Fan-bloody-tastic being midge free
• By Matt Slaughter
JANET PROFIT had been
battling a midge problem on her
property for 11 years.
Now, the Bromley resident
says she feels “fan-bloody-tastic”
to be midge-free.
Mrs Profit told Pegasus Post in
February midges were plaguing
her Shortland St section near
the Bromley wastewater treatment
plant’s oxidation ponds.
It was common for her dog to
come in covered in midges and
she couldn’t eat outside without
getting a mouthful of them.
She said she had been going
back and forth with the city
council for more than a decade
to try and fix the problem, but
nothing had worked until now.

Residents
call for plan
to reduce
traffic woes
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
HORNBY’S long-standing
transport woes are unlikely to end
anytime soon.
The city council confirmed it
currently has no projects planned,
in spite of residents calling for
congestion at peak times to be
alleviated.
The Greater Hornby Residents’
Association highlighted the issue
in its submission to the Annual
Plan, asking the city council
to invest more into its roading
infrastructure.
Chairman Marc Duff
said it wanted to see an
acknowledgement from the
city council that Hornby’s
traffic had increased significantly
since the February 22, 2011,
earthquake and to find out if
there was a plan in place to deal
with it.
But a city council spokesman
said while there are no specific
projects to date, it is monitoring
concerns and will develop
solutions if required.
“Some of the traffic through
Hornby central will drop with
the opening of the Christchurch
Southern Motorway Stage 2 by the
New Zealand Transport Agency,”
he said.

GREAT NEWS for long suffering Bromley
residents on page 1 today: The tide is
finally turning in the long running war
against the midges.
And Janet Profit can take a lot of the
credit for it.
Janet, who lives in Shortland St, has battled the city council
for years over the midges, which gather at the oxidation ponds -
and then cause havoc for residents nearby.
She has featured regularly in the Pegasus Post over the issue,
which in my humble view has kept the pressure on the city
council to come up with remedies.
To their credit the city council has. The $300,000 which goes
into fighting midges each year seems to be paying off.
A good result all round.

Call for better bird protection
• By Matt Slaughter
MORE NEEDS to be done to
protect birdlife around the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary.
The Avon-Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai Trust says dogs,
drones and
people continue
to be a threat
to the 118 bird
species, which
call the estuary
home, including
godwits.
Tim Lindley
The Coastal-
Burwood

investigate what it can do to better
protect these birds after trust
members expressed concerns at a
meeting last week
The estuary became part of the
East Asian-Australasian Flyway
network last year, a network,
which protects migratory waterbirds
across wetlands in about 20
countries.
Trust member Tim Lindley
said the birds, which used the
estuary faced threats that people
may have not been aware of.
“Birds do see dogs as wolves
. . . it’s quite important that
they’re not disturbed by dogs.”
Mr Lindley said the estuary’s

“The birds stop feeding for 10
minutes when they are interrupted
by humans.
“Because this international

only going to get worse.
“It’s dinner time for the
birds and we need to keep it
that way.”
Board members agreed the

people to be respectful of birds
when around the estuary needed
to be improved.
Board member Linda Stewart
suggested signage should give
more specific information on the
types of behaviour and activities
that disturbed birds and how
this could be avoided.

