three -fold
issue
Finite supply, infrastructure,
consumption the problems
ROB KNOWLES
Water has been an
issue in Ndlambe
for a long time, and
independent water
consultant for the municipality,
Justin Wilmot, explained the
problems associated with
supplying water to the area at
the combined Port Alfred
Business Forum and Sunshine
Coast Tourism meeting that
took place at the Royal Port
Alfred Golf Club last Thursday.
Wilmot gave the worst-case
scenario if residents did not
restrict their water
consumption, but also pointed
out economical ways that the
current situation could be
rectified – solutions he has
presented to Ndlambe
Municipality, Amatola Water
and other parties.
“When it comes to water
there are really only three
issues; supply – including
quality, delivery/infrastructure
and consumption,” Wilmot told
an audience of about 60
people.
The flow of the Kowie River
to the Ndlambe area begins in
Makhanda (Grahamstown), and
then makes a long trip through
a number of weirs and dams
before it reaches Waters
Meeting, where the Sarel
Hayward Dam is located as a
storage facility.
Water is pumped to the
balancing dam (that holds
around 65 mega litres).
At this point there are two
My challenge for you is
to save 25% of your
current water bill. It’s
up to us
the water flowing down from
the Belmont, it still needs to fill
every single weir and dam in
its path before it gets to the
weir at the very top of the
Kowie River.
When there is excess it gets
pumped back to the Sarel
Hayward Dam, while the bulk
is pumped to Port Alfred
through an asbestos cement
pipe.
“[Last year] saw drought,
infrastructure challenges and
power outages [all] eroding
our backup supplies,” W i l m ot
said.
“At capacity, the balancing
dam can hold about 15 days of
wat e r.
“Breakdowns have been
happening for years, but we no
longer have a buffer, so feel
every one of them.”
When there was a
breakdown it was often
necessary to switch the entire
system down as, Wilmot
explained, there was no way to
isolate specific areas.
choices; excess water is kept
and stored in the balancing
dam where it settles before
being pumped to the treatment
works and into the reticulation
system, or, when there is a
shortage, the balancing dam is
bypassed and the water flows
straight to the treatment works
in Nemato.
Generators or inverters explained
at Port Alfred Business Forum
ROB KNOWLES
Simon Thesen of Thesens
Generators gave a talk
at last Wednesday’s
Port Alfred Business Forum
meeting, explaining power
generation issues and how
to resolve them to suit your
budget as well as electrical
requirements.
Thesen was asked to
speak as many residents in
the Ndlambe area are
looking for independence
from Eskom.
He said there were four
Thesen empowers residents with power generation talk
main components of a
generator system that
needed to be considered
when purchasing, including
the engine (petrol or diesel),
the alternator (that
generates the electricity),
the distribution to
appliances and the
switch-over from Eskom to
generator power.
“Some agents use good
engines but substitute the
other components for
cheaper alternatives,” said
Thesen. “However, when you
go to maintain these items
they could be out of stock
and unavailable.”
His recommendation was
therefore to choose the
correct generator and its
component parts as this will
save money in the
longer-term. He also spoke
of the differences between
generators and inverters,
and the advantages of either
s y st e m .
“Generators can be quite
noisy in operation,” he said,
“and most require
intervention to switch them
on when the power is cut
of f. ”
Thesen explained that the
life cycle of an inverter
system depends on battery
life and how many
appliances can be used, as
battery replacement can be
a major cost should they not
be able to slowly charge
because of continuous use,
as occurs when Stage 2 or
higher load-shedding is
implemented (more than
one Eskom power-cut in a
d ay ) .
He said the fast recharging
will cause damage to the
battery banks which are very
expensive to replace.
However, one advantage of
an inverter system is that
the power will swap over
very rapidly.
“Your DStv decoder won’t
even reboot with an inverter
s y st e m , ” Thesen said.
“Some people don’t want
to have to get up to switch
the generator on, so an
inverter will switch over
without any intervention.”
PROVIDING ANSWERS: Presenters at the Port Alfred Business Forum and Sunshine Coast Tourism meeting last Thursday evening, from left, Justin Wilmot spoke of the problems Ndlambe is
experiencing with regard to water issues and Simon Thesen, with business partner John Johnson, gave advice on the installation of electrical generators and inverters
Water: Bleak Christmas can be avoided
From page 1
Now that there are
new valves at the
Royal Alfred Marina it
is possible to isolate
certain areas.
High-lying areas are
the first to be affected.
He said when the
water was switched
back on, the water
hammer effect could
break pipe joints and
even burst pipes.
Valves require air
release valves that
would allow trapped
air to escape from the
system – the only
other way to release
the air was by turning
on the fire hydrants.
Wilmot said Kentonon-Sea
relied
exclusively on Eskom
to provide electricity
for its reverse osmosis
system, as it did n ot
have an equivalent of
the Sarel Hayward
Dam.
Water is drawn from
sea-wells and mixed
with dune-well water.
At the end of
October 2018, a
meeting was called
between Amatola
Water, Ndlambe
Municipality, the
Kenton-on-Sea
R at e p ay e r s
Aassociation (Kosra),
tourism and business
to explain the
challenges residents
faced. A few rules
were established at
the meeting, the main
being that all
information should be
made completely
transparent, good or
bad, and a WhatsApp
group was established
to aid information flow.
With a full reservoir,
Kenton only has two
days of water in
reser ve.
supply of water, we
have some
infrast ructural
problems and there is
excessive
consumption.
“As long as
G r a h a m st o w n
[Makhanda] has a
problem, we have a
problem.”
