
Glencoe Rotary, Glencoe
Community Garden and
local businesses.
Of major significance,
the Active Transportation
Alliance, a Chicagobased
nonprofit organization,
conducted an
in-depth study to identify
crossings, roads and sidewalks
considered unsafe
for students, other pedestrians,
bikers and drivers.
The study, paid for
by the Village, District
35 and the Park District,
included numerous public
meetings and analysis
by transportation experts.
The result was a
very inclusive process
and a report making specific
recommendations as
to which areas could be
improved from a safety
perspective. Some of the
steps are being implemented
in 2019.
The Task Force and
staff worked with the Village’s
residential waste
hauler, LRS, to develop
stickers to put onto recycling
bins, describing
what materials can go in
them. These stickers are
being sent to residents
with a letter explaining
their purpose and providing
additional sources of
information. As part of
redoing certain downtown
areas, Staff is looking
at where best to put
recycling bins, along with
improved signage designating
what goes in them.
Bins also are being placed
in strategic locations during
special events such as
the recent Sesquicentennial
kick-off.
LRS is contracted with
to pick up compostables
during spring, summer
and fall; Resident Fred
Miller is spear-heading a
program to have Glencoe
Community Garden pick
up composting from local
businesses, which now
Semi-Annual Clean-Up
cleaning? Dispose of your
large household items that
are not included as part
of normal garbage collection
on the next Clean-Up
Day on May 8. Items may
include furniture, appliances
and boxes. Unaccepted
items include:
electronics, hazardous
waste (oil-based paint,
gas, chemicals, etc.),
building material (wood,
lumber, drywall, etc.) and
landscape waste (trees,
branches, logs, leaves,
etc.). Please place items
at the curb no sooner the
Sunday, May 5.
includes the Guildhall
Restaurant, Hometown
Coffee and Writers Theatre.
A “ravine alliance” was
created to address ravine
degradation on one specific
ravine. Meetings were
held to discuss causes
of deterioration, reasons
for addressing them, and
what to do about the situation,
including a study
to identify current conditions
and costs of repair.
Recently, the Village was
approached by the Lake
County Stormwater Management
District to fund
such studies for all Glencoe
ravines.
As one step to assist
residents in reducing energy
usage, a “Meatless
Monday” campaign was
initiated by presenting
information to Glencoe
restaurants. Some have
already responded enthusiastically,
with meatless
offerings.
A window sticker and
information campaign
was developed to present
to Glencoe’s businesses
to encourage environmentally
sustainable
management. Over thirty
businesses have now
completed a survey and
Arbor Day Planting
Celebrate Arbor Day
with the Village and District
planting ceremony on Friday,
April 26, at 2:15 p.m.
at South School, 266 Linden
Ave. This event is just
one of the many ways the
Village shows its commitment
to Glencoe's special
received stickers. Look
for them and thank the
business when shopping
there.
The Task Force has
looked at various ways to
reinforce water conservation
and reduce negative
impacts of stormwater,
the latter including bioswales
and rain gardens.
The Task Force now has
two student volunteers
from Central School.
They are contributing
very positively to our efforts,
most notably with
their opinions about how
best to motivate students
regarding sustainability.
The Task Force is currently
evaluating how to
further focus and leverage
activities most beneficially
for the community,
through goal-setting
and reviewing results.
Awareness building is
part of each initiative and
a variety of methods are
being employed, including
regular updates in the
the Village's dedication,
