MESSAGE FROM THE 

OFFICE 

“Live life to the fullest and focus on 

the positive.”

Over the last few months we competed 

at different levels in athletics 

and swimming and saw our school achieving huge success. Much 

progress has been made and I extend a word of congratulations and 

heartfelt thanks to all our coaches, athletes, and swimmers for their 

hard work over the last few months. Congratulations to our High 

school on winning the E-league Inter high athletics. You made us all 

very proud! Congratulations to Jason Houy and Thapelo Maepa from 

our Primary school who will take part in the Gauteng athletics championships. 

There was a significant increase in participation by our 

learners in school activities and I applaud them for that. We are also 

hosting the Curro 7’s regional competition at our school on 8 and 9 

March. As of this year, the winning teams of competing schools will 

go through to the Nationals and thus no Regional team will be selected.

and we will communicate the detail of the venue and business hours 

to you. We have also done a survey on stationery and the possibility 

of selling stationery at school. We will also communicate the outcome 

of the survey to you in weeks to come. 

The Head of our Castle, Ms Elna Groenewald, as previously communicated, 

has resigned and will relocate to the Western Cape. I would 

like to thank her for her service to our school, specifically the Castle. 

I will personally miss her as part of my management team, but we 

will also miss her energy and enthusiasm as a teacher at the Castle. 

On behalf of Curro Roodeplaat I would like to wish her all the best. 

We are in the process of appointing a new Head of our Castle as 

well as a teacher in Ms Groenewald’s place. Ms Lettie Swanepoel is 

still on sick leave and I am sad to inform you that she will not return 

to school. Due to her medical condition she is unfit to continue with 

her task as a teacher and we will make a permanent appointment as 

soon as possible. 

Allow me to wish all our coaches and learners well as our winter 

sports have already commenced. Our sports teams will go on tour 

during the holiday and I wish them all the best. We will reap the fruit 

of these tours/camps once the different leagues commence.

HIGH SCHOOL 

HAPPENINGS 

Dear Parent 

The year is well on its way and a 

number of boxes on the calendar 

have already successfully been 

ticked. I am proud to say that what 

we lack in talent, we make up for in participation. During the number 

of swimming galas that we have been a part off, every possible 

spot was filled by a Curro Roodeplaat swimmer. I would like to thank 

every swimmer and coach for their perseverance and wish them well 

for their upcoming Inter-High. 

Track and field events are a team sport and that was evident in the 

way that our athletes encouraged one another. With all the weather 

challenges, rain during meetings and heat during training, I still 

think that we were successful by achieving 4th place during the recent 

Inter-Curro Athletics meeting. I asked of the learners, “Just beat 

the one athlete in front of you” and I must say that was exactly what 

they did. Our supporters on the pavilion were relentless in their effort. 

Their role should NEVER be down played. It is time for us to 

understand in order to go to the next level we have to start with our

athletics in the fourth term and do a formal pre-season training programme. 

We can’t afford to say that we will stop with sport in the 

last term because we are focusing on academics. We should always 

be focusing on academics. We need to teach our learners to balance 

their lives because one doesn’t stop paying taxes because you are 

too busy. 

With a very young 1st cricket team playing in the Coca Cola T20 

competition, yet again a first for Curro Roodeplaat, many valuable 

lessons were learned. Two of our learners were subsequently included 

into the provincial HP group and we look forward to what the 

season has instore for them. We are starting with our Winter Sports 

Programme and by the likes of it, it is going to be a Duzi. We are 

hosting the Curro 7’s again on the weekend of 8 March 2019. Please 

come and support us in this endeavour. Sport tours and camps 

during the coming holiday was communicated well in advance and 

is a necessity for all to attend. 

Our choir is currently practising in earnest and if last year was anything 

to go by, we are in for a treat. We are also moving into the oratorical 

season with our internal Afrikaans and English competitions 

starting the year off. We have had an overwhelming interest and enrolments 

in the Van Huyssteens Oratorical Festival. It is so important 

to be able to converse with others and to stand your ground in front 

of a crowd. Compliments are in order to the language departments

in growing this art form. 

Thank you to Mr Niemand for allowing us to implement new ventures 

such as adding a growth incentive to learners in each grade for 

Mathematics and Science. We have received unreal dividends in 

growth up to an unbelievable 40% in Science just to mention one result. 

