‘Deal with
corruption’
THEMBELA NDLUMBINI
Buffalo City Municipality
brought their Budget
Roadshow to King
William’s Town on
Monday where over
2,000 residents from the
surrounding wards crowded into
a tent at the Victoria Grounds to
listen to BCM mayor Xola
Phakathi and share their
g r i e va n c e s .
King William’s Town councillor
Amanda Mute said the purpose
behind the roadshow was to
allow the municipality to share
progress made with residents.
The event got off to a rocky
start when members of the
crowd forced their way towards a
table serving food and began to
hoard as much as they could
into plastic bags.
Law enforcement eventually
Residents’ plea to mayor
had to be called on to intervene.
One of the biggest complaints
from residents was the conduct
of ward 41 councillor Sindiswa
Skepe. The GO! & Express
previously reported (War of
words erupts, April 11) that
Skepe faced accusations from
many in the community of
mishandling funds and handing
out jobs to friends and relatives.
“I know you choose your
friends for tenders and after that,
you receive envelopes with
money and drinks,” Zwelitsha
resident Buntu Dikana said at
the recent ward 41 service
delivery report.
According to allegations by SA
Communist Party (SACP)
member Sindiswe Nqata, Skepe
had been consistently abusive
towards residents.
“She is always swearing and
insulting people instead of
communicating with ward
committees and the community,”
said Nqata.
Another complaint brought to
the mayor’s attention wa s
alleged pervasive corruption
within the municipality.
“We are appealing to the
mayor and other top officials to
intervene and perform a full
investigation into accusations of
corruption. We want all the
people who are involved to be
prosecuted and, if found guilty,
to be sent to jail,” said one
resident who asked to remain
anonymous.
DA vows to help
Fynbos residents
MATTHEW FIELD
DA EC premier campaign
spokesperson for basic services
Kevin Mileham, accompanied by
DA Team One SA spokesperson
for secure borders Jacques
Julius, recently conducted an
oversight inspection of the
Fynbos temporary
accommodation site outside E a st
London.
Residents are living in
two-bedroom temporary houses,
known as “fridges” because of
how cold they get during winter.
“The temporary arrangement
was supposed to last no longer
than six months, but some
residents have been in Fynbos
for more than seven years,”
Mileham said.
The buildings have no running
water or toilets and provide little
ventilation or natural light.
They are also built close
together, creating a
claustrophobic atmosphere.
“The toilet facilities [14 toilets
servicing hundreds of residents]
are frequently out of operation
and flood the shelters in the
immediate vicinity with raw
s e wa g e , ” Mileham said.
“None of the toilets have
doors, which results in residents
opting to use buckets and
disposing of the waste in the
veld across the road.”
He said the DA undertook to
raise the matter in parliament
and aims to pressurise Buffalo
City Municipality to prioritise
proper housing for citizens.
“It is unacceptable that 25
years after the dawn of
democracy, South Africans are still
forced into these type of camps
and then forgotten.”
Teddy, bible drive
for abused kids
SIVENATHI GOSA
Talita Van der Heever and PnA Stationers East
London have started a teddy and bible drive for
sexually abused children.
The purpose is to give the children something
special to hold onto when they are lonely at night.
“We want to give them something tangible and
special that will keep them safe, as this is a drive
for abused young boys and girls,” Van der Heever
said. The drive will run until the end of April.
“All donations can be dropped off at the Love In
Action shop in Gonubie or PNA Stationers on Old
Transkei Road.
“We have a support group that runs once a
month in Gonubie for moms of children who are
sexually or domestically abused,” she said.
“For more information, people can contact me
on 061-971-1533,” Van der Heever said.
US jazz festival gig breaking
of a new dawn for Sibusiso
SIVENATHI GOSA
Local musician Sibusiso Msesiwe,
also known as CeeBoo, has been
invited to perform at the Jazz Festival
in New Orleans in the United States
of America, where she will also be
attending educational workshops and
doing motivational speaking.
“I am a self-taught musician. I
enjoyed learning a skill without
conscious awareness of the
underlying processes of what is
being learnt.
“In the process of exploring your
curiosity, you make mistakes, learn
and grow because you have no scope
or boundary to limit you. It is for this
reason that I do not like being boxed
as a musician,” Msesiwe explained.
Born and raised in East London,
Msesiwe started singing at the
tender age of six as part of her
church choir and went on to learn the
piano.
She also took up poetry and often
attended open mic sessions.
Later, she would turn the poems
into songs about her lived experience
and things that she imagined.
“The poetry sessions gave me the
platform and confidence to be able to
bare my soul in front of a live
audience to examine what I had to
offer artistically.
“When I turned to music, my soul
just soared, backed by the
EL WEATHER THIS WEEKEND
After last weekend’s flooding, it
should please many to know that this
weekend is set to be dry and sunny.
Some light cloud is expected to
linger on Thursday but things remain
brisk with a maximum temperature of
23°C.
