our 38th Anniversary Issue of <strong>Retailers</strong><br />
Welcome to <strong>Forum</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong>! It is truly amazing<br />
how quickly time has flown by since our first issue was published in 1981.<br />
THERE are so many<br />
a blessing and a curse in both<br />
memories that we have of<br />
our humble beginnings when<br />
we started with $100 and a<br />
the publishing as well as the<br />
retailing industry.<br />
OVER the 38 years I have<br />
lot of dreams and hard work<br />
been fortunate to have<br />
to get our operation off the<br />
ground. Having worked at<br />
<strong>Forum</strong> Publishing for the last<br />
38-years it is truly one of the<br />
most unique experiences of<br />
my life. And one that I am<br />
extremely grateful of.<br />
WHEN I first handed out the first copy<br />
of our magazine, then called Flea Market<br />
<strong>Forum</strong> to local vendors in the New York<br />
area I had no idea of what the future<br />
would bring or even if we’d make it to the<br />
next issue with our shoestring financing.<br />
Now, here we are 456 issues (months)<br />
later, still publishing and proudly serving<br />
our industry!<br />
OUR Anniversary is very special to me<br />
and I want to share it with our readers<br />
old and new as well as our dedicated<br />
advertisers who make every issue possible.<br />
I often think back to the early years<br />
when we started, pre-computer, prefax<br />
machine when everything was done<br />
by hand. That included laying out the<br />
magazines, typing labels for mailing and<br />
hand sorting mail bags to delivery to the<br />
posy office.<br />
THERE was nothing easy back in the<br />
“old days” and technology has been both<br />
worked with some of the<br />
best staff in the publishing<br />
world, the finest printers and<br />
tradesmen. Many of the high<br />
school students who interned<br />
with us decades ago have gone<br />
onto successful careers and<br />
started their own families and businesses.<br />
All that have passed through our doors<br />
have felt the entrepreneurial spirit that<br />
pervades our offices through this day. Our<br />
company has been the epitome of the<br />
American dream that was started with<br />
$100 and a great deal of determination.<br />
ALONG the way our company went<br />
from starting in a studio apartment in<br />
the Bronx, New York to a one bedroom<br />
apartment in Sunnyside, queens to a<br />
commercial basement in Great Neck, Long<br />
Island to our first “nice’” office in Syosset,<br />
Long Island. In 1987 we purchased our<br />
current office building in Centerport, Long<br />
Island where we’ve been for the last 32<br />
years.<br />
ALONG this journey I have learned a<br />
great deal and continue to do so. Life<br />
holds great opportunity for us all - we just<br />
need to pay attention when it shows itself.<br />

I‘d never thought that back when I was<br />
22-years-old just starting to publish<br />
<strong>Forum</strong> that it would be a run lasting<br />
over three decades and one that I can<br />
honestly say I still enjoy as much today, 38<br />
years later, as when I started!<br />
Now, 38 years and 456 issues later, we<br />
celebrate embarking on our 39 th year<br />
servicing the wholesale/retail industry.<br />
Reflecting back over the years is always<br />
sentimental for me as I remember the<br />
birth of my daughter in 1983 and the<br />
7-days a week working with her crib in a<br />
corner of my office. I recall moving from<br />
our basement office in Great Neck to our<br />
first modern offices in Syosset, the birth<br />
of my son in 1987 and then purchasing<br />
our own office building in Centerport,<br />
where we remain today.<br />
They say that<br />
time flies, and it<br />
certainly does.<br />
My daughter’s<br />
now 35, with a<br />
newborn, while<br />
my son’s 32.<br />
Both of them<br />
have pursued<br />
careers in<br />
media and<br />
marketing.<br />

computer or fax machine (wow, am I old!).<br />
Now, technology changes constantly<br />
and we must all embrace and harness its<br />
power to stay ahead of the curve. We take<br />
our responsibility of guiding the market<br />
very seriously.<br />
As we start our 39 th year in the industry<br />
I’d like to thank everyone who has<br />
contributed to our business over the<br />
years and help us build what we like to<br />

