Deep passion for pooches
inspires Mokena pet stylist
T.J. Kremer III, Editor
Different styles for dog grooming adorn the wall at
Bone-ita Pet Styling.
The dog days of summer
may still be months away,
but a new spot in Mokena
can let pooches get a head
start on their summer hairstyles.
Bone-ita — located at
11600 Francis Road, Unit
C3, in Mokena — held its
grand opening and open
house April 28, where
community members and
their canine companions
got a look at the pet-styling
shop and were served
some treats.
Kristin Anaya, owner of
Bone-ita, got started in the
dog-grooming profession
straight out of high school
and has continued with her
passion for nearly the past
20 years.
“A lot of my friends
were going off to college,
and I wasn’t sure what I
wanted to do,” Anaya said.
“I’ve always loved animals.
I thought about possibly
being a vet tech, but
I just didn’t think I could
deal with the sad stuff.
So, I heard of a grooming
school in Homer Glen,
which was close to home,
so I went there.”
Since then, Anaya has
worked with other pet
groomers, most recently
in Frankfort at Hair of the
Dog, and even competed
in dog-grooming shows,
at which she specialized in
miniature poodle styling.
“People ask me all the
time, ‘If you didn’t groom,
what would you do?’” Anaya
said. “I truthfully don’t
know. It’s my passion. I
love it. I can’t see myself
doing anything else, ever.”
Lincoln-Way welding teacher wins equipment for school
Sean Hastings
Contributing Editor
Lincoln-Way welding
teacher Daymon Gast won
$38,000 worth of welding
equipment after being
the leading vote getter in a
competition held by Miller
Welding, but to Gast, the
recognition that the program
got from it, is worth
more than the prize package.
Miller Welding held a
competition called “Who’s
Building You,” where
teachers were nominated
by peers for their work as a
teacher as to why they were
deserving of the prize.
Former East and Central
student Codey Underwood
nominated Gast. Gast was
one of 459 teachers nominated.
The final voting was
narrowed down to a top
three, where Gast won by
50 percent of the votes.
“I was honored and excited
that a student would
remember me for this opportunity
being a year out
of school,” Gast said.
Underwood is now a
first year apprentice in the
597 Pipefitters program.
“He really had done
things right,” Gast said
about Underwood taking
advantage of what the
Lincoln-Way programs offered.
“He was a shining
example of how Lincoln-
Way and this program can
help students.”
Gast’s welding classes
have become so popular
that he now teaches them
all day to accommodate
for the amount of students
wanting to be in it.
“The prizes are nice and
we’ll utilize those quite
well,” Gast said. “But the
recognition that it gives
the program is important
and when a student goes
out and interviews and
they see on an interview
application that they went
through our program,
that’s going to help a student
and ought to give
them a leg up”
He also noted the importance
of having skilled
workers in the workforce
and how the numbers have
declined slightly lately.
In class April 24 students
were working toward
finishing up a number of
different projects and Gast
took the time to check on
each student, assessing
their work and helping
them if they needed it.
And for senior students
Vaughn Clymer and Wyatt
Daymon Gast assess sophomore Tommy Schaaf’s work
in class April 24 at Lincoln-Way Central. Gast said it
is tough to get the students out of the shop when the
period is up. Sean Hastings/22nd Century Media
Grady, to see their teacher
be properly recognized for
the work he puts in, was
nice to see.
It was clear that Gast’s
class is something the two
graduating seniors will
never forget.
“[I’ll remember] his
whole class; there’s no
dull moment in his class,”
Grady said.
“He’s a great teacher,
from working on the
smoker to learning pipe
and he wants to get us certified
by the end of the year
on certain parts,” Clymer
said. “The three years that
I’ve been in this class, it’s
hard to say anything bad
about it.”
Students, community
members, other teachers
and fellow welders all rallied
behind Gast with voting
on Facebook after Gast
posted a video of himself
detailing what the competition
was. He received
over 80 Facebook requests
during the week of the
competition.
“I was pretty proud of
him,” Grady said. “It’s
a pretty big accomplishment,
I’d say, for New
Lenox and the welding
community.”
Clymer built off what
Grady said saying that it
benefits everyone because
it gives them recognition
as well as equipment they
need.
The “coolest” piece of
equipment in the prize
package is the augmented
virtual welding system,
Gast said.
The system allows the
students to weld without
striking an arc and it
gives feedback through its
technology sensors. It can
generate a report and tell
the student how they performed
with the weld using
the machine.
“In the big scope of
things, you can save money
without using electricity
and consumables, but if
the student is struggling on
learning a particular process
in the shop and can’t
get over that hump with an
actual arc weld, they can
come into the classroom,
weld on the machine and it
will give an assessment,”
Gast said.
Gast said it’s like having
another teacher in the
classroom that can provide
input. It is valued at
$22,000, Gast said.
