Latest and greatest cosmetic solutions found at Artistic MedSpa
Many dental procedures are
cosmetic, so when Artistic Dentistry
began offering customers
more therapeutic treatments, a
spin off — and expansion —
was a natural move.
Enter Artistic MedSpa, 14811
S. Founder’s Crossing, Homer
Glen, which offers the latest
treatment options for facial esthetics
and smile enhancement.
“We concluded,” practice
manager Jeanette Arkoush said,
“that Botox treatment of the face
— and other treatments such as
dermal fillers — will impact our
results with restorative dentistry
as well as meet our patient’s
desire of having facial esthetic
procedures performed.”
Artistic MedSpa offers a full
slate of cosmetic solutions,
from Botox and skin resurfacing
to cellulite reduction and
scar reduction, led by medical
director Dr. Joel Arkoush, who
along with his staff believes in
solutions over quick fixes.
“There’s a lot of hype and a
lot masking the problems as
opposed to correcting the problem,”
Jeanette said. “Our Med-
Spa treatments are all sciencebased
and backed by years of
successful outcomes. These
procedures initiate a natural
healing process to rejuvenate
the skin, spurring the growth of
new collagen.
“We aren’t just using a cream
to make your skin feel more
supple; we are healing the skin
from within, literally turning
back the hands of time.”
Dr. Arkoush is a trained member
of the American Academy
of Facial Esthetics, which has
provided him with advanced
cosmetic techniques.
The staff at Artistic MedSpa is
also trained by the Venus Concepts
in numerous cutting-edge
procedures that must be applied
by trained professionals.
Just some of those procedures
are: intense pulse light therapy
used in photo rejuvenation and
laser hair removal; noninvasive
facial and body sculpting; fractional
radio frequency for both
skin tightening, skin resurfacing
and wrinkle reduction; and
magnetic pulse therapy and lipolysis,
or cellulite reduction.
Artistic MedSpa also is an authorized
retailer of SkinMedia,
which makes advance skin-care
products with reliable ingredients,
and also offers a loyalty
program under Allergan’s Brilliant
Distinctions, where you
can bank points, earn rewards
and save money on your favorite
cosmetic treatments, such as Botox
and Juvaderm
“At Artistic MedSpa, we are
firm believers in natural beauty,
but also believe in helping you
age with grace and elegance,”
Jeanette said. “This means that
wrinkles, sagging skin, sun damage
and uneven skin do not have
to be a part of your aging process.
“We are here to provide the
utmost personalized care to help
you look and feel your best. Our
team will take the time to listen
to your concerns and discuss the
treatment that would be most appropriate
to help you reach your
goals.”
ReLive Therapy, Gold Coast Orthopaedics unite for pain-free living
ReLive Physical Therapy and
Gold Coast Orthopaedics have
partnered to provide a welcoming
and relaxed, yet professional environment,
where clients receive
one-on-one care for maximum rehabilitation
potential.
The two businesses work in
tandem, both serving the same patients
with quality care.
When patients visit the businesses,
they see Gold Coast Orthopaedics
to be evaluated and
visit an orthopedic surgeon, and
then they follow up with ReLive
for physical therapy.
ReLive offers a wide-range
of services, including manual
therapy, structured therapy exercises,
work conditioning, athletic
screenings, pain management
consultation, dry needling and nutrition
consultations.
Their therapists treat workerscomp
injury, personal injury, collision
and whiplash injury, athletic-collision
injury, neck pain,
shoulder pain, knee pain, back
pain, foot and ankle pathology,
and post-op.
The company was founded by
Jim Judge and along with his staff,
Judge focuses on providing expert
clinical care and measurable outcomes.
The mission of ReLive Physical
Therapy is to provide each patient
with the individual care needed to
get them back to living a pain-free
life.
Gold Coast Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation
was founded by Dr.
Jacob Morgenstern, a practicing
orthopedic surgeon.
As the two businesses work
hand-in-hand, Morgenstern considers
Judge his right-hand man,
and said it is the same for Judge.
“No orthopedic surgeon practices
without his right-hand man or
woman,” Morgenstern said about
the importance that the businesses
place in one another. “And that is
physical therapy.”
Morgenstern also works with
nurse practitioner Rajesh Chattergoon.
Rajesh has worked closely in
collaboration with Morgenstern
for many years. He has a vast
knowledge of the muscular skeletal
system and disease processes.
The convenience of having orthopedics
and physical therapy
working so closely with one another
is an advantage for the businesses.
“The orthopedic doctor can see
the progress of his patients on a
fairly regular basis, because he’s
always in tune with the therapist,”
Morgenstern said.
One of the effective methods
that Gold Coast Orthopaedics
uses, further setting them apart
from competition, is conservative
therapy.
“Conservative therapy is injections
to the shoulder, knee and
back with therapy,” Morgenstern
said.
There are ever-increasing incidents
of orthopedic injuries,
ranging from sporting to work
accidents, and Gold Coast Orthopaedics
& Rehabilitation provides
quality care and serves as champions
of good health. It pushes for
optimal rehabilitation in order to
restore and retain maximum functionality.
The orthopedic clinic offers
patients health assessments and
evaluations, school and sports
physicals, myofascial and joint injections,
epidural injections, pain
management and custom orthoses,
among additional services.
Gold Coast Orthopaedics not
only focuses on the patient’s physical
well-being, but it also focuses
on “the whole.”
It works closely with clients
who suffer from occupational injuries
and workman’s compensation
cases.
Gold Coast also offers telephone
and video call appointments;
though, in-person visits are
preferred.
Gold Coast Orthopaedics &
Rehabilitation also offers second
opinions for clients who have received
a diagnosis from another
doctor and desire a second opinion
from Morgenstern.
