Whenphotographingpeoplewalkingorrunning,usecontinuousshooting

toincreaseyourchancesofcapturingaseparationbetweenthelegs.It

alwaysmakesforabeterphotothanthosewherethelegsaretogether.

motion.DependingonthelightyoumayneedtouseaNDfilter,ahigh

aperturef/numberandlowISOsetingsoyoudon’tblowoutthe

highlightswithalongerexposure.


Alwaysbeonthelookoutforthatperfecttree.Asinglestand

alonetreeisagreatstartingpointforaninteresting

composition.


Whenyouarefacedwithascenethatcontainsbothlightanddarkareas,try

evaluativemeteringwith-2exposurecompensation.

Thistechniquewilhelpkeeptheshadowsdark.Otherwiseyourcamerahasa

tendancytotrytobrightentheimageasawhole,whichinturncanblowoutthe

highlights.

socialmedia.Ihaveafewheuristics(rulesofthumb)whenitcomestosocial

media:

-Don’tInstagram photosofyourfoodorcoffee

-Don’tsharethingsthatyouyourselfwouldn’treshare

-Whenindoubt,don’tshareit

-Don’tsharemorethan1imageadayonsocialmedia

-Don’tspam people

-Don’tusetoomanyhashtags

Thesearejustafewthatcometothetopofmymind–essentialyyouwantto

avoiddoingthingsthatdon’tadd“value”toyourviewer.

Sowhatexactlyis“value”?

SocialMedia

Valueissomethingthathasworthtoanotherperson.Somethingofvaluecan

beinspirational,moving,interesting,funny,sad,andcanperhapschangethe

person’slife.

Theenemyofvalueis“noise”(orspam).Insocialmediaoneofthebiggest

problemsisthatpeoplesharewaytoomuch.Theyshareboringshit.Honestly,

nobodycaresifyouhadamuffinandacappuccinoforbreakfast.Peopleare

interestedthoughifyousharearelevantphotographystory,ifyousharea

strongimagethatinspires,orifyouaskquestionsthatengagepeopleorcreate

debates.


Sobeforeyoushareanythingonsocialmedia,whetheritbeFacebook,Twiter,

orInstagram thinktoyourselfthefolowingquestions:

-Wilthisinspiremyviewer?

-Ifsomeonesharedthiswithme,wouldIfinditinteresting?

-Isthisinformationvaluabletomyviewer,orisitjusttopumpupmyownego?

-Wilpeoplefindthisinteresting?

-Dotheyrealyneedtoseethisorknowthis?

-Isthisspammy?

Ithinkoneofthebiggestthingsweshouldavoidinsocialmediaas

photographersarethingsthatboostourego.

Whyisthat?Haveyoueverbeentoapartyandmetsomeonewhohadahuge

ego?Someonewhocouldn’tstoptalkingaboutthemselves,anddidn’tgivea

damnaboutanybodyelse?Nobodylikesthatguy,don’tbethatguy.

Thatguyonsocialmediaistheonewhoisonlyinterestedinbroadcastingand

notinterestedinengagingwithotherpeople.Theymightsharethingsabout

themselvesthatarenarcissisticorthingsthatmakethem bragabout

themselves.

Butrather,beagenerouspersononsocialmedia.Trytocreateandaddvalueto

yourfolowersandtotheInternetatlarge.Everyonealwayslovesgenerous

peopleastheyaregenuine,wanttohelp,andlovesharingthingsthatareof

valuetoothers.

Soratherthanthinkingthequestion:“HowcanIgainmorefolowersonsocial

media”–askyourself,“HowcanIcreatemorevalueandhelpoutmorepeople

outthere?”Themorevalueyoucreate,themorefolowersyouwilnaturaly

gain.

Howdidyoufirstbecomeinterestedinphotography?

Photographywassomethingthatwasintroducedtomeataveryyoungage.I

grewupwatchingbothmyfatherandbrothersdeveloptheirownblackand

whitephotographstheytook,andlateron,myfatherdabbledindevelopinghis

owncolorprints.Ialwaysfounditfascinatingwatchingmyfatherputapieceof

paperintosomeliquid(developer)anditslowlystarttoshowanimage.

Ialsorememberthinkingwewouldaldiewhenmyfatherwouldslam onhis

brakesonahighwayandpulovertothesideoftheroadtogetashot!Igrew

upinMontreal,Canadaandwehadbeautifulmountainsthat,inthefal,turned

intoanabsolutelybeautifulpainting.Caughtattheperfecttime(heightof

color)ifIdidn’tseeitwithmyowneyes,Iwouldn’tbelievethecolorscouldbe

real.