Friday sees slightly heavier cloud
group which she wrote and produced
the music for.
Their album was titled Music in Me
and helped profile her musical
prowess. The musical odyssey
culminated with Breaking Dawn, her
solo debut album.
“Elements of Soul was an
opportunity to test the market on
whether people will receive the kind
of music and message I wanted to
deliver. It was a platform to hone my
skills as an artists and focus on
chasing the dream of making music
to soothe, entertain and express
m y s e l f, ” Msesiwe said.
Msesiwe credits her family and
children as her greatest inspiration
“I am moved by helping others,
especially the vulnerable youth. I am
preoccupied with ensuring that
young people find their purpose in
life and blossom in the strengths,”
she said.
Msesiwe enjoys singing about life,
love, positivity, growth, faith and
humilit y.
“I write and sing about relatable
stuff. One has to be able to relate to
whatever song and genre they listen
to.
“It is for this reason that I migrate
from time to time from RnB, soul,
deep house and hip hop. I do not
make music for a particular target
market or audience but to express
myself for all to enjoy,” she said.
cover but it isn’t expected to last
long. Temperatures remain stable at
23°C.
By Saturday, the clouds should be
gone completely. The temperature
drops slightly to 21°C.
Temperatures warm back up to
23°C on Sunday with clear skies.

A true master of her art
AMANDA NANO
The road to her masters degree in fine arts at
Rhodes University in Makhanda (formerly
Grahamstown) was not an easy one for East
London’s Natasha Bezuidenhout.
She ground it out for eight years – all the while
taking on different syllabuses, funding her
studies out of her own pocket and having to
make do with bursaries.
“I’m not unhappy about the route I took. I
graduated on Saturday April 13 cum laude. It was
quite hard and there were times where I didn’t
sleep because it demanded a lot from me,”
Bezuidenhout said.
She also did her honours in art history at
Rhodes University as well a BTech in Fine Arts
from the Walter Sisulu University in East London.
Her masters thesis was centered around the
theme: “What is home?”.
Bit tersoet (bitter sweet) consists of snippets of
her childhood memories, centred around a long
260km walk she once undertook from East
London to Ugie with her mother and brother.
Some of Bezuidenhout's pieces are connected
to memories that consists of objects collected
from her walk, and others gathered while she
was at Rhodes. She specialised in ceramics for
her masters, while focusing on painting during
her BTech degree. Her clay bread display makes
use of old bread that was soaked in clay and kiln
cast so that the bread burns out. She added that
the medium challenged her as an artist in terms
of what she could create..
“Through this work, I was trying to uncover
pieces of a well-hidden family secret about why
we had to walk to Ugie. I also made use of
recycled clay to create the pieces,” she said.
Bezuidenhout was recently commissioned to
create an Easter egg which was displayed at
Vincent Park shopping mall as part of the
Vincent Park Paints Easter competition.
For those considering taking on their masters
in arts, she advises not to listen to naysayers but
rather to do things they want to do from their
own perspective..
“You need to be consistent, be strong-willed,
punctual and determined. Also, when you make
art, you need to be in the right head space and
be calm,” said Bezuidenhout.
Firm support
for educare
THEMBELA NDLUMBINI
Two former Zwelitsha educators
aim to make a big difference in
the lives of children when they
recently decided to “adopt” a
local school.
Former Ezikhalini Lower and
Primary School principal Tozana
Duze and former Litha Senior
Primary School teacher
Nondumiso Mbuli decided to
throw in their support for the
Zwelitsha Community Educare
centre after a recent visit.
“We are part and parcel of the
families here and we are happy to
gather with staff and our main
aim is to give support,” Duze said.
According to the school
governing body president Eric
Mboniswa, Zwelitsha Community
Educare takes in children up to
five years of age and prepare
them for primary school. He said
one of the biggest challenges
they face is one of resources.
“We are appealing to former
pupils, parents, and the Zwelitsha
community to intervene as we are
struggling to educate the leaders
of tomorrow,” Mboniswa said.
“We need mattresses, blankets,
toys, renovations to the school
buildings, as well as additional
securit y.”
In addition to Duze and Mbuli,
Zwelitsha Community Educare
has received support from local
churches as well.
The Zwelitsha branch of the
Methodist Church of Southern
Africa has donated chairs and
tables while His Glory Temple
continues to donate soup for the
pupils every Monday.
ANC Youth
League make
voices heard
THEMBELA NDLUMBINI
The Zwelitsha branch of the ANC Youth League
(ANCYL) recently organised a rally at a local car
wash to raise awareness about land issues and
unemployment.
The rally was led by branch president
Siyabonga Sizani. ANCYL president Collen
Maine was scheduled to attend but had to
withdraw due to other commitments.
“As the youth of this [ANCYL] branch, we
want to sort out the big matter of land that was
grabbed in 1652 by Van Riebeeck and we want
all the things they took by force to come to our
people,” Sizani said.