In addition to the Mokena location
that both businesses share,
ReLive Physical Therapy also has
an office located in Glenview.
DuPage Medical Group
gives tips on health
screenings through the
ages for women
In today’s busy world,
it’s more important than
ever for women of all
ages to take control of
their health. Preventive
care starts with understanding
potential health
risks and ensuring any
recommended screenings
at each stage in life are
being met.
Being in their 20s can
be a fun time for women.
It’s when most women are
at or near their physical
peak. Building healthy
habits during this time
will help set a path for
better health long-term.
Although there may not
have be major health concerns
right now, it’s still
important to have regular
check-ups to establish a
health history. Monthly
self-breast exams, an annual
physical and vision
screenings are all exams
or screenings that women
should have in your
20s. Pelvic exams, pap
smears, blood sugar and
cholesterol testing are
also important to have
every 2-3 years.
Women in their 30s
may not feel or look much
different than they did in
their 20s; however, the
body is, in fact, changing.
The risk of developing
type 2 diabetes, cervical
cancer and breast cancer
is now higher, so it is even
more important to continue
preventive screenings.
Some women may notice
that their metabolism is
slowing down, and that’s
normal. Cleaning up eating
habits now can help
avoid health problems in
future years. Women may
also notice that seeking
balance in their lives is
becoming increasingly
difficult. Women should
remember to make time
for themselves. Even a
few minutes of yoga or
reading can help relieve
stress.
A woman’s 40s are
a major time of transition.
She may begin to
experience symptoms of
perimenopause – or the
transition to menopause –
such as hot flashes, vaginal
dryness and trouble
sleeping. Those women
experiencing any of these
symptoms should be sure
to talk with their primary
care physician or gynecologist.
They also may
notice that they’re beginning
to lose muscle mass,
but don’t worry. By adding
weight training to
their workouts, women
can help prevent muscle
loss and osteoporosis.
When they reach their
50s and beyond, women
need to devote even
more attention to their
health. During this phase
of their lives, the risk of
developing heart disease,
stroke and osteoporosis
continues to increase. In
addition to monthly and
annual exams, a primary
care provider may recommend
bone density or
blood sugar testing and/
or a colonoscopy. Women
can also try to seek fun,
low impact fitness activities,
such as tennis, golf
or yoga, and aim for at
least seven-nine hours of
sleep a night. Remember
that to age gracefully, it
is important for women
to love their bodies.
No matter what phase
of life a woman is in,
there are always measures
she can take to
maintain her health. With
more than 20 family and
internal medicine, obstetrics,
and gynecology
and pediatric locations,
Unique approach to care offers daily joy
Those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s,
dementia or other types of
memory loss are no longer alone. Evergreen
Senior Living in Orland Park offers
The Legacy: Memory Support. Its team
of trained caregivers offers personalized
care and a unique approach to caring for
seniors with memory loss.
“My mother knew that there was something
going on with her short term memory,”
said one resident’s daughter. “It’s
hard to be a 24-hour caregiver. They [Evergreen
Senior Living team] have learned
to work with my mom and how to take
care of her. My relationship with her is
fabulous now.”
At Evergreen Senior Living, Legacy
Living means that the family is making
sure that their loved one is cared for in the
best way possible based on their needs.
When people choose Legacy Living,
those people’s promises to care for their
loved one is fulfilled.
“We have a great team of caregivers,
of nurses, of staff that really love our
residents,” said Evergreen Senior Living
Wellness Coordinator Pauline McGrath.
Each day gently unfolds At Evergreen
Senior Living The Legacy: Memory Support,
taking into account each senior’s
preferences and comfort levels. The
person-centered programming promotes
socialization during a time that can feel
incredibly isolating. The Legacy: Memory
Support staff, who come in each day
refreshed and revitalized, take care of the
day-to-day tasks so families can go back
to their favorite roles in their loved one’s
life: family.
“We are by no means taking anything
away from the family or the resident
themselves; we are just giving things
back,” said Legacy: Memory Support
Coordinator Kaylee Meyers. “Maintaining
family contact is one of our biggest
goals.“
This unique approach works in tandem
with the facility’s unique campus, which
has been created to strategically cater to
residents with memory loss. Every detail
at The Legacy: Memory Care has been
designed with the clients’ loved ones in
mind.
Walking paths are designed in a continuous
figure eight, so residents can always
find their way to their destination.
Customized memory boxes hang outside
of apartments to help residents know they
are home. Bathrooms are set at an angle
in the apartments so that residents have a
clear idea of how to enter and exit. Kitchen
and dining areas are built for smaller
groups to ensure less noise and interruptions,
and more individualized attention.
Evergreen Senior Living is a part of the
Heritage Health family, one of Illinois’
leading senior healthcare providers. With
55 years of successful care for seniors, and
54 nursing home and assisted living centers
care expertise is extensive. Throughout
the years, its taken the time to refine its
approaches so seniors with memory care
needs can be their best selves and families
can have peace of mind. It calls its unique
approach, “Life Unrehearsed.”
Director Amanda Mauceri enjoys assisting
families at Evergreen Senior Living
“I think, as a team, we support our
families as they come in, and we want
to make sure we’re right alongside with
residential, commercial customers since 1926
Jennifer Dykstra, president
and owner — along side her father,
Richard Dykstra Sr., and
brother Rich Dykstra Jr. — is
proud to be a part of the NAW-
BO, and also a National Women
Business Owner and NWBOC
certified. She started out in the
summers washing trucks, typing
up contracts and cleaning
the office in high school. During
college she worked part time in
the office until going full time in
1998.
Now Jennifer’s role is overseeing
day-to-day operations, as
well as building business relationship
and exploring new opportunities
to take the company
to the next level.