No more midges
•From page 1
“When we had those 29, 30 and
32 deg C days, we thought, here
we go . . . they’re not next door,
because I’ve checked with the
neighbour and she leaves the light
on at night time,” she said.
“The thing is, they’ve actually
disappeared.”
City council three waters and
waste operations manager Adam
Twose told the Coastal-Burwood
Community Board at its meeting
last week, midge numbers had
decreased by 36 per cent around
the Bromley oxidation ponds
compared to the midge season
last year.
Mrs Profit said though this
was hard to believe, she had seen
these results first-hand in the few
months since summer.
“If that’s working, keep going,”
she said. “Where they’ve gone, I
wouldn’t know.”
The reduction was a result of
the city council changing the
technique used to kill midges
around the oxidation ponds.
Mr Twose said midge dredging,
which involved mechanically
dragging chains across the pond
floor where the midge lay their
eggs, had been much more effective
than the strategy used
before, trying to kill midges using
chemicals.
He said dredging meant midges
were killed before they were born.
Mrs Profit said she was happy
for now, but would have to wait
until summer to see if midges
would return to her property.
“Maybe now it is working, but
the thing is, how long is it going
to work for?”
Though there was work still be
done before midges were completely
wiped out, Mr Twose said
signs were positive for the next
midge season.
“I am confident we will see a
better improvement next year,”
he said.
The city council has budgeted
$300,000 a year between 2018 and
2028 to go towards midge control
around the wastewater ponds.

A city council spokesman said
Hornby had also experienced
far less damage to infrastructure
compared to other parts of the
city.
In 2011, the suburb’s population
was 8370. By 2018, it had
grown to 9340.
Mr Duff said there is some
scepticism as to whether the new
motorway will cause traffic in
Hornby to drop, as cars travelling
in from Rolleston already
cut through Springs Rd before
linking up to stage one of the
motorway.
In the association’s submission
to the city council, he
highlighted a recent report from
The Salvation Army which interviewed
Hornby residents.
It said: “Hornby needs help as
well as the other side of
town
. . . this area is growing
too fast. It’s becoming a
bottleneck.
“The influx of new
residents, businesses and
activity since the earthquakes
has added greater
stress to our roads and
surrounding infrastructure.”
Mr Duff’s concern has been
backed by residents’ association
member Mark Peters, who
described roads such as Amyes
Rd becoming a “car park” in
rush hour.
Chalmers St, Shands Rd, Main
South Rd have also been identified
as roads needing improvement
for congestion.
Daily traffic count
figures show Amyes Rd
has about 13,600 vehicles
a day, Shands Rd 33,400
and Chalmers St to
Main South Rd has 3500
vehicles.
Mr Peters said right

To avoid potholes – Google it!
Map being developed to
indicate bumpy roads
• By Julia Evans
WORKING OUT how to
avoid potholes and bumpy
roads will soon easier with the
development of a website map.
The city council is working
on a new “roughness condition
map” which will show the
condition of each road, lane,
street and drive around the city.
Said city council planning
and delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis: “The roughness
condition map will identify
how rough a road is, both as a
measurable number, and as a
description (eg good or poor).”
Ms Ellis said the technology
is used elsewhere in New
Zealand and there is no direct
connection between the map
and the earthquakes as the map
will be using recently measured
data.
“The driver for this is to share
factual information concerning
the transport network with the
community,” she said.
It will also be used to help
inform decision-making city
councillors and community
boards make with regard to
investing money and prioritising
infrastructure.
“Functionally this is using
data that council already holds,
and serving it onto the website
via new software that has been
made available via council’s
geospatial programme,” Ms Ellis
said.
The map is intended to be live
on the website later this year.
The state of roads around the
city remains a hot topic eight
years after the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
Last year’s city council Long
Term Plan was set to focus
on the “basics” – setting out
to prioritise improvements to
roads and footpaths alongside
wastewater infrastructure and
drinking water upgrades.
ROUGH: The city council is
working on developing a
map for its website to tell
residents which roads are in
the poorest condition.

Funding
boost for
mentors
A NEW Brighton mentoring
programme has received $5000
from an accounting firm.
The donation went to Youth
Alive Trust and was made by
Social Currency, a new business,
which donates 10 per cent of its
sales to programmes for at-risk
kids.
Thanks to the donation, a New
Brighton teenager with few
male role models now has a
mentor, New Brighton’s Paddy
Caffell.
The two get together each
week to talk, go to the gym, skate
and sometimes do community
projects.
Mr Caffell said he had some
very tough experiences as a
teenager himself and it was
one of the reasons he was
passionate about supporting
young people.
“I was being hit at home and
I never had the courage to tell
anyone. It’s difficult to see what’s
happening in the head of a
teenager, but I’m in a privileged
role of walking alongside someone
who I have built trust with,” Mr
Caffell said.