Local businessman Moxolisi “Gxagxa” Qwesha
also attended the rally and expressed support
for the Youth League and its mission. According
to him, infrastructure had been seriously
neglected in the Zwelitsha area. He pointed to
the numerous water leaks that have sprung up
in and around his businesses.
“As a veteran of the ANC, my complaint is
this: why do the people who work with water in
BCMM not sort this problem out because it’s
been happening for a couple of days now,”
Qwesha said.
He said seeing all that water going to waste
was “painful” and that taxpayers shouldn’t be
made to pay for resources that they don’t even
get to use.
Clear, sunny
skies ahead
NO MORE: Zwelitsha residents staged a protest last week marching on Bhisho to voice their concerns over a lack of service delivery and unemployment.
They called on Buffalo City Metro to intervene and demanded that government acts on alleged corruption
Picture: THEMBELA NDLUMBINI
Residents can look forward to clear skies
this weekend to compensate for last
week’s deluge.
Thursday starts off with a crisp
maximum temperature of 22°C which is
accompanied by some light cloud and
low winds of 14km/h from the
S o u t h - We st .
Friday sees things turn a bit chillier as
the temperature drops to 21°C. Some
cloud still remains but should be gone by
the end of the day. Winds increase to
22km/h but this too shouldn’t last too
long.
By Saturday, all cloud should have
cleared up which will certainly make the
weekend more enjoyable. The
temperature remains steady at 21°C and
the wind will die back down to just
11km/h, this time switching to the
S o u t h - E a st .
Sunday will be the warmest day of the
weekend with temperatures climbing up
to a pleasant 25°C. The skies will remain
clear but followed by rising winds of
22km/h.

MATTHEW FIELD
BCM executive mayor Xola Phakathi
has called on East London residents
to assist Port St Johns following
major flooding brought about by
heavy rains over the weekend.
“Our hearts go out to everyone
affected by the devastating
#PortStJohns floods and we pray for
the safety of those still being
evacuated and the rescue workers
who have been deployed there, ”he
said. “We will continue to monitor
the situation and assist in whatever
way possible,” said Phakathi in a
statement on released on his
Facebook page.
Phakathi said that the Port St
Johns Disaster Satellite Centre is
calling for urgent donations of
mattresses, blankets, bedding, food,
and heaters.
The flooding in Port St Johns
comes after torrential downpours
experienced across the country over
the weekend which has destroyed
homes, forced many to evacuate, and
claimed the lives of at least 33
people so far.
Those looking to assist can contact
the satellite centre's donation
coordinator Thandazwa Thwatshuka
at 073-598-8082.
MATTHEW FIELD
I’m sure no one’s going to deny
that BCM has its problems. We’ve
certainly reported on plenty in the
p a st .
However, if you stop to think
about it, you realise that there’s
plenty to love about the area as
well.
From the rich natural beauty to
the deep political history, from
sundowners at the beach to nights
of entertainment at the Guild,
there’s a lot that we as residents
can take for granted sometimes.
Thankfully, our readers are
always on hand to remind us of the
many magnificent things going on
in and around BCM.
Whether it’s by sending in letters
or submitting photographs, our
readers continue to share the many
wonders this area still has to offer
So thank you to all the budding
photographers who have shared
their pictures with the GO! &
Express. Your work has amazed and
inspired us and we hope you will
continue to do so.
ABANDONED: The DA has accused BCM of misusing funds put aside for the upgrade for the Mdantsane NU2
swimming pool
Picture: SUPPLIED
DA’s outcry over
R3m pool upgrade
MATTHEW FIELD
The DA has levelled criticism at
Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) for
the lack of work done on the
Mdantsane NU2 swimming pool
despite R3m being set aside for
upgrades and promises that the pool
would be open to the public by
December 2018.
DA councillor Bill Gould recently
took part in an inspection of the pool
alongside DA Eastern Cape premier
candidate Nqaba Bhanga.
“Other than the removal of some
dilapidated brick walls and an
abandoned partially-completed
concrete block wall, very little has
been achieved with the R3m,” said
Gould.
He said it was a “disgrace” that the
pool – which was first closed in the
1980s – could be left derelict despite
25 years of democratic rule.
He compared it to the project to
upgrade Fleet Street which was first
announced in 2017. At the time of
writing, the project is incomplete
with the bustling intersection still
lacking traffic markers, leading to
much confusion among drivers.
“The DA demands a proper
investigation into what happened to
the swimming pool upgrade funds,
including a forensic audit where
there is a suspicion of corruption.
“We will also escalate this matter
to the DA EC shadow MEC for
cooperative governance and
traditional affairs Vicky Knoetze to
take the issue up in the Bhisho
l e g i s l at u r e , ” said Gould.
BCM had not responded to a
request for comment at the time of
going to print.
College Street Primary School will host their
first Autism Awareness Day on Saturday as
April is Autism Awareness Month.
