TOP: The Indian Scout John Shope „Signature Series“ by Kuryakyn transform the stock „Scout“ into a great little
Café Custom, depending which parts are used. On Marcel Masaryk‘s, fairing, fenders and chin spoiler are mounted.
The 2019 Season is starting strong and the first inand
outdoor events have been held in Europe and
the USA. Even more important: Custom Chrome
Europe has introduced its 2019 Catalogue – Edition
#48 in an almost 50 years business history. While the
1.728 strong 40.000 products mega-catalogue offers
everything for Harley-Davidson, Indian and Custombike
builders, riders and enthusiasts, here‘s a small
extract what the new CCE catalogue has to offer for
the dedicated Café Racer and Dirt Track style customizer.
Both styles have become extremely popular
in the last years, and Custom Chrome Europe has
commissioned several „Bolt On And Ride“ bikes
fitting the theme – some of them even „crossover“
themed rides, often based on „Sportster“ models.
With CUSTOMBIKE, Intermot, EICMA, Motor Bike
Expo, Polish Custom Show and Daytona Bike Week
now behind us, it is quite clear that Europe is now
leading in both „Café Racer“ customizing and „Dirt
Track“ style. The ace series might be run across the
USA, but the customs themed to it are seen here:

TOP: Customized by Rick‘s Motorcycles, the „Black Bob“ was based on a Twin Cam Dyna and used the popular
Arlen Ness „Café Racer“ handlebar fairing as known from „Sons of Anarchy“. Motogadget „M-Blaze“
indicators and Fehling Superbike handlebar add to the look and rideability. While the look is more „Dragstyle“,
it‘s the number of „Café Racer“ style parts that are utilized to create this ride that make it stand out.
The idea to individualize a motorcycle is most probably
as old as the motorcycle itself – as soon as
the first-ever motorcycle-owner adjusted seat-height
or handlebar position to his needs, he „customized“
his or her motorcycle. While in the dawn of motorcycling,
the motorcycle was primarily a daily matter of
transport, in the twenties they also became an object
of design and fashion. Two of the most magnificent
examples are the French 1928 „Majestic“ and
the Syracuse-manufactured „Ner-a-car“ which also
share the idea of a hub-steered front wheel. While
racing on dirt has been performed as the first form
of motorcycle racing – either on the unpaved roads
of the time or on oval horse tracks already existing,
the first Café Racer could also be dated back to a
surprising 100 years history: By todays standards,
George Brought‘s motorcycles – handcrafted and
taylor-made of the highest quality standards since
1919 – would certainly qualify as the World‘s first
„Café Racer. Likewise (to show how standards are

The origin of the name „Café Racer“ dates back to
the late fifties and early sixties: Rock ’n’ Roll was hitting
a post-war Great Britain in which motorcycles
were still a daily matter of transport, but more people
could afford small cars and handed their bikes over
to their kids, growing up with the music of Elvis, Little
Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and their
British equivalents Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard.
When the „Teddy Boys“ became motorized, they
soon turned „Rocker“ – and their bikes, the „madein-Britain“
singles that had taken their fathers and
grandfathers to war and work, were soon modified

where the teenagers and young motorheads of
the time met: At the next Café or pub. Unlike today,
where cellphones are the „medium“ to connect and
stay in touch with friends, this place was somewhat
reserved for mofa‘s, mopeds and motorcycles well
into the Nineties. Thus the birth of the Café Racer
from Brit-bike origin came for several reasons: Cheap
singles were available en masse – and popular
with the riders. Neither Harley-Davidson‘s nor Indian
had anything lightweight and nimble to offer at the
time, the latter brand folded to the mismanagement
and lack of new and reliable products in 1953 and
– even more important: Harley-Davidson (and other
US motorcycles) were banned from being imported
to the UK until 1957 to protect the British motorcycle
industry after World War II. History often has strange
ways to repeat itself...

are several levels above the budget
young customizers and riders can afford for a customized
motorcycle. When AMF-Harley-Davidson finally
jumped the „Cafè Racer“ style with the 1977/78
XLCR „Café Racer“, the stylish Sportster flopped miserably
for several reasons: Not just had the train left
the station about one teenager-generation ago and
neither horsepower nor the weight was what would
then characterize a nimble and fast sportbike. Worse
even: The price tag would have many XLCR‘s,
especially in Europe, standing lazy in the Dealer‘s
showrooms well into the Eighties. Look into any national

kept the „spirit“ alive was that many British cities, in
particular London with its nightmare traffic, had a several
thousand rider strong Dispatch Rider scene,
transporting artwork, letters and small packets from
office to office. On small, handy and quick motorcycles.
On weekends they burned the remaining rubber
from their tires at Chelsea Bridge and for the weekend
they swapped their top-case equipped bikes and
the Barbour or Belstaff suit for leather jackets and
a Café Racer. In the Seventies, certain attributes of
the original „Café Racer“ style have slowly merged

