BT Buzz Breastfeeding minimises eczema risks? Children who were breastfed exclusively in their first few months of life were less likely to develop eczema, a new study finds. For the study, researchers analyzed data on the health, development and dietary patterns of 1,520 children in the United States who were followed from birth as part of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II, led by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S> Food and Drug Administration. By the time they were 6, about 300 of the children had been diagnosed with eczema at some point in their lives. Nearly six in 10 of those kids had the inflammatory skin disease at age 6, the findings showed. Children in wealthier families and those with a family history of food allergies were more likely to have been diagnosed with eczema by age 6, the investigators found. But the researchers said that children who were exclusively breastfed for at least three months were only 48 percent as likely to have continued eczema at age 6, compared with those who were never breastfed or who were breastfed for less than three months. Intestinal bacteria growth in pregnant women Researchers found that progesterone regulates the microbial composition during pregnancy in a way that may facilitate appropriate transmission of beneficial species to the newborn. These bacteria “sense” pregnancy and “understand” the need to move to the next generation in order to assist babies in breaking down the sugar in mother’s milk. Gestation is accompanied by alterations in the microbiome -- bacteria that live inside and on our body and weigh over four pounds of our body weight and are important in health and in fighting disease. Previous research that focused on changes in the microbiome showed that during pregnancy it is partially responsible for weight gain and for essential inflammatory response. However, the mechanisms driving these changes are unknown. Better way to treat severe epileptic seizures in children Emergency medicine doctors now have a better way to treat severe epileptic seizures in children, thanks to a New Zealand-Australian study. Prolonged epileptic seizures are the most common neurological emergency in children seen by hospitals. The seizures are potentially fatal: up to five percent of affected children die, and a third suffer long-term complications from brain damage. Crucially, the longer the seizure, the greater the chance of long-term complications. The study - which will change management of this condition internationally - was published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet in April. It was led by Professor Stuart Dalziel from the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland and Starship Children’s Hospital, and the senior author was Professor Franz Babl at Melbourne’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