The event will be held from 9am to 12pm
and entry is free. College Street caters for
autistic children as well as mildly cognitively
impaired children.
“The intention is to gather together people
and organisations who have knowledge or
information about some of the challenges
faced by children on the Autism spectrum.
“Our hope is that our parents will be
exposed to what is available out there to
support them. Having a child with autism can
be an expensive exercise for parents, but they
are also prepared to do what it takes to
support their children,” e d u c at i o n a l
psychologist Julie Cromhout said.
She said there would be tables available in
their school hall where professionals would be
on hand to answer general questions.
Companies can use the opportunity to show
their products and brochures will be available.
“We are not aiming to endorse any product
available and no sales will be made. Some
speakers have been invited to share
encouragement and practical support from
parents who are also affected by autism.
“The point is that there are resources in
East London, including families with
experience, and they are best equipped to
know what could help. We are all learning and
increasing our knowledge about autism – this
is what the open day will be about,” Cromhout
said.
“The main criteria for a diagnosis of autism
include: challenges with communication,
social interaction and social imagination,
of ten accompanied by repetitive actions.”
Cromhout said Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) could have a range of different effects.
Some are pre-verbal and children with autism
may need to learn alternative ways of
communicating. Some children have sensory
issues, anxiety and ADHD can also be present
as well as learning disabilities.
Some individuals can also be gifted in
certain areas – some could go on to become
engineers, writers or doctors etc.
Regardless of how autism manifests, what
all people affected need is recognition,
support and opportunities, Cromhout said.
‘Come Sunday’ is
one powerful movie
MATTHEW FIELD
Come Sunday is a true gem of a
film, one that manages to convey a
powerful message in a way that
resonates with believers and
non-believers alike.
The film is based on an episode
from the US-based National Public
Radio (NPR) series This American
L i fe and follows the true-life story of
Carlton Pearson, the charismatic
head of a Pentecostal mega-church
in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
After learning about the suicide
of his unbelieving uncle and seeing
news reports of the Rwandan
genocide, Pearson undergoes a
crisis of faith which leads him to
make an outrageous statement
during his next sermon: hell isn’t
real and all are saved by God in the
end (in other words, Universalism).
We then watch Pearson deal with
the fallout of his change in beliefs,
from losing half his congregation
overnight to having close friends
and family ostracise him. He is
even submitted to a heresy trial by
the Joint College of
African-American Pentecostal
Bishops.
Whether or not you agree with
Pe a r s o n ’s theological position, it’s
hard not to be moved while
watching this film.
Chiwetel Ejiofor’s portrayal of
Pearson is breathtaking and does
an amazing job of expressing the
internal struggle the character goes
through. Ejiofor brings a surprising
amount of depth to this character
and it’s hard not to sympathise with
him.
The supporting cast is equally
brilliant. Jason Segel as Pearson’s
best friend Henry is equally torn by
Pe a r s o n ’s revelations but for the
opposite reason: he still follows the
traditional Pentecostal path and
sees his friend’s shift as a personal
betrayal of everything they’ve
worked for.
Martin Sheen plays Pearson’s
mentor Oral Roberts and while I’m
not as sympathetic towards this
character as others (he flat out says
he’s okay with his queer son
burning in hell), Sheen does
manage to bring a level of nuance
to him that he stops short of
becoming a stereotype.
The true highlight is Condola
Rashad as Gina, Pearson’s wife.
Watching her go from an obedient
p a st o r ’s wife to a more confident,
outspoken woman is truly delightful
and Rashad is perfect for the role!
Pupils enjoy Easter fun
SIVENATHI GOSA
The Peggy Nesta Foundation held an
Easter Fun Day last Thursday at Pefferville
Primary School.
“The Easter Fun Day is normally on a
Saturday and open to the public. However
due to the school being under
construction, we have decided in
conjunction with the school principal and
teachers to have the event for the
Pefferville Primary pupils only,” Pe g g y
Nesta CEO Valda van Heerden said.
The foundation gave away 650 party
packs while the teachers organised a
modelling, dancing and singing
competition. “They pulled out all the stops
to make it real. The winners walked
around with pride with their crowns and
prizes,” Van Heerden said
The Peggy Nesta Foundation was
established in 2011 by Gaster Sharpley
after the passing of his mother, Peggy
Nesta Sharpley.
“After seven productive years, the
foundation in 2018 resolved to extend its
registration from being a Section 21
company to being a non-profit
organisation (NGO) registered with the
relevant authorities and with a duly
constituted board that operates under the
vision of the founding member,” Va n
Heerden said.
The foundation is currently committed
to programmes that are intended to uplift
communities in need, to empower the
youth with knowledge and provide legal
support to reduce substance abuse.