ALL IMAGES: The LSL „Urban“ headlight gives the 21st century look. It has been created for „Streetfighter“ type

not necessarily means living in the past ...“. The stylish headlight is available for many fork diameters and different
Harley model lines. It is also used for other brands.
Z1R of 1977 are certainly trend-setting designs,
based on the „core values“ of a Café Racer: Small
fairing/(wind)shield, streamlined tail end, often a single-seater
and low, sportbike-style riding position,
using clip-on or M-shape sportbike handlebars. Optional
a small spoiler and oil-cooler – and hardcore
riders would use rearwards mounted foot controls. In
some respects, the 1980 introduced (and 2018 reintroduced)
Suzuki „Katana“ could be viewed as a
modernized version of the „Café Racer“ and shares
a surprizing history with Harley-Davidson‘s last Ironhead-powered
design study: Both were designed by
Hans A. Muth, who also was responsible for the R 90
S. Mocked as „Katana Glide“, the design never went
into production and the remains of Harley‘s last Ironhead
Café Racer are unknown. It was then up to Eric
Buell to „outsource“ the theme of a Harley-powered
Sportbike until his business folded in 2009.

THE EUROPEAN WAY: CafÉ & DIRT TRACK STYLE
What has been seen in the last 5 years is confirmed
by last years and this years shows and fairs: „Café
Racer“ and „Dirt Track“ styles are THE hot topic in
customizing. Custombikes, design studies and stock
motorcycles occupy the style – many electric motorcycles
adapt design components too. Indian‘s FTR

examples that made the covers in winter 2018/19,
but there are more bikes that could be mentioned

Coffee to GO: Daytona CafÉ & DIRT TRACK STYLE
Daytona 2019 saw a surprising lack of Café Racer
and Dirt Track styled bikes, which is also to be contributed
to the lack of visiting bikes and a general
decline in participation at the bike shows. Only Indian
had some „Factory Customs“ displayed at their
Main Street exhibition, featurinng a very radical
„111“ powered Café Racer. A lot of traditional parts
could be found at the swap meets and antique bike
meetings, which said a lot! While AMA Flat Track
racing on the Speedway attracted many visitors, the
follow-up by the manufacturers remains slow.

which became top-sellers in the program. Especially
Sportster-based BOAR-bikes were converted to
Café Racers, starting with the 883 Sporty that first
was equipped with a Streetfighter style headlight,
followed by transformation into the „Coffee Racer“
by Harley-Factory Frankfurt. In 2013 Rick‘s Motorcycle
converted a 2009 „Street Bob“ ito the „Black Bob“
– and the TGS-built „Speedfreak“ and Fred Kodlin‘s
2016 „Sportlin“ will forever be remembered as stylish
Café Racers by those who rode them. Other BOAR-
Sporties would qualify as „Cross-Over“, starting with
the „Custom Crawler“ of Benno‘s Custom Road in
Bad Camberg. Located in the Taunus mountains
between Frankfurt am Main, Lahn and Rhine river,
narrow motorcycle roads invite for a ride, no matter
it you‘re aboard a „Café Racer“, Super Moto or Dirt
Track styled bike. The „Custom Crawler“ combined
all three styles in one superb rider as did the 2018
„H9 Sporty“, modified by „Hard Nine Choppers“ Danny
Schneider from a XL 883 „Iron“ from Swiss topdealer
Baechli Harley-Heaven. With a Kodlin „Cafe

many Roland Sands Design parts, the „H9“ was one
of the most used BOAR rides of the 2018 season!

That the „Café Racer“ has a great future is visible in
many „stock“ models recently introduced: At Intermot