She is a mother of four daughters
and spends most of her time
cheering the girls on the field/
court, as well as coaching when
the opportunity allows. Jennifer
and her girls also spend time
preparing food and feeding the
homeless once a month in Chicago.
The legacy Jennifer’s grandfather
and father have built is
extremely important to her. She
tries to keep it simple: Respect
others’ time, employees and
customers; keeping her word;
always be honest; and stay consistent
with what they have built.
Most importantly, treat others
the way you want to be treated.
Dykstra Home Services is
known for providing leadingedge
heating and cooling systems
and effective services.
Dykstra can enhance the enjoyment
of any home. Contact
Dykstra Home Services for new
installation, replacement, seasonal
maintenance and repair.
Dykstra also specializes in delivering
pristine indoor air quality
through products, such as: duct
cleaning, dryer vent cleaning,
duct sealing with Aeroseal technology,
attic insulation, germicidal
air purifiers, ion generators
and humidifiers. Dykstra also
installs, maintains and repairs
whole-home back-up generators.
Recognizing a customer’s
complete satisfaction encompasses
more than a thermostat
setting. Dykstra Home Services
optimizes indoor environment
through more precise control,
ease-of-management, improved
efficiency and reliable operation.
Become part of the Hawkinson Kia family
Integrity, service are priorities
at Matteson dealership
There is a stigma attached
to car salespeople,
and Ariel Rogers used to
believe in it.
That’s why, she said, she
got into the business.
“Because I didn’t trust
salesmen, I could make
customers like me feel
more comfortable,” said
Ariel, a sales consultant
with Hawkinson Kia in
Matteson. “It feels better
to help out that family that
has been denied or that
doesn’t know the process
well. We want to make
sure you have someone
you trust.”
Trust and respect are
foundational pillars of
the car-buying process at
Hawkinson Kia, where the
motto is “A customer is a
customer for life.”
At most dealerships, Ariel
said, the customer hears
“No” a lot — “no, we can’t
do that” or “no, you won’t
find that anywhere.”
“Customers feel disrespected,”
she said. “Here
it’s more gentle and we
treat you like family. We
build a relationship with
everybody — bad credit or
good credit.”
The reason that is so important
is because Hawkinson
Kia knows buying a
car is not a simple or inexpensive
decision. It is
important to an individual
or a family and involves
planning and sacrifice.
“We want to encourage
them to buy a car to help
them, not to help us,” Ariel
said.
It’s a long tradition of integrity
started when Robert
R. Hawkinson opened
a Ford dealership in Oak
Lawn in 1961. The current
owners of Hawkinson
Kia, Bob and Jim, trained
at their father’s operation
and today, carry on in the
same tradition in the family
name.
That attitude has helped
Hawkinson Kia become
one of the top dealers in
the region. Its inventory
is highlighted by new Kia
vehicles like the new,
award-winning Kia Tulleride
SUV.
“Right now it is flying in
and flying out,” Ariel said.
Hawkinson Kia’s service
department — with
ASE- and Kia-trained
technicians — is tops in
the area, as is the parts
department, which has an
inventory of more than 1
million parts.
“When you are buying a
vehicle, you want to trust
the company can take care
of your car and get you a
good deal with better service,”
Ariel said. “You
don’t have to worry about
that here.”
New Lenox woman recovers
from heart procedure with
rehab at Silver Cross
For most women, a tightfitting
bra is uncomfortable,
but for retired school
administrative secretary
Nancy Teschke, it was a
lifesaving signal to see a
doctor.
A few years ago, Teschke
came to the painful realization
that she had gained a
lot of weight; in fact, she
was at an all-time high. So
she embarked on a weightloss
journey that included
hiking, biking and golf.
To her delight, this youngat-heart,
active wife and
mother of adult children
lost 50 pounds following a
year’s investment of dedicated
effort.
Relaxing on a vacation
watching TV last fall
in Branson, Missouri, she
wondered why her bra felt
tight. She admittedly felt
a little lightheaded and
fatigued on occasion, but
chalked it up to needing
new glasses, overdoing
activities or overeating on
vacation, especially after a
round of golf and visiting
tourist attractions. In the
back of her mind, she also
knew her dad had suffered
heart disease, but quickly
put that out of her mind.
Luckily, her husband ignored
her excuses and took
her to the nearest emergency
room where an angioplasty
revealed a 99 percent
blockage in her main coronary
artery and a 50 percent
blockage in a second one.
This degree of blockage
is often referred to as “the
widow maker.” Two stents
were inserted and, after a
short hospital stay, she returned
home to New Lenox
still overwhelmed by the
experience and concerned
about the future.
“It was frightening to realize
that what I assumed
was minor discomfort actually
indicated a desperately
dangerous heart condition,”
Teschke said.
She called Heartland
Cardiovascular and connected
with cardiologist
Hazem Al Muradi, M.D.,
who designed a follow-up
care plan that included cardiac
rehabilitation at Silver
Cross Hospital.
“This was a big wake-up
call for me, and I appreciated
the informative staff
guidance during my rehab
program,” Teschke said. “I
learned why I was doing
certain exercises and what
I could expect in terms
of health improvements.
The staff was friendly and
knowledgeable, and the
constant monitoring gave
me confidence that I could
safely return to a normal,
even healthier life.”
Silver Cross rehabilitation
nurses and exercise
physiologists monitor activities
with telemetry and
helped Teschke learn to
change her bike riding to a
level that benefits her heart.