Ialwaysenjoyedtakingphotos,alwayshadsomekindofpointandshootbutI

didn’trealyhaveanydesiretodoanythingwiththem.Fastforwardmanyyears,

gotmaried,had2children,movedtoEdmontonAlberta,Canada,gotdivorced,

remariedandfinalystartedtotravelwithmynewhusband.Welovetocruise

andIjustlovebeinginanewportwithnewphotoopportunitiesdaily.Iwas

frustratedwithmypointandshootasIcouldn’tgetcloseenoughtoanything

andrealywantedazoom lens.MyfirstDSLRwaspurchasedabout9yearsago

withazoom lens.Ikeptitinauto,soproudofthepicturesIwasgeting(not

whenIlookbackatthem now !).Fast-forwardagaintoabout4summersago,

IhadmystafoverforaBBQatmyhouseandIpuledoutmycameraandbegan

totakephotos.Oneofthegirlsstartedaskingmequestionsaboutthecamera

anditcameoutthatIwasshootinginauto.Shejustlookedatmeandasked

whyIwouldhavesuchanexpensivepieceofequipmentandnotuseittoits

potential.DAREON !Iam verycompetitivewithmyselfmostlyandfrom that

dayforwardIwantedtolearnhowtoshootinmanual.


Whatorwhoinspiresyou?

Thisisadifficultquestion.Ican’tsaythatanyoneartist,orthinginspiresme.IfI

seesomethinganditmovesmeinanywayIam inspiredtocaptureit.Thatbeing

said,peopleinthiscoursemostdefinitelyinspireme.Ihavewatchedpeoplegrow

sofastinourStudentFacebookGroupandthatinspiresmetokeepongrowing

andlearningmoreandmoreofmycraft.


Howhasourphotographycoursehelpedyou?

Theanswerissimple,ineverywhichwaypossible!Iwilcontinuemystory

whereIleftofbefore.AfterIchalengedmyselftolearnmanual,Istartedtodo

researchandcameacrossTanya’scourse.Ifeltitwasreasonablypricedsothat

evenifIwastedmymoneyitwouldn’tkilmefinancialy.Manthatwasagreat

gamble!IbeganthecourseanditwasjustsoeasytofolowandIsaw

improvementsinmyselfrightaway.IalsoLOVEDtheprivateFBpageas

everyonewassohelpfulwhenyouaskedforhelp.Ilovedlookingandlearning

from everyoneelse’sphotosaswel.Ididn’tgoanywherewithoutmytrusted

laminatedcheatcheatsandrealytriedtofolowthem toatee.AsIstarted

gainingsomeconfidenceIbegantoexperimentwithdiferentsetings,daringto

dosomething“my”way.ThistaughtmewhyIshouldfolowtheexperts–LOL.

Lotsofbluryimages,focalpointnotcorect,lightingwayofbutthishas

helpedmetounderstandmymistakesandimproveonthem.Istilremember

howproudIwasthefirsttimeTanyapickedoneofmyphotostobeinthe

magazine.ItgavemethemotivationtocaryonevenonthosebaddayswhenI

wouldshoot100photosandnoneofthem wouldcomeout.Tanya’sediting

coursewasanothereyeopenerforme.IusedtofeellikeIwascheatingwhenI

editedmyphotos.Ihavesincelearnedhowtoappreciatethatwhenyoushoot

inRAW,developingofthatphotoisamust.Itisnodiferentthanthefilm days,

developingthenegative(RAW file)intothefinalprintjustlikeIwatchedmy

fatherdogrowingup.


What’syourmostmemorablemoment?

Therehavebeensomanyofthem overtheyearsbutselingmyfirstphotowas

definitelymemorable!ItwasanightsceneofmycitythatIpostedonmy

personalpageandmydaughtercommentedonit.Herbosssawitand

contactedmeandmyfirstsaleoccured.

manyhummingbirdsthere.


Whatplansdoyouhaveforthefutureofyourphotography?

IknowthataslongasIam ableIwiltakephotos.Itismyrelieffrom stress

from workorlifeingeneral.Forme,photographygivesmeapurpose,asense

ofcalm whileIam outinnaturetakingphotos(evenifthatisinmyown

backyard)orevenindoorssetingupshotsformymacrophotography.

Developingtheseshotsintomyownartform givesmepleasureandasense

ofaccomplishment.

