CCE TOP BIKES 2015


There is a certain amount of dedication, skills

and determination behind the creation of any

music video – let alone a music video that will

get the attention of an international audience and

explain the passion behind customizing a Harley

without words AND compressed into a time slot

of less than four minutes of a song! But when

the result finally hits the screen, all the work is

forgotten! In July 2014, Custom Chrome Europe

filmed their first „Music Promo Clip“, shooting

locations and the riding performed in and around

the then brand-new warehouse in Grolsheim

near Bingen, with all logistics within reach. That

story told – the warehouse in routine operation

and busy like never before – it was challenging

to create a follow-up story that would match, probably

even surpass the very successful „Sexy

Thing“ video. With an unprecendented effort, the

CCE team shipped six „Bolt On and Ride“ custombikes,

CCE staff members and a complete

Rock Band to South France and into the middle

of mayhem that is hitting the coastline around

Port Grimaud, when the Harley-Season starts

with the now international Harley-Davidson Festival.

„THIS IS“ was shot in only 3 days – not

stuntmen, no doubles, no safety net!

The Custom Chrome Europe Party on Friday evening inside the

„Les Prairies de la Mer“ has been a focus point for a lot of French

and Italian Custombike dealers, for which the „Harley-Davidson

Euro Festival“ at Port Grimaud has become a welcome „Spring

Break“ in the busy customizing season. Little did they know that

this year they would not just receive the drinks, steaks and German

„Bratwurst“ hospitality, but also would become co-starring

in CCE‘s new „Customizing Promotion Clip“, although only for

fractions of a second. When „Ruby Shock“ started their first-ever

„unplugged“ gig in the hut that marks the „center stage“, most

visitors realized that something special is going on this year – and

subsequently took the invitation to see the band „live on stage“ at

next days Cogolin „Chopper & Co“ party more serious...

„When we were looking for a successor for last years „Sexy Thing“

video, the „Harley-Davidson Euro Festival“ soon came to mind“,

recalls CCE Managing Director Andreas Scholz – the event has

been a regular date on the CCE calendar to talk to the dealers,

usually without the burden of booth and displays, but nevertheless

serious business for the French and partially the Italian and Spanish

markets too. In 2013, the five „Bolt On and Ride“ motorcycles

were extensively photographed and ridden during the event: So

most of the scenic locations around Grimaud – and consequently

also the Saint Tropez peninsula beaches, Sainte Maxime and

the mountains behind – were „charted territory“ for the Custom

Chrome Europe team. The 2013 shootings took the BOAR bikes

as far as up the Grand Canyon du Verdon south rim – and several

team members were familiar with the small country roads up and

down the French Rivera. „South France in May is usually a good

choice for sunshine“, states Scholz – and that turned out to be

true.

Before any Bratwurst or Harley was shipped the 1100+ kilometers

from Grolsheim to Grimaud, extensive „brainstorming“ took place

at CCE‘s marketing department: Just by chance, Andreas Scholz

has stumbled privately into a concert of Stuttgart-based rock band

„Ruby Shock“ and was awed by the raw and original performance.

The contact soon intensified and after considering a new song or

modifying the text of an existing tune, band and boss settled for

„This Is“ – which turned out to be a great choice, since the story of

the video and the text fit in almost perfect harmony. Ruby Shock

would get a great music video and Custom Chrome Europe would

get great music without expensive payments to music publishers

for a time-limited use of the song. Deal!

That this would be a true win-win situation first came to light on

March 21st 2015, when „Ruby Shock“ performed during the first

„CCE Open House“ in Grolsheim and literally blew away the audience!

Now everybody was convinced: This video would ROCK!

Next stop Cannes? The famous Film festival started just after the Harley-Davidson Parties in Grimaud and Cogolin!


Filming the riding session while there is a Harley-Davidson event going on – let alone normal traffic along the

coastal roads of the Côte d‘Azur – was challenging, to say the least. It did came handy that at the shooting

location a construction site blocked the road and allowed only one-way traffic.

By then, not a word on the script was written, the BOAR bikes just

uncovered and the „Les Prairies de la Mer“ campground refused

any written confirmation that CCE would get the now 4 bungalows

necessary to house the 20+ neccessary riders, staff and band. Jeremy

DiStefano, French-speaking CCE marketing staff member

spent countless hours on the telephone for „chicken shit“, while

major problems – like asking the local Harley-customizer and V-

Twin specialist „Deep South Motors“ to use his shop and having

„Ruby Shock“ performing as main act on the stage of Cogolin‘s

„Chopper & Co“ party – turned out to be a lesser hazzle. Meanwhile,

Marketing Manager Axel Scherer worked out the basic ideas

in a script: This time, Veronica should get her own „Custom Ride“.