“We would never be
able to afford that without
the award,” Gast said.
“It wouldn’t even be a
thought.”

Mokena site for
mother, son bowl
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Flashing lights and neon
bowling balls: What a way
for a mother to spend date
night with her son. On Friday,
May 3, the Frankfort
Park District held a night
of bowling at Thunder
Bowl for mothers and their
sons.
“This is the seventh
year we’ve hosted this”
said Cali DeBella, special
events coordinator for the
Frankfort Park District.
“We do daddy daughter
dance so we thought we
would do something different
for mothers and
their sons.”
About 60 people participated
in the event, and
moms brought home a gift.
“We always hold this
event a week or so before
Mother’s Day so that
moms can have an evening
with their sons,” DeBella
said. “A few of the moms
and sons have been attending
since the beginning,
so it’s fun to watch them
grow through the years.”
Davis Korbel, from Mokena, and Nathan Jackiw, from
Frankfort, check out their bowling score during a
mother and son bowling night Friday, May 3, held at
Thunder Bowl in Mokena.
Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
Jennifer Hayward of
Mokena brought her son
Ben. It was their third year
taking part in the event.
“We have a great time
hanging out together,” Jennifer
said. “It’s become a
tradition because we come
with the same neighbors
and friends. This is equivalent
to the daddy daughter
dance to take a special
night out. It’s important to
spend time with my son. It
instills a good relationship
for us and to make him feel
special.”
writes five reasons the
mother-son relationship is
so important. One of them
she writes, “Moms who
keep their sons close are
setting them up for success
later in life, both in
personal relationships and
at work. Because mothers
work to teach their
sons emotional intelligence
(starting from when
the days they urge their
screaming toddler to ‘use
your words’ to when they
won’t accept their teenage
son’s grunts as a reasonable
response) their sons
grow up with the communication
skills that they
need to navigate adulthood.”
As mom’s gave high
fives to their sons after a
game, Jacquelyn Vondrak
from Frankfort was excited
to talk about celebrating
her son’s birthday for the
evening.
“We’re celebrating Samuel’s
birthday today. He
turned 9,” Vondrak said.
“When you have more
than one kid, spending individual
time with one is
rare but totally awesome.
It’s important to spend
one-on-one time with all
your kids. It’s not only
needed, it’s special.”

FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Celebrating 50: Orland Fire
dedication paves way for
open house in July
Throughout the past 50
years, the Orland Fire Protection
District has grown
from a volunteer fire department
into a full-time
district with high accolades.
And with its 50th anniversary
upon it, Orland
Fire is focusing on its beginnings.
To begin its 50th anniversary
festivities, Orland
Fire hosted a dedication
ceremony April 27, honoring
past members.
“Each vehicle has a
plaque on the side, and our
goal here is to remember
our history,” Fire Chief Michael
Schofield said prior
to the event.
Several past members
were honored April 27.
Among them was Art
Granat Jr., who accepted the
honor for himself and his
late father, Art Granat Sr.
OFPD dedicated its newest
fire truck to the father
and son. Granat Sr. was the
first elected fire chief when
it was a volunteer department.
And Granat Jr. spent
38 years as a firefighter for
Orland Fire.
The department also
dedicated a new ambulance
to Donald Piscitello,
who served Orland Fire
from 1994-2011. He died
in 2016.
Finally, Orland Fire
dedicated its new Legacy
Lane, a wall within the administrative
building that
features images of all the
retired OFPD firefighters.
The wall was dedicated to
the two retired firefighters
who made it possible: Dan
Schloegel and Dan Smith.
Orland Fire is to continue
to celebrate its anniversary
with an open house on July
20. The open house is to be
held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at
the Orland Fire Protection
District Training Academy,
10728 W. 163rd Place in
Orland Park.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Tragedy begets comedy
during Limestone Stage’s ‘I
Hate Shakespeare’
The histories, tragedies
and comedies of William
Shakespeare have caused
countless theatergoers to
Broker - Management Team
“10”
contemplate the meaning
of life and love. Limestone
Stage added laughter to that
list with its latest production,
“I Hate Shakespeare.”
The Steph DeFeriepenned
play found the
works of The Bard reimagined
and mined for humor
during a series of performances
held April 25-28
at the Lockport Township
Building. A texting Juliet,
zombie-hunted Richard III
and more had fans in tears
as a result of laughing,
from start to finish.
First-time Limestone
Stage cast member Josh
Funneman played Hamlet
throughout the night both
in the traditional sense and
as Shakespeare’s greatest
defender against the harsh
criticism of an Unhappy
Person played by Sabrina
Mangan. He served as a
narrator of sorts, introducing
scenes while illustrating
the many ways Shakespearean
themes are still
relevant today.