“We want to salute the Pefferville staff
including the non-teaching staff who
entertained our precious children until
1pm when other schools were dismissed
at 11am for the Easter Holidays,” said Van
Heerden. EASTER FUN: Peggy Nesta Foundation CEO Valda van Heerden, centre, at the Easter Fun Day last Thursday Picture:SUPPLIED
Aaron McIlroy is ready to tickle your
funny bones as his one-man comedy
show takes place from April 30 to
May 2 at the Guild Theatre.
The comedian has kept South
African audiences in stitches for a
number of years, most recently with
the debut run of ADHD at the 2018
National Arts Festival Fringe.
His show takes a hilarious look at
the “problems” and other “d i st u r b i n g
behavioural patterns” of ADHD, all of
which are charmingly portrayed by
McIlroy. The show is scripted by
McIlroy and Patrick Kenny, with
Kenny wearing the director’s cap.
Tickets are available through
Computicket at R145, or R125 for
block bookings of 20 more.
The shows start at 7.30pm
over Easter fun activities
AMANDA NANO
A first-of-its-kind Easter themed activity
for children was held at Belgravia Flats in
Southernwood on Saturday.
Local tenant Naledi Seboni was the
brains behind the event, wanting to
organise a day filled with fun and activity
in the complex she lives in.
“I approached the Housing Association
of East London (HAEL) to host this event,
and they went as far as sponsoring more
than half of the budget. My organising
committee also assisted a lot,” Seboni
said.
Jumping castles, pizza, music, games,
Ester egg hunts and a visit from the
Easter Bunny were just some of the many
fun activities the children took part in.
Seboni was prompted to do this after
observing the behaviour of children in the
complex.
“I'm raising boys and I've noticed the
mannerisms and attitude of some older
boys could become a problem. I wanted
to bring them together so they may get to
know one another, as well as their
parents,” she said.
She hopes this will become a regular
event as some have expressed their
appreciation, despite some skeptics.
“I've noticed that people are less likely
to entertain things that they're not aware
of. Some parents weren't welcoming or
interested about the event,” Seboni said.
KNOW YOUR STUFF: Stirling Primary School hosted the SACEE Inter-School General Knowledge Quiz for grade 4-7 pupils last
week. Well done to all the teams, some from who came from afar-afield as Mthatha to participate in this fun and festive evening.
Top acts to perform
at first three-day jazz
fest in Eastern Cape
SIVENATHI GOSA
The Eastern Cape will host its first
three-day jazz festival in East
London later this year at the
Abbotsford Christian Centre.
This will be the first of what will
hopefully become an annual festival
aimed at embracing and reviving
jazz culture in the province.
Festival founder and director of T
Mlitha Events Group, Mlindi Ntloko,
said he wants to give the people of
the Eastern Cape the show of a
l i fe t i m e .
“We will kickstart the first day of
the festival with a memorial lecture
at the East London City Hall and on
Saturday, the main event will take
place. On Sunday we will host a golf
day at the East London Golf Club,”
Ntloko said.
“This concept came about three
years ago. I have always attended
events like the Cape Town Jazz
Festival as well as the Standard
Bank Joy of Jazz and realised that
Eastern Cape jazz lovers were being
starved of a fashionable and pure
jazz event that upholds the
standards of these national events,”
he said.
The Eastern Cape musicians at
the event will include Lulama
Gawulana, Dumza Maswana and
Retsi Pule.
“Maswasna and Pule are the
ambassadors of the festivals. The
reason we have two ambassadors is
that they both represent different
generations of music,” said Ntloko.
A media briefing will be held on
Friday at The Square in the East
London CBD.
“This media briefing is going be
an event on its own, as there will be
performances and we want five
local artists to submit on our social
media platforms, as we want them
to showcase their talents at the
festival in September.
“We are leaving a legacy behind,
we are embracing music that is
produced here in the province.
“There will be six national artists
and five local artists, which will be
announced on Friday at the launch,”
Ntloko said.
MZIWOXOLO MAKALIMA: ‘I drew
inspiration from the iconic Eastern
Cape aloe plant. The colour palette
stands to address freedom of
expression in use of colour’.
NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT:‘This artwork responds to the
idea of ‘Our Beautiful Eastern Cape’ and reflects the
diverse colour palette of this province. My inclusion of
the hexagon pattern speaks to the intricate network of
flora and fauna that the bee forms part of.’
LYNNE PRICE: ‘Painting this egg has
been an absolute joy. I’ve put a bit
of a graphic spin on the design, and
have carried the wonderful colours
and interesting linework all the
way around the back of the egg.
I’ve also used oil pastels on
cardboard egg boxes.’
UNATHI FENI:’I grew up in East
London but found my inspiration in
the rural landscape and atmosphere
of the Tabankulu area. The
image reflects the rich culture and
social background of the Xhosa and
Pondo people, for me, the real
Eastern Cape atmosphere’.
KATE TEESDALE: ‘I set out to
question the South African
celebration of Easter, a
European tradition observing
the advent of Spring and its
associated rituals of fertility,
most famously symbolised by
rabbits and eggs.’
