History of the Suffolk Breed 

The Suffolk breed, an original English 

breed, was the result of crossing Southdown 

rams on Norfolk Horned ewes. The product of 

this cross was determined to be a great 

improvement over either one of the parents. 

Although the Suffolk was a recognized breed 

as early as 1810, the flock book was not closed 

until much later. 

In 1930, Southdowns were described as 

large sheep without horns, dark faces and legs, 

fine bones and long small necks. They were 

gray to mouse brown on the face and legs. 

They were low set in front with high shoulders 

and light forequarters; however, their sides 

were good, rather broad in the loin and were 

full in the thigh and twist. Today's Suffolk 

derives its meatiness and quality wool from the 

old original British Southdown. 

The Norfolk Horned sheep, now rare, were 

a wild and hardy breed. They were black faced, 

light, fleeced sheep. Both sexes were horned. 

The upland regions of Suffolk, Norfolk and 

Cambridge on the southeastern coast of 

England are very rugged and forage is sparse. 

It was this dry, cold and windy area in which the 

Norfolk breed adapted itself to traveling great 

distances for food, thereby developing a 

superbly muscular body. 

It was said at that time of the Norfolk 

Horned, "their limbs are long and muscular, 

their bodies are long and their general form 

betokens activity and strength." This breed and 

its crosses were valued highly both by farmers 

and butchers. However, sheepmen of that day 

did not like the long legs, flat sides, nor wild 

nature of the Norfolk Horned. They noted that 

Southdowns crossed with Norfolks produced a 

progeny that reduced most 

of the criticisms of both 

breeds. 

In 1886, the English 

Suffolk Society was organized 

to provide registry 

service and to further 

develop the use of the 

breed. Through selection 

and careful breeding by 

many great English sheepmen, 

the Suffolk brought to 

this country retained the 

qualities for which they 

were originally mated. 

The first Suffolks were 

brought to this country in 

1888 by Mr. G.B. Streeter of 

Chazy, New York. During a 

visit to England the previous year, Mr. Streeter 

had been greatly impressed by Suffolk sheep. 

These prize breeding animals had belonged to 

Joseph Smith of Hasketon, and one 21 month 

old ewe weighed exactly 200 pounds when she 

came off the ship. A 9 month old ram weighed 

195 pounds and in the spring of 1890, a 7 week 

old twin weighed 85 pounds. That spring, 

Streeter had a 200% lamb crop. 

The Suffolk did not make its appearance in 

the western states until 1919. Three ewes and 

two rams had been donated by the English 

Suffolk Sheep Society to the University of 

Idaho. One of the rams was to be sold at auction 

at the National Ram Sale in Salt Lake City, 

Utah. 

Several leading sheepmen saw these 

sheep at the sale and they liked what they saw. 

After several rounds of bidding, the ram was 

finally sold to Laidlaw and Brockie (developers 

of the Panama breed) of Muldoon, Idaho, for 

$500. These men were so impressed with the 

offspring from their Suffolk ram that they made 

several inportations and were consistent buyers 

at the National Ram Sale. 

SUFFOLK TRAITS 

Mature weights for Suffolk rams range from 

250 to 350 pounds (113-159 kg), ewe weights 

vary from 180 to 250 pounds (81-113 kg). 

Fleece weights from mature ewes are between 

five and eight pounds (2.25-3.6 kg) with a yield 

of 50 to 62 percent. The fleeces are considered 

medium wool type with a fiber diameter of 25.5 

to 33.0 microns and a spinning count of 48 to 

58. The staple length of Suffolk Fleece ranges 

from 2 to 3.5 inches (5-6.75 cm).

Why Foundation 

Donations? 

The United Suffolk Sheep Association 

would like to express thanks to those members 

who have in the past, donated to our National 

Suffolk Foundation. Many of you include a few

dollars with each work order and that is certainly 

welcome and appreciated. We welcome 

any size donation. Foundation donations are 

included on the fee list. To donate you need 

only indicate the amount and include it with 

payment. It will be listed on your invoice for 

your tax records. 