Well done to all our academic achievers and may the Academic 

Prize Giving be an inspiration to all our learners. 

As shareholders, with us, in your child’s future we ask of you to support 

the school and please make an appointment to share any suggestions 

to make the ride more efficient and pleasurable.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORT 

CRICKET 

Our first team participated in the Coca-Cola T20 tournament during 

the first term. We are extremely proud of all our learners as we 

played against extremely tough opposition. It was a remarkable 

learning school for our team, and we are looking forward to build on 

the moment that was picked up during this tournament. 

We can also inform everyone, with proud hearts, that two of our 

learners, Stephen Maluleka and Theo Khumbuza, was chosen for the 

Northern Titans identification groups. These groups only consist out 

of 20 learners from the entire Pretoria region. We are truly proud on 

both these gents!

SWIMMING 

During the first term, our high school participated in two friendly 

swimming galas. There were 7 teams at both galas, and our swimmers 

did not disappoint. During the first gala we ended up in 4th 

place and during the second gala, we ended up in 3rd place. Good 

luck to all the swimmers for the remaining galas that will still take 

place.

ATHLETICS 

After a rainy start to the athletics season, our school pulled together 

and went to the Curro Inter high which took place at Germiston Athletics 

stadium. In 2018, Curro Roodeplaat ended in 5th place, and 

our learners were determined to improve on this result in 2019. We 

are proud to annonce that our team did improve on their results in 

2019 and ended in 4th place. The difference between 4th place and 

3rd place was only 22 points. We are truly proud of every single athlete, 

singer and spectator. They all acted as true ambassadors of Curro 

Roodeplaat on the day. 

Curro Roodeplaat also had the opportunity to participate in the 

TUKS TOP 10 meeting at the LC de Villiers Athletics stadium. Our 

learners competed during this meeting against the top athletes in 

South Africa and Namibia. We would like to congratulate the following 

learners on their remarkable achievements: 

• Perfect Ncube and Kago Thololoe - Joint 3rd place - Girls u/19 

High jump 

• Marnus de Bruyn - 6th place - Boys u/16 Long jump

EQUESTRIAN 

The high school equestrian team participated in ther first qualifier for 

SANESA this year on Saturday and Sunday, 9 and 10 February 2019 

. 

Congratulations to the equestrian team: 

Marike Hillocks and Sambuka received a 2nd and 11th place. 

Jenna-Lee dos Santos and Brandenburg Leandra rerceived a 17th 

and 19th place. 

Robyn van Nieuwenhuizen and Prins received a 5th and 11th place 

. 

Well done to these girls who did us proud. The equestrian team invites 

all Curro learners to attend the next qualifier that will be held at 

Misty Meadows on 9 and 10 March 2019. We also challenge you to 

start riding at any riding school and to become part of the riding fun 

and join our Curro equestrian team.

The year started in full swing and 

the first term is already nearing its end. Learners and educators are 

working diligently in all areas and we are proud of all the successes 

already achieved! 

Two of our athletes took part in the District meeting on Wednesday, 

20 February and qualified for the Gauteng meeting! We are extremely 

proud of Jason Houy and Thapelo Maepa. Read the sport 

column for more detail. 

Congratulations to the u.13 tennis boys with a successful season. 

They have lost only one match this season. 

Our rugby- and netball practices have already started and we invite 

all interested learners to join these sessions. A healthy body makes a

healthy mind! 

The internal Afrikaans orators was a successful event where home 

language learners as well as first additional language learners took 

part with confidence. The number of participants grows yearly and 

speeches of high quality were delivered. We are looking forward to 

the English orators. Proudly Curro Roodeplaat! Read the culture column 

for more detail. 

Thank you to all the grade 7 parents and the staff responsible for 

the Valentine’s dance. The grade 6 and 7 learners thoroughly enjoyed 

the evening and spent every minute on the dance floor! It is 

heart-warming to see how parents and staff take hands to the benefit 

of our learners. 

Curro Roodeplaat is the hosts for the Curro Regional 7’s. Please 

come and support our players on 8 and 9 March!

ordered online directly from the photographers. No orders or money 

will be handled by the school. 