The Sarel Hayward
Dam holds about a
year’s reserve but,
when it is not being
replenished, the water
at the bottom of the
dam that contains all
the “good stuff” gets
pumped directly to the
water treatment works
and is the reason for
the smelly water.
The recently
released Amegwevu
report for Bathurst
(which is probably
going to be rolled out
throughout the Eastern
Cape) had several
“options” for water
reticulation and bulk
water supply, but
should be treated
carefully as the wrong
decision could cost
residents dearly in the
future, Wilmot said.
He explained several
of the options in the
report – all had some
disadvantages as well
as advantages.
He suggested a
non-political
committee needed to
be established to look
into the matter
including former and
retired experts in the
field.
Wilmot said t ot a l
buy-in from the
community was also
required.
If the process was to
be transparent, then
people would also
need to be more
forgiving of mistakes
made either in the
past or the present.
Wilmot said there
were short- (Christmas
2019), medium-
(Christmas 2020) and
long-term solutions
required.
Another solution
was for people to
install more storage
tanks to reduce
dependence on the
s y st e m .
He said if Port Alfred
residents collectively
could save just
500,000l per day (less
than 10% of Port
Alfred’s daily
consumption) it could
be redirected to the
balancing dam (which
is currently being
cleaned in
preparation), the filling
of which would take
130 days to achieve.
When this is full,
excess water will
bypass the balancing
dam and be pumped
directly to the Sarel
Hayward dam.
“If we start in May,
the balancing dam will
be full by spring.
“This will give us 15
days backup. If not, we
will have a bleak
C h r i st m a s .
“My challenge for
you is to save 25% of
your current water bill.
It’s up to us.”

to introduce a new
weapon in their
ongoing fight for the
environment in the
the STOP Plastic
campaign mascot.
Zisa will be present
at the Kids’ Challenge
on May 1 and the
at Pollok Beach on
May 4 to remind all
competitors about the
damage plastic
pollution is causing in
the world.
SPAR EC
sponsorships and
events manager Alan
Stapleton said this
was a wonderful
opportunity to
maintain awareness
about the campaign in
a fun way.
“This will be the first
chance to introduce
Zisa to the people of
Nelson Mandela Bay,”
he said.
“Zisa will also be at
the Kids’ Challenge
and will be bringing
some surprise friends
for all the children
taking part to meet.”
The campaign got
under way a year ago
and besides the
awareness created by
figures such as SPAR
EC STOP Plastic
ambassador Sarah
Ferguson, the
immediate impact was
felt with 3-million
fewer plastic bags
being sold in the last
few months of 2018.
Now, said Stapleton,
they wanted to
continue educating
the public about their
efforts and to
encourage all to join
in the fight.
“We have various
plans in place to keep
the Women’s
Challenge a litter-free
event,” he said.
“But more
importantly we want
to change mindsets
about how we use and
re-use plastic. Yes, we
have a plastic problem
but it is caused by a
people problem and
we just want to
remind people of the
role they can play.”
He said that Stop
Plastic bins would
“lit tered” all around
the course and at the
start and finish area.
There will also be
some new recycling
bin stations.
“There will be more
than enough bins on
the route for runners
to throw their sachets
away, ” Stapleton said.
“We also want to
remind people that
there is an EP
Athletics Association
rule that runners can
be disqualified for
littering on the route.”
For our latest Facebook question,
business.
Etienne Harris said: “On a
lighter note... trading my car for a
Hazel Schreiber replied saying,
“You will be able to get rid of the
Etienne Harris engaged further,
saying: “Runs on kikuyu and
comes with an umbrella to keep
that relentless African sun off
your back and the rain at bay.”
Yvonne MacKenzie Botha also
Margaret Norton Weller said:
“Just a few days before the
Theo Kemp replied saying, “They
are so besotted with the ANC it
will make no difference. I hope
I’m proved wrong. Meanwhile, I
think we are all worse off since
1994.”
Martin Neethling said: “Use Port
Jacobus Reinier Grové said: “I
Jenni Nicholabest said: “Don’t
every time.”
Jessica Lee Brown replied
saying, “It’s not an excuse, it’s
reality. When petrol goes up,
transport cost goes up and prices
go up. Transport costs are worked
into prices and it’s bound to go
Leslie Cusens said: “Business
Henri Steppe said: “It will affect
everybody. Because of the fuel
price increase, everything gets
Jo Styles Worthington-Smith
said: “We have a strict budget, so
If you are a property owner in Ndlambe, the
deadline for objecting against the
valuation assigned to your property is
tomorrow (Friday), so if you are unhappy and
have not formally objected, time is fast
running out.
As the Port Alfred Residents and
Ratepayers Association (Parra) informed
readers in Talk of the Town a month ago, the
general valuation of properties in Ndlambe
was completed some time ago and the roll
was made available for inspection and
objection.
Each municipal account holder should also
have received a notice of their new valuation
with their March municipal account.
Parra chairman Dawie van Wyk said he
was satisfied that valuations had been
performed using recognised valuation
methods with the comparative sales method
being used predominantly where possible.
This would have included all residential
properties and vacant land.
Many attributes are used to compare the
various properties to each other, including
land size, size and condition of
improvements, location, view, street appeal.
Obviously not all properties were
inspected, but apparently a comprehensive
set of street view photographs were taken by
the valuers. These together with aerial
photographs and municipal data were used
to generate values for each property.
Commercial properties are valued by
capitalising the expected incomes based on
information provided to the valuers by
various owners and property managers.
These incomes were capitalised using the
yield expected by investors.
Talk of the Town became aware of
irregularities in valuations in some areas.
One resident told TotT that some property
values in Francolin Road had gone up by
27% while prime beachfront properties in
West Beach Drive had gone down in value by
20%.