Limestone Stage Artistic
Director Kit Lindblom explained
that each year the
group presents a “spring
classic.” Past performances
have included “The Taming
of the Shrew,” “The Importance
of Being Earnest”
and “The Seagull.”
“This is a newer show,
but because it deals with
Shakespeare we are considering
it under the classic
theme,” Lindblom said.
“It very much has a sense
of irony because, while it’s
titled ‘I Hate Shakespeare,’
it shows the audience that
you can still like the guy.
It pokes fun at him, but by
the time the show is over I
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Grade-school project has
kept Tinley Park family
smiling for more than 20
years
Most Mother’s Day gifts
have a short shelf life: A
card displayed for a month;
flowers that last a week; a
nice, two-hour meal.
For one Tinley Park family,
however, a simple plant
is a gift that has kept giving
for more than 20 years.
As a young student at
Christa McAuliffe Elementary
School, Amanda
Meyers — a 30-year-old
English teacher these days
— painted a pot, put a plant
in it and gave it to her mother,
Trish, as a Mother’s Day
present. The plant is still
going and bringing smiles
to the family all these years
later.
The Meyers family is not
100 percent sure when the
plant entered their lives —
Amanda’s third-grade year
is their best bet. But Trish
fondly recalls receiving it.
“She came home and
was all excited but had to
wait to give me it,” Trish
said. “She was wondering
what my reaction would
be. I was over the moon,
of course, and she broke
out in the biggest, proudest
smile.”
In the years since, the
plant — still in its original
pot, with a young Amanda’s
handwriting etched on
its side — has been a continuous
presence on their
kitchen sink windowsill, a
reminder of their bond and
what they’ve meant to each
other.
“My mom is the strongest
woman I know,”
Amanda said. “My mom
puts family before anything
else. Growing up, she never
missed anything — and I
mean anything.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox triplets all put
up big numbers on ACT
The McDermott sisters
felt confident that they
would score well on the
ACT after all of the practice
tests they had done,
but for all three to score
near perfect or perfect was
something else.
Alayna, Corina and
Madeline McDermott, triplet
juniors at Lincoln-Way
West, scored 36, 35, 35 on
their ACTs, respectively.
Alayna scored a 35 the
first time she took the test
and turned it into a 36 on
the second try.
“I was speechless for
a while,” Alayna said.
“But I knew once I saw
that my scores were pretty
good, I knew that my sisters’
would also have done
pretty well because they’re
pretty on par with me most
of the time.”
Corina, though, is her
own worst critic, she said,
and while she knew her
sisters were going to score
well, she wondered if her
scores would be up there
with her sisters.
“When I got my score,
I was thrilled and really
proud of myself,” she said.
“I put effort in, too, I just
don’t realize it as much. I
was proud of them, and it
just shows that hard work
pays off.”
Madeline scored a 35 in
all four sections the first
time she took the test, with
no preparation or studying,
so she felt that with extra
practice tests and studying,
she could maintain or improve
her score.
“I didn’t really need to
learn anything; I just needed
to see if I could apply it
all in four hours, because it
does wear you down as you
go,” Madeline said.
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Stacey’s Place designs oneof-a-kind
projects
For Frankfort resident
Mike Moyzis, the best
part of completing a custom
woodworking project
is seeing how the finished
piece brings a smile to his
customers’ faces.
“It’s all personalized,”
he said. “The items that we
have in here are items that
pretty much nobody else
has.”
Moyzis and his wife,
Stacey Burke, celebrated
the grand opening of their
new downtown Frankfort
shop on April 26. Stacey’s
Place, located at 4 W. Nebraska
St. in Frankfort,
incorporates many of the
items sold at the couple’s
former business, Morgan’s
Place, which specialized
in vintage and repurposed
home goods.
The new store also focuses
on refinished furniture,
Burke said.
“People bring in furniture
for us to paint, and we
couldn’t do that in a small
space,” she said. “So, by
taking this space on, it allowed
to showcase our
pieces, the scale of what we
do.”
Morgan’s Place was
named after former Lincoln-Way
Central student
Morgan Schiller, who has
Moyzis said the new business
will continue the
couple’s tradition of supporting
individuals with
Remembering fuzzball friends
TJ Kremer iii
tj@mokenamessenger.com
I’ve written about this
before, but it’s still
always nice when The
Messenger gets to cover
news that involves our
furry — or feathered or
scaled or whatever —
companions.
This week, we got
to highlight a new
dog grooming shop in
Mokena, Bone-ita. (You
might have noticed the
happy dogs on the cover
and story on Page 3.)
While I was at the shop
interviewing the owner,
Kristin Anaya, close to a
dozen dogs were having
a grand old time milling
about with each other and,
I’m guessing, complimenting
each other on
their fabulous new ‘doos.
There’s something truly
special about the bond
we humans form with
our animal companions,
including domesticated,
nondomesticated and even
fictional ones.