While in the „Sexy Thing“ video she was only sitting passenger

behind CCE‘s Spanish sales rep Jaime Sagrado, she not just had

to ride a highly customized Harley-Davidson, she had to ride it in

close formation and – knowing the Harley-event in Grimaud – under

often challenging traffic conditions!

As it turned out, Veronica‘s motorcycle skills soon lived up to the

task ahead – and after three days of filming and riding the JB

Motorcycles built „Blockbuster“ Sportster, based on a 1992 Evolution,

it was more difficult to get her „off“ the bike. By then, she was

riding the „Billy Bike“ position like Dennis Hopper in „Easy Rider“

and „we are looking forward to see her performing the „backflip“

stunts in the next sequel...“ grins a confident Andreas Scholz, who

was piloting the „Big Ship“, Harley-Factory‘s 2015 „Road Glide“

Bagger for filming and photo-shoots.

„We already realized in 2014 what skills are available in the CCE

staff – and we are talking all departments – when we produced

„Sexy Thing“ in very short time almost completely with CCE staff,

which also stepped in for musicians with their own instruments“,

states Andreas Scholz, „so we were confident that – given favou-

DETAILS: Shooting all cuts and variations of the the „breakdown“ scene was complex and took some time

under the blazing sun. Filming included the members of „Ruby Shock“ and even their band bus. With a

little bit of luck, the parking lot near the beach was not as crowded as during the holiday season...

...when thousands of visitors crowd the beaches.

and repeated to be on the safe side.

While the 2014 clip was filmed around the new CCE headquarter,

it was clear that the shelves and tools of Europe‘s biggest V-Twin

only dedicated warehouse would be 1.100 km away. So necessary

tools and accessories had to be transported to Grimaud: Oil,

fuel, jerry cans (try fuelling up in Grimaud when the Harley-Party

is going on...) for the small Sportster tanks – not to forget grill

hard- and software for the party!

Filming at „Deep South Motors“ in Cogolin/France: The Independent CCE dealer stepped in to pose for the „Customizer“.


When the first call for „Action“ came on Thursday, May 7th, the

tension soon gave way to routine: „Cut“, „Repeat“, Action“, „in the

pocket“ shouts came in rapid succession, working the way through

a meanwhile several pages strong script that listed all scenes and

their possible locations, all of which may have changed during the

last two years when they were used for the 2013 BOAR photoshoots.

Some of the traffic diversions even worked for the benefit of

filming, as it minimized traffic around the scenic „Pointe de Sardinaux“

location. Cogolin‘s „Deep South Motors“ not just turned out

to be a great location in the middle of this small village – owner

Laurent had a „fit for Hollywood“ collection of cool US cars and

custombikes outside his shop which added „atmosphere“. With

the weather staying on the sunny side, filming continued for three

full days, there was little if any time to participate at any activity

or concert of the buzzing Harley-Festival. Only on Saturday, with

much of the riding cuts „in the box“, the team had the time to enjoy

the „Chopper & Co“ party at downtown Cogolin – an one-day Old

School event that was the background for the „hand over“ scene

as well as the main performance of „Ruby Shock“ for the cool

audience. The sun was setting behind the hills when the last yell

„cut“ signaled that the last cut was „in the box“ – in time and with

surprisingly little problems...

The „happy end“ extended to „Deep South Motors“ who won a

„Best of Show“ trophy for his latest custom creation and to a (not

present) frenchman, who won an EMD-customized Sportster,

using almost the same covers and components as CCE‘s „Blockbuster“.

Not to forget an exhausted but satisfied band who delivered

a stunning performance under the sun of South France!

Ruby Shock surely made some international fans in Cogolin!

– his true workload would soon begin: In the cutting room...

French-American friendship!

Filming the last scenes plus the „Ruby Shock“ concert in the summer heat of the crowded Cogolin Custom Show wasn‘t easy!


The small town center of Cogolin was just packed with motorcycles! The „handover“ scene had to be shot in

the middle of bikeshow mayhem! EMD was also present and raffled away one of their EMD-cover equipped tp

custombikes (BOTTOM MIDDLE), while „Ruby Shock“ was preparing for their performance!