We fear that perhaps many are not aware 

of how these funds are utilized. It was determined 

some time ago, that these funds would 

all go to the USSA Scholarship Fund. 

Each year, at Louisville, we award at least 

two scholarships to deserving young Suffolk 

breeders. We don’t want this to be a best kept 

secret, but want to get the word out to all of our 

members. It has been announced from time to 

time, but we want to bring it to your attention 

once more, that these donations are most 

appreciated and can do a tremendous amount 

of good. Thank you for your consideration of 

supporting this fund! 

USSA Percentage 

Program 

PURPOSE: Enables members of USSA to 

identify and maintain records on their nonpurebred 

replacement seed stock and wethers. 

RULES AND REGULATIONS* 

1. In order to record an animal in the USSA 

Percentage Registration Program, you 

must be a member in good standing of 

USSA or UJSSA. 

2. At least one parent must be registered in 

the USSA Purebred Registry or the USSA 

Percentage Registry. 

3. Percentage animals must be identified by 

permanent positive identification. 

4. Animals registered in the USSA 

Percentage Registry will receive a 

Percentage Certificate of Registration 

(printed on green paper). 

5. An animal with a percentage registration 

number will not be permitted to enter the 

purebred flock book nor will any of its 

progeny until the 15/16 level of purity is 

reached. Once progeny reaches a level of 

purity, the registration will be printed on a 

Certificate of Registration (printed on 

white paper). 

*It is helpful if members submit percentage 

registrations on the Application for Percentage 

Registration (provided in the directory, on the 

website or from the office). If you would like to 

submit an application to register percentage 

sheep and do not have the correct application, 

please indicate on the application that the animals 

being registered are percentage Suffolks.

Katherine Parsley is the daughter of Karen 

and Mike Parsley of Sheridan, Indiana. 

Katherine resides on her family's diversified 

farm which includes Suffolk sheep, cattle and 

crops. She's actively involved with 4-H, 

National Honor Society, varsity soccer, student 

council and Pursuit church youth group. 

Suffolk sheep have been in her family since 

1948—Katherine continues to keep up that 

family tradition and has exhibited sheep for 

nine years at the county, state and national levels. 

After graduation this spring she plans to 

attend the University of Kentucky and major in 

Animal Science.

National Suffolk Ambassador & Suffolk Queen Contest 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JUNE 1 

The primary responsibilities of the National Suffolk Ambassador and/or National Suffolk Queen would be to represent the 

breed at Shows and Sales. The contest will be held at the National Junior Suffolk Show each year. Applicants will be interviewed by 

a committee of three. The winner will serve a one-year term from the current National Junior Suffolk Show to the next National 

Junior Suffolk Show. 

The United Suffolk Sheep Association has set aside $1,000 to assist in the financing of expenses for the winners. Winners are 

required to turn in receipts for the $1,000. Please contact the USSA Office at 641-684-5291 or info@suffolks.org with any questions 

you may have regarding these contests. 

Qualifications: The National Suffolk Ambassador contest is open to males or females between the ages of 16 and 21, must be 

a member and in good standing with the United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association. 

The National Suffolk Queen contest is open to females between the ages of 16 and 21, must be a member and in good standing 

with the United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association 

Applicants should be willing to attend: National Junior Suffolk Show, Midwest Stud Ram Sale, and North American International 

Livestock Expositions Junior & Open Suffolk Shows.

Greetings! 

I am Jaclynn Knutson, the 2018-2019 National Junior Suffolk Association President. Currently a senior 

at South Dakota State University, I am an agricultural communications student and am excited to see what 

graduation brings in May of 2019! My family’s Suffolk flock began when my dad was a youth, and we laugh 

that it’s “the 4-H project that got out of hand.” We currently run 150 Registered Suffolk and Rambouillet ewes 

on our farm. 