She rightly pointed out this was a huge
discrepancy and appeared to be irrespective
of the size of house/erf or number of
bathrooms or sea views or beachfront
access. Values appeared to be assigned
willy-nilly for entire streets and areas. But
not all houses in these areas are of the same
worth and size.
Van Wyk said that in the Ndlambe
Ratepayers Forum’s discussions with the
valuation service provider and Ndlambe
municipal officials, they acknowledged some
calculation errors in the West Beach Drive,
Greenmantle Drive and Francolin Road areas
and that these were being addressed by the
valuators and the municipality.
But this week, the municipality reverted to
the refrain that “all unhappy consumers
must object against a valuation they are in
disagreement with”.
Van Wyk warned that “the mistake was
made by the valuators and thus they/the
municipality must inform all those who have
incorrect values and how the values are
going to be corrected.
“The municipality is opening itself up for
litigation as they have knowingly accepted
incorrectly calculated values.”
In the article on page 12 of TotT
I am incorrectly quoted in the
Disabled parking: vote ‘No’ or ‘Go’
I request a public response after
being threatened with legal action
after intimating that “i d i ot s ” are
occupying disabled parking spots.
Remember – I have a disabled
nephew who often has to be dropped
off at the entrance of malls, etc and
his parents must drive and park
elsewhere – despite having a
disabled sticker.
I have been publishing pictures for
a year with only support and praise
... until now.
Three questions – yes or no:
1. Are you displaying a disabled
st i c ke r ?
2. If “no”, did you know you were
breaking the law when you parked
there? (If no to both then a genius
will not describe you).
3. If you have seen the other
pictures I posted in TotT and have not
responded, then the law of passive
acceptance applies.
Please send any short message to
TotT showing agreement or
disagreement with my pictures.
Port Alfred, please act with either
“Go Doug” or “No Doug”.
I trust TotT will support me (as
much as friends and acquaintances
have) in my quest to preserve morals
and respect in our town.
Comments like “it’s after hours”, “I
have a limp”, “look at my bandage”
do NOT count as a disabled sticker.
Lucus Majozi
DCM – truly a
worthy hero
Lucus Majozi, a Zulu, displayed great bravery at
the battle of El Alamein on October 23 1942, for
which he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct
Medal, the highest British award for gallantry, after
the Victoria Cross.
Serving as a black soldier in the South African
Army he was not allowed to engage in direct
combat with the enemy nor carry weapons, and
served as a stretcher bearer.
During the long battle of El Alamein the Allies
were attacking enemy forces and the South
Africans needed to get through a minefield
peppered with more than 500,000 mines.
The battalion, commanded by General Dan
Pienaar, forced their way through, under heavy
machine gun and artillery fire from the enemy,
commanded by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel
Majozi accompanied his company into action
and, although under heavy fire, thought nothing of
his personal safety, continuing to evacuate
casualties, assisted by co-bearers.
Wounded by shrapnel and a number of bullets,
he continued alone through the night to evacuate,
often carrying men on his back to aid stations,
finally collapsing the next morning.
Through his extreme devotion to duty and
gallant conduct, he saved the lives of many
wounded who would otherwise have died of loss of
blood and further wounds.
His commander, Major-General Dan Pienaar, said
of him: “This soldier did most magnificent and
brave things with a number of bullets in his body,
he returned time after time into a veritable hell of
machine gun fire to pull out wounded men. He is a
man of whom SA can well be proud. He is a credit
to his country.”
Lucus Majozi DCM died in 1969 in Zastron.
Historian Susan Erasmus said: “In honouring
these soldiers, we honour life, what we have now,
and pay some tribute to the society in which we
would like to live and in which they never would.
We will remember them and we should ...”
Q: What do you do to unwind
A: Seek out other opportunities to
Q: What is your motto in life?
Q: What makes you happy?
A: Accomplishing a set goal.
Q: What makes you angry?
A: The phrase “I forgot”.
Q: What do you think about the
youth of South Africa? Do you
have any advice for them?
A: Consider the consequences of
Have faith in dark times of your life
One of the fundamental
and basic requirements
of Christianity is faith.
Its absolute necessity
is revealed in Hebrews
11:6, which says, “And
without faith it is
impossible to please
God, because anyone
who comes to him must
believe that he exists
and that he rewards
those who earnestly
seek him.”
Grace is the door to
salvation and to all the
promises of God, but it
is faith that unlocks the
door. To substantiate
this statement, let me
quote Hebrews 4:2.
It says, “For we also
have had the gospel
preached to us, just as
they did; but the
message they heard
was of no value to
them, because those
who heard did not
combine it with faith.”
The Lord Jesus has
done everything
necessary for mankind
to be saved, but if the
gospel message is not
applied to one’s own
life by faith, it is of no
benefit to them!
“Whoever believes in
the Son has eternal life,
but whoever rejects the
Son will not see life, for
God’s wrath remains on
him” (John 3:36).
Faith in God is not for
salvation only, for
the choices you make. And only if
you are willing to and know you can
handle what would come back to
you, yourself; then only take action.
Otherwise don’t blame anyone else
for your misfortunes in life.
Q: If you could change one thing
about the Port Alfred…
A: The narrow-mindedness.
Q: What do you like most about
Port Alfred?
A: The town’s general splendour,
the warm and welcoming hospitality
of its residents and beautiful natural
surroundings.
Q: What is your favourite music of
all time?
A: Prefer my own thoughts in
silence.
Q: Name three people you would
like to invite for dinner (dead or
a l i v e) .
A: Cicilia Pieterse, and quality
over quantity.
Q: Three wishes for South Africa.
A: I don’t believe in wishes. The
country is exactly where it should be
as a result of choices made by its
residents.