“A diagnosis or treatment
for a heart condition
can be life-changing, even
frightening,” said Brendan
Casey, Manager of Cardiology,
Endoscopy and
the Interventional Lab at
Silver Cross. “The goal of
the Silver Cross Cardiac
Rehabilitation Program is
to provide individualized,
progressive exercise and
education to help participants
and families recover
from the cardiovascular
event and prevent future
heart problems. Our program
is designed to improve
the functioning of the
heart and lungs, strengthen
Customer service sets
Lorenz Appliances apart
Integrity and reliability have been pillars
of Lorenz Appliances since Don Lorenz
Sr. opened the family business in the
1960s.
Now, his sons, Don Jr. and Brett, continue
serving suburban residents with
that same level of customer service amid
growth that includes a new builders showroom
in Mokena.
That customer service starts at the
source: the prices.
“I’m not out to gouge anyone or get rich
out of a deal,” Brett said. “My father always
said treat a customer fairly and they
will come back to you.”
Many appliance giants outsource delivery
services. The disconnect in the process
leads to a lack of accountability.
But with Lorenz, the customer will
know and can trust who is delivering their
product, emphasizing the company’s motto:
Not the biggest. Just the best.
“We’re there to take care of our customer,
especially through the delivery and
installation process,” Don Jr. said. “The
client experience is much better with Lorenz
Appliances.”
The company carries the top brands and
latest models in a full catalogue of appliances,
from a variety of refrigerators, ovens,
and washers and dryers, to outdoor
cooking equipment.
Visitors to Lorenzappliance.com can
find the latest addition to Lorenz’s inventory,
as well as information on current
sales, promotions and upcoming events.
Already with a flagship store in Homewood
(18320 Governors Highway),
Lorenz’s added a modern showroom at
19081 Old LaGrange Road in Mokena in
2018, allowing Lorenz Appliances to better
serve its friends across the southwest
suburbs.
Lorenz Appliances was the winner of a
22nd Century Media SouthWest Choice
Award for the Best Appliance Store in the
area, according to residents’ votes.
The new showroom will be the site of a
spring celebration on the first weekend in
May, in coordination with the Kentucky
Derby on May 4.
“We’ll get the grills out and cook all
day long; let people know we’re there,”
Brett said.
Phil & Amy take travelers
across the country
Phil & Amy, husband
and wife recording artists,
are well known for their
Chicagoland performances
and recent years of soldout
shows at Starved Rock
Lodge. What fans may not
know is that they also have
been offering travel tours
for more than 25 years.
Yes, Phil & Amy offer
deluxe motorcoach travel
trips to destinations both
near and far. With each trip,
their “family” of followers
continues to grow. Instead
of piling into your family
vehicle, you board a motorcoach
for an excursion
to a fabulous destination.
For overnights, one might
think that spending all that
time on a bus, even with
a comfortable washroom
equipped motorcoach,
would be a bit much, but
more than that, the motorcoach
ride itself is part of
the enjoyment of the overall
experience. Travelers
enjoy snacks, games and
fun, watch movies/videos
together and enjoy quiet
time too. The camaraderie
aboard the coach on a Phil
& Amy trip is unbeatable
and a large part of why
these trips are so popular.
All on board may start out
as strangers, but they end
up as “family” and friends.
Upcoming Phil & Amy
musical performances at
Starved Rock include both
multi-days in August and
December. Added this year
is an overnight/stay option
at the lodge. One-day
theatre performances are
always part of the trip list
repertoire. Overnight travelers
are looking forward
to June’s Cape Cod Tour.
Later in June, St. Christopher
Tours visits a favorite
treasure, Mackinac Island,
Michigan. Guests can
see the Mackinac Bridge,
bikes, horse and carriages,
famous fudge and
the historic Grand Hotel.
Upon arrival in the U.P.,
enjoy a meal overlooking
beautiful Lake Huron.
On Mackinac, the group
enjoys a horse drawn carriage
tour of the Island and
the famous Grand Hotel
Luncheon Buffet. Spend
the afternoon touring the
Grand, enjoying views
of The Straights from the
world’s largest porch.
With two nights, three
days on the Island, there is
plenty of free time to shop,
explore, bike ride, tour historic
Fort Mackinac or just
find a spot to relax and take
in the surrounding beauty.
October offers a threeday
visit to Frankenmuth,
Michigan, a great Bavarian
getaway featuring
Bronner’s Christmas
Wonderland. And in 2020,
there will be a breathtaking
scenic trip to The
Grand Canyon and The
Southwest Canyonlands.
Guests will view various
points of Grand Canyon
National Park, one of the
wonders of the world.
Travel the crown of the
Scenic Byway System,
Highway 12, and the ever-changing
landscape of
Canyon Country. Travelers
will also enjoy dinner
served in a dining room
overlooking the Colorado
River. For a night to remember,
head up river on
an evening boat ride to enjoy
one of the most unique
sound and light shows in
the world: 40,000 watts
illuminating the canyon
walls, bringing them to
life, an experience visitors
have hailed as the “highlight
of our vacation.”
Each stop on this tour will
leave visitors in awe of its
unique beauty, which only
the forces of nature can
accomplish over centuries
of time. For more information,
Moms love the Original Pancake House
menu for special Mother’s Day meal
Moms love pancakes
and they know breakfast is
the most important meal of
the day. Why not take all
the moms in your life out
to a delicious breakfast
at The Original Pancake
House this Mother’s Day?
The Original Pancake
House prides itself on preparing
delicious, homemade
breakfasts using
only the finest ingredients
— such as grade AA
eggs, pure heavy whipping
cream and thick cut bacon
— and presenting these
mouthwatering meals with
a smile. The employees
are eager to serve and treat
their guests like family.
Many employees, as well
as customers, have been
dedicated to The Original
Pancake House for over
30 years. A very familiar
face at the Orland Park
location is Eddie. Eddie
started serving at 16 years
old when she arrived here
from Korea and is still
serving her regulars and
their grandchildren 40
years later. Eddie, a mom
herself, knows how to
amuse the children and get
the food out quickly so the
moms can enjoy a peaceful
breakfast. Many of The
Original Pancake House
employees have been with
the company for years.
