Why It’s Important to Keep Your Roof Clean!

ALGAE, FUNGUS, LICHENS, MOSS, BACTERIA AND MOULD…

Moss

Unlike the algae and lichens, moss is an actual

plant. Moss has a shallow root system and requires

a lot of moisture to survive. Areas with less sunlight

remain damp longer. Overhanging tree branches not

only provide more shade, but they also drop debris

that serves as a food source for moss. Like algae,

moss spores are often transferred by wind or

animals and can easily spread throughout

neighbourhoods.

Algae

Black stains are called gloeocapsa magma or GM.

GM algae is a bacterium that feeds off of both

asphalt and limestone roofing in moist, cool and

shaded areas of the roof. When there is minimal

light, GM forms a blue-green color. The more

shaded areas of the roof are more likely to have

these algae, which can harbour various types of

moulds.

Lichens

Lichens are basically the combination of algae and

fungus. ARMA describes lichens as fungus that

grow symbiotically with algae. These plant-like

organisms form a branching growth of “root-like

tentacles that penetrate deep into the shingle’s

organic, oil base for nourishment.”

01235 754000

How Can Stains Damage a Roof?

The stains and growth patches caused by algae,

fungus and moss can damage your roof through

shingle deterioration and wood rot. Both lead to

expensive repairs and can shorten the life of your

roof. Dealing with the cause can eliminate this

damage.

Shingle Damage

GM algae is a bacterium that feeds off of both

asphalt and limestone. That means that these

organisms are literally eating away at your shingles.

Lichen colonies can be quite damaging to shingles.

The penetrating tentacles create pock marks where

they grow and eventually ruin the shingles.

Moss is even more detrimental to roof shingles.

Moss can cause the edges of the shingles to lift or

curl—often the first sign that a roof replacement is

needed. And because moss holds in moisture, it can

freeze in the winter, causing even more shingle

damage

Roof Cleaning Starts from just £500* for a 3 bed house. This prices is a guide based upon various

assumptions upon house size, and should be accurate. If your home is larger than normal, there may be a

small increase to these prices. In all instances, a no obligation home survey is required before any order is

accepted.

Community

Recognition for Pangbourne Dementia Forum

Local Group Wins ‘Community Group of the Year’ Award

L

ast December Pangbourne Dementia Forum was

nominated for the Community Group of the Year

Award and they have since been informed that they

were joint winners along with ‘The Burghfield

Santas’. Gill and Di collected the award on behalf

of all the volunteers, without whom none of the

work of the group could happen. The award

recognises and rewards a community group which

has made an exceptional contribution to the district

of West Berkshire and its residents. The not-forprofit

work involves a team of local volunteers,

promoting equality, inclusion and working together.

The Forum was started just

over 18 months ago in the

Dorman Rooms, St

Bernadette’s Church with a

small group of people. An open

day was held to promote

“Living well with Dementia”.

The group work together trying

to encourage an improved

attitude towards people and

l o v e d o n e s l i v i n g w i t h

dementia in Pangbourne and surrounds.

The stats show that 44% of people with dementia

feel they lost their friends after diagnosis. 67% Do

not feel part of the community, 77% Feel anxious or

depressed and 33% live alone.

Pangbourne Dementia Forum did not want anybody

in Pangbourne to feel this way so they embarked on

a mission of inclusion. They aim their events at the

early retired, widowed, divorced etc. All people

who could be vulnerable should they receive the

diagnosis. Once you are involved in a community,

club, attend events, enjoy yourself and the

company then, if you experience a decline in health

or memory, you will be amongst friends. You can

still join in the fun, not only do you feel secure

your carer will be able to let their hair down a little

while as they will feel included and supported.

The Forum has held many events over the last 2

years including The Pangbourne Picnic, with a sing

along with the Pangbourne Choral Society,

10

Refreshers Day,when

they highlighted

opportunities open to the village and they invited

about 25 organisations and activities to promote

themselves. From this event was born the ‘Crib

afternoons’ at the Dorman Rooms and there were

also about 12 new members to the bowls club. For

Dementia Action Week in May last year the group

held an informative drop in afternoon for the many

people who are not aware of the help there is for

them. Several people said it was very informative

and that they had not realised there was so much

help out there. In June last

year the group held a “Not

Strictly Dance” which went

down really well. The Lindy

Hoppers were invited and they

managed to get most people up

and dancing. For those who

were unable we did hand jiving

and everyone had a wonderful

time. In the same month the

Forum has a stall at the fete,

again information regarding

living with dementia was on offer.