Some of you may know
that I am admittedly a big
Star Wars nerd, and so last
week’s news that Peter
“Chewbacca” Mayhew
passed away at age 74 was
a significant blow to me
and millions upon millions
of other Star Wars
fans across the globe.
By all accounts, Mayhew
was the true embodiment
of Chewbacca; he
was a gentle giant who
gave generously to multiple
charities, and at an
imposing 7-feet 2-inches
tall still managed to put
young and old alike at
ease in his presence.
Chewbacca was the
ultimate co-pilot. Always
loyal. Always ready to
do what was necessary to
help his friends, especially
Han Solo, whom Chewbacca
had sworn a life
debt to.
Chewbacca could make
us laugh with his gestures
and grunts and growls.
He didn’t need to speak in
any language we knew because
his messages were
universally understood
anyway.
Sure, Disney has found
another body for the suit,
but it will never be the
same knowing Mayhew is
not where he should be.
It’s been reported that
Chewbacca’s character
was inspired by George
Lucas’ own dog, a fitting
tribute to one of mankind’s
truest friends.
It’s never easy to lose a
loved one, including the
nonhuman, even fictional,
beloved characters from
our youth. It’s likely that
the character of Chewbacca
will live on in the
ever-expanding Disney
universe of everything,
but we very well may
never see another Peter
Mayhew again, and the
world is a sadder place
for it.
Rest in peace, dear
Wookie. May the Force be
with you, always!
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Homer man charged with
DUI, reckless homicide,
leaving scene in fatal I-55
crash
A Homer Glen man
was charged April 30 for
his involvement in a twocar
crash with one fatality
April 28 on Interstate 55 at
the Damen Avenue exit in
Chicago, according to Illinois
State Police.
Rami Matariyeh, 22, was
charged by the Cook County
State’s Attorney’s Office
with leaving the scene
of a crash-death, leaving
the scene of a crash-great
bodily harm, aggravated
DUI-death, aggravated
DUI-great bodily harm and
reckless homicide.
At 3:19 a.m. April 28,
Matariyeh was driving a
2015 Infiniti sedan southbound
on I-55 at Damen
when his vehicle struck the
rear end of a 2011 Hyundai
sedan, ISP said. The
Hyundai was an on-duty
Uber that held a driver and
three passengers, including
Jamie A. Poulos, 23,
of Berwyn, who was in
the backseat and unable to
be extricated from the car
before it became fully engulfed
in flames after being
hit.
Poulos died from the extent
of her injuries, police
said.
All three of the remaining
occupants of the Uber
reportedly were removed
from the vehicle, with two
transported to an area hospital
in stable condition.
Also in Matariyeh’s car
was a 24-year-old Bolingbrook
woman, police said.
She reportedly was transported
to an area hospital in
serious condition.
Matariyeh left the crash
site but was later apprehended
at his home, police
said. He was transported to
an area hospital for injuries
from the crash.
LWE student’s play focuses on history, sacrifice
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
For Lincoln-Way
East student Anmarie
D’Ortenzio, music and
theater have been lifelong
passions.
The high school junior,
who has been singing
since she was 4 years old,
is the daughter of a voice
teacher and the granddaughter
of an opera singer.
She also spent 10 years
with Curtain Call Theatre
in Mokena, experience
that helped prepare her for
her newest role as director.
On April 28,
D’Ortenzio’s play “Sweet
Pride” premiered at the
Founders Community Center
in Frankfort. More than
50 students auditioned for
the community production,
which D’Ortenzio wrote,
produced and directed.
“This is about a love story
during the Civil War,”
D’Ortenzio explained.
“It focuses on sacrifice
and how our pride gets in
the way of what we truly
want. Writing, producing
and directing this has been
the best experience of my
life.”
D’Ortenzio has been in
more than 15 productions,
and her grandmother is her
main voice teacher.
“I’ve always had a love
for theater,” D’Ortenzio
said. “I can remember
my first role, which was a
poppy in ‘The Wizard of
Oz.’ I was 6 years old.”
D’Ortenzio described
her cast members, many of
whom are fellow Lincoln-
Way East students, as “incredible,”
adding that everyone
volunteered their
time on Sunday nights to
make the production happen.
“Due to complications
with space, we got kicked
out of our original spot,”
D’Ortenzio said, laughing.
“ ... I expected to
show this in a small room
at my school. We ended
up with the show being
at the Founders Center. It
worked out better than I
ever expected.”
In the months leading
up to the play’s debut,
D’Ortenzio’s mother, Marie
Michuda-D’Ortenzio,
opened up the family’s
home as a rehearsal space
for 28 students.
“I cook a lot,” Marie
Michuda-D’Ortenzio
said. “We have a big
foyer. For two months,
I’ve had costume racks, a
stump, prop tables in my
living room.”