GO REPORTER
Vincent Park Shopping Centre
recently commissioned five local
Eastern Cape artists to decorate
larger-than-life Easter eggs. The
eggs form part of the Vincent
Park Paints Easter campaign and
will be on display in the mall
until the end of May.
The artists worked in
collaboration with Lynne Price,
Cracking Easter egg display
owner of “I Left my Heart in
Africa”, a Chintsa-based art
i n i t i at i v e .
“Working with local artists and
exposing the public to the
interesting conversations around
the eggs and their
interpretations of the brief has
been inspiring.
“Furthermore, the interactions
with the public about creativity,
art in schools, having art as a
career, what creative thought
does for children and many
more, was wonderful,” Price
said.
Price was also responsible for
interpreting the work of
seven-year-old Charlene Erasmus
onto a 3D model after she won
the Vincent Park Paints Easter
competition.
(Girl’s winning egg design
revealed, April 18)
“Each artist has brought a
unique and dynamic
interpretation to the artwork
brief of ‘Our Beautiful Eastern
Cape’,” Vincent Park centre
manager Joseph Parsley said.

Spicy radicchio
delights, detox
and nourish
your body
A N A STA C I A
SAMPSON
Among the many
varieties of leafy
vegetables, some
are more special
than others.
One such
vegetable is a
reddish white
leaf called
radicchio which
is known to have
been originally cultivated in 15th-century Italy
and continues to delight Italian cuisine to this
d ay.
Radicchio is high in Vitamin K, which makes
this leafy vegetable a promoter of strong bones
and healthy blood clotting. Vitamin K has an
active role in the calcium utilisation in your
b o d y.
It goes without saying you are boosting fibre
intake with radicchio.
It is not like gentle lettuce or spinach leaves,
as it is a bit more robust, so it is great to add to
st e w s .
When lightly grilled, this can be a really
healthy snack.
Its flavour is bitter and somewhat spicy, which
is drastically reduced when cooked.
What causes the bitter taste in radicchio? It is
a substance called lactucopicrin, which has
been shown by science to have anti-malaria
proper ties.
T h at ’s not all. It also has been found to posses
sedating effects – some ancient Romans
believed radicchio to be a remedy for insomnia
– as well as pain-reducing effects.
What we do know is the high antioxidant and
fibre content in this leafy vegetable definitely
does promote detoxification and helps rid the
body of nasty, harmful toxins.
So in a roundabout way, it could be said to
support “purifying” your body.
Radicchio thrives in cooler weather and likes
to be watered often. It takes about three months
after you plant its seeds to harvest.
Even though it grows near the ground where
worms are known to be found, eating the leaves
of this plant is said to protect against intestinal
worms and parasites.
So radicchio truly does support cleansing your
body of toxins, parasites and other rubbish. It
helps keeps you light, full of vitality and clean
from the inside!
Events giving rise to Workers’
Day still tragically relevant
MATTHEW FIELD
May 1 is an important
day on the global
calendar. I am of course
referring to
International Workers’
Day. For some, the day
will be nothing more
than an excuse to take
the day off for a
change.
While a break from
the daily grind is
certainly something to
be appreciated, you
shouldn’t dismiss May 1
as just an ordinary
public holiday because
it certainly isn’t.
International Workers’
Day is special and
represents an important
part of the global
w o r ke r s ’ st ruggle.
To truly understand
its importance, we have
to go back all the way
to 19th-century US.
At this point in time,
one of the focal points
for the growing labour
struggle was the fight
for an eight-hour work
day. Up to that point,
workers had been
forced to endure work
hours of up to 16 hours
a day, often for six or
seven days a week.
Working conditions
were atrocious, labour
laws were virtually
non-existent, and
inequality was
s k y r o c ke t i n g .
In 1884, the
Federation of Organised
Trades and Labour
Unions (FOTLU, later the
American Federation of
Labour) released a
statement declaring
that “eight hours shall
constitute a legal day’s
labour from and after
May 1 1886”.
When FOTLU’s
deadline arrived and
the much-coveted eight
hours remained
unachieved, workers
took action. May 1 1886
marked the first-ever
May Day celebrations
with more than 300,000
workers in more than
13,000 businesses
across the US walking
out, bringing the
country to a standstill.
Anarchists in
particular took on a
leading role in the
struggle, especially
anarcho-syndicalism
which found a natural
audience among
u n i o n i st s .
Despite the hysterical
predictions from
newspapers and
politicians, the
demonst rations
remained peaceful with
parades and even
musical performances
drawing public support
to the cause.
Two days later, the
police brought violence
into the equation.
On May 3 1886, a
demonstration by the
Metal Workers’ Union in
Chicago were set upon
by police and armed
members of the
notorious Pinkerton
National Detective
A g e n c y.
Police began beating
p r ot e st e r s
indiscriminatingly and
when the workers
retaliated by throwing
rocks, they were fired
upon with live
ammunition. Two
strikers were killed and
many more wounded.