Thanks to all that continue to support our junior association, especially those that helped with our 2018 

National Junior Suffolk Show in Lebanon, Indiana. For our 2019 show, a change has been made, and we 

will be in Hutchinson, Kansas, with the All-American Junior Sheep Show. If you have any questions or 

concerns about our association, please feel free to contact me, and I’d love to discuss with you. 

I would like to personally thank the rest of the association’s board of directors. Without the work of these 

individuals, the shows we host would not be what they are. Thanks to all for your behind-the-scenes help! 

As mentioned above, we are planning our 2019 show with the All-American show in Hutchinson,

2019 USSA Suffolk Ewe Lamb Futurity 

OwnEd EwE LamB 

FUTURITy RULES 

1. Entries open to any ewe lamb born after 

September 1, 2018. Ewe lambs will compete 

in their specific age divisions. 

2. Nomination fee is $25.00 per head 

payable to the United Suffolk Sheep 

Association. Breeders may nominate all of 

their ewe lamb consignments during the 

2019 sale season for a flat fee of $250. Ewe 

lambs must be nominated and designated 

prior to leaving the show ring of their class at 

a futurity sale. Payment of nomination fee is 

to be made prior to the sale of the ewe 

lambs or, for consignment sales, the nomination 

fee can be deducted from the consignor’s 

check (done by sale management). 

Breeders wanting to take advantage of the 

group rate must make the USSA aware of 

their intention before the first sale at which 

they intend to sell futurity lambs. For all ewe 

lambs nominated, the consignor will be 

billed for the nomination even if the lamb is 

not purchased by a junior. 

3. Each ewe lamb must bear the proper 

identification corresponding to the registration 

certificate. The official identifying tag for 

each lamb is the lamb’s scrapie tag or flock 

tag. The scrapie tag or flock tag number 

must be recorded prior to selling and either 

(1) submitted to the USSA Office or (2) must 

be recorded by a USSA Board of Directors 

Representative. 

4. Each ewe lamb must conform to and 

abide by the rules and regulations of the sale 

to which it is consigned. All normal entry fees 

and commissions apply. 

5. The USSA will not be held responsible for 

any dispute and/or disagreement between 

buyers and sellers. 

6. Sale Options for Nomination: 

a. Consignment Sales. Lambs can be 

consigned at the following sales: Oklahoma 

Black and White Sale, Illini All Breeds Sale, 

USSA Online Sales, Ohio Suffolk Sale, 

Nugget All American, Midwest Stud Ram 

Sale, New England Sale, Crossroads of the 

West Sale and Keystone Ram & Ewe Sale. 

Ewe lambs sold at NAILE Suffolk Sale can 

be nominated for eligibility in the yearling 

ewe futurity the following year. For any other 

sale please contact the USSA Office for eligibility. 

b. Organized Production Sales. An individual 

who desires to nominate ewe lambs 

sold in their production sale must submit 

their information to the USSA office prior to 

the sale for approval. Once a production 

sale is approved, that sale does not need to 

be reapproved the following years, if they 

would like to continue to participate in the 

USSA Futurity. In order for lambs to be eligible, 

the consignor/seller must submit a list of 

the sheep with each animal’s respective 

scrapie tag number, which are being nominated 

24 hours prior to the sale. Then, within 

48 hours following the sale the consignor 

must provide complete information for the 

buyer of the ewe lamb(s). For production 

sales, the consignor must pay the $25 nomination 

fee per head prior to the sale or 

inform the USSA office and a bill will be sent 

to the consignor. 

c. Organized Internet Sales. For individuals 

who would like to nominate ewe lambs 

through an organized internet sale, must 

submit a list of the sheep with each animal’s 

respective scrapie tag number, which are 

being nominated 24 hours prior to the sale. 

Then, within 48 hours following the sale the 

consignor must provide complete information 

for the buyer of the ewe lamb(s). For 

internet sales, the consignor must pay the 

$25 nomination fee per head prior to the sale 

or inform the USSA office and a bill will be 

sent to the consignor. 