IdofindshootingeventsorpeoplestressfulsoIstayfarawayfrom thatfor

now.Iam hopingthatwhenIretireIwilhavethetimetodedicatetomy

craft,setupawebsite,getoutthereandmarketmyphotosandhopefulywil

beabletogrowthebusiness.Ifthatdoesn’thappen,I’m goodwiththattooas

thiswilalwaysbemypassion.


What’syourbestpieceofadviceforotherssofar?

DONOTGIVEUP!TherehavebeenmanydayswhereIwonderwhoam I

kidding,Ihavenotalent,everyoneisbeterthanme,andnoonewileverwant

tobuymyart.ThenIhaveagooddaywheremybiggestproblem istodecide

whichofthese100shotsthatalcameoutdoIpicktoshowcase(Ilovethose

days!).IalwaysremindmyselfthatultimatelyIam doingthisformyselfandart

isverysubjective.Noteveryonehasorunderstandsyourvision.Aslongas

Soasaphotographer,howcanyoucreatemore“value”?Herearesomeways

youcancreatevalue:

1.Startablog

Ithinkoneoftheeasiestwaysaphotographercanbuildvalueandgaina

folowinginsocialmediaistocreateablog.Ablogisahomebasethatis

ownedbyyouandisaplacewhereotherpeoplecanfindyou,interactwithyou,

andaplacewhereyoucansharephotos,knowledge,orinformation(whichis

hopefulyofvaluetoothers).

Sohowdoyouknowwhatkindofblogtomake?Myruleofthumbisthis:think

aboutcreatingablogthatyouaresopassionateaboutthatevenifyouwere

neverpaidforit,youwouldupdateiteverydayforatleast10years.Agoodway

tofigureoutwhatkindofblogtostartisbyaskingyourselfthequestion:“What

kindofblogwouldIwanttoread?”

Anotherwaytothinkaboutwhatkindofblogtostartistotrytosolvea

problem.Ifyounoticethatalotofphotographershaveproblemsnotgeting

goodfeedbackandcritiqueontheirwork,perhapsyoucanstartaphoto-critique

blogthatsolvesthatproblem.Ifyounoticealotoflandscapephotographers

whohaveahardtimestayinginspiredwhenintheirboringsuburbs,perhapsyou

canstartablogonhowtomakeinterestinglandscapesinthesuburbs.Ifyou

noticealotofportraitphotographerswhoarenervousorawkwardinteracting

withmodels,perhapsyoucanmakeablogthatisdedicatedtohelpingpeople

buildtheirconfidenceinteractingwithmodels.


AttheendofthedayIwouldsayjuststartaphotoblogonanytopicwhich

interestsyou(anddon’tworywhetherithasbeendonebeforeornot).Ifyou

areinsanelypassionateaboutstreetphotography,startit.Ifyouarepassionate

aboutlighting,startablogonphotographylighting.Ifyouarepassionate

aboutportraiture,goforthattoo.

Theexcuse“butithasbeendonebefore”isthebiggestbulshitexcuseyoucan

have.Why?Becausewhocaresifithasbeendonebefore.Youhaven’tdoneit

before.Yourvoiceisunique.Yourvoiceisspecial.Youhaveaperspectivethat

nobodyelseintheworldhas(butyou).

Andhonestlythemostimportantthingaboutstartingablogistojuststart.

Soifyoustartablog,whatkindof“content”orpostsdoyoumake?Onceagain

trytocreate“value”andsolveproblems.

Ipersonalyhavefounditisgoodtowrite“how-to”posts.Why?How-toposts

aregeneralyaimedtobehelpfulandusefultoothersasyoucanshareyour

ownperspectiveonhowtodosomething.

Anothergoodstrategyistofeaturetheworkofotherphotographers.Ithink

mostphotographerswanttheirworkseen,appreciated,andpublished.Alotof

photographersIknowwanttogettheirworkseeninmagazines,exhibitions,

blogs,orotherwebsites.Evenifyouareasmalwebsiteorblogstartingoff,

peoplestilareflateredandhonoredtobeaskedtohavetheirphotosshared.

Thebenefitofpublishingtheworkofothersisthatyoucreatevalueintheir

life(givingthem thehappinessofhavingtheirworkshared),andyoualsogive

theopportunitytobuildyourblog.Ifyoupublishanintervieworfeaturewitha

photographer,theywilnaturalysharetotheirsocialnetworksaboutthepost

whichwilcausemorepeopletolandonyourblog(andhopefulystayfora

longtime).