how Mother’s

History tells us celebrations
related to mothers have existed
throughout the world for
thousands of years, though
the Christian celebration of
Mothering Sunday was more
about the mother church than a
celebration of women.
What is probably unknown is
the woman who campaigned for
our modern version of Mother’s
Day would later denounce the
commercialisation of this event.
It took Anna Jarvis six years
of campaigning in the United
States to have a day set aside to
honour mothers or as she put it,
“the person who has done more
for you than anyone else in the
world.”
Her own mother, Ann Reeves

or which side they fought for.

children.
When her mother passed
away Anna realised, in spite of
the positive impact women have
on society, their work for their
children and the community was
often overlooked.
Anna’s Mother’s Day was not a
commercial event, but was about
celebrating the achievements of
women and further reminding
them of their power and what can
be accomplished when women
and mothers come together for a
good cause.
Time has not diminished the
value of Anna’s message.
Mother’s Day has become
a date for launching political
causes. The wife of Martin Luther
King, Coretta used Mother’s
Day in 1968 to host a march
in support of underprivileged
women and children.
Then in the 1970s women’s
groups gathered on this day to
highlight the need for equal
rights for women and access to
child care.
On Friday at 12.30pm,
Christchurch Women’s Club
Toastmasters is holding an open
day at the Village Church on the
corner of Frank St and Papanui
Rd to celebrate the influence
of mothers and women in our
lives.
CWC Toastmasters supports
women to succeed in any
venture giving them the skills to
communicate their vision clearly
and with confidence.
Everyone is welcome to come
to this meeting.

Mum and daughter find a new home
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Matt Slaughter
ESCAPING A difficult
relationship left Doreen Mihaka
and her 17-year-old daughter
homeless.
Miss Mihaka’s mother had
recently died, so the pair were
forced to sleep in a car in the
middle of winter for three weeks
before finding emergency accommodation.
They had to share a room and
stayed there for six months.
Now, they have a home at
Housing New Zealand’s new
complex at Eveleyn Couzins Ave
in Richmond.
She said this was life-changing.
“We’ll be here forever . . . the
home that we’re in now, we can
actually call it home. We’re not
going anywhere.”
Theirs is one of the 14 new twobedroom
units at the complex.
Miss Mihaka said this was a
world apart from the Barrington
property she was living in just a
few months ago.
“It’s warm with double glazing,
really, really warm. We’ve got
our own spaces, she’s got her
room where she’s got her TV and
games all set up and I’ve got my
space downstairs here.
“We don’t have to share the
same bed, we don’t have to share
the same room. We’ve got our
own stuff.”
The new homes complete the
second and final part of the

CONSTANCE AND her family
couldn’t afford internet.
After their previous plan became
too expensive, the Linwood
residents were thrown a lifeline.
They are one of a number of
families across Christchurch, who
have received free wireless broadband
as part of a programme to
help those who can’t afford it.
The programme was a partnership
between Variety, the Children’s
Charity, and 2degrees and
was also being rolled out to 36
new development, which also
includes 23 one-bedroom units
and a large common room.
Their new living conditions
would allow Miss Mihaka
and her daughter, who was
completing tertiary study, to get
families with children at Bromley
School.
Constance said this would
make a big difference for her children
Chelsea, Nevaeh, Wairua-
Terehia and her husband Dan.
She said school had been hard
for her children without internet
access and they used to have to
go to the library to get homework
done.
“It’s just hard because everything’s
done online.”
She said having access to internet
again would help her family
move forward in life.
on with life.
“I think our lives will be
changed in a good way now compared
to what I was in for years.
The change is going to be good
for us in the long-run as well.”
“It means a lot to me because
“It just takes a bit of the hassle
off . . . it’s good for us because,
with school work for the kids,
they can do projects.
“My husband wants to start
a business eventually . . . it just
helps to get our own stuff sorted,
goals that we want to get sorted
and we’ve got quite a few.”
CONNECTED: Constance and
her family are back online
thanks to a new initiative
providing free wireless
broadband to disadvantaged
families.