After the summer, Pangbourne Dementia Forum

found a home: “The Function Room” at the George

Hotel. Kiren Sharma made it all happen. He spoke

to Rajinda at the George, regarding The Dementia

forum using the function room as a base and that is

where The Thursday Club was born. Thursday Club

is now held every 3rd Thursday of the month, and

there has been games afternoons, fish and chip

lunches, Singing Bingo, Pie and Mash lunch,

Christmas Carols and more.

None of this could be possible without the financial

support of Kiren Sharma, MBE, DL, to whom the

group are truly thankful and to Rajinda, The George

Hotel, who has now retired. The Forum wish him all

the best for the future. Devarshi is now the new

owner of The George and is extremely supportive of

the Thursday Club.

Health & Fitness

Back pain: is it frustrating you?

Insight & advice from your local physiotherapy expert

W

hat is the answer?

If pain in your lower back, the lumbar

spine, is stopping your usual activities or

making you feel more cautious about

movement please read on. You’re certainly

not alone if back pain is getting in the way of

your day to day life- whether it is playing with

children or grandchildren, sleeping, or simply

lifting something.

What is causing my pain?

85% of low back pain is

classified as non-specific.

This means that there is

no underlying disease or

p a t h o l o g y c a u s i n g

symptoms. There are some

cases where it is clear

that a disc (they don’t,

can’t and never will slip

anywhere!! – more of this

rant shortly) is causing

pain. In other cases, it can be clear that a

joint is leading to pain.

What about non-specific low back pain?

This is where it can get tricky…very tricky. The

joints of the body all work in a relatively

coordinated way with some slight differences

between people, but in some cases, for

example a stiff right hip can lead to a painful

left low back.

For other patients I see their own thoughts and

feelings about what is causing their back pain

can make their back feel worse. I have seen

people who have been erroneously, incorrectly

and JUST PLAIN WRONGLY been told that if

they bend their back a disc will physically slip

leading to them spending their days in a

wheelchair. This incorrect information made

these individuals scared to bend their backand

guess what? Their backs hurt even more.

The answer to this was giving people the

correct information, building their confidence

and getting them moving again in a sensible,

gradual way.

Stress and a lack of sleep can make backs feel

worse. If you miss two consecutive deep sleep

cycles on two consecutive nights research has

shown that your symptoms can feel anything

up to 25% worse.

What is the answer?

A thorough assessment

of your symptoms, your

back, hips, a

controversial joint

called the sacroiliac

joint and possibly your

nerves is the first step.

If you are concerned

about hurting your back

with normal activities,

giving you the right

information on why backs can hurt and how

to move is also crucial. Finally - taking a look

at sleep, stress, diet and activity will also

help. Maximise these elements and your

chances for resolving back symptoms improve

dramatically.

NB: discs don’t slip. It’s an inaccurate phrase

that was first coined in the 1920s.

If you would like us to help you with back

pain please call and make an appointment on

01189767189.

Local Clubs

Goring Gap Boat Club has come home!

New Club House signals new era

G

oring Gap Boat Club (GGBC), started by a

few individuals off the back of the revived

Goring and Streatley Regatta in 1992, has

found a permanent home at Lower

Basildon. As we write, the club have

completed the final move from the

‘temporary’ site near Hardwick House to their

new home along the beautiful stretch of the

Thames between Goring and Pangbourne. To

find them by car look out for the entrance

opposite Hook End Lane in Lower Basildon.

In recent years GGBC membership has swelled

to 140. With facilities now

better than ‘a bit of outdoor

racking and a brolly if it

rains’, it is hoped that more

will join. Members come

from all walks of life -

veterans of the river and

beginners alike, no

experience is required to

join GGBC. The club’s aim is

to offer recreational rowing for the community

- an opportunity for all adults to enjoy

unpowered boating on the Thames.