the small fairing and „Café Racer“ look. Even those
who take on the challenge of re-writing motorcycle
history with electrical motors. Harley-Davidson‘s
„Live Wire“ first and foremost look like a 21st century
version of a Café Racer...
´ ´ ´
What today is christened as „Dirt Track style“ has
been a small niche in customizing, one that, more
than others. does combine „look“ with „performance“
in terms of suspension and power. Political correct
would be the term „Flat Track“ style, as most customs
built under this „banner“ have a reference to the
American AMA Flat Track Series, for decades dominated
by Harley-Davidson‘s XR 750 V-Twins. From
the early day of motorcycle racing on horse tracks,
„Flat Track“ events in the US can be traced back into
the Teens and Twenties, then founded AMA created
the „A-class“ for professional Flat Track racing.
In Europe, Speedway racing became more popular
but after World War II soon developed in a highly
specialized motorsport using Methanol-powered
500 cc single cylinders, soon creating a league of its
own. With the same lightweight British singles and
twins that were the base for the first „Café Racer“
type customs came another type of motorcycle: The
„Scrambler“. In part street bike, moto cross, enduro
and trial bike, „Scramblers“ wer identified by mild or
full scale off-road tires, high mounted exhaust systems
and additional ground clearance, often featuring
engine protection skid plates, Moto-Cross/Enduro-style
headplates and suspension components
to offer a riding option „off the beaten path“. Popular
racing events like the „Six Days“ Enduro racing and
the AMA Grand Championships made this motorcycle
design popular with all brands, so did the movies:
Although performed on a customized Triumph TR6
Trophy, not the SC he later raced in the International
Six Days Enduro Trials of 1964, Steve McQueen‘s
„Great Escape“ jump in the movie of 1963 did much
more for motorcycle Scrambler sales as hundreds
of trophies could do! By the end of the Sixties,
most motorcycle manufacturers had „Scrambler“
off-springs from the „Sport“ or „Touring“ models for
sale: Harley-Davidson in the „lightweight“ program
they offered – while running experimental Sportster
Enduros in the Baja-California Enduro races and developing
a „secret weapon“ for an upcoming 1969
rule change in AMA Flat Track Racing. However, as
often forgotten (or glossed over by Harley-friendly historians),
by the beginning of the model year 1969,
actually end of 1968, Harley-Davidson had reached
the end of the line, only to be rescued by money-injection
from American Machine Foundry (AMF) who
in the following years provided a new production facility
as well as the necessary money to develop new
model, one of which soon would become a legend in
Flat Track Racing: The XR 750. American Flat Track

Surprise: A French XLCR

Flat Track: XR 1200
No other than legendary Flat Track Racer Scott Parker
rode the XR 1200 onto the Intermot stage in September
2006. It took almost two years to bring the XR 1200 to the
dealerships, first in Europe, then in the US. As with the
XR 1000 of 1983, Harley-Davidson had over-estimated
the demand for a „stock“ XR lookalike – the XR 1200 has
very little in common with the race bike it depicts – and
despite good performance on the curvy roads of Europe,
more like Super Moto than Flat Track, the XR 1200 never
reached the sales numbers that were expected. Too
many compromises had been made in the styling – and
few customizers „radicalized“ the bike as it should have.

Daytona 2017 saw the premiere of Kuryakyn‘s new „Riot“

step beside the „bling“ image of Kuryakyn‘s shiny chrome
parts, this is „something completely different“, also signaled
by the look of the ride: raw metal surface rather
than metal-flake / candy apple paintjob – a Sportster
„Forty-Eight“ that signals a rough-tough approach to customizing,
as common with today‘s young and wild customizers,
those which would hardly think twice about
even opening the Kuryakyn catalogue. Now is the time
to attack, pardon me, RIOT around a little bit. Custom
Chrome Europe continues to distribute the full line of Kuryakyn

Top Secret: The AMF water-cooled
MX Revolution
Few of todays Harley-riders have an idea how widespread
the program of lightweight and 2-stroke Harley‘s was in
the Sixties and Seventies, thanks to the cooperation with
Aermacchi in Varese/Italy. This prototype of a 1977 water-cooled
Moto Crosser, planned to substitute the aircooled
MX 250 Racer – which was only in production for
one year – never made it into production. well, not as a
Harley-Davidson! When Harley/AMF sold Aermacchi, the
design was the resulting new motorcycle manufacturer
Cagiva which had great success with water-cooled Moto
Cross racers. But it was AMF money that boosted this
development: Before, water-cooling for Moto Cross racers
was thought to be impractical, if not impossible.