Labor Department Set To Boost OT Threshold<br />
THIS is a gigantic news story that will effect many retailers and businesses across the United States.<br />
Workers who make less than about $35,000 a year will be eligible for overtime pay undre a long-awaited<br />
proposal the Labor Department is rumored to unveil soon.<br />
THE department is proposing a new regilation to update time-and-a-half pay requirements for all<br />
hours worked beyond a 40-hour work week. The ruling would raise the salary threshold under which<br />
workers are automatically entitled to overtime wages from about $24,000, but wouldn’t go to the<br />
$47,000 mark that was pushed by the Obama administration in the past. That proposal was immediately<br />
blocked by a federal judge in a Texas court.<br />
THE new rule would significantly expand the number of workers eligible for overtime pay. Of course it<br />
may be challenged in court, however worker advocates complain that the proposal doesn’t go far enough.<br />
Business groups around the country are worried about the new payroll costs that would be associated<br />
with this ruling.<br />
THE current administration’s approach to the overtime question has been watches closely by<br />
businesses in all industries. There have already been many lawsuits filed in class action suits for overtime<br />
pay from workers at some very large companies and corporations.<br />
THE DOL has sent their proposals to the white house office of Management and Budget and regulators<br />
want to get it finalized before the 2020 election so it will be harder to undo if a Democrat wins the white<br />
house. The proposed rule’s roll out has been frequently delayed since it was first released over two years<br />
ago and it will most likely have more delays and lawsuits along the way.<br />
A new rule like this would be the first update to federal overtime pay requirements in 15 years.<br />
Meanwhile, small businesses and employers in areas where the cost of living is already lower have<br />
complained that boosting overtime requirements will force them to cut jobs and hours to help meet<br />
payroll costs. Some lawyers are claiming that the DOL does not have the authority to enact such a ruling<br />
and claim it is a job killer.<br />
NYC Flagship Stores Closing<br />
FOR big brand retailers having their flagship store on Fifth Avenue or Madison Avenue in New York City<br />
was almost a requirement for them. Lately however so many things in retailing have been changing that<br />
several iconic retailers have been closing down their flagship stores. This certainly is not a promising sign<br />
for our industry when Lord and Taylor announces closing their New York location or most recently Tommy<br />
Hilfiger announcing the closing of theirs on Fifth Avenue.<br />
HILFIGER’S 22,000 square foot store is yet another loss to the famed Manhattan shopping street.<br />
And to make matters worse the brand also annunced that they will be closing its Collins Avenue Store in<br />
Miami as well. This is happening at a time when retailing is becoming more of an online experience than<br />
a physical shopping one. So maybe you want to believe from some of the other industry magazines that<br />
you need to “create instore experiences” to stay alive. Honestly we have more of a challenge coming than<br />
having a clown blowing up balloons at your store lobby is going to fix. When the deep-pocketed retailers<br />
like Hilfiger, Toys R Us, Ralph Lauren, Henri Bendel and others are having troubles it becomes increasingly<br />
obvious that many of us need to pivot more, and quickly into online marketing to our shoppers.<br />
NOW is the time to spruce up, promote and prepare your website, social media marketing!<br />

Owning and operating a store remains one of<br />
the best opportunities if you’re intent on going<br />
into business for yourself – just as it has been<br />

helped tame the land. They provided the pioneers<br />
access to the tools and goods that<br />
couldn’t be carried along on the western advance.<br />
And when the wilderness was conquered,<br />
there could be no surer sign of the<br />
victory than a street lined with shops addressing<br />
the needs and indulging the wants of a civil<br />
society. Success as a retailer then required a special<br />
combination of confidence, marketing and<br />
management skills, and gut instinct about what<br />
customers would buy. And that’s still what’s required.<br />
Today, the products available through retailers<br />
large and small help define our time and aspirations.<br />
As the heart of any city are the shops<br />
and stores that mirror its diversity and culture.<br />
The border between city and suburb is often<br />
lined with expansive malls and shopping centers<br />
– their stores serving as places to be as<br />
much as places to buy. In the country, any trip<br />
into town invariably becomes a trip to shop<br />
some local store. And where you find a faded<br />
downtown, it’s a sign the community’s vital establishments<br />
opted for another location, taking<br />
the crowds with them.<br />
An Essential Service<br />
Whatever the era, wherever situated, independent<br />
retailers provide an essential service to<br />
the community and its citizens. Your mission as<br />
a retailers, whether you’re selling from a flea<br />
market booth, a strip shopping center, or a dazzling<br />
storefront, is to provide the buying public<br />
access to goods and services. People will pay<br />
handsomely for that access. That’s fortunate<br />
since, as a retailers, you’ll make your living,<br />
and hopefully your fortune, off the difference<br />
between what you pay for goods and what you<br />
can sell them for.<br />
If you’re the type of person who can sense what<br />
that public wants, and you’re willing to assume<br />
the responsibility to find and deliver it, owning<br />
and operating a retail store will prove a rewarding<br />
and challenging profession. As the owner<br />
of a small store, you’ll be in charge of your career<br />
and your life. You’ll only answer to the<br />
man or woman in the mirror. If you long for<br />
that kind of self-determination, your own retail<br />