“Once we find a good
employee, we try our best
to keep them happy so
they will stay,” said thirdgerneration
owner Lisa
Sczurek. “Guests love to
see familiar faces, and we
want everyone to think of
us as their second home.”
Lisa and her husband
Steve are very hands-on
operators.
“There is nothing we
would expect our employees
to do that we
haven’t done many times
ourselves; we appreciate
and respect how hard they
work,” Lisa said.
And hard work it is.
Everything is made from
scratch and cooked to order.
All the syrups and
sauces are made in house,
sweet cherry Kijafa sauce,
are made fresh every
morning, and the orange
juice and grapefruit juice
is squeezed by hand. But
it’s the pancakes that truly
set them apart from other
breakfast restaurants.
More than 14 ingredients
go into the buttermilk batter.
They use a true sourdough
yeast, grown from
a culture of potatoes, flour
and sugar, and activated
with a “start of yeast,” creating
light and fluffy, melt
in your mouth goodness.
The servers at OPH hope
you treat your mom to a
delicious breakfast at “our
in bed this Mother’s Day.
locations offer daily specials
“I share my new insights about diet
“Next, I am considering follow-up with
I can follow up with my routine at home.“
The credit union difference
As a financial cooperative,
credit unions are notfor-profit,
democratically
controlled and memberowned.
They exist to serve
their members even in the
toughest times. Instead of
dividends to outside shareholders,
credit unions provide
value to their members
by returning earnings
in the form of lower loan
rates, higher interest on
deposits and lower or even
no transaction fees.
Why NuMark Credit
Union?
The experience is different
at NuMark Credit
Union. It treats their members
like family, and it
helps their members get to
their fantastic future faster.
NuMark has money to
Jack Gibbons Gardens all about traditions, not trends
Jack Gibbons Gardens
does not follow trends.
Diners are not going
to witness Happy Hours
or Margarita Mondays at
Jack Gibbons.
That is because Jack
Gibbons focuses on what
really matters: great food
and even better company.
The restaurant reportedly
has customers who say
they have not been there
for 25-30 years but come
back and it is just the way
they remember it.
Jack Gibbons Gardens
— or Gibbons, as the
regulars call it — opened
in 1922 as a speakeasy.
Although times have
changed drastically since
then, the restaurant itself
has not. From the
red leather booths to
the wood-paneled walls,
Jack Gibbons is truly
timeless.
In a time where chain
restaurants are on every
corner, Gibbons has become
even more special
and unique. From the second
a diner sits and is instantly
delivered delicious
warm bread, three-bean
salad and coleslaw, before
even a glance at the menu,
it is easy to know one is
about to have one of the
STEAKS •CHOPS •PRIME RIB
SEAFOOD•CHICKEN •RIBS
best meals of his or her
life. From surf and turf to
fried chicken, Gibbons has
something to satisfy any
craving.
Gibbons has been described
as a “generational
place” that sees everyone
from grandfathers and fathers
to their grandchildren
who dine there.
A secret to that success
is that the restaurant’s staff
does not experience the
type of turnover seen in
some chain restaurants. Its
employees have worked
there for years, striving
for a “Cheers” vibe
with which the bartender
knows the customers,
what they’re having, and
the friends they bring with
them.
Tips for tidying up finances
StatePoint Media
The cultural phenomenon
sparked by professional organizing
consultant Marie Kondo has
motivated millions worldwide
to declutter. While cleaning out
a closet and making a financial
plan may be two very different
things, tidying up one’s finances
can also “spark joy.”
A Certified Financial Planner
can help people commit to
a plan that helps them take control
of their spending, providing
them with confidence today and
a more secure tomorrow.
Here are nine ideas to get
started
1. Write down financial goals
and post them somewhere
prominent, such as the fridge.
These can be small goals, like
“Bring lunch to work three
days a week,” or bigger goals,
like “Pay off student loan.”
Enjoy Resturant-Quality
Foods... At Home!
2. Calculate your net worth to
get an overall picture of your
financial standing. Your net
worth is everything you own
minus everything you owe.
3. Update, or create, a budget
showing what money is coming
in and what’s going out.
Make sure it’s not in the red,
meaning you’re spending
more than you’re earning.
4. Consider opening a Christmas
club-type savings account to
pay for big-ticket personal expenses.
Originally pioneered
during the Great Depression,
Christmas clubs were financial
accounts people added
cash to throughout the year.
They then used these savings
to buy holiday gifts, helping
to avoid the holiday spending
“hangover.” You can create
your own by automating savings
each month, ideally in
an interest-bearing account. If
you save $75 a month, you’ll
have $900 over the course of
a year — or even more, if you
earn interest.
5. Check your credit report. With
Credit Karma, you can check
your credit reports from TransUnion
and Equifax for free
weekly. Additionally, you can
check your report from each of
the three main credit bureaus
once a year for free with annualcreditreport.com.
6. Set a deadline to pay off credit
cards in full. This will help
motivate you to take control of
your debt.
7. Rebalance your 401(k) about
once a year to see if you are
out of balance from your
original goals. For example,
if your allocation was 60 percent
stocks and 40 percent
bonds, but stocks had a good
year, you might now have a 65
percent stocks and 35 percent
bonds allocation, so this will
have to be rebalanced.
8. Increase your savings plans.
This could be your employer
plan at work, your own emergency
fund, or both. Consider
raising your contribution by 1
percent a year.
9. Meet with a CFP professional.
If you haven’t begun planning
for retirement or tying your
financial goals to your life
goals, there’s no better time
than now to start. You can find
a CFP at letsmakeaplan.org.