I N S P I R AT I O N A L
INSIGHTS
... with Pastor Theo Snyman
Christianity is trusting
in the Lord through
thick and thin. It is
through the darkest
hours of life that our
faith is truly tested. It is
so easy to doubt God’s
grace when our prayers
are not immediately
answered. Remember
that grace is the door
but faith is the key.
The apostles asked,
“Increase our faith”
(Luke 17:5) while
another man cried out,
“I do believe; help me
overcome my unbelief”
(Mark 9:24)! All we
need is faith like a
mustard seed – n ot
faith in our faith, but
faith in an Almighty
loving and gracious
Heavenly Father.
“When the Son of
Man comes, will he find
faith on the earth?”

‘Illogical’ entertainment at one-man show
JON HOUZET
Rob Knowles held his first “One-Man Show,
with Guests” at Harry B’s last Saturday night,
which was also a fundraiser for the Rotary
Club of Port Alfred.
Knowles is familiar to many locals who have
seen him perform his music mixed with comedy
act before. He has performed a number of times
with Flame Metter, more recently with Scott
Harvey, and in earlier days with Roland Gaspar at
the erstwhile Barmuda.
Although an old hand at performing, this was
the first time Knowles took the reins in terms of
arranging and producing a show, roping in friends
Claude Samuel and Kathleen MacDonald.
He started with a Gordon Lightfoot classic, If You
Could Read My Mind, which was well-suited to
Knowles’ baritone voice. He then launched into
some comedy, describing it as “a hodge-podge of
my life” and warning the audience that were was
“no chronological order or even logical order to
the show”.
MacDonald came on stage for a duet with
Knowles, Stumblin’ In, made famous by Suzi
Quatro and Chris Norman of Smokie.
Singing to backing tracks, MacDonald, who has
a very pleasant voice , continued solo with Help
Me Make it Through the Night and Don’t it Make
My Brown Eyes Blue.
Then Knowles was back on stage for more
comedy, after which Samuel, playing guitar and in
a drum seat providing his own percussion, did an
unusual and appealing cover of Blueberry Hill with
raspy vocals.
He continued with The Animals’ House of the
Rising Sun, and a marvellous instrumental where
he began with slide guitar on his lap then
transitioned to playing upright.
While people waited for the delicious meals
prepared by Crystal Carelse at Harry B’s, Knowles
played some gentle background music, including
Moonshadow, Leaving on a Jet Plane and
Sandman.
After supper, Samuel returned with another
instrumental and a song he wrote himself. He used
a special vocal effects mic to sing By My Side.
Knowles joined Samuel for a duet on Sweet
Caroline, made unintentionally comedic by them
losing track of the lyrics.
MacDonald came back on for These Boots Are
Made for Walkin’, Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain and
Ve n u s , which was a hit both for Shocking Blue and
Bananarama.
Samuel closed out the show. It was a laid-back,
enjoyable evening among friends.
Talk of the Town 11
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
HAPPY Workers Day for yesterday. Perhaps
it’s just me but, there seems to be a lot of
public holidays happening overthis period.
After a very rainy end to April the
predictions for this weekend are above
25°C and there is only a slight chance of
rain. Let’s hope the country can cope with
the over-abundance of holidays and that
the final two-thirds of 2019 will be more
productive.
WELL, another Royal St Andrews Hotel
Amanzi Challenge is done and dusted for
the year, and the visitors who accompanied
the participants, plus those who came for
the Easter holidays but stayed for the
excitement of bodyboarding, surfing, beach
handball and the rubber duck inflatable
boat races have now mostly packed up and
returned to their homes. First, we thank all
the visitors who travelled to Port Alfred
(despite the Sanral roadworks along the
R72) and hope you had a great experience
while hoping to see you again over the
Christmas holidays. With the Bathurst
Show having taken place earlier in April
and then the RSAH Amanzi Challenge,
there was certainly a great deal of
excitement in the month of April. Well done
to all those who beat their competition and
commiseration to those that didn’t quite
make it. We hope to see you all again at
the next event. Well done to the
organisers, BS Sports CEO Zwelimzima
Nkwinti and the sub-organisers from the
various disciplines for all their hard work.
THE Bathurst Book Fair, held in Bathurst
last Sunday, was another huge success
with local authors and poets exhibiting
their published works and the hundreds of
people who attended the event. There is so
much talent in our area with regard to
writers, historians and poets (not even
taking into account musicians, visual
artists and many more talents besides)
and a lot tend to congregate in Bathurst. I
would suggest it might be something in
the water, but there is usually not that
much water in Bathurst.
TO D AY the PA Art Club IS holding its
monthly meeting at the Don Powis Hall at
Settlers Park and then this afternoon the
Forum for Astronomy, Science and
Technology (Fast) group has Dr Steve
DIARISE THIS
LOVING COUPLE: Javan Eaton, owner of JE Cartage, and Nadine Eaton, clerk at Charteris and Barnes, Port Alfred were
married on March 30 and we wish them all the best to the two of you for the future
Gregory giving a talk on cancer research at
the Royal Alfred Marina Clubhouse. On to
the weekend, Saturday sees the Christian
Men’s Association meeting for its monthly
breakfast at Tash’s Craft Bar where retired
construction contractor and MP Clement
Abrahams will be giving the talk. On
Sunday, it’s another Classics at the Castle,
this time with Quintessence, an ensemble
of piano, clarinet, French horn and cello.
the Kowie, see the Diarise This section,
OUR heartiest congratulations to George
and Zelda Petzer and also big brother
Rueben on the arrival of their beautiful
baby girl Anya Elizabeth. We know she will
bring heaps of joy and happiness to the
entire family.
