Athlete of the Week

10 Questions

with Carly Alvers

Mokena resident Carly

Alvers is a sophomore infielder

on the Lincoln-Way

Central softball team.

How long have you

played softball and

how did you get

started?

I started playing softball

when I was 7 years old at

the Mokena Park District. I

played there for two years

and then I got into travel

ball with the Mokena Blast

and then the Blue Wave.

Now, I’m on the Sparks.

What do you like most

about the sport?

The challenges and the

competition I get to face

along the way. Also, making

friendships that will

last a lifetime.

What’s your favorite

softball memory so

far?

Making the varsity team

at Lincoln-Way Central as

a freshman. There are so

many talented players at

our school, so just to make

the team as a freshman

was a huge accomplishment.

Then making allconference

and all-state

were huge honors, too.

What was like it

playing right away as

a freshman?

To be honest, I was

really nervous in the beginning,

but all the girls

were so welcoming, and

they boosted my confidence.

What advice would

you give to current

freshmen?

I’d say cherish every

moment you have because

you’ll never play with that

exact same team again.

Never take softball for

granted. It could end any

time, so play your heart

out every game.

Do you have any

superstitions?

Before every game, I

have to put on the same

perfume. I’ve been doing

this since I was 12 years

old and I feel like if I don’t

have it, I’m not going to do

well. I also have to wear

the same headband and my

lucky bow.

If you could be anyone

else for a day, who

would you want to

be?

Definitely Kris Bryant.

I’d want to see how he

Photo submitted

works every day. He’s such

a good baseball player and

I love watching him play

every game. It’d be cool to

put myself in his shoes.

Do you have a

favorite TV show?

Definitely “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The show keeps me

guessing and I learn a lesson

about anatomy every

single episode. I can’t go

a day without watching it.

Who would you pay to

see in concert?

I really like Taylor

Swift. I went to her concert

last year and it was such an

amazing experience. I’d

definitely see her again.

Do you have any

hidden talents?

I can guess the title of

any song within like five

seconds. When me and my

friends are in the car, we

play a game to see who

can guess the song and I

win every time.