2.Colaborate

Anothergoodwaytogainmorefolowersonsocialmediaistocolaborate

withpeoplewhoalreadyhavealotmorefolowersthanyou.

Oneofthebestwaystodothisisby“guestposting”onotherpopularwebsites

orblogs.Ifyoueverdoaguestblogpostforanothersiteyouwanttomake

suretomakethatguestblogpostasdamngoodaspossible.Youwanttotryto

createasmuchvalueaspossiblebymakingitashelpful,interesting,funny,or

inspirationalasyoucan.Andattheendoftheguestblogpost,includelinks

backtoyourownblogandsocialmediachannels.

3.Don’tdie

Ithinkoneofthebeststrategiesinsocialmediaisthefolowing:Don’tdie.

WhatdoImeanbythat?Wel,theproblem thatmostbloggersmakeisthat

99.9% ofblogsdieafterthefirstmonth.Peoplearesimplynotcommitedor

passionateenoughtoblogforthatlongofatime.

NowIdon’twantyoutoconfusethisbythinkingthatyouhavetobe

constantlypostingmultipletimesaday.Intheory,youcanjustpostjustoncea

day,onceaweek,oronceamonth,butyoujustneedtobeconsistent.

Consistencyissoimportantinsocialmediabecauseonceyoufaloutofthe

consciousnessofyourfolowersorthepublic,peoplewilforgetyouandstop

folowingyou.

Onceyoufirststartgainingadecentamountoffolowers,youwanttoridethe

gravytrain.Youhavetokeepupthehustle,andcontinuetoridethatwaveto

gainmorefolowersandtogainmoreinfluence.


Growthinsocialmediaislikebuildingmuscles.Ifyouwanttoconstantlybuild

muscle,youhavetoconsistently(overalongperiodoftime)gotothegym,eat

therightproteins,andgetenoughrest.Youcan’tjustsitonyourassand

expecttogeta6-pacorbulgingbiceps.

Generalyforsocialmedia,Irecommendtryingtopostatleastonceaday.I

findthatpostingmorethan3timesadayhasdiminishingreturns.Ifyoupost

morethan3timesaday,peoplejustperceiveyouasspammy(basedonmy

personalexperience).

Peoplearecreaturesofhabits.Ifyoudrinkcoffee,canyouimaginegoingat

leastonedaywithouthavingcoffee?Tomany,drinkingacupofcoffeeislikea

morningritual.Sothinkabouthavingyoursocialmedianetworkslikethattry

togetpeoplehookedtoyoubyconsistentlyshowingup.


4.Createepic“content”

Ifyouwanttorealygainalargefolowinginsocialmediaandberecognized

foryourphotography,youneedtoactualymakegreat(or“epic”)content

whichincludesphotos,articles,videos,etc.Nomaterhowsavvyyouareat

socialmediaormarketing,youwilnevergainahugefolowingwithout

makingandsharinggreatcontent.

Soifyouwantpeopletoknowyouasagreatphotographer,firstfocuson

makinggreatphotographs.Howcanyoubecomeabeterphotographer?Study

theworkofthemasters,buyalotofgreatphotographybooks,atend

photographyclasses,seminars,orworkshops,andgethonestfeedbackand

critiqueonyourwork.

Iseealotofphotographerswhohaveamediocrebodyofwork,andare

confusedwhytheyhavelitletonofolowers.Thinktoyourselfthefolowing:

Whatincentivewouldyouhavetofolowaphotographerwhohascrappy

photographs?Ifyoumaketrulygreatphotos,peoplewiltakenoteandstart

folowingyou.


Whenwritingblogposts(orguestblogposts)trytomakeyourarticles10x

beterthananythingelseyouhavereadonthetopicbefore.Thinkhowyou

canbe10xmorehelpful,10xmoreinspirational,andperhaps10xmore

in-depththananythingelseontheweb.Makeitepic.

IfyouhaveaYouTubechannelonphotographyfocusonmakinggreat

interviewswithotherphotographers,greatequipmentreviews,great

photographylectures,andgreatpresentations.

Thereisasayinginthesocialmediamarketingworldwhichis:“Contentis

king”.Whichmeansattheendoftheday,thebestwayto“market”yourselfis

tojustcreategreatcontent(photos,articles,videosetc.).

Tosum up,gainingmorefolowersisamaterofaddingvaluetoother

photographers,towriteandcreateinterestingthings,andtodoitconsistently.