Following the attack,
the workers convened a
meeting the next day in
Haymarket Square.
Turn-out was low due to
bad weather, with only
3,000 showing up.
The meeting
convened peacefully
and union member
Samuel Fielden was
giving the closing
address when a police
force of 180 officers
ordered the workers to
disperse immediately.
Suddenly, a bomb
was thrown into the
group of police, killing
one and injuring several
others. To this day, it is
not known who exactly
threw the bomb with
conspiracies pointing
towards wildly different
suspects such as local
anarchists, radicals
from out of town, and
even a police spy.
Regardless, the police
immediately opened fire
on the crowd. No
official numbers were
released but it is
estimated that about
seven or eight workers
were killed with many
more injured. During
the chaos, six officers
were fatally wounded by
their own companions’
indiscriminate gun fire.
Following the
Haymarket Massacre,
as it came to be known,
the US government
embarked on a vicious
clampdown on leftist
leaders and
o r g a n i s at i o n s .
With regards to the
bomb, eight people
were tried as
accessories to murder:
Albert Parsons, August
Spies, Samuel Fielden,
Oscar Neebe, Michael
Schwab, George Engle,
Adolph Fischer, and
Louis Lingg.
The trial began on
June 21 and was a farce
from the beginning.
For starters, the
normal method of jury
selection – randomly
drawing names from a
box – was abandoned
and instead replaced
with a special bailiff by
Grinnell. The final jury
was made up of
prominent
bussinessmen, their
clerks, and a relative of
one of the dead
policemen.
Secondly, three of the
eight men tried weren’t
even at Haymarket
Square on the day of
the bomb attack and no
evidence was provided
that any of the others
had contributed.
However, as Grinnell
said in his closing
arguments, the trial was
never really about
innocence or guilt, but
about setting an
example: “Law is on
trial. Anarchy is on trial.
These men have been
selected, picked out by
the Grand Jury, and
indicted because they
were leaders. Gentlemen
of the jury; convict these
men, make examples of
them, hang them and
you save our
institutions, our society.”
Neebe was sentenced
to 15 years in prison and
the other seven to death.
Parsons, Engels, Spies
and Fischer were
hanged on November 11
1887 with Lingg
committing suicide the
day before the execution.
Schwab and Fielden
had their sentences
reduced to life
imprisonment.
The trial served as a
focal point for the
global labour
movement and in 1889,
the Second
International – an
i n t e r n at i o n a l
organisation made up
of union leaders and
leftist thinkers – v ot e d
to commemorate May 1
in their memory.
It quickly caught on
and soon enough, May 1
became an
i n t e r n at i o n a l l y
recognised holiday.
The events that gave
birth to the first
International Workers’
Day may have
happened more than
100 years ago, but they
still remain tragically
relevant today.
Despite all the
progress made by
labour advocates,
workers in SA and
around the world are
still fighting for a
liveable wage and
quality working
conditions while
governments and
corporations are still
working hard to
suppress them.
So as you enjoy your
May 1 break, take a
moment to reflect on all
the privileges labour has
fought for over the years
and consider how much
still needs to be done.

HISTORIC FACT: The inaugural East London Municipality was established
on April 22 1873 when the three villages clustered about the mouth of the
Buffalo River – East London West Bank, East London East Bank, and
Panmure – were formally merged into a single municipality. The foundation
stone of the East London City Hall, situated at the corner of Oxford and
Argyll Streets, was laid on February 20 1897.The building was completed
two years later and officially inaugurated on October 5 1899. The clock
tower was added much later to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond
Jubilee. As a result, it was named the Victoria Tower. The East London City
Hall was commemorated with an official South African postage stamp in
HISTORIC MOMENT: Hudson Park Primary School played their first ever Saturday fixture against Selborne Primary School at
the Hudson fields on April 13. The day started off well for Hudson Park Primary as they won both U9A and U9B games. However,
Selborne Primary then showed their rugby prowess which saw them winning the rest of the derby. The U13A game was a tightly
contested fixture and Selborne Primary was able to finish the game by winning 29-10
BLOW ME AWAY: New name and a new appearance are
key notes of the Isuzu D-Max pick-up range
Picture: SUPPLIED
Isuzu D-Max
a true champ
In the Eastern Cape, Isuzu is
synonymous with Ironman, Southern
Kings rugby and other macho
activities.
With its new D-Max pick-up
one-tonners and double cabs, it
wants to portray the “more than
t u f fe n u f f ” image for these vehicles
throughout Southern Africa.
Just how tough are these
four-wheel ironmen from Port
Elizabeth? Do they keep the driver
and occupants comfortable and
happy as they carry out their
strongarm work, as well as while
cruising on the open road?
We wheeled out the flagship
D-Max 300 TD 4x4 LX Double Cab on
a test session via the
uncompromising mountain roads
outside Oudtshoorn and surrounding
areas, to get some answers.