The Goring and Streatley Regatta, which the

club have run since 1992, has been integral to

putting GGBC on the map. All funds raised

from the regatta have been saved for the day

that GGBC could build its own boathouse. In

2015, with then chairman Hugh Baker-Smith at

the helm, the search for land and planning

permission completed and the build of the

new boathouse began. Just over 3 years later

Hugh, now GGBC President, says: “Over the

last 25 years, several hundred club members

and local benefactors have contributed in

some way to the financing and building of

GGBC’s permanent home. As we finally move

in, it is right to thank them all for their

individual contributions to this community

project”.

Although some

of the work

required to build the new site necessarily

needed to be done by professional

contractors, a large amount of the effort to

get the new boathouse site to what is today

has been done voluntarily by GGBC members

and even some non-members who have seen

the progress from the other side of the river

and come to help. Every possible skill has

been utilised, and the long hot summer of

2018 saw many members giving up their

weekends to toil the land, clear debris, build

access, erect the main

building.

January 2019 saw Phase 1

of the new site build

complete with the main

building erected, access

and pontoons installed to

enable rowing from the

new site from January. But

it has not stopped there -

GGBC will continue to fundraise for Phase 2,

which it hopes to complete in the next few

years and which will see GGBC continuing to

strive to fully develop this precious

community resource. Phase 2 is intended to

include a grass roof, further landscaping, a

slip way, utilities, and internally a mezzanine

floor with kitchen, changing room and

training room.

So, GGBC now sits where the name itself

intended it always to be, in the Goring Gap -

an area of outstanding natural beauty - and

it's from here that GGBC will continue to

welcome new and old members alike. If you

are interested to join the club, or just want

to look at what the past few years have

culminated in, please do go and pay them a

visit.

Book Review

A Golden Future

by John Bennett

T

his book is fictional but describes the pressures

which are shaping British universities today. It

explores the opportunities and risks faced by

today’s students and academic staff. It draws on

John Bennett’s long career at Reading University

where he led his department in undertaking

international research which helped shape teaching

and practice in the UK construction industry.

A Golden Future describes how Gordon Holmes,

Vice Chancellor of a third-rate university, aims to

improve the university’s reputation by cooperating

with a large Chinese conglomerate whose interests

include a company developing intelligent implants

able to identify health problems. This pushes the

university’s professors into a commercial world

which they understand very little. NHS doctors feel

the new approach to health care devalues their

skills.

Protestors claim the implants linked to massive

computers are a Chinese Big Brother aiming to

influence individual behaviour. After many shocks

and compromises, the new approach is launched. It

is based in a new biology building manufactured by

the Chinese conglomerate in China and assembled

on the university campus. The building is

dominated by three golden dragons and generates

excellent publicity for the university.

The eventual winners from Gordon Holmes’

initiatives are not his professors but two PhD

students. Their research gives them a deep

understanding of major changes in their subjects

resulting from the university’s links with the

Chinese company. This creates surprising

opportunities for them which should inspire all

young people thinking about their own university

courses.

Local resident and author John Bennett had a

successful career in the construction industry

before becoming a professor at the University of

Reading. His research centre published many

influential reports, including Investing in Building

2001 endorsed by Prime Minister, Margaret

Thatcher. He has undertaken research in the USA,

Japan, Australia and the EU. He was founding editor

of the leading academic journal Construction

Management and Economics. Between 1985 and

2012 he wrote four influential books describing the

current theory and best practice of construction

management including Construction - The Third

Way. Since he retired, he has turned to writing

novels; A Golden Future is the first.

Technology

Dash Cams

The dashboard camera has become

increasingly popular recently. So, should you

think about buying one?

A dash cam is a special camera, mounted on a

dashboard for the purpose of recording sounds

and images while you're driving. But why might

you want one?

First-hand evidence in case of a car accident -

The main reason why people invest in one. If

you are involved in a collision you can prove

that you were not at fault by submitting the

footage as evidence.

Reporting a dangerous driver - Sometimes you

see a driver do something reckless or

irresponsible and fear for the safety of other

road-users. Reporting becomes much easier

with evidence.

Extra insurance for parents - An extra

incentive for our teens to pay attention if the

knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring.

Prevention of insurance claim scams -

Insurance fraud is a growing problem. Some

drivers purposely cause accidents in order to

put the blame on the other party, so they can

extort money from the victim, who has no

way of proving their innocence, so these

people also fake injuries in order to collect

the insurance money. A dash cam will allow

you to prove that you were not at fault.

