MARC AND NICKY NEAR ST SAVIOURS CHURCH
at Montville in St Peter Port, for
example. This walk was a real
favourite of ours. We walked from
the lighthouse by Castle Cornet, to
narrow steps, roads, lanes and this
unexpected green lane at Montville.
It was such a surprise to have a
wonderful green lane and mini
forest in St Peter Port,’ said Marc.
There are things you discover by
foot that you’ll never see by car,
the pair explained. From gardens
filled with bronze statues and little
gems of Guernsey’s agricultural
past to gravestones. Sometimes,
they even come across green lanes
that aren’t already marked on the
map nor did they know existed.
‘We were enjoying these walks
and almost every time you see
something you wouldn’t expect.
So, that’s why we started the
Facebook page,’ said Marc. Now,
after each walk, they highlight
the roads walked on the map,
share photographs of things
they’ve spotted along the way,
and report on the number of
steps it’s taken to complete the
route. ‘You just get a warm feeling
about sharing something you’ve
enjoyed with other people;
being outdoors and making the
best of the island,’ said Nicky.
The Walking it all Facebook page
has followers from the Bailiwick,
the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.
There isn’t too much left of
the map for Marc and Nicky to
complete. ‘There tends to be the
odd road here and there that we
need to do and there’s a lot of
repetition. There are a couple
of small town walks we need to
do, but no obvious routes that
don’t involve walking over bits
we’ve done before,’ said Marc.
The pair said that the walks
provide time to talk as a couple
and that walking is a great form
of exercise. ‘We talk about so
many different things when we’re
walking,’ said Nicky. ‘It’s good for
your mental health; just being
outdoors in the fresh air – even
for your relationship as you
tend to talk more about things
in general.’ Nicky said it’s also
been fun to take on the project
as a joint endeavour. ‘When you
set your sights on something it
brings you together as well.’
