KHON KAEN, THE CITY OF GOLDEN SHOWER FLOWERS AND BAMBOO MUSIC,
IS A HARMONIOUS BLEND OF TRADITION AND MODERNITY THAT BOASTS EXCEPTIONAL
HANDICRAFTS. IT IS THE NORTHEAST’S BUSINESS HUB AND IDEAL FOR A VACATION.
THE PROVINCE HAS PLENTY OF LOCAL DELICACIES AND SPLASHES OF SEASONAL COLOUR.
NATURAL ATTRACTIONS
The road from Khon Kaen Airport to the city
welcomes visitors with golden shower flowers in full
bloom. The golden shower is Thailand’s national
flower and Khon Kaen’s official symbol. From April
to May, the yellow flowers are in blossom, creating
beautiful scenery in the city.
The first destination on most visitors’ itinerary is
Phu Hin Chang See. Take highway 12 to Fang district,
then continue on rural road 5035 that leads to Phu
Hin Chang See, located inside Namphong National
Park. The park is a watershed forest that regularly
replenishes Ubolrat Dam. The scenic route along the
dam offers a glimpse into the way of living of locals
residing in waterfront communities.
The Phu Hin Chang See area has a scattering
of large rocks in bizarre shapes. Its name means
“elephant rubbing rocks” as the area occasionally
sees elephants coming in and rubbing against
these large rocks. The area also has a nature trail,
mineral licks, underground water and pre-historic rock
paintings. At the viewpoint, there’s a bridge spanning
several large rocks offering unusual views of the area
from above.
CULTURAL CENTRES
At the heart of Khon Kaen is Srichan Road that’s
bustling with life over Songkran. Bueng Kaen Nakhon
Lake is the province’s spiritual and recreational centre.
Around the reservoir, there are a number of attractions
including a statue of Khon Kaen’s 1 st ruler, Thao Phia
Muang Pan. The waterfront area is a haven of serenity
and peace in the morning and late afternoon when
locals go for jogging around the lake amid blooming
golden shower flowers. Across the lake is Phra Mahathat
Kaen Nakhon on the grounds of Wat Nong Wang.
The great stupa is a blend of Dvaravati and Indochinese
art as reflected in its 9 tiers that sit on a square base.
Khon Kaen is home to Khon Kaen University, which releases
creative forces from the new generation. The university’s Art
and Cultural Centre hosts rotating and permanent exhibitions
including one on Isaan textiles as befitting the city’s reputation as
“World Craft City for Mudmee (Ikat).”
FOOD AND BEVERAGES
One is spoiled for choice when it comes to food in Khon Kaen.
We stayed at Rachawadee Resort & Hotel, an environmentally
friendly hotel set in a beautiful locale. The hotel serves
international breakfast (Thai, Chinese and Western). The hotel’s
Italian restaurant, Vacca, is run by an Italian chef who cooks
incredibly tasty dishes to be enjoyed with great wines and other
drinks. For delicious Isaan food, head to Zab Nour Krua Isaan
restaurant. Its standout dishes include Somtam Lao, Moo Dad
Diew, Plaa Som Thod and Khao Suan Kwang grilled chicken.
Those enjoying spicy jaew hon or Isaan-style sukiyaki should make
a beeline for Tik Jaew Hon restaurant.
For a leisurely market walk in the late afternoon, Kham Hai
Market at Bueng Nong Khot is highly recommended with its
bewildering range of local dishes. It’s worth checking out Friday
Cafe & Bistro, a great place for whiling away the hours with tea,
coffee or dessert. The cafe has bare concrete walls with antiques
from worldwide among its furnishings. The café has a corner
displaying FREITAG bags from Switzerland, proof that tradition
and modernity exist side by side in Khon Kaen.