me and my daughter have somewhere

home.”
Residents and neighbours
came together with Housing
New Zealand staff last month
to celebrate the opening of the
new homes.
Miss Mihaka said some of
her new neighbours had been
through their own struggles and
a real sense of togetherness had
grown as a result.
“I’ve met all of the neighbours
now and everybody’s happy and
excited and they kind of came
from similar backgrounds too.”
“This is about building a community
for our people, but it’s
about building a community for
Richmond and Eveleyn Couzins
as well,” said Housing New
Zealand area manager Fraser
Benson.
“With this space, it’s about
making sure there aren’t two
separate communities. We want
our people to interact with each
other and I can already see that’s
happening, so it’s fantastic.”

Rāpaki marks 150 years
RĀPAKI CHURCH celebrated
its 150th anniversary last week.
More than 200 people
gathered for a special service
to commemorate the historic
church, which opened in
1869.
Matua Douglas Couch, who
grew up in Rāpaki during the
1930s and 40s, said the church
was a central meeting point for
the community in those days.
“We used to go there when
the church bell rang. Sometimes
we were down on the beach and
wouldn’t hear the bell and if you
got home at dinner and hadn’t
been to church, you’d be in
trouble,” he said.
The small weatherboard
church, which can hold 80
people, has recently undergone a
significant restoration.
The church was closed
following the earthquakes
and the restoration work began
last year after funding was
received.
The restoration included
repairs to the south sanctuary
wall as well as the replacement of
the rotten main window
with a replica of an earlier
window based on an old
photograph.
The steeple was rebuilt

FOUR YEARS of hard
work in the pool and in
study has seen former
Cashmere High School
student Pia Hulley scoop
the top student athlete
leadership prize at the
University of West Florida.
At the 31st annual
Student Leadership awards
in Pensacola in the United
States Hulley was awarded
the Dr Pat Wentz Student
Athlete Leadership
Award.
THe prize is presented
to an athlete from among
the 12,000 strong student
cohort, who demonstrates
innovative, motivational
leadership, impacting their
academic, athletic and
community environments.
Hulley, 23, who is
studying a Bachelor of
Science majoring in
exercise Science, moved
from Christchurch to
take up a swimming
scholarship with the
University in 2015.
Since then she’s been
three-time honourable
mention All American in
the pool, been scholar All
American four times, and
All American once.
The All American
programme is a US-wide
student athlete recognition
programme that honours
student athletes who
have performed well
academically while
regularly competing for
their university.
Hulley made UWF
history this year when
she became one of only
two members of the
university’s swimming
team to participate in
the National Collegiate
Athletic Association
Championships in all
four years of their UWF
careers.
She holds seven of
UWF’s top 10 times for her
backstroke swims.
Hulley said it was a
huge honour to receive the
Dr Pat Wentz leadership
award.
“UWF athletics, and the
swim and dive team have
allowed me to experience
and achieve so much
during my four years at
West Florida. My biggest
achievement as an Argo
is being a team mate, so
I am extremely grateful
that my efforts to support
and motivate each of these
swimmers has made an
impact.”
The Dr Pat Wentz
award was well-deserved
recognition for Hulley who
has been swimming since
she was a toddler.
While in Florida, she
has consistently recorded
high academic marks,
while also regularly
mentoring younger
swimmers in the UWF
swim team.
Before leaving for
Florida, Hulley swam
with the Riccarton-based
Wharenui Swimming
Club.
While Hulley won’t
be spending five hours a
day in the pool anymore,
she does still has a few
more months of academic
studies and an internship
to finish before she
graduates later this year.

