Active8-May2019

Welcome to May’s edition of R 8 ACTIVE EMEMBER our story from a couple of months ago about decades-old love letters which had turned up in a store room at a Meersbrook shop? We thought one of our readers would either know something about them or be able to put us in touch with Gwenda Monks, who they were addressed to. That’s exactly what happened and Gwenda drove down from her home in Leeds to see the letters written to her in the 1950s, and also meet Fran Kershaw who had discovered them. You can read Deborah Wain’s story on page ten. Established in 2002, this magazine is produced monthly by award-winning Heron Publications Ltd and is carefully delivered to 15,500 homes and businesses in Woodseats, Meersbrook, Norton Lees, Norton, Beauchief, Meadowhead, Greenhill, Upper Bradway, Batemoor, Jordanthorpe, Lowedges and beyond. The ‘Bowshaw Barrier’ is one of the area’s biggest eyesores but there is hope that it might finally be removed. See page six. Family-run businesses are the lifeblood of the local area and fully deserve our support. You can read the background stories behind some of them in a special Active8 feature on pages 28-40. Wartime air-raid shelters are the topic of this month’s Memory Lane feature on page 18. Enjoy this month’s Active8! Editor: Mike Firth. Editorial: Deborah Wain. Design Manager: Helen Firth.