D’Ortenzio wrote
three different versions
of “Sweet Pride,” but it
was only within the past
year that the final product
came to life. She credited
Lincoln-Way East Choir
Director Hanna Samawi
with giving her the push
forward to succeed.
“Putting this together
has been a lot of hard work
not only for me, but my
assistant director and the
entire cast,” D’Ortenzio
said. “Everyone pitched
in, even the moms.”
Max Adams, who had
the lead role of John, said
he was honored to be in
his friend’s production.
The Lincoln-Way East junior
not only performed
in “Sweet Pride” but was
also in his high school’s
spring musical, “Mamma
Mia!”
“Anmarie is my best
friend,” Adams said.
“When I found out she
was writing a play, I knew
instantly I wanted to be
involved. I know how
hard she works. I knew it
was going to be amazing,
and I had to be part of it.
When she said proceeds
were going to the Frankfort
Food Pantry, I wanted
to do this even more. Being
involved in a process
like this makes this so
much more rewarding.”
Lincoln-Way East senior
Ellie Houlihan, of
Tinley Park, plays John’s
love interest in the play.
“Sweet Pride” marked
her final performance as a
high school student.
“It’s so meaningful
to work with all these
amazing people — to
keep learning as my final
high school acting career
ends,” she said.
Houlihan has taken part
in all of the Lincoln-Way
East musicals since her
freshman year of high
school.
Matt’s Old Mokena
Early Mokena mayor Noble in adventure, life
Matt galik
Contributing Columnist
For much of our
Village’s history, it
was a small, rural
community. Like countless
others across the
nation, Mokena was unremarkable
on the surface;
however, underneath the
façade, gold was to be
found, for every resident
had a story. Most were
so unique, as to only be
found here in our neighborhood.
One of these
amazing stories was that
of the life of Noble Jones,
an early Village resident
and mayor.
He first saw the light
of day on Nov. 16, 1834,
in a place called Barnstone,
a stone’s throw
north of the Canadian
border. When a lad of
only 3 years old, the
Jones family crossed into
the United States, settling
in New York state.
An even bigger move
came in 1844, when
they made a pioneer’s
journey to Illinois, which
at that time was the heart
of the untamed west.
The family traveled via
steamer over the Great
Lakes, and touched
down in Chicago, which
presented a very underwhelming
sight. Decades
later, Noble would recall
that upon their arrival,
the city “consisted of a
few unpretentious dwellings.”
His first permanent
home in Illinois was in
what is today Homer
Township, and while
young Noble attended
a rustic country school
there, he spent most of
his time working on his
father’s farm. He later
found work driving teams
of oxen, knowledge of
which came in handy in
1852, when as an 18-yearold,
Noble worked as a
teamster for the Rock
Island Railroad Company,
which at that time was
finishing its line through
the newly-born Mokena.
For his labors, he earned
$1.25 for each twelvehour
workday.
Just as the new community
was being born,
Noble heard the siren’s
call of California, and so
it was that he set upon
the western trail in the
spring of 1852 to seek
gold. Completing the trek
with his brother Wright
and a span of mules, along
the way they and their
caravan were attacked by
native Pawnees a total of
three times. Much later
in his life, in what was a
massive understatement,
it was related that “all
considered it wonderful
that they escaped being
massacred.” Noble got to
Sacramento in one piece,
and ultimately spent two
years in the Golden State
before heading back home
to Illinois.
In the summer of 1855,
he tied the knot with a
long lady named Clarissa
Farley in Indiana. The
same year, as a sign of
the good business prospects
in the new town,
Noble and his brother-inlaw
Cyrus Cross built and
then ran a steam-powered
flour and saw mill in
Mokena. Unfortunately,
fate didn’t smile on the
project, and it failed
before long. In the aftermath
of this downfall, he
stuck with what he knew.
The next western adventure
began in 1858, when
Noble was hired to run
a sawmill in Atchison,
Kansas. Eventually Clarissa
and their child came
to live with him.
After the exploring of
his early years, all roads
led back to Mokena, and
Noble hung up his hat
here permanently around
1864, during the trying
years of the Civil War.
Soon thereafter, he began
buying up grain from area
farmers and shipping it to
Chicago markets over the
railroad. Counting some
success in this endeavor,
Noble founded an implement
business in town in
1867, which went on to
flourish in the 1870s, selling
reaping and mowing
machines.
During this era, he built
a serene house on Second
Street for his growing
family, which came to include
six children. The eldest
was Charles H. Jones,
who distinguished himself
as the young editor of
the Mokena Advertiser
until his untimely death
in 1877 at the age of 20.
Other members of Noble
and Clarissa Jones’ family
were their son Edward,
and daughters Emma,
Belle and Bertha.