BUSINESS anniversary congratulations
followed by good wishes for continued
success go to the following businesses and
organisations, especially Pam Golding
Boknes, Kenton Standard Bank, Oxygen
Fitness (Rosehill Mall), Buco (PA), and
certainly not forgetting the AA which was
founded in Port Alfred in 1961, and which
has been a godsend for many folk and
their families since then and still going
st rong.
THE most worrying thing that has
happened recently is the increase in the
price of petrol on Tuesday midnight when
fuel prices increased by 54c per litre but
diesel only saw a marginal increase of 1c
per litre. How South Africans are supposed
to absorb these increases and still function
is a real mystery and, although
government is not responsible for
increased fuel prices internationally (Brent
Crude oil prices are not under South
African control), passing these increases
on has made fuel almost inaccessible for
many people. And, of course, the national
elections and all the politicking that goes
with them mean that less time is spent by
politicians on subsidies, challenges and
other ways to stabilise the rand. At the
time of going to press (Tuesday) and with
last year’s figures in brackets to compare
against), the rand was trading at R14.34 to
the dollar (R13.38), R18.54 to the pound
(R17.25) and R16.00 to the euro (R14.60).
Commodities such as gold were trading at
$1,280.47 per fine ounce ($1,258.24),
platinum at $900.40 per fine ounce
($929.50) with price of Brent Crude Oil at
$71.79 per barrel ($50.90).
SPECIAL thoughts and prayers are with all
those folk who are not well, having or have
already had tests, operations and
treatments. ‘Sterkte’ to Roy Potter, Andrew
de Vries, Jenny Groenewald, Chris de Wet
Steyn, Marian Eaten, Martin Bekker, Trish
Solz, Brenda Shelton and Theo Snyman.
WEDDING anniversary congratulations with
best wishes for many more years of
happiness ahead for all couples having an
anniversary, especially Michael and Moira
Schnehage, Ivor and Lesley-Ann Phillips,
Paul and Gillian Lacey.
Congratulations to angler Taylor Bowdler
on making the international team to
represent SA Juniors next year.
THOUGHT for the week: “A man travels
the world over in search of what he
needs and returns home to find it.”
After West’s 1H bid, North must decide whether to bid 1S or 2S? Most players
will see the 6 card suit with 9 points and bid 2S automatically, but this is
À
of clubs and a singleton heart. If you play weak jump overcalls, you must distinguish between weak
and strong hands because the auction is competitive and you must give an accurate assessment
to partner, or he/she won’t know how far to compete. Over South’s 3S neither West nor East has
enough strength to bid again, bearing in mind the vulnerability; so you would expect 3S to be the
5 out of 6 pairs pushed on to 4H (which South with two Aces after an overcall from North might
4S). In the Red section all the contracts were in spades.
COUSINS ON THE KOWIE: Cousins Elandre Human of Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Rikus Human of Port Elizabeth piloting their craft at speed on the Kowie River at Port Alfred during the Thunder Cat
inflatable boat racing series that formed part of the Royal St Andrew's Hotel Amanzi Challenge. The team enjoyed mixed fortunes over the weekend, due mainly to mechanical issues Picture: SUPPLIED
THE DAY THE PRESIDENT CAME TO TOWN
Had President Cyril Ramaphosa deviated
just slightly from his pre-arranged route
when he visited Makhanda (Grahamstown)
last Saturday, he would have had a glimpse
of the real Makhanda, not the hastily
fixed-up streets along said pre-arranged
route, as well as at the Miki Yili Stadium
where he delivered his Freedom Day
message.
There had been frantic activity in the days
leading up to the President’s visit, with
municipal crews out in force filling in
potholes, cutting grass on verges and in the
stadium, removing rubbish from the streets
along the route, and repairing stadium
structures and walls.
Residents complained bitterly about the
waste of money in sending jets from
Limpopo Province, as well as bringing the
Silver Falcons aerobatics team from the
West Coast for flypasts and a six-minute air
d i s p l ay.
Also appreciated by the crowd in the
stadium and those gathered in surrounding
neighbourhoods was the flypast by two
helicopters.
When the action in the sky was over, the
aircraft disappeared into the distant clouds,
and the speeches began.
Besides the massive presence of
residents who flocked to Miki Yili Stadium
to see and hear the President, there was a
string of high-ranking and smartly-attired
military officers from the navy, army and air
force, many of them with medals pinned to
their chests.
FESTIVAL OPTIMISM
In his latest newsletter to prospective
National Arts Festival visitors from across
SA and indeed the world, CEO Tony
Lankester was upbeat about ‘Fest 45’.
He said: “A few weeks ago I wrote to you
to let you know how we were progressing
on the water issues our city is facing, and
I’m happy to confirm that all is still on track
and we’re confident that we will achieve our
aim of making sure you’re safe and
comfortable when you visit us.”
Lankester continued by conceding that
Makhanda (Grahamstown) had some big
challenges ahead of it, but that issues of
service delivery were receiving the attention
they deserved.
Lankester concluded his message by
saying: “Meanwhile, we’re seeing an
amazing ‘all hands on deck” attitude from
our 70,000 residents as we work together to
make sure we’re ready for the festival
influx.”
REACH FOR THE SKY
Makhanda (Grahamstown) residents were
treated to some thrilling antics above the
city on Saturday during the visit by
President Cyril Ramaphosa or, as one local
put it, “shenanigans in the sky”.
While security staff were keeping a
watchful eye on the President and his
surroundings wherever he went, members
of the South African Air Force (SAAF) were
‘doing their thing’ in the blue sky on a
bright and sunny day.