In the consumer marketplace, there’s always<br />

Let’s start at the beginning. Anyone who sells<br />
products to an end user is a retailer. That user,<br />
known as the customer, can be an individual, a<br />
group, or a business. What the retailer does is<br />
actually put the product in a customer’s hands.<br />
The transaction revolves around an exchange<br />
of money, or its paper or plastic equivalent, for<br />
goods. That’s a sale.<br />

While you may think of a retailer as a store<br />
owner, many other types of entrepreneurs can<br />
claim the label: the couple who spend their<br />
weekends at arts and crafts shows selling their<br />

finally receives the payment<br />
for the coat, it pays<br />
for everything related to<br />
manufacturing it: raw materials,<br />
factory equipment,<br />
shipping, employee salaries and benefits, advertising,<br />
transportation, etc. As it was for the<br />
dealer and distributor, anything left after expenses<br />
is profit.<br />
The actual retail cycle is obviously a bit more<br />
complicated, but that’s basically how it works.<br />
What happens at your store affects people<br />
around the country and world. When lots of<br />
women buy lots of coats, there’s lots of money<br />
moving around. The retailer can give his clerks<br />
a raise and start thinking about a redesign of<br />

As a retailer, your primary value to your suppliers<br />
is in creating a marketplace for their<br />
products. Without stores stocking and selling<br />
its products, a supplier would be forced to develop<br />

ways simply out of gratitude for products to<br />
sell. You’ll be demanding product and marketing<br />
support in return for carrying the supplier’s<br />
goods. The minimum: a quality product backed<br />
by a reasonable warranty or guarantee.<br />

Since inventory will tie up your money, you’ll<br />
look to your suppliers to share some of the financial<br />
burden. Some will, serving as both the<br />
source and financier of purchases. Suppliers<br />
may be a little wary of extending credit to the<br />
new shop in town, but once you demonstrate<br />
staying power, more favorable terms for payment<br />
can be negotiated.<br />
In fiercely competitive markets of high-priced<br />

This is called the profit margin, and is measured<br />
in points. Points are actually the percentage<br />
above what an item costs you that you’re<br />
able to sell it for.<br />
For instance, if you’re a specialty dealer and<br />
you buy a hat for five dollars and sell it for ten<br />
dollars, your margin is one hundred points.<br />
That translates into a 100% markup. If a discount<br />
store pays the same for a comparable hat<br />
and sells it for six dollars, the margin is twenty<br />
points. The volume-oriented discounter must<br />
now sell five hats to realize the same profit you<br />
saw from one.<br />
The immediate advantage is actually with the<br />
discounter. Most people shop price first. For<br />
them to spend more, you’ll need to offer the<br />
consumer some compelling reason to buy your<br />
hat. <strong>May</strong>be you’re the only one in town with a<br />
particular brand or style hat, or maybe you<br />
stock a broader selection of colors. Perhaps<br />
your hats are custom-fitted for customers.<br />
Before you can begin adding up your profits,<br />
you must settle accounts with everyone else<br />
your business depends on. The landlord, utilities,<br />
employees, advertising, etc. Then, what’s<br />
left is your profit.<br />

Where else, short of a bank loan, can you get<br />
the money? Certainly not from suppliers. Their<br />
main concern is selling you products so consumers<br />
will have a place to buy them. As long<br />
as they’re assured of sell-through at retail, they<br />
can keep their factories running.<br />
The Men & Women In The Middle<br />
Suppliers use a variety of strategies to sell to<br />
and service their retail network. The type of individual<br />
you deal with depends on the distribution<br />
system endorsed by that company.<br />
Some small companies sell direct to dealers<br />
from the factory, without any middle man.<br />
Most suppliers employ some form of sales staff<br />
for handling retail accounts. Anyone representing<br />
a supplier can be considered as a potentially<br />
valuable source of information about that<br />
company, its products, and trends in their industry.<br />
All salespeople get around. They have<br />
regular contact with a variety of retailers, and<br />
develop a good sense of what’s happening in<br />
the marketplace. Milk them for information,<br />
but closely scrutinize what salespeople tell you.<br />
Remember, their income depends on convincing<br />
you to stock what they sell.<br />

They visit stores on a regular<br />