A major turning point
in Noble’s life came in
1878, when he acquired a
seat on the Chicago Board
of Trade, where he once
again worked in the grain
market. He was an early
commuter to the city; a
contemporary described
him going hither and
thither “like clockwork,”
establishing a tradition
that is still followed by
countless Mokenians
today. Possessed of “a jovial
and friendly nature,”
Noble was elected mayor
of the village twice; his
first term was served
between 1884 and 1890,
while his second began
in 1894, before he finally
resigned in 1896. While
in office, he oversaw such
projects as the choosing
of a central location for
the town fire engine and
jail, and the planting of
trees on Mokena’s public
square, among others.
Noble breathed his last
on Dec. 22, 1909, and
was interred at the historic
Marshall Cemetery just
west of town. His passing
was profoundly felt in
Mokena, with the village’s
correspondent to the Joliet
Weekly News eulogizing
that “his purpose in
life seemed to do all the
good he could to everyone
else.” Thus was the life of
Noble Jones, one of the
most captivating people to
call our village home.
play
From Page 17
“Today, I play a southern
belle who is not satisfied
with her home life,”
she said. “She is looking
for an outlet to find freedom
and herself in a new
way. This is the biggest
role I’ve ever had. To play
Maggie and see the world
through her eyes has been
interesting. My mom
would say I’m a little like
Maggie. She’s not afraid
to use her voice. She
makes herself heard, and I
admire that about her.”
For D’Ortenzio, the
play was a way to give
back to the community.
Audience members donated
cans of food, boxes
of macaroni and cheese,
and other items, and all
proceeds went to the
Frankfort Township Food
Pantry.
“I have a donation
bucket; we’re selling
tea,” D’Ortenzio said.
“This whole entire process
is to help the community.
There is no better
way to bring the community
together than through
beautiful words.”
Deconstructed egg rolls
make meal rotation cut
Beth Krooswyk
Contributing Columnist
Type “egg roll in
a bowl” into a
browser, and you’ll
be rewarded with lots of
recipe variations. It’s a
concept that many people
have put their own spin on
out there in Internetland.
Just in case you haven’t
heard of it, this week I
want to share one of those
versions, no deep frying
required.
My high school friend
Julie, who lives near Indianapolis,
posted pictures
of this meal a while back,
and so I asked her for the
recipe.
But then I forgot about it.
When she mentioned
this dish again recently, I
smacked my head — OK,
not really — and decided I
really needed to try it out.
I’m not one for making
too many Asian-inspired
recipes, but I am one
for eating them, and this
recipe is so simple and
tasty that it will be on our
recipe rotation from now
on.
Egg Roll Bowls
Ingredients
• 1 pound ground pork (or turkey or beef)
• 4 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
• 1 large onion, coarsely chopped
• 1 tablespoon sesame oil (olive oil works too)
• Pinch of sea salt
• 14 ounces shredded fresh coleslaw mix
• 1 cup (or more) pea pods or snap peas
• 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced (or 1 teaspoon
ground ginger)
• 3 tablespoons tamari (or soy) sauce
• 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
• Sliced green onions for garnish, if desired
• Toasted sesame seeds for garnish, if desired
• 4 cups cooked rice, if desired
Directions
If serving with rice, get that started. I cook mine in
the microwave: 2 cups rice and 4 cups water in a
large covered Pyrex dish on high for 5-6 minutes,
then at 50 percent power for 15-17 minutes or until
water is absorbed.
In a Dutch oven pot, brown meat with 2 cloves
garlic, half the onion, plus the oil and salt.
Stir into the pot: fresh coleslaw mix, remaining
fresh onion and garlic, fresh (or ground) ginger, pea
pods, tamari sauce and rice vinegar. Cook until
coleslaw is wilted down.
Serve over rice, if desired. Top with green onions
and sesame seeds, if desired.
This deconstructed egg roll takes little effort or time to
prepare. Beth Krooswyk/22nd Century Media
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Carly Alvers
Mokena resident Carly
Alvers is a sophomore infielder
on the Lincoln-Way
Central softball team.
How long have you
played softball and
how did you get
started?
I started playing softball
when I was 7 years old at
the Mokena Park District. I
played there for two years
and then I got into travel
ball with the Mokena Blast
and then the Blue Wave.
Now, I’m on the Sparks.
What do you like most
about the sport?
The challenges and the
competition I get to face
along the way. Also, making
friendships that will
last a lifetime.
What’s your favorite
softball memory so
far?
Making the varsity team
at Lincoln-Way Central as
a freshman. There are so
many talented players at
our school, so just to make
the team as a freshman
was a huge accomplishment.
Then making allconference
and all-state
were huge honors, too.
What was like it
playing right away as
a freshman?
To be honest, I was
really nervous in the beginning,
but all the girls
were so welcoming, and
they boosted my confidence.
