adversity, were owing <strong>to</strong> him; for that <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong>n journeyed an entire<br />

thirty days, and had spent all <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>the</strong>y had brought with <strong>the</strong>m; and<br />

meeting with no relief, <strong>the</strong>y were in a very desponding condition. And by<br />

fixing <strong>the</strong>ir attention upon nothing but <strong>the</strong>ir present misfortunes, <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

hindered from remembering what deliverances <strong>the</strong>y had received from God,<br />

and those by <strong>the</strong> virtue and wisdom <strong>of</strong> Moses also; so <strong>the</strong>y were very angry<br />

at <strong>the</strong>ir conduc<strong>to</strong>r, and were zealous in <strong>the</strong>ir attempt <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ne him, as <strong>the</strong><br />

direct occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir present miseries.<br />

4. But as for Moses himself, while <strong>the</strong> multitude were irritated and<br />

bitterly set against him, he cheerfully relied upon God, and upon his<br />

consciousness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> care he had taken <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se his own people; and he came<br />

in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, even while <strong>the</strong>y clamored against him, and had s<strong>to</strong>nes<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir hands in order <strong>to</strong> despatch him. Now he was <strong>of</strong> an agreeable<br />

presence, and very able <strong>to</strong> persuade <strong>the</strong> people by his speeches; accordingly<br />

he began <strong>to</strong> mitigate <strong>the</strong>ir anger, and exhorted <strong>the</strong>m not <strong>to</strong> be over-mindful <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir present adversities, lest <strong>the</strong>y should <strong>the</strong>reby suffer <strong>the</strong> benefits that had<br />

formerly been bes<strong>to</strong>wed on <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> slip out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir memories; and he<br />

desired <strong>the</strong>m by no means, on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir present uneasiness, <strong>to</strong> cast<br />

those great and wonderful favors and gifts, which <strong>the</strong>y had obtained <strong>of</strong> God,<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir minds, but <strong>to</strong> expect deliverance out <strong>of</strong> those <strong>the</strong>ir present<br />

troubles which <strong>the</strong>y could not free <strong>the</strong>mselves from, and this by <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong><br />

that Divine Providence which watched over <strong>the</strong>m. Seeing it is probable that<br />

God tries <strong>the</strong>ir virtue, and exercises <strong>the</strong>ir patience by <strong>the</strong>se adversities, that it<br />

may appear what fortitude <strong>the</strong>y have, and what memory <strong>the</strong>y retain <strong>of</strong> his<br />

former wonderful works in <strong>the</strong>ir favor, and whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y will not think <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m upon occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> miseries <strong>the</strong>y now feel. He <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m, it appeared<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were not really good men, ei<strong>the</strong>r in patience, or in remembering what<br />

had been successfully done for <strong>the</strong>m, sometimes by contemning God and his<br />

sometimes by behaving <strong>the</strong>mselves ill <strong>to</strong>wards him who was <strong>the</strong> servant <strong>of</strong><br />