Somebody in the know told me a dozen
aircraft had been despatched to Makhanda
for the occasion – these included Gripen
and Hawk Mk 120 fighter jets, Lynx and
BK117 helicopters, as well as the Silver
Falcons aerobatics team in Pilatus training
aircraf t.
The jets flew in from as far north as Air
Force Base Makhado in northern Limpopo,
while the Silver Falcons came from Air Force
Base Langebaanweg on the West Coast. The
aircraft and crews slept over in Port
Elizabeth on Friday night and flew to the
Makhanda action on Saturday morning.
Of course, I was most interested and
excited, seeing and hearing all those aircraft
suppose.
My childhood and teenage years were
spent living on the southern edge of the
Cape Town suburb of Milnerton, just 300m
from the end of the runway of Air Force
Base Ysterplaat.
I remember, quite clearly, a massive air
show hosted by Ysterplaat in the early
1960s, which even saw aircraft being
brought in from Pretoria and other bases.
The base was opened to the public that
Saturday, and it seemed the whole of Cape
Town was at Ysterplaat checking out the
aircraft and the hangars, and watching the
myriad air displays.
GOOD TIMES IN THE GARDENS
Teenager Cee-Jay Porthen is something of a
‘veteran’ as far as parkrun is concerned, and
on Saturday he completed his 137th parkrun
in Makana botanical gardens, not bad for so
young a runner.
But that’s not all – Porthen also recorded
a personal best time on the day when there
were 134 participants.
First three finishers were Thoko Sipungu
(20 minutes 27 seconds), Cee-Jay Porthen
(20 mins 49 secs) and Sylvester Jeffries (21
mins 51 secs). First three ladies were
Shimone Prince (28 mins 06 secs), Tosca
Stoloff (29 mins 03 secs) and Jeanne du
Toit (29 mins 52 secs, personal best).
Parkrunners who are approaching
personal milestones are: Cee-Jay Porthen
(13 to go to 150), Ingrid Ford (6 to go to
100), Hilton Adonis (9 to go to 100), Desiree
Philipson (8 to go to 100), Val Varela (5 to
go to 50) and Pearl Chuma Harwood (6 to
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
A Grahamstown Building Society (now GBS
Mutual Bank) advertisement in a local
publication of 1981 caught my eye the other
d ay.
Not only were father and son KEM Stone
(Kyle) and CKM Stone (Chris) chairman and
vice-chairman respectively of the then GBS
board of directors, they were also senior
partners of well-known local law firm, Dold
& Stone Attorneys.
Other directors on the GBS board back
then were PG Mansfield, LJ Denison-Clark
and DR Butler, while the general manager
was JVB (Joe) Keeton.
WATERY ISSUES
With water apparently the main topic of
discussion in Makhanda (Grahamstown)
these days, I thought this snippet might be
a p p r o p r i at e .
Some years ago I acquired a photocopy of
the “Plan of the City of Grahamstown”. This
street map is very old – as in ancient - and
over the next few weeks I’ll be taking a look
at its contents and sharing them with you, if
you don’t mind, that is.
Almost immediately I noticed the three
dams on the south-western fringes of the
city, called reservoirs on the map. There was
Hamilton Reservoir on the western side of
Gunfire Hill (as we know it today), Douglas
Reservoir (commonly known as Dog’s Dam
these days) and Grey Reservoir (at the foot
of Mountain Drive).
So, you may well exclaim, we know all
about them.
I’m pretty sure, however, you did not
know about Hope Reservoir which was
situated on the southern side of Hillsview
Road (as it is called today) just off the bend
a couple of hundred metres past Darling
St reet.
Another local history lesson next week!
ALL AT HOME
Whether you are a supporter of Graeme
College, Kingswood College or St Andrew’s
College, May 11 is a date to diarise.
On that day, Graeme’s senior and junior
rugby teams will be at home to St Andrew’s
(College and Prep), while Kingswood’s
senior teams will host Daniel Pienaar
Technical High from Uitenhage.
PRET TY
According to an advertisement in a local
publication in 1995, Fleur Petite Florist
stocked “flowers of quality for all
occasions”. No doubt the flowers were
pretty, as was the pretty-sounding name of
the business which was owned by Marlene
Thompson.
Sensei
proud of
his students
Karate kids do well at EP trials
ROB KNOWLES
It was with pride that sensei Clive
Naido came away from the
recently held Eastern Province
Goju Kai Karate Trials held at
Fairview in Port Elizabeth.
The provincial team is still to be
selected but Naido is expecting
good things from his students.
“Some of these kids were
attending their first tournament,
and they did very well, with gold
and silver medals,” he said.
Naido takes children from some
of the poorest families and trains
them for free.
“My family was poor and my
sensei did not charge for my
lessons when I was growing up,
so this is my way of paying it
forward, to help other kids from
poorer families to learn the
spor t,” he said.
“If they are able to win at
provincials they will be eligible to
compete in the world
championships, to be held in
Japan in 2021,” Naido said.
“Special thanks must go to
some of our benefactors including
Johannes Jordaan, Jane Cowley,
Sandra Fryer, along with others
for their continued support.”
PROUD DISPLAY: The kids at the Station Hill dojo under the tutelage of sensei Clive Naido proudly show the medals they won
at the recently-held Eastern Province Goju Kai Karate Trials held in Port Elizabeth. From left, back row, are Naido, Tazmin Cannon
(gold in kata and silver in kumite), Ophelia Swartz (silver in kumite), Andy Swartz (silver in Kumite), Shante Hilpert (gold in
kumite) with, front row, Dante Hilpert (silver in kumite), Shaylee Hilpert-Swartz (gold in kumite) and Cecilia Majuza (bronze in
Kenton Bowling Club
Not a lot of bowls played due to the wonderful and very
welcome rains this last week but the greens have
flourished in the rain, our irrigation tanks are all full and
we are well set for the winter. The Rascal should be well
pleased with the state of affairs when he returns from
his travels.