BLOCKBUSTER by JB Motorcycles

JB Motorcycles in Elmshorn, north of Hamburg, took on the task

of converting an „old nail“ into this tasty „New School“ Chopper

which is – believe it or not – only parts that have been introduced

after the turn of the Millennium! A bike that nevertheless

takes you back in time, when Gary Glitter, Slade, T-Rex and

The Sweet rocked the charts with their new sound: Glam Rock

is back – on two wheels! As the „Ladies Ride“ for Veronica, the

bike was long held „under cover“ before the filming, only to be

presented at the CCE Open House Party in March. Despite not

being a routine Harley rider, Veronica soon performed flawlessly

when introduced to the motorcycle in Grimaud.

If there is one motorcycle in the HD line that truly deserves the

term „Muscle Bike“, it would be the FXDF „Fat Bob“. Compact in

style, one of the lowest riding positions of all Big Twins, looking

„ready to go“ even when parked. Only a small but dedicated clientele

is asking for this model – most of which usually add plenty

of displacement or hp to the „Macho Machine“. For years,

basically since 2006, the „Fat Bob“ has been overshadowed by

the FXDX „Street Bob“ – which has certainly been sold in greater

numbers – but there are quite a number of FXDF‘s bobbing

around. Enough to have a 2012 model year bike customized for

the 2015 „Bolt On and Ride“ bikes of Custom Chrome Europe:

Wheel manufacturer TTS took on the task and completely turned

around the character of the „Macho Bike“!

Former European Champion Tobias Guckel of TGS created a world

class Sportster „Café Racer“ from a 2006 model year XL 883R – and

pumped some real horsepower in it using S&S‘ 1200 cc „Big Bore“

kit: „Speedfreak“ is a superb „Café Racer“ interpretation that has

both - style and performance. But the stock base – the XL 883 R

out of one of Harley-Davidson‘s first rubber-mount Sportster model

years – was a tough nut to crack.

The passionate and exciting race-style paintjob of STM Design‘s

Michael Starzengruber catches the eye immediately, but it also

covers how much work is really hidden in the bodywork: Never

satisfied before perfection, Tobias Guckel went over each and

every detail himself...

For the 2014 model year a completely new line of touring motorcycles

was introduced, motorcycles that have very few (if any)

parts numbers in common with their predecessors – and which

represent the most modern touring motorcycles ever developed

by the Motor Company. Major „Bagger“ parts manufacturers

– it is not surprising to see Arlen Ness, Küryakyn and Rick‘s

on the parts list – contributed components to this project, which

was one of the first fully road-worthy 2015 „Road Glide“ Baggers

to be built. Alex Sluyter and the team of Harley-Factory in

Frankfurt/Main used them to build a breath-taking and glittering

„Road Glide“.

in 2015 – and is back in force for this years „Bolt On and

Ride“ Bike Line-up: A superb Softail „Slim“ was customized to

perfection and is certainly also one of the „riders“ for the year

2015. In just 4 months during the „winter season“ – which for

the leading parts designer and manufacturer is hardly a break

– Andreas Bergerforth´s team at „Thunderbike“ not just developed

a „diet“ for the 2015 edition of the fat-tired FLS, but also

a number of new parts which even took the team of Custom

Chrome Europe by surprise!

Sexy Thing by Maniac MechaniX

Introduced at the first-ever music-video of CCE in July 2014,

„Sexy Thing“ relaunched the 2010 introduced and now upgraded

“Lucky F*cker” kit. It played the „main part“ of the first

clip and is still used as a „testbed“ for new Softail-Bobber parts.

“Sexy Thing” was built from a 2002 Softail “Deuce”, which is basically

the same solid and reliable Softail/Twin Cam B base that

has been produced by Harley-Davidson for more than a decade

now. Christian Denstedt of Maniac MechaniX customized

“Sexy Thing” in a very short time, when the weather depending

outdoor shooting was scheduled for July 2014, but for the May

2015 shooting, only fuel had to be added...

Custom Chrome Europe 2015 Video: This is!

Great bikes, great rides, great stories – as for

several years late 2014 CUSTOM CHROME EU-

ROPE again commissioned 5 brand-new „Bolt

on and Ride“ Bikes for the 2015/2016 magazine

covers – and will back all of them up with outdoor

and riding images as the season will start

and the bikes are ridden! As in previous years,

the 2015 „BOLT ON AND RIDE“ motorcycles will

be ridden by CCE staff, custombike specialists

and you, the press.

In May 2015, all 2015 BOAR bikes were used in

CCE‘s most extensive promotion music video

clip ever, filmed in South France around Cogolin

and Saint Tropez. This is the „behind the

scenes“ feature of the filming and the bikes that

are ridden in the clip!