The holiday is drawing nearer for a well-deserved rest. Please note 

that the school will close on Friday, 15 March at 10:00.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORT 

ATHLETICS 

Curro Roodeplaat competed in the athletics cluster meeting on 8 

February at Laerskool Tygerpoort. Every Roodie gave his/her best 

and made the school very proud. Congratulations to Jason Houy 

with his high jump results and Thapelo Maepa with his 80m hurdles 

results. Both these boys made it through to the district athletics. The 

district meeting took place on 20 February at Hoërskool Erasmus. 

Congratulations to Jason who received a gold medal in his high jump 

event with a winning height of 1.70m and Thapelo who received a 

silver medal in his hurdle event. Both athletes qualified for the Provincial 

Gauteng Championships.

The netball pre-season officially started on 4 February and our girls 

are very excited. Focusing on fitness might leave a few bodies aching, 

but at the end of the day the love for netball makes it all worthwhile 

and our girls end up learning invaluable netball skills.

On 21 February we played our first match against Danie Malan Primary 

School. Unfortunately play stopped due to severe thunder. 

During the first weekend of March our netball girls will attend a 

camp at Camp Discovery where great skills training awaits us and 

where we will also be given the opportunity to develop team work. 

Netball at Curro Roodeplaat is definitely something to look forward 

to and our girls are ready! 

EQUESTRIAN 

The primary school equestrian team participated in their first qualifier 

for SANESA this year held on Saturday and Sunday, 9 and 10 February 

2019. They did extremely well. 

Haylee Duarte participated with her lovely new horse, Lang Carel 

Bismark II. She participated in seven classes and received a 1st, 2nd,

3rd, 5th, 14th, 15th and 21st place. 

Rashelle Duarte and her pony, Picasso, participated in six classes and 

received a 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th place. 

Shakeira Lee-Davey and her lovely new pony, Derby, participated in 

five classes. They received a 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th place. 

Sulize Hillocks and Sticky Toffee participated in four new disciplines 

and received a 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th place. 

Well done to these girls who did us proud. The equestrian team invites 

all Curro learners to attend the next qualifier that will be held at 

Misty Meadows on 9 and 10 March 2019. We also challenge you to

PRIMARY SCHOOL CULTURE 

Culture started off with a bang for 2019 with the Afrikaanse Interne 

Redenaars in both the Foundation and Intersen phases. Congratulations 

to all the learners who took part, and especially to the top 3. 

In the Foundation phase, the top 3 were:

April 2019. Further communication will be sent to the learners who 

are taking part. 

A big thank you to the Grade 7 moms for making Valentine’s Day 

such a special day! The learners loved the goodies for sale, and we 

are sure many parents received a special gift on the day. The Valentine’s 

Day dance for Grades 6 and 7 learners was also a special night.

Lastly, we would like to remind parents and learners of the entry 

dates for the Pretoria Eisteddfod and the Curro Arts Superheroes 

(CAS) competition.

Geel by Friday, 28 February. Please remember to include the correct 

entry fee amount.

AFRIKAANSE REDENAARS: FOUNDATION PHASE 

Our grade 1-3 learners had their Afrikaans internal orators evening 

on Wednesday, 13 February. Even though they were quite nervous 

they overcame their fears and spoke beautifully. They were very 

quirky with their comments.

AFRIKAANSE REDENAARS: INTERSEN PHASE 

On 5 February 9 of our learners overcame their fears in front of seasoned 

judge and had their say. The learners each had to prepare a 

speech of about 2 – 4 minutes in length and had to convince the 

judges of their viewpoint. Three of our First Additional Language 

learners took part and amazed us with their self-confidence!

We would like to thank all our boys 

and girls who dressed up according 

to our colour-theme. Our shape 

dress-up day was a challenge, but 

with loads of creativity we all rose 

to the challenge. See the photos attached of our fun pancake day 

we had! 

We can’t wait to see what our Puppet show has in store for us. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every mommy 

and daddy that I had the privilege of meeting and building loving 

relationships with. It was a joyous journey and my memories will last 

forever. Thank you for all the support you have given me, as well as 

the trust you placed in me. I never thought when God gave me this 

opportunity, to be the head of the Castle, that I will be so blessed. 

With a heart full of appreciation and dear memories of my brilliant 

staff I have to mention that they helped me shine!