A good time to report on the club Men’s Pairs
competition and a clash of the giants with Bill Bedford,
Ted Birch, Ken Nixon and Gerald Roxburgh combining
for a healthy average age of eighty four years. After a
titanic struggle, youngster Ken and his lead Roxie
pipped the more experienced Bill and Ted by a slender
17-16 margin, well done gents and many more years of
good bowling.
Last Friday’s Personal Trust trips went ahead despite
the rains and another short downpour in the morning,
again a tribute to the great condition of our greens and
the efforts of our apprentice green keeper Westy and
Co. The popularity of this monthly event was very
evident as a combination of cabin fever and a lack of
bowls drew another great turnout.
Patricia Greig, Kevin Bates and Dave Wallace were
our winners, with Rina Maree, Roxie Roxburgh and
Stoffel Scheepers just one point behind in second place.
Well done Patrica and team and thank you again to our
sponsors Personal Trust.
What a wonderful turnout on Friday evening for the
monthly braai and weekly draws, the bowling club is
fast becoming the place to be in Kenton on Fridays.
Cecily Massart was a very popular winner of the
Attendance draw but Jerry “J o ke r ” Catto was
confounded by the real joker and missed the chance of
claiming the bumper jackpot. Thank you Stompie and
Mike, you guys did a sterling job behind the bar.
Not a great return for our Kenton teams in the
Colleen Timm and Moore Shield competitions at Kowie
on Saturday with both our men and ladies struggling on
the day and failing to trouble the scorers in either
competition.
A lovely story from the Eastern Areas (EA) pairs finals
on Saturday though, where Ruth Low and “Maybe not so
young” Ken Nixon lost a seesaw encounter in their
section to Pieter and Margaret Stegman from Kowie.
Having played in the trips the day before, young Ken
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
arrived to play with only three bowls in his bag but was
very kindly helped by Pieter who scurried around the
bowels of the Kowie clubhouse to find him a full set of
bowls to play with. After being well down at the halfway
stage, Ken and Ruth staged a great comeback to lead
by one shot with one end to play but Pieter and
Margaret picked up two shots on the last end to win
and progress to the final. Well done to Ruth and Ken
and thank you to Pieter and Margaret for your great
friendship.
Lots of bowls happening this week with internal club
competitions, Bess Tweedie and Kenton/Kowie and
Social Saturday all coming up, we look forward to
seeing you on the greens and please feel free to join us
in the clubhouse for some refreshments afterwards.
Club duties (April 29 - May 5): Tabs - Ruth Low, Bar -
Addie Wolf and Lee Slater.
Dates to remember (April 29 - May 5): 2nd - Bess
Tweedie and Kenton/Kowie competitions at Kowie, 4th -
Social Saturday at Kenton.
Kowie Bowling Club
There is an old saying that anything that grows where
you do not want it to grow is a weed. Weeds on a
bowling green are an indication that your grass is under
st ress.
This could occur in June/July when wear on the
green from the traffic is greater than the recuperative
powers of the grass.
Our esteemed Department of Environmental Affairs
has now decided that kweek grass (aka c. Dactylon,
couch, Bermuda), what our “B” green is made of, is an
invasive weed and cannot be propagated or sold.
Anybody with a patch of this grass will have to obtain a
permit (costing R100) to continue growing it. If the letter
had been dated April 1 I would have accepted it, but it
was for real.
C. Dactylon is a warm season grass found mainly in
the southern hemisphere.
In 1949 when I started green keeping I was told by an
old green keeper that if you walked from Durban to
Oranjemund every second step you took you would be
stepping on a c. Dactylon.
I have read many articles on the origin of grasses and
some Americans claimed that c. Dactylon was first
discovered in Bermuda and only later found in other
parts of the Southern Hemisphere. It was imported to
the USA where to-day c. Dactylon covers 3,640 hectares
of their greens, mainly on golf courses in the southern
states – some weed!
Our farmers refer to the grass growing in the high
rainfall areas as sour-kweek while the grass growing in
the semi-arid regions as sweet-kweek. I wonder if they
will also be expected to get a permit for the grass
growing naturally on their veld. Anyway appeals have
now been lodged and we can only hope that common
sense will prevail. Strangely enough the finer c.
Transvalensis (Bayview – our “A” green) is recognised
as a purely South African specie.
The wonderful rains had everyone smiling except
those who had looked forward to an afternoon of bowls
last Tuesday. By Thursday many were suffering from
withdrawal symptoms and although the green was slow
and heavy they all enjoyed themselves. In the end those
with the strongest arms came out on top.
Congrats to Bryan Burger, Keith Benson, and Roland
von Gericke who earned themselves a visit to Ocean
B a s ke t .
Big weekend at Kowie with us hosting the finals of
the EA Mixed Pairs and the second round of the Moore
Shield / Colleen Timm Cup. With four teams out of
seven qualifiers from Kowie there was always a good
chance that Kowie teams would contest the final-of the
EA Pairs - and that is what happened. We saw some
very good bowls with some good teams losing where
they should not have lost.
In the final analysis it was the superior green craft
which determined the winner when Grumpy Enslin and
Helise Hattingh won the final against Pieter and
Margaret Stegman. Congrats to both teams as they
have both qualified to play in the Eastern Province
finals next week. Kowie men won both their games in
the Moore Shield while our ladies won one and lost the
other – well done.