It keeps an eye on your car while you are not

in it! - Have you ever returned to your car in

a car park to find it's been scratched? A dash

camera can record such events, as most can

be set to record even with the car engine off.

Some can send the data to your laptop or

smart phone, giving you peace of mind.

Dash cams are set to become as necessary an

addition to driving as sat-navs. If you don't

already have one, perhaps you should think

about it.

Goring Gap Boat Club

March 2019 -

Goring Gap Boat Club, Preparing for Spring…

Anyone who has been following Goring Gap Boat Clubs progress in recent months

will know that they have now been operating from the new boat house at Lower Basildon since early

January.

They are now getting ready for Spring and would like to share upcoming dates for your diary:

➢ After the start on Sunday 3rd March, Go Row sessions continue of subsequent first Sundays of

each month. All are welcome (over 16s) to try out rowing on the Thames.

➢ Mad March Dash on Sunday 17th March, come and see the club in action competing against

clubs from the surrounding area. Friendly time trials and skills assessment.

➢ The Boat Race (Oxford & Cambridge) on Sunday April 7th, a social gathering (hopefully at the

Catherine Wheel, Goring) to cheer on this magnificent event.

➢ Learn to Row course will start on Saturday 27th April and end on Saturday 18th May.

➢ Open Day on Saturday 15th June, local community event to celebrate the new boathouse

➢ The Regatta – the event of the season, Saturday 20th July, a family day out with full schedule

of racing, stalls, bar, food, music and fairground.

Additionally, off the back of the stupendous support they have had from the local community and

volunteers, the club also wants to put a call out to anyone who is able to donate their time during the

next stage of development and invite you to join the Boat Maintenance or Bank Maintenance teams.

Boat Maintenance: In the same way that they’ve mobilised volunteers to build the boat house, the club

take great pride in the way they keep over 40 rowing boats on the water throughout the year. Behind

this achievement sits a small team of club members who over the years have developed their skills to

work fibreglass, carbon fibre and wood repairs.

Bank Maintenance: Likewise, now that there is a larger piece of land to manage, the club is ready to

welcome volunteers who wouldn’t mind rolling up their sleeves to help develop and maintain the

beautiful riverbank and grounds.

Both teams are voluntary, meet weekdays and/or weekends according to individual schedules and, if the

Boat Maintenance team is anything to go by, are not all work and no play. The social aspect of Goring

Gap Boat Club being integral to all that the club does.

If you would be interested in trying out either of these teams for size, or just want to come down for an

informal look around to see what the club is about, please email David

sitemanager@goringgapbc.org.uk.

Spring Concert

PANGBOURNE CHORAL SOCIETY’S

‘GLORIOUS’ SPRING CONCERT

Poulenc - Wagner - Puccini

Saturday, 16 th March: 7.30 pm

Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel,

Pangbourne College

Pangbourne Choral Society’s Spring Concert will focus on the ‘Gloria’ masses of Francis

Poulenc (1959) and Giacomo Puccini (1880), interspersed with Richard Wagner’s Siegfried

Idyll (1870). The three pieces are rich with music of the Romantic genre ideal for large choir

and orchestra.

The centerpiece consists of the two celebratory Gloria masses. Puccini’s is an early work

pointing directly to later operatic compositions with wonderfully rich vocal scoring of the Latin

Mass. Although composed in 1880, it only gained full international recognition in 1959.

Poulenc’s Gloria is equally rich pointing towards the post-Romantic musical era.

Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was originally intended as a private piece – a birthday present for his

wife Cosima, on the birth of their son. The orchestration was expanded to 35 players when

eventually it ‘went public’.

The 100-strong PCS will be joined by (on this occasion) the 46-strong Southern Sinfonia

Orchestra, both conducted by Pangbourne College Music Director, Ellie Calver, making this the

ideal concert to usher in the Spring and a more positive mood in these uncertain times.

Our talented young soloists are Danae Eleni (soprano) in the Poulenc, Adam Tunnicliffe

(tenor) and Robert Garland (baritone).

Mick Lewers, PCS Chairman comments: ‘The Choir is loving each and every rehearsal of this

wonderful music and a great concert is in prospect’.

Tickets £15 including programme (£8 for age 18 and under) are available online

(www.pangbournechoral.org.uk), from Choral Society members, also at Garlands Organic, 6

Reading Road, Pangbourne or on the door.