The last time I visited Isuzu in
Japan, I came away convinced that
it’s firstly, strongly, an
engine-oriented motor manufacturer.
Now, one look at the styling of the
D-Max tells me that this ethos has
drastically changed. This new Isuzu is
handsome and like no other pick-up,
with a frontal countenance that is
forceful of design. The new Xenon
headlights are Bi-LED and do their bit
for the vehicle’s head-on styling, as
do the new, colour-coded radiator
grill and front bumper.
Side-on, the rear window line
sweeps up almost immediately after
the B-pillar, similar to that of a clubor
crew-cab vehicle. But not so, this
is a full-form four-door.
The 18-inch aluminium wheels
stand well clear of the aggressive
arches, enabling more than usual
suspension travel. However, the
fancy (but inhibiting) side steps and
rear tow hitch on this model will
prevent one from taking on really
severe off-road work. Ground
clearance, in spite of this, allows a
wading depth of 600mm
Much as the D-Max’s styling and
cosmetics have been upped, so the
mechanicals have largely been left
unaltered.
You say the Isuzu ‘s four-cylinder
turbo-diesel motor does not match
the 3-litre V6 or five-cylinder units of
some of the main opposition? Well,
this one has big piston ‘p ot s ’ fo r
more torque and it comes with
380Nm at a low 1,800r/min and
130kW of power at 3,600r/min.
Not earth-shattering, but I got the
impression that this engine is
designed to work at well-below tress
levels and should still deliver
optimally way beyond when the
others may have reached the end of
their lives. Our test pick-up came
with a six-speed manual gearbox
with a suitable ratio for a large
variety of situations – including
pukka off-road work. Four-wheel
drive is simply dialled in on the fly
via a rotary control on the centre
console, just behind the gear lever.
Active safety features include
electronic stability control, electronic
brake force distribution, hill start
assist and hill descent control for
those whose off-road driving may not
be up to scratch.
Also, this package returns very low
fuel consumption figures compared
with the D-Max’s detractors,
averaging out at just 8.2L/100km, for
a variety of driving conditions.
Together with an 80l diesel fuel tank,
a better range with a 2,999cc chunky
double cab 4x4 would be hard to
find. The occupants of the LX version
have the benefit of leather
upholstery, fully
electrically-six-way-adjustable front
seats and sumptuous carpeting and
cladding. The cab is 1,860mm wide,
offering sufficient shoulder room for
five adults.
The driver has rear parking
distance sensors and imagery that
show on a nine-inch ‘i n fot a i n m e n t ’
screen up front on the dash. The
electrically-adjustable polished
chrome external rear view mirrors are
heated and fold away in tight
situations or for bush work. Those
wicked-looking headlights also
incorporate integrated LED daytime
running lights on the LX model.
An Alpine integrated touchscreen
infotainment system has an AM/FM
radio, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod
control, USB ports, WiFi connectivity
and embedded satellite navigation. I
found its operation a bit of a
challenge at first, but it was the old
story of having done it just once, it
was easy thereafter.
Our D-Max 4x4 LS standard has a
price tag of R600,700 without the
optional extras. Its warranty extends
over five years/120,000km, there is a
five-year corrosion warranty and five
-year roadside assistance, while the
service plan extends over five years
or 90,000km. Service intervals are
every 15,000km.
MATTHEW FIELD
As part of his ongoing efforts to raise
awareness for hearing impairment in
children and the challenges it brings,
local athlete Robert Petschel will be
visiting the Carel du
Toit Centre on Friday.
The visit will form
part of his larger
awareness campaign
which also involves
taking part in the
upcoming Comrades
M a r at h o n .
“In February 2019,
my seven-year old
son Martin was
diagnosed with
moderate to severe hearing loss in
higher frequencies. A week later, he
received his first set of hearing aids,”
said Petschel.
While he is happy that his son
could get the help he needed,
Petschel acknowledged that not
every child could be as lucky. He
then decided to use his running to
bring attention to the challenges
faced by children with hearing
disabilities.
“The Comrades Marathon has
always been a race that I wanted to
run. After a 16-year break from
running, I decided to start again
specifically with the Comrades in
mind. My chance came in 2016 when
I moved from Marshstrand to
Gonubie,” he said.
Petschel ran his first Comrades in
2017 and ran it again
in 2018 despite being
hampered by injuries
in both runs.
He managed to
complete his 2017
Comrades in a time of
seven hours and 47
minutes and his 2018
marathon in 9:43.
This year, he
completed the Buffs
Marathon in 2:49
which he says is his
“new personal best”.
“My aim is to pick up my weekly
mileage to 150km a week, running
two long runs of 55-65km and my
other Sunday long runs between
35-45km. If I can maintain my level
of training and all goes to plan, I
believe I will be able to finish
Comrades this year in a sub-seven
hour time,” said Petschel.