What advice would
you give to current
freshmen?
I’d say cherish every
moment you have because
you’ll never play with that
exact same team again.
Never take softball for
granted. It could end any
time, so play your heart
out every game.
Do you have any
superstitions?
Before every game, I
have to put on the same
perfume. I’ve been doing
this since I was 12 years
old and I feel like if I don’t
have it, I’m not going to do
well. I also have to wear
the same headband and my
lucky bow.
If you could be anyone
else for a day, who
would you want to
be?
Definitely Kris Bryant.
I’d want to see how he
Photo submitted
works every day. He’s such
a good baseball player and
I love watching him play
every game. It’d be cool to
put myself in his shoes.
Do you have a
favorite TV show?
Definitely “Grey’s Anatomy.”
The show keeps me
guessing and I learn a lesson
about anatomy every
single episode. I can’t go
a day without watching it.
Who would you pay to
see in concert?
I really like Taylor
Swift. I went to her concert
last year and it was such an
amazing experience. I’d
definitely see her again.
Do you have any
hidden talents?
I can guess the title of
any song within like five
seconds. When me and my
friends are in the car, we
play a game to see who
can guess the song and I
win every time.
LW Central grad enjoys Team USA shot
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Lincoln-Way Central
graduate and New Lenox native
Jazmin Malinowski has
played hockey nearly her
entire life, and she grew up
imagining herself one day
playing for Team USA.
“I used to always dream
about playing for an Olympic
team,” Malinowski said. “I
grew up watching [Sandburg
graduate and Olympic hockey
player] Kendall Coyne
[Schofield] and playing with
her,” Malinowski said. “Then
watching what she was able
to accomplish, I was like,
‘Whoa, I want to do that.’
I made it a goal to work my
hardest and get there.”
Malinowski still has Olympic
aspirations, but in March
she got her first taste of what
it’s like to represent her country
in international competition.
Now a junior goaltender
at McKendree University
in downstate Lebanon, Malinowski
was chosen to play
on the United States team in
the World University Games
in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
“The whole thing started to
develop last year,” Malinowski
said. “My dad [Rich] told
me to make sure I was ready
to play, make sure I hit the
gym and was playing at my
best, because they’d be picking
players for the team.
“In practice, I made sure
I stopped like every single
puck. I wanted to be at my
best to have a chance to make
the team. Waiting to see if
I’d make the team was really
nerve- wracking.”
College coaches were able
to nominate players for the
team, and a selection committee
then invited players based
on their evaluations of their
play with their college teams.
Malinowski got the call in
January informing her she was
Lincoln-Way Central graduate Jazmin Malinowski and fellow goaltender Hannah Stone don
their Team USA jerseys before a game at the World University Games in March in Krasnoyarsk,
Russia. Photo submitted.
one of two goalies chosen.
“When I got the confirmation,
that was really cool,” she
said. “My family was so excited
for me.”
Putting on a Team USA
jersey for the first time was a
moment Malinowski said she
will never forget.
“It was really cool to see
my last name on the back and
USA on the front,” she said.
“It was such an honor.”
The United States went 2-5
at the tournament and finished
fourth. Malinowski was in the
net for at least part of both
wins. She played the whole
way in a 5-2 win over Switzerland,
making 19 saves, and
split time with fellow goalie
Hannah Stone in a 6-1 victory
over China.
She also played in a 10-0
loss to a high-powered Russian
team.
“Playing against Switzerland,
it was a little bit faster
than what I was used to, and
then going from that game to
the Russia game, it was like a
whole jump up to another level,”
Malinowski said. “It was
fun to play against those girls
and get that experience. They
were so fast, so skilled. It was
like they were either going to
score or I was going to have to
make an amazing save.”
Malinowski said the trip
was her first time in a country
besides the United States and
Canada.
“The whole experience was
really cool,” she said. “Russia
was really interesting to visit.
The food was really different,
the culture was like a shock
for me. It was really fun getting
to play there, though.”
Malinowski was adopted
when she was 3 years old.
Her parents, Rich and Erin,
were both hockey players and
coaches. Rich played at Marquette
and Erin at Illinois.
Shortly after she was adopted,
when she was only 3 or
4, Malinowski began playing
hockey.
“I was kind of a natural
when I learned how to skate,
and then I wanted hockey gear
right away,” she said. “I knew
I wanted to be a goalie.”
It wasn’t always easy carving
out a path to be a women’s
hockey player. Malinowski
played on boys teams until
she was 12. After a couple
years with the Chicago Mission
girls team, she spent most
of her high school years playing
for the Milwaukee Junior
Admirals girls team.
“I’d have to leave school,
do my homework in the car,
sleep in the car,” she said. “It
was different growing up than
most people. I wouldn’t get
home until maybe 10 every
night. I’m glad I had those experiences,
though.
