PAGE 16 - MADISON MESSENGER - April 21, 2019 www.madisonmessengernews.com County can help residents with sewage repairs The Madison County Health Department has $84,500 to help existing homeowners with repairs or the replacement of their existing household sewage treatment systems. The Ohio Water Pollution Control Fund, through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, provided the funds to help residents decrease the risk of untreated sewage polluting Madison County’s waterways, groundwater and land from failing systems. This is an ideal program for homes connected to systems that are 25 to 30 years old and may be starting to see signs of needing repair or replacement. Examples of signs that a system may need to be repaired or replaced include: • raw sewage, black or gray water on the ground surface or ditch when the weather is dry; • soapy water on the ground or in the ditch; • unexplained wet area in the yard during dry weather near where the system is located; • wet spots over the leach field area; • motor for the aeration system not working; • the system’s lift station pump and/or grinder pump not working; • missing tank risers or covers, grates over sections of aeration system;or • strong sewage odor or foul odor around the system outside; To be eligible for funding to help fix such problems, a homeowner must be living in the home connected to the failing system for at least six months prior to application for assistance. Madison County Public Health must inspect the home’s sewage treatment system and determine that it is failing. Homeowners also must have a total household income below or at one of the following three funding categories and provide documents and provide documentation (a recent federal tax form or current income statements): • 100 percent funding—household of one to four people, maximum income of $24,600; five people, $28,780; six people, $32,960; seven people, $37,140; eight people, $41,890. The owner pays zero percent of the repair costs. • 85 percent funding—household of one to four people, maximum income of $49,200; five people, $57,560; six people, $65,920; seven EasterJoy What does Easter mean to you? Owner pays 50 percent of repair costs. Owners who do not qualify for 100 percent funding are required to pay their portion of the repairs. Rentals properties, commercial properties and new-build homes are not eligible. Existing houses already connected to a public sanitary sewer system are not eligible. Prior expenses for repairs, tank pumping or system connections are not eligible. Expenses to expand the size of the system due to remodeling the house are not eligible. The program does not cover costs if only the plumbing is repaired in the home. Limited plumbing costs NUTT Narene Sue “Susie” Nutt, 48, of London passed away surrounded by family on April 13, 2019, in The Ohio State University Medical Center. Susie was born on April 9, 1971, in Columbus, Ohio, to Jimmie and Rosalee (Anderson) Nutt. She spent her whole life spreading love and joy to her family and friends. Susie had a passion for caring for others every day of her life and was dedicated to making the lives of her loved ones happier. She was an avid sports fan, specifically the Buckeyes, Reds and Blue Jackets. Susie loved her pets, Sophie, Cooter and Boo. Other things she enjoyed are Christmas, snow, baking, reading and Joey Votto! She was known for her playful personality, long beautiful hair and joyful spirit. Susie impacted so many lives and her memory will be cherished forever. Susie was preceded in death by: her great-grandparents, Burky and Rhoda Anderson; grandparents, Harold and Bessie Anderson and Ronald and Betty Nutt; her mother, Rosalee; uncle, Chuck Anderson; and brother, Keith Nutt. She is survived by: her father, Jimmie; sister and brother-inlaw, Sherinda (Nutt) and Chris Jacobs; special niece and nephew, Amanda Plummer and Cody Nutt; nephews, Michael and Matthew Nutt; aunt, Rita Riddleburger; special cousins, Diane, Kathy, Tom, Chuck, Tim, Bobbi, Sherri and Gina; and very close friends, Darcey, Avery, Weena, Riley, Allen, Aria, Jack, Kelsey and Corrie. Funeral services were held April 16 at Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home & Crematory, London, with Pastor Jeff Smalley officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home for the benevolence of the family. MATHEWS Carolyn Ruth Mathews, 70, died on April 14, 2019, at her residence. Born on Aug. 1, 1948, in Kenton, she was a daughter of John Edwin and Margaret Ann (Hare) Thomas. Carolyn enjoyed shopping, being with friends and, most of all, spending time with her grandkids. She was by far their biggest fan and did everything she could to be at every one of their events. They truly were the light of her life. She retired from Doctors West Hospital in Columbus. Survivors include: her mother, Margaret Thomas; husband, James R. Mathews; children, James R. (Misty) Mathews Sr., Rhonda K. (Anthony) Robinson and John Thomas Mathews; grandchildren, Jocelyn Mathews, Jonathan Mathews, Kaitlyn Mathews, Haley Mathews, Preston Robinson, Tyler Mathews, Parker Robinson and Joey Mathews; siblings, Carl Thomas, Cheryl (Sonny) Rhodes, Carla James and Chad Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. April 25 in Jesus Christ Church of the Latter-Day Saints, 1070 Sheffield Blvd., London. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. The family is being served by Eberle- Fisher Funeral Home & Crematory, London. ROBERTS Joe Roberts, 89, of London died on April 15, 2019, in his residence. Born on Dec. 11, 1929, in Madison County, he was a son of Chester Pearl and Hilda Grace (Loveless) Roberts. Joe was a lifelong farmer, had served in the Ohio National Guard for nine years and was a charter member of the Central Townships Fire Department at Newport, serving as assistant fire chief from 1966 to 1986 and as fire chief from 1986 to 1999. Joe was a member of Newport United Methodist Church and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and had ridden a motorcycle for more than 82 years. He had a passion for travel, having seen most of the United States. He also loved being a private pilot in the family’s plane. He is survived by: his wife, Marie Nibert; sister, Mary Anne Dawson of Tallahassee, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; two step-daughters and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; first wife, Margaret; brothers, Deane L. and Neal H. Roberts; and sister, Phyllis Jane Roberts Raub. Funeral services were held April 19 in Newport United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Smalley officiating. Interment followed in Paint Memorial Cemetery, London. Among those congratulated were the district’s top DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) students. Brooklyn Randles won a 32-inch smart television as the top pointgetter in the class. Her participation, vigilance and leadership stood out above the rest. Top Gun honors went to Carmine Hood, Wyatt Stone, Remington Wight and Damien Withers, all of whom read their winning essays aloud at DARE graduation. All of the students are fifth-graders. Mike Siders, coach of the high school’s powerlifting team, praised his athletes for making school history as the district’s first state champions. The boys’ and girls’ teams both won titles at the 32nd Annual Bill Mc- Clain Ohio State Powerlifting Meet. “The challenge is to keep this train going,” Siders said, thanking the administration and the community for their support of the program. The district has started a new program by which they choose one staff member per month to recognize for good work. This month, they recognized Sam Stires, custodian for the kindergarten through sixthgrade building. “There’s none better,” said Brad Miller, elementary school principal, adding that Stires is thorough, knowledgeable, helpful and personable. Additionally, the board approved a list of 88 seniors who are scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies on May 24. Personnel The board voted 4-0 to terminate the employment of the school district’s technology coordinator. Board member Cory Coburn was absent. The district placed the employee on administrative leave on Jan. 22 following “a report of his serious misconduct involving a minor student, as well as his misuse of district technology.” The board initiated termination proceedings on March 19 and sent written notice to the employee, who did not demand a hearing on the matter. In other personnel matters, the board accepted the resignation of Jenny Wethington as head girls’ soccer coach and Jon Phillip Emrick as head mechanic. Emrick has worked for the district for 42 years. “We appreciate all of his hard work and dedication to Madison-Plains,” said board President Mark Mason. Committees The facility and grounds committee is discussing the idea of establishing an auxiliary athletic field behind the existing baseball field. Mason noted that the costs associated with establishing the additional field would be minor. The district’s communication committee is discussing the possibility of creating a district mobile app and redesigning the district website. The next Madison-Plains school board meeting is set for 7 p.m. May 14 in the district meeting room at the elementary building.