As you put your belongings
in order, consider your finances.
Simple measures can help you
tidy up your finances.
Women’s Healthcare of Illinois expands midwifery program
Building trusting relationships and lifelong
connections are the driving forces
behind Women’s Healthcare of Illinois,
and with the recent expansion of the midwifery
program, better birth outcomes
and overall care have come to Chicago’s
south suburbs.
“I strive every day to provide evidencebased
care to my patients and to help them
make the best decisions that they can,”
said Beth Helme-Smith, the program’s
nurse midwifery service director.
With that focus on education, Helme-
Smith’s team of dedicated nurse midwives
has made personalized care a priority,
and the results continue to speak for
themselves.
Studies have shown equal or better outcomes
for women and babies compared to
traditional care, including 19% lower risk
of infant death during delivery, 33% lower
risk of infant death in the first month
of life, and decreased incidence of lowbirth-weight
babies.
“We provide longer-than-typical visits
with our midwives, and we discuss
individual preferences and tailor care to
fit the needs of every person who walks
through our doors,” said Dr. Ken Finkelstein,
founder of Women’s Healthcare of
Illinois. “I want to thank Advocate South
Suburban Hospital for working with us to
provide the first comprehensive midwife
delivery experience in the south suburbs.”
The midwives at Women’s Healthcare
of Illinois are considered “full-scope”
because they care for a client throughout
the span of her life, offering both lifelong
gynecologic and pregnancy care. And to
make the experience even better, Women’s
Healthcare of Illinois will be partnering
with local doulas for mothers that
want added support before, during, and
after birth.
“I love that at each birth a family is
born, not just a baby,” Helme-Smith said,
adding that she loves watching the transformations
that birth brings to people and
their relationships. “It is truly an honor for
us to be invited into such a sacred experience.”
The practice is a collaborative model of
care. The dedicated, highly skilled team
provides routine obstetric and gynecological
care to women of every age, as well
as women who may have more complex
needs, including post-menopausal changes
can affect a woman’s quality of life in
unexpected ways. Women’s Healthcare
of Illinois features MonaLisa Touch, a
painless and minimally invasive laser
treatment for vaginal rejuvenation that
has helped millions of women who are
silently suffering and unable to undergo
other treatment options.
“Our patients come first in everything
we do,” Finkelstein said. “We will continue
to strive to better serve our communities
both in the south suburbs and Northwest
Indiana.”
Tips to protect skin from the sun
StatePoint Media
Think you’re doing enough to protect
your skin from the sun? Don’t be so sure.
Experts say that many people assume their
sun protection routine is sufficient when it’s
not.
“While summer is an excellent reminder
that sun protection is a vital component of
health and wellness, it’s actually necessary
all year round and under circumstances you
may not realize,” said Florida-based dermatologist,
Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick.
Here are a few things to keep in mind
• Make-up may not be enough: If your
makeup contains SPF 15, don’t assume
you’re covered. Luckily, there are sun
protection options today that leave a
matte finish and won’t mess with your
cosmetics routine. For example, an easyto-apply,
clear matte finish layer of broadspectrum
protection under your makeup,
such as Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50,
will add needed protection while nourishing
skin.
• Think in all-day terms: Many people mistakenly
believe they receive most of their
sun exposure from going to the beach. It’s
all too easy to underestimate the damage
to skin from daily incidental sun exposure,
which accumulates and prematurely
ages skin. Whether you’re driving and
catching rays through the window, or
walking the dog in the morning, be mindful
that you’re getting sun exposure and
take necessary precautions.
• Think in all-year terms: Again, summertime
does provide a visceral reminder
of the importance of sun protection and
is an excellent time of year to develop a
sun protection habit, but don’t let this be
the only time of year you think about protecting
skin. Take a cue from the summer
you, and apply sun protection all year.
• Make it easy: One of the toughest aspects
of applying sun protection is remembering
to do it. But if it’s with you, you’ll use
it. Toss some in your purse or bag. A good
portable option is Ocean Potion Dab-On
Spot Stick SPF 50, which provides onthe-spot
broad-spectrum protection in an
oil-free formula, and like all Ocean Potion
products it is enriched with deep-sea
minerals, seaweed, algae extracts, aloe
vera, and antioxidant vitamins B, C and E
to replenish and nourish your skin.
• Like your choice: Doing the right thing for
your skin shouldn’t be a chore or create
different skin care issues. So be sure you
like your choice of sun protection. Look
for options that won’t clog pores, are
lightweight and offer easy application.
• Take care of yourself and the planet: Oxybenzone
and octinoxate are chemical ingredients
used in certain sun protection
that are considered to be harmful to coral
reefs. But you can select a sunscreen like
Ocean Potion Sport SPF 50 that’s oxybenzone-
and octinoxate-free and not
tested on animals, a win-win for you and
the planet. With no parabens, PABA, or
retinyl palmitate, it offers a lightweight,
non-greasy menthol formula with a cooling
sensation.
From poolside and beachside bathing to a
walk around the block, this summer, create
a daily sun protection routine that you take
with you everywhere you go.
Mill Pond Dental Group helps patients maintain oral health
Dr. Eric Young knew he wanted to be
a dentist after growing up in Panama and
seeing the need for good dentistry.
“In a third-world country you see how
important dentistry is and how bad it is,”
Young said. “Since I was in high school, I
knew I wanted to work in dentistry to help
people with their oral health.”
And after going to Loyola University
for an undergraduate degree, Northwestern
University for his master’s and Marquette
for a doctorate in dental science,
he began his own practice at Mill Pond
Dental Group in Mokena.
