Kia ora and welcome,
Boy oh boy was the month of April busy or what, at the club!
I would like to firstly acknowledge the work and commitment of our staff, especially
around a hectic Easter weekend and secondly thank you, the members for your enthusiastic
support of the club!
Thank you to Holly and Daryl, from our boxing section for organising and running two very
successful boxing / kick boxing events in our sports hall during the early part of the month.
It is great to have these two key locally run events back at the club!
On the cards scene, I have learnt that one of our more senior members, Ethel has won the
New Zealand Cribbage Championship title, held recently in Wellington. This is her second
title in two years which I have been told is a remarkable feat!
Congratulations Ethel, this is a wonderful achievement.
Our two large Associate winter sports sections, Cash Tech football and Linwood rugby
league have kicked their respective seasons off. We wish them both well, and trust they
will enjoy their season and replicate their successes of last year. Cash Tech are trailing having
their after match functions in the community room at the sports pavilion, which we
hope will remove some of the pressure from around the main club area of a Saturday afternoon/evening.
Recently the Board set the date of Saturday the 29 th June for our clubs AGM.
As per our clubs rules, four Board members, being Colin, Neil, Leigh, Donna along with
myself, as President, are required to stand down. All however, are eligible for nomination
for re-election. Under the club rule structure, every year it provides an opportunity for any
member wishing to challenge for any vacancies to seek nomination. If becoming a Board
member has appeal and you’re unsure, then I am happy to have a chat to you about the
role.
Speaking of AGM’s, it is the time of the year that many sections within our club either have
or about to hold theirs. I personally would like to thank the many volunteers that make the
sections what they are. It can sometimes be a thankless task, however, from one that has
donated too many hours than I would care to count over more than 4 decades, it is I believe
an extremely satisfying way to give to others. Maybe it is time for you to consider
making a difference.
On that note, enjoy the beautiful colours as the tree’s lose their leaves, and as we head for
the darker days of winter, keep healthy, warm and well and remember, there is always
something on at your club for you to enjoy!
Regards , Ian.
Firstly to all our members, friends and family that visited us over Easter Weekend thank
you. We appreciate your support of the Club over what was a very busy period, I would also
like to acknowledge Amy, Steph and their teams who were on the front line for the variety of
activities and events that were held across both Easter and Anzac Day, well done.
There is plenty happening throughout May so I hope that you will find something to enjoy;
The “Amy and Adele” songbook performed by Bloom is here on Saturday 5 th . Live from Melbourne
pre-sale tickets are $35 or $40 on the door on the night. This show will be with us
from 7.30pm after a very successful tour of Clubs in the North Island.
The “Vague as Brothers” are back Saturday 18 th and always draw a good crowd so make sure
you are here early to get your seat.
Our annual “Pink Ribbon” quiz will be held on Wednesday 29 th . This has been a great event for
a really worthy cause that has been well supported by both members and teams from outside
the Club in previous years. Please put the date in your diary and get a team together to come
and help raise funds for breast cancer research and patient support.
The Super Rugby tipping competition is over the halfway mark and the current pace setters are
Val Willis and Robyn Philp both on 93 points with plenty of competition not far behind. Apart
from the Crusaders, picking the winners has seemed a bit of a lottery at times as this season it
looks like almost any team is capable of winning on the day. There is also a brewery promotion
in May for 2 double passes to the Crusaders v Blues match on May 25 th , drawn Saturday 18 th
you will need to be here to be in with a chance to win them.
With the Rugby World Cup just around the corner Spark have announced the cost of the package
for all games shown in commercial premises and it has turned out to be a very reasonable
price. We are currently working through what is required to show the games but we will have
this in place before the tournament so you will be able to watch the All Blacks and other
matches of interest here in your second lounge room.
Our first Wine Club date has been booked for Thursday 16 th June, details to follow. Church
Road wines are also running a” wine of the month” special in May where entries go into a
draw for a Nespresso coffee machine, which seems like a terrific prize which one of you lucky
members will win.
As the season changes we are also working on a new winter restaurant menu which will be
launched during the month. A selection of your favourites with some new dishes to tempt the
taste buds at a prices which we hope will give great value for money, watch this space! The
weekly food rituals have been refreshed with some great deals from Tuesday – Saturday, details
are included in the newsletter.
Have a great month and see you around the Club.
Regards, Tim.
CARDS SECTION:
Our cribbage team went to Porirua competing for the National Cribbage Trophy and
came back with great results.
Ethel Aranga won the National trophy for 2019, this is the second win of the Cribbage
Trophy for Ethel in three years an outstanding
achievement. The Sunday game “win” was jointly
won by Ethel Aranga and Edwin Marshall another
great achievement at the nationals from our team.
FISHING SECTION:
Well the fishing section have been on tour again.. back to Lake Brunner for another
challenge.
This time it was a multi clubs competition, all trying to win the coveted Jack Elcock trophy,
which is a Hornby Club event.15 boats, 45 adult anglers and 3 juniors all trying
their best from 5pm Friday afternoon until 4pm on the Saturday. Weigh-in at the
lovely Moana Hotel but we forgot about a Crusaders rugby game that had a 5.30 start.
Needless to say, the pub was packed, the beer and the noise were both doing well,
and the presentation headed outside for some hopefully relative quietness... except
when the Crusaders scored. After all the tallying up was done, time for the results, and
to our delight, Donna won the main trophy, the first lady to win it and even better that
Donna is one of ours.!!! Yay!! go the ladies. The juniors did well too.. we had 2 of them
and they finished 1st and 2nd.. not a bad effort as we did well in the spot prizes too.
Some interesting scenery was around just after Mother Nature had unleashed a torrent
of rain just the week before we got there. Travelling over was different with snow
flurries around Porters Pass and a lot of snow had been dumped along the main divide
in the few days prior to us travelling..
A quiet few weeks for us now but plotting and planning is underway for an assault on
the southern lakes in June. (Thermals are already being sorted)
Cribbage is becoming a more popular
game amongst our members. The section
committee have introduced cribbage on
Tuesday “card night” assuming enough
players are available on the night. This is
an opportunity for new and old members
to learn from the best.
Thanks, Karen
New members are most welcome to come along on Tuesday night at 7pm to play Euchre.
GARDEN SECTION:
May, there is a hint that winter is apparent as plant growth for most plants slows down.
April - Diana Madgin gave an interesting talk on the early years and how
Christchurch became the Garden City and spoke on the red Zone.
The Steinlager Euchre Tournament, played at Papanui Club. Papanui club were excellent
hosts. Peter and Jan Logan were placed 4 th in the pairs and Woolston Club
placed 3 rd in the team event another great result for the card section.
Interclub games start in May, if you enjoy playing euchre or cribbage here is a wonderful
opportunity to meet other affiliated club members and enjoy a great Saturday
out. Note, you need to be a member of the card section to participate.
The card section AGM held in February voted in a new president and secretary upon
the retirement of Peter and Jan Logan. Under their stewardship the card section
blossomed and grew, winning multiple interclub, national and special tournaments
during their reign. Peter and Jan were always there to organize and run section
events, no amount of thanks can show the card sections appreciation.
compost and Lime. Plant Broad Beans and garlic.