Duties: Roll – Stephen Minaar, Mark – Rob Allin/Martin
Slattery, Tabs – Debbie Slattery, Bar – Mike Ryan.
Port Alfred Bowling Club
The welcome rains which we had this last week put
paid to the various competitions that would have been
played this week and gave everyone and the greens a
welcome break.
The club senior men’s and ladies’ singles will be
played at a later date which is convenient for everybody.
The greens were open again on Friday and we had
our usual end of the month “bring and braai” as well as
Both Helen Lockyear
Elanor Thomson holed
the only two-club of the
PORT ALFRED MIXED
April 27: The recent
welcome rains have
turned the course into a
beautifully verdant,
first-class venue for golf,
but with the
consequence that it has
also lengthened the play
considerably with the
ball not travelling as far
as in the recent past. The
result of this is that
scores are not as good
as they have been earlier
this year. Twenty-three
players turned out for
the early morning draw
into one mixed three-ball
and five four-balls
The bachelor herd of
Dave Stanley, Eric
Segers, Tim and Greg
Shanks reacted to the
conditions the best and
posted a winning 84
points. Runners-up Rosie
Calmeyer-Leach, Barrie
Brady and Fanie Smit’s
76 +5 = 81 points
counted out Jenny Adair,
Lynn West, Len Bohnen
and Andy Manson into
third place.
Nothing went right for
the” most golf” covey of
Heather van Harmelen,
Margie Reid, Martin
Lambrechts and Terry
Harris who could only
manage to card a pitiful
75 points to come
bottom of the list.
Two-clubs were holed by
Greg Shanks (6th),
Angela Trollip, Dave
Rose (8th) and Eric
Segers (13th) The best
nett score was posted by
Greg Shanks (70).
PAM golf donated R1,000
to Port Alfred and
Ndlambe Districts SPCA
during the course of the
week.
KGB RESULTS
April 24: Rained off.
April 26: The very
welcome rains that had
fallen earlier in the week
softened the fairways
considerably making
them more yielding and
lengthening the course.
The 41 players drawn
into three three-balls and
eight four-balls found the
course more difficult
than to what they had
become accustomed to
over the past few
months and this was
reflected in the scores in
the two-to-count
Stableford alliance
competition.
In fact it took just 83
points to win the
morning’s proceedings,
the very score recorded
by Mark Warren, Tom
Tagg, Paul Fryer and
Johny Johnson. Two
covies tied for second
place on 81 points,
namely (1) James
Lobban, Derrick van
Harmelen, Don Thomson
and John Muggeridge
and (2) Bob Shaw, Paul
Parker, Russell Warren
and Jan Immelman.
The team of Andy
Stembridge, Graham
Findlay, Jimmy van
Rensburg and Brian Reid
found the going toughest
of all managing only to
card 71 points, the
consequence of which
was the temporary
custody of the Hammer
en Sukkel trophy at the
19th hole.
Neil Loundar, Tom Tagg
and Mark Warren all
managed to birdie the
par three eighth, Tom
repeating this on the 11th
as well. There were no
individual rounds worthy
of mention.
Inflatables deliver
thrills and spills
WATER ACTION: One of the competing craft roaring through the waves and into the air at the rubber duck surf race on Saturday at the Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Challenge at East Beach
A spectacular finish to the ten
day long Amanzi Challenge
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
It was adrenaline-pumping action all
the way as the sounds of roaring
engines filled the air during the
Thunder Cat National Inflatable Boat
Racing at the Royal St Andrews Hotel
Amanzi Challenge last weekend.
The event saw competitors from as
far afield as Cape Town taking part in
the races at Port Alfred’s East Beach,
starting with a surf race on Saturday
and the Barnacles RSAH Amanzi
Challenge long-haul on Sunday.
The long-haul race was competed
over 16 laps with boats starting at Putt
Bridge and heading toward the river
mouth where they turned back toward
Putt Bridge to complete a lap.
For those who have never
experienced the excitement, the roar of
engines and the sight of inflatable
boats speeding down the river in
excess of 100km/h, this was a thrilling
experience and spectators lined the
river bank in order to get a good view
of the powerful inflatables.
The weather was also perfect for the
pilots and co-pilots and spectators
were happy to experience for
themselves the excitement that
accompanies the sport.
Gugulethu Adam, sports
development deputy director at the
department of sport, recreation, arts
and culture, said they decided to
sponsor 2018’s event because they
wanted to become part of this
marginalised sport.
“This year’s RSAH Amanzi Challenge
was bigger and we are proud to be
sponsors of this beautiful sport,” Adam
said.
“We started with a scale [sic] of
R200,000 this year, [and] we will
continue next year as well, and also
consider giving more.
“We want this event to be bigger
and better next year.
“We want to host it as a province but
also on a national level.”
Martin Bekker, owner of title sponsor
the Royal St Andrews Hotel,
announced the winners at the prizegiving
ceremony on Sunday evening
and thanked all who participated.
“It’s been an absolutely fantastic
weekend. It’s been absolutely amazing
having you guys participating.
“I am so sorry for those who
sustained injuries during the race,
[and] I am so sorry for your pain, but
you guys love that,” Bekker said.
Long haul and overall winners of the
race were pilot Hugo Erasmus, with
co-pilot Raynor Becker.
In second place were pilot Marc
Gleed, with his co-pilot Wiltas
L e e u w n e r.
Both teams also received the
Barnacle Challenge Phil Kolbe
Memorial Trophy.
RUBBER DUCK CHAMPS: Receiving their trophies for the long haul and as overall winners
in the rubber duck racing last weekend are, from left, Hugo Erasmus and Raynor Becker,
presenting the prizes, and the second-placed pair of Marc Gleed and Wiltas Leeuwner