THREE LOCAL TEAMS
ON LONG WINNING
STREAKS
1. LW co-op girls
lacrosse
Lincoln-Way remained
undefeated
and picked up its
12th straight win,
beating District 230
16-13 on April 29.
Caroline Behrens
(above) scored seven
goals.
2. Providence softball
The Celtics broke a
school record with
their 17th straight
victory, a 19-2 rout
of Trinity, on May 1.
Maggie Joutras had
five RBIs. Providence
also clinched at least
a share of the GCAC
Red title with the win.
3. LW Central softball
The Knights extended
their winning
streak to 13 with
an 8-0 shutout of
crosstown rival LW
West on May 2 at the
Rosemont Dome.
Amanda Weyh
tossed a complete
game shutout and
Sydney Grein drove
in three runs.
Just an inning into its
May 1 game at crosstown
rival Providence, Lincoln-
Way Central found itself
down five runs.
Celtics ace and Arizona
State recruit Bryce Barnett
was on the mound.
It was not an enviable
position for the Knights
to be in. In fact, it’s a spot
junior catcher Liam Higgins
doesn’t think Central
could have dug itself out
of earlier in the season.
“Our biggest problem at
the beginning of the year is
when things went bad, we
got down on ourselves,”
Higgins said. “We’ve got
a lot of leadership that’s
developed since the beginning
of the year and now
we get down and we think,
‘We’re still in this game.’”
The Knights were certainly
still in it against the
Celtics. They answered
with nine runs in the second
inning, knocking Barnett
out early, and romped
to a 16-6 win in five innings.
“We go down five,
they’ve got their ace going,
we could’ve quit,” Central
coach Mitch Nowicki said.
“But we didn’t. We had the
big second inning and just
built from there.”
It was a stunning turn
of events for Providence
coach Mark Smith.
“We came out with
five runs, felt really good
about it, had our guy on
LISTEN UP
“It was really cool to see my last name on the back and
USA on the front. It was such an honor.”
Lincoln-Way Central senior Noah Cantleberry
earned the win in relief May 1 as the Knights topped
Providence 16-6.
the mound,” Smith said.
“That’s the first time
in four years I’ve seen
(Barnett) struggle with
his command, but he’ll
bounce back and he’ll be
fine.
“It was just one of those
games where we couldn’t
get them out, and offensively
we haven’t been
putting up enough runs
to be able to keep up in a
game like this.”
While the Knights’ offense
caught fire, senior
lefty Noah Cantleberry
was brilliant in relief.
Cantleberry came into
the game with just one out
recorded in the bottom of
the first. The Celtics (13-
11) led 5-0 and had the
bases loaded for the top of
its lineup.
Cantleberry got a strikeout
and a groundout to
escape the jam and set the
Tune In
stage for the Knights (14-
8) to come back.
“My mindset was just
to go in, throw strikes, get
ahead of hitters,” Cantleberry
said. “I feel like we
got some momentum that
did carry over a lot. After
that inning, we really came
together as a team, put up
nine runs.”
Cantleberry threw 3 2/3
innings, allowing one run
on two hits while striking
out seven, to get the win.
Central’s offense then
exploded, with a big boost
from the bottom of the
lineup.
The first seven Knights
hitters of the second inning
reached base against
Barnett. Central had one
run in and the bases loaded
when Higgins, the No. 8
hitter, came up.
He smoked a 3-0 pitch
down the right-field line to
drive in two runs and make
it 5-3.
“At the beginning of
the year, I was taking 3-0
pitches, and (Nowicki)
told me, ‘Liam, you’ve got
to swing on 3-0,’” Higgins
said. “That was my first
swing of the year on 3-0.
I knew he was struggling
with his control on offspeed
pitches, and I knew
he was going to throw me
a fastball for a strike because
he didn’t want to
load the bases.”
Riley Murphy followed
with a RBI single.
“It was great,” Nowicki
said. “Liam gets a 3-0 fastball,
huge double. Riley
gets another RBI. When
you get production from
the guys in 7-8-9 spots, it
lights the fire for the rest of
the team.”
Kyle Labedz (3-for-4)
and the Knights jumped
on top with RBI singles
from Ryan Kraft and Johnny
McGuire, and a tworun
base hit from Turner
Doran.
The Knights put up another
crooked number in
the fifth inning, scoring six
times to go up by 10.
Doran drove in three
runs, while Labedz, Kraft,
McGuire, Higgins and
Murphy each had two
RBIs. Every batter in the
Knights’ lineup had at
least one hit.
Barnett and Brennan
Geers had two RBIs each
to lead Providence, while
Jake Messelmann and Jake
Mucha each drove in one
run.
“Tip your cap to them,”
Smith said. “They swung
the bats, they hit the heck
out of it, they came in here
and kicked our butts.”