Mill Pond Dental Group is a general
dental office that provides preventative
care, such as general cleaning, to advance
services, such as full-mouth rehabilitation.
After more than a year at Mill Pond
Dental Group, Young wants to help patients
learn and practice preventative
health care.
“It is important not to put off your dental
work because then it becomes more
expensive and becomes more involved,”
Young said. “As dentists, we are pretty
good at fixing things, but I want to shift
that focus to a preventative point of view,
rather than a fixing-it point of view.”
Young said many times people wait
until they have a problem to come in for
dental work, when they should come in
regularly so they can keep up good health.
One of the biggest keys to maintaining
healthy teeth and gums is to make an appointment
at the dentist every six months
for checkups and cleanings.
Young suggests people should begin
seeing a dentist when they begin getting
teeth, which is in the first year of life.
The first visit at Mill Pond Dental
Group will always start with a comprehensive
exam. During a comprehensive
exam, Mill Pond Dental Group will take
a series of X-rays to check everything
from gum health to tooth health. After
the exam, Young will review results and
come up with a plan of action for patients.
“After the X-rays we will establish what
your needs are and how often you should
come in,” Young said. “For any patient,
regardless of the condition, a comprehensive
exam is always a good place to start.
We will help create a customized plan for
you.”
Young also noted Mill Pond Dental
Group is equipped with a full digital office,
enabling staff to use digital X-Rays,
which produce less radiation than traditional
X-rays.
Mill Pond Dental Group also has CT
scan machines that produce 3D X-rays
to provide better diagnoses and treatment
plans.
The staff at Mill Pond Dental Group
also helps patients maintain good oral hygiene
by providing at-home oral hygiene
care and nutrition tips.
“We can always give pointers on how
you can improve oral hygiene and give
you tips on other oral hygiene instruments
to keep your mouth nice and clean,”
Young said. “Nutrition is also important.
We can look at the type of diet you have
and see how it is affecting your gums and
teeth.”
Mill Pond Dental Group prides itself on
putting the patient first.
“The patient experience is the number
one, most important thing for us,” Young
said. “We always put our patients first
from the moment you call our office to
the moment you step into the office and
the moment you leave the office.”
Young said communication is also essential.
Patients can text the office and the
messages go directly to Young. He is also
regularly available by email or phone.
“I make myself available to talk on the
phone with patients directly,” Young said.
“Personalized care is huge.”
Mill Pond Dental group also offers patients
a “comfort menu” to choose from
during visits. The menu includes items
such as headphones, aroma therapy, blankets
and neck pillows to help enhance the
patient experience.
Studies show hearing loss in women tied
to quality of life, other health conditions
Men and women share
many of the same health
concerns. Many of these
health issues are similar,
but as far as hearing health
goes, South Suburban
Hearing Health Center has
identified some differences
between them.
Even though men are
twice as likely to experience
hearing loss than
women are, the ties hearing
loss in women have to
other medical conditions
are very unique.
Osteoporosis: According
to the National Osteoporosis
Foundation, there
are 10 million people in
the United States with the
condition, and 8 million
of them are women. As
women approach menopause,
their bodies produce
less estrogen. The
estrogen hormone protects
the bones, so when women
stop producing as much, it
leaves those bones more
vulnerable.
According to research
published in the Journal
of Clinical Endocrinology
and Metabolism, those
with osteoporosis are 76
percent more likely to develop
sudden cochlear sensorineural
hearing loss.
Pregnancy: Even
though rare, South Suburban
Hearing has seen
sudden hearing loss due to
pregnancy. Scientists hypothesize
this is caused by
changes in the cardiovascular,
hematological and
endocrine system, affecting
the circulation in the
cochlea.
Menopause: Decreased
levels of estrogen may
play a role in hearing loss
among menopausal women,
according to Swedish
researchers. Women
who do not take hormone
replacement therapy are
more likely to have poorer
hearing.
Depression: Depression
is a condition that
affects more than 19 million
American adults. According
to Mental Health
America, women experience
depression at twice
the rate of men due to developmental,
genetic, hormonal
and societal issues.
It occurs most frequently
in women between the
ages of 25-44, but research
shows hearing loss is associated
with depression particularly
among women.
Diabetes: Those with
diabetes are about twice as
likely to have hearing loss,
especially if the diabetes is
not controlled with medication.
Eleven percent of
women in the U.S. are affected
by diabetes.
Hearing health is directly
related to overall health
and well-being, and it’s
great that women are also
more likely to seek help
for their hearing health.
Hearing aids have been
shown to help cognitive
function and enhance quality
of life.
Get to a healthy weight with Weight No More
Weight No More Orland
Park is taking a
fresh, healthy approach to
weight loss and maintenance
of healthy weight.
Unlike other programs or
diets, Weight No More is
a medically supervised approach
to help individuals
get to their ideal weight,
and help them stay there.
Dr. Susan Rife and her
team work with individuals
to evaluate their specific
health and nutritional
needs, using things such
as a state-of-the-art body
composition analyzer to
customize a program to
their specific biological
needs.
“We work with our
weight maintenance patients
from a sciencebased
medical perspective,
not from the latest diet or
exercise fads,” said Rife,
owner of Weight No More
Orland Park. “One of biggest
advantages of seeing
a medical professional for
weight loss and maintenance
is that we can help
you cut through the clutter
and confusion of fad diets
that seem to pop up every
day.”
There are other distinct
differences to a medical
weight loss program, too.
Only a medical professional
can design a plan
for individuals that includes
medication, and
prepare and clear patients
for weight loss surgery
should they and their provider
decide that surgery
would be the best option.
Medical professionals also
emphasize overall health,
rather than strictly weight
loss, with a custom-made
program for individuals.