the third most popular SPORT, as it has been in the
Eighties. It took Harley more than a year from introduction
to delivering the first XR‘s updated again in
2010 to XR 1200 X, but sales of the model remained
shallow, forcing its discontinuation after the 2013
model year. Which made it last longer than XLCR
and XR 1000 combined...
´ ´ ´
Of course, the XR 1200 did compete with Eric Buells
sportbikes with which it shared the almost identical
powerful motor – and Eric was not shy to introduce
his own „Enduro/Touring“ offspring, the „Ulysses“. All
Buell models, the XR 1200 and a huge number of
Sportsters of all model years form a huge base of
potential (and powerful!) „Flat Track“ style custombikes,
as CCE‘s dealers have proved over and over
again in the last two decades – and certainly will
continue to do from the pages of catalogue #«48.
´ ´ ´
The 2013 „Custom Cross“ by Independent Choppers
of Duesseldorf was one of the most trend-setting and
radical custombikes of the 2013 BOAR year. The
bike would have qualified as Dirt-Bike as well as Flat
Track style, with a touch of „Old School“: Sportster
„Knucklehead“ style covers and Kustom Tech controls
with wrapped exhaust competed with spoke
wheels and off-road tires. „Custom Cross“ was able
to master „heavy dirt“ sections and did so several
times when touring with the CCE staff: In the countryside
behind Saint Tropez, the Grand Canyon du
Verdon and Czech Republic.
´ ´ ´
In 2014, the „Custom Crawler“ marked a stylish Enduro/Super
Moto/Flat Track/Café Racer hybrid that
combined these often contrary styles very good in
one motorcycle that also was great fun to ride. As
with so many cool Custom Sporties, the stock „Peanut“
tank limited range and fun time for the ride, but
Benno‘s Custom Road did even trick the stock tank
into an NSU-lookalike!
´ ´ ´
Exchange the JW Speaker headlight against a more
„Flat Track“ style headlight/Number plate combination,
add a skid plate under the engine and CCE‘s
BOAR Scout „Spyke“ would certainly qualify as a
little Flat Track Bobber: It‘s performance certainly
did! And the BSL „Drag Race Bomb“ with „outline“
welding seems style subsequently became a topseller.
But in 2017, Harley-Davidson Wuerzburg
blew everybody´s mind with the stylish „Sporty Spice“
which again crossed several design lines and
broke rules: Partially Super Moto, part Flat Tracker,
the 883 Iron utilized the latest in EMD and Roland
Sands parts, the „Flat Track“ touch added by Rick‘s
Motorcycles tail end and Cult Werk spoiler and fender.
The riding performance was upgraded by ODC‘s
„Roma“ upside-down fork. Recently put up for sale by
Harley-Davidson Wuerzburg Village, „Sporty Spice“
was a Sportster published in almost every European
Country, also with many touring related features that
boosted the popularity of the style.
´ ´ ´
Probably the closest „Flat Track“ replica ever followed
for the 2018 BOAR year: The „H9 Sporty“ by
Danny Schneider was a success from the premiere
at Motor Bike Expo 2018 and a great ride too. Swissbased
„Hard Nine Choppers“ modified the cool „Flat
Track“ Sporty from a 883 „Iron“ by Swiss top-dealer
Baechli Harley-Heaven. This time, a CCE 3.3 Gallon
tank would provide sufficient range and „fun time“
and RevTech wheels added a lot of style. Again, Fred
Kodlin‘s sheet metal „Café Racer“ tailed would serve
the „Flat Track“ style, so did the BSL „Drager Drag“
stainless steel pipes and several RSD components.
´ ´ ´
With the new parts added in the 2018/19 winter season
– plus the added popularity of the AMA „Flat
Track Racing“ series where Harley-Davidson and Indian
battle it out again, both manufacturers came up
with new models that with fuel both „Café Racer“ and
„Flat Track“ styles: The 500/750 „Street“ and „Street
Rod“ models by Harley-Davidson and the 2018 premiere
FT 1200 by Indian, introduced in Cologne,
then expanded with already three different FT style
options at EICMA 2018, both themes are here to
stay – and likely to increase in popularity! Often forgotten
is the fact that not just Harley and Indian race
for trophies in the AMA Flat Track Series: Japanese
and European manufacturers always played a part
in this series – and they certainly do in „Flat Track“
and Café Racer customizing. The first events this
year have approved that – and who has any doubts
should open the new Custom Chrome Europe catalogue:
You will find what you need to build a great
Flat Tracker of Café Racer – and more!

Café & Dirt: CCE‘s new catalogue offers multiple options!
Tips and trends from the 2018/19 show season, already integrated in CCE‘s catalogue #48!
In 2018/19, Custom Chrome Europe celebrates the 10th riding season of the theme and slogan that has somewhat revolutionized the
European custom scene: „Bolt On And Ride“. With the new catalogue #48, a massive introduction of more than 4.000 parts has been performed.
This „Special Feature“ reminisces on the history of the Café Racer and „Dirt Track“ styles and its recent popularity, especially with
the younger builders all over Europe. The products from the current CCE catalogue represent only a small fraction of typical „Café Racer“
or „Dirt Track“ components available, but they represent those that are essential for creating the style. And surprising number of them has
already been „road-tested“ by the CCE team.