In the front section of the school
lie the shared facilities, boasting the
reception and administrative centre
for both schools, a spacious library, a
cultural space, two theatres, a cafeteria
with indoor and outdoor seating, and
student kitchen facilities alongside a
commercial kitchen for teaching senior
Hospitality courses.
The design of the school then
separates into two separate schools each
designed around its own courtyard.
The school is organised by learning
areas, denoting the school’s support
of subject discipline knowledge
and skills, yet with adjacencies that
provide opportunities for learning to
be connected across learning areas for
students.
Avonside supports the development
of the whole student with a strong
ako programme delivered within a
vertical form structure and wonderful
opportunities for involvement beyond
classroom learning time. The superb
facilities in the new campus certainly
enhance those opportunities for our
students.
Avonside Girls’ High School has
embraced this opportunity to provide
this exciting new brand of 21st century
style single-sex education – the best of
both worlds!
We welcome interested students and
their families to come and visit the
campus on our Open Night.
Shirley Boys’ High
School at Ōrua Paeroa
Finally after 8 years of
unstinting effort, Shirley
Boys’ is in its new home,
one that features state
of the art facilities for
teaching and learning in
the 21st Century.
The new campus
features a Performing
Arts Centre, full size all
weather turf, sports fields, the largest school
gymnasium in the city as well as traditional
classrooms and modern flexible spaces
designed to meet the needs of all of its 1250
young Shirley men.
Shirley Boys’ High School,
Kiwi Soul Global Vision
At Shirley Boys’ High School, students
are encouraged to participate in a vast
array of sporting and cultural activities
and in all of these areas they are expected
to prepare themselves for action and
success on the world stage, while also
being encouraged to retain and strengthen
their own cultural roots.
Shirley Boys’ High School encourages
students to strive for personal excellence.
Learning occurs both inside and outside
the classroom, reflecting the desire of the
school to focus on teaching the whole
person to ensure a lifelong desire for
self-improvement. At Shirley Boys’ this
is known as “BTB – Better than Before”.
BTB leads to achievement, which can
be as modest as getting fit for a sport or
improving a test score or learning to sing
in a choir. BTB can also be as spectacular
as achieving a Premier New Zealand
Academic Scholar Award (awarded to the
Top 10 academic students in NZ).
We look forward to welcoming
prospective students and families to our
Open Night, Thursday 23 May at 6.30-
8.30pm.

AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
Tyres, rims and even
great coffee
Word of mouth is the best
recommendation for any business, and there
is a raft of customers happy to recommend
JCM Direct Tyres in Middleton. The
independent, family-owned and operated
business supplies tyres, mags and rims and
it is clear from their feedback that they
provide ‘outstanding customer service,’
‘really know what they are doing,’ and even
provide ‘tasty coffee.’
Reviews like these are hard-won, with
the emphasis being on making sure they
go the extra mile to really meet the needs
of the client. As an independent dealer,
they are not tied to a specific brand.
Instead, they will look at your vehicle,
your budget and your driving style to
provide you with what you need instead
of what the franchise wants you to have.
This can be brand new tyres such as Pirelli,
Continental, GT Radial and Nankang, or
high end, almost-new second hand tyres
in mint condition, often the same brand
names as the new options. The JCM team
wants to know their customers are leaving
them with their vehicles, from caravans to

They will give you their honest opinion
and expertise about what you need too.
It could be more cost effective in the long
run to spend a little more a quality tyre and
reduce the risk of punctures on the Garden
City’s rebuild roads, and if you do have a
puncture, they can repair it quickly and
efficiently.
It is not only tyres – they supply rims
from the 1930s to the present day. If you
are lucky enough to own a classic vehicle,
you will know how difficult it can be to
find authentic parts, and the JCM team will
help you source what you need.
They also provide alloy wheels, spare
wheels plus wheel and tyre combo packages
to make their excellent products even more
affordable. They are even able to help you
with finance options.