“There have been vast
improvements in safety
and efficacy in the past few
years in both weight loss
medications and surgical
techniques,” Rife said.
The process is very
straightforward, and
Weight No More keeps it
simple to help individuals
stay on track. An initial
Introducing Weight No
More - Orland Park!
MEDICALLY SUPERVISED WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER!
visit is a dedicated 30-minute
appointment for a patient
and his or her medical
provider to discuss his
or her questions, concerns
and goals, and ultimately
devise an individualized
plan together that suits the
patient best.
A new patient with Rife
also gets an initial physical
as part of the first visit, to
help the patient’s medical
providers understand the
patient’s specific needs.
“Obesity is a major problem
in our country,” Rife
said. “And many chronic
medical conditions are a
result of poor diet and low
physical activity.”
The medically based
Weight No More approach
includes advice and counseling
on diet and physical
activity, and can include
medication. In some cases,
surgery might even be
the best option; however,
many studies now show
that a reduction of just 10
percent of weight can have
a major impact on a person’s
health.
Publisher 22CM’s expo
brings women together
for fun, inspiration
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
Every year, 22nd Century
Media aims to make its Lady - A
Women’s Expo event bigger and
better.
And this spring’s Lady is both
of those things — 10,000-squarefeet
of exposition space has been
added; more than 127 vendors
have reserved booths; and organizers
are expecting record attendance.
All of the food, fashion,
fitness and lifestyle fun attendees
have come to expect will
be there, too, in ample measure
from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday,
April 27, at the Tinley Park Convention
Center, 18451 Convention
Center Drive.
But Heather Warthen, the publishing
company’s chief events
officer, also set out with another
aim this time around: female empowerment.
That is why, in addition to
cooking demonstrations and
fitness instruction, the expo’s
stages are to host several notable,
inspiring speakers.
“I really wanted to make it my
goal this year to include some
great, inspiring messages for
women,” Warthen said. “And
we wound up with a fantastic
group.”
The speakers will include Rachel
McCurdy, who will discuss
the success of The Talking Shirt,
her Frankfort boutique, and its
recent distribution deal with Von
Maur department stores. Tracy
DeGraaf, known as the Laugh
Anyway Mom, will be back
with her “Life Happens Laugh
Anyway” program. And at noon,
Bridget Pettis, the assistant coach
of the Chicago Sky, will speak
about her pioneering career as a
WNBA player and manager.
The main stage also is to feature
a mom-centric fitness demo,
yoga and George Mitchell, of
performing flower arrangements
to music. Several event attendees
will go home with arrangements,
Warthen said.
The cooking stage is to host
culinary professionals representing
a range of cuisines.
As usual, a number of vendors
will be giving out freebies, while
DIY Sign Party and Art a la Carte
will offer expogoers creative opportunities
in the form of carved
wooden signs and hand-painted
wine glasses.
The event also is to feature a
blood drive organized by Vitalant
and a dress drive with It’s All
About the Dress: Pay It Forward.
“Anything that’s a formal
dress, they’ll take that day,”
Warthen said. “They end up
giving it to someone in need.
If you’ve been sitting on that
bridesmaid’s dress, hoping you’ll
wear it one day, just bring it in.
The dress drive is a great fit for
our event.”
Vendors, meanwhile, will run
the gamut from soaps and spas to
jewelry and crafts, acupuncture
and dance lessons to financial
advisement, self-defense, homeremodeling,
health care, travel
and more.
This marks the sixth edition
of the expo, 22nd Century Media’s
longest-running and largest
event. Last year, 22CM held both
Lady and a scaled-down Ladies
Night Out, which proved such a
success that the company is holding
four Ladies Night Out events
later this year (June 13, Aug. 8,
Oct. 3, Dec. 5).
The concept seems to have
clicked with the women of the
southwest suburbs, Warthen said.
“Especially if you’re a mom,
you don’t get that night or that
day out all that often,” she said.
Last year’s Lady drew more
than 1,500 guests, and Warthen
said she expects to surpass those
figures this year. The event, she
said, is purposely held shortly
before Mother’s Day.
“You can get a jump on Mother’s
Day shopping,” she said.
Whether through shopping,
socializing or offering new perspectives
on juggling life’s demands,
the event’s ultimate goal
remains the same, Warthen said:
bringing women together for a
fantastic day.
Breast cancer screening: New doctor recommendations to know about
StatePoint Media
Breast cancer is the most common
cancer in women and the
fourth leading cause of cancer
death in the U.S. Annual mammograms
have been widely promoted
for women; however, experts say
that for women with an average
risk for breast cancer who don’t
have symptoms, exams should
be administered strategically, as
screening too frequently can do
more harm than good.
In a recent evidence-based
guidance statement published in
“Annals of Internal Medicine,”
the American College of Physicians
says that average-risk
women with no symptoms and
who are between the ages of 50
and 74 should undergo breast
cancer screening with mammography
every other year.
ACP says that beginning at age
40, average-risk women without
symptoms should discuss with
their physician the benefits,
harms and their personal preferences
of breast cancer screening
with mammography before the
age of 50.
About 20 percent of women diagnosed
with breast cancer over
a 10-year period will be overdiagnosed
and likely overtreated.
Overdiagnosis means a woman
is diagnosed with a breast cancer
that would not have made
her sick or led to her death if not
diagnosed or treated. Therefore,
finding this cancer is not of clinical
benefit to the woman.
Screening guidelines — such
as the age to start and discontinue
mammography, intervals
between mammograms, and
the role of alternative screening
methods — have varied among
organizations, complicating decisions
about care for both patients
and doctors; however, this
new evidence-based guidance
statement from ACP, which represents
convergence across these
differing recommendations,
hopes to provide clarity and simplicity.
screening guidance, visit acpon