Ewe lambs that were not nominated prior 

to the sale are not eligible for the futurity 

points or premiums. Sales management 

shall send in nominations and do not 

have the right after the sale to put a ewe 

lamb in for a breeder or junior member 

after the lamb has been sold. 

BREd & OwnEd EwE LamB 

FUTURITy RULES 

1. The junior exhibitor is responsible to 

nominate their bred and owned ewe lamb by 

July 1 or prior to first show the exhibitor 

wants to claim points from. 

2. Entries open to any ewe lamb born after

Immediate family is defined as grandparents, 

parents and siblings of the junior 

exhibitor. These lambs can remain in multiple 

juniors’ names but only one junior can 

submit point forms on each individual lamb. 

If the lamb is transferred out of the youth’s 

name it will NO LONGER be eligible. 

EXHIBITOR RULES 

1. All juniors who meet the requirements for 

the Junior Show at the North American 

International Livestock Exposition are eligible. 

Rules for the NAILE are: 

a. The participant must be 21 years old or 

younger as of January 1st. There is no lower 

age limit but the exhibitor must be physically 

able to show their own sheep. 

b. Junior members must be present to 

show their own sheep unless physically 

impaired. 

c. Animals ownership must be registered 

with the USSA office by September 1, 2018. 

Ownership must be in the exhibitor’s name. 

Youth partnerships, farm names or family 

ownerships are not permitted. 

d. Exhibitors must have current youth or 

lifetime membership in the USSA. 

2. Ewe lambs are to be registered in the 

INDIVIDUAL NAME ONLY. No partnerships, 

farm, family, 4-H Club or FFA Chapter 

names accepted in the futurity program. 

3. The junior exhibitor of a futurity ewe lamb 

may not be a family member or employee of 

the breeder as listed on the registration 

paper. For purposes of the USSA Ewe Lamb 

Futurity, family members shall include children, 

grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces 

and nephews. 

4. Ewe lambs and points earned in the futurity 

are not transferable to any other person, 

nor are points transferable from one lamb to 

another. 

5. Ewe lambs can be shown in any class, 

including commercial ewe and market lamb 

classes. The USSA is aware that many fairs 

no longer offer breed classes, this allows 

more youth to participate in the futurity. 

Eligibility is no longer restricted to Suffolk 

classes. 

6. No futurity entrant may compete with 

more than two ewe lambs. Total points 

earned by two ewe lambs cannot be combined. 

7. If registration papers are not received by 

the first show, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility 

to show the lamb in the proper age category 

and have sales receipt to prove ownership.

8. The registered owner of the lamb must 

exhibit the lamb. However, if an exhibitor 

has two ewe lambs in the same class, another 

junior member may exhibit the second 

ewe lamb. 

9. Final results will be announced during the 

conclusion of the North American 

International Livestock Exposition Open 

Suffolk Show. 

10. Premiums: A minimum of $100 will be 

paid to the winner of each district. Premium 

payout will be based on participation. 

The overall USSA Futurity winner will 

receive a minimum of $500 total premium 

payout. Premiums will be paid out by 

December 31. 

POInT SCORInG 

1. A point record form must be filled out for 

each showing and forward to the USSA 

office by November 1st. Points will automatically 

be added for ewes exhibited at NAILE. 

The point form must be signed by the superintendent 

of the appropriate show. 

2. At each individual show the ewe lamb 

may earn futurity points from both open division 

and/or the junior division. 

3. Ewe lambs may compete at an unlimited 

number of shows. However, only the top 

seven (7) point awards go towards their 

total. There will be no double points rewarded. 

Each year the overall winner (across districts) 

of the will be rewarded with a trophy 

donated by Quam Suffolks. 

4. The period for eligible shows will be from 

the Oklahoma Black and White Sale in April 

until the NAILE in the current year. 

5. Although both fall and spring ewe lambs 

are eligible for the futurity, only one set of 

premiums will be paid for the USSA Futurity. 

The lambs are to be shown in their proper 

age division at the shows and the point totals 

combined for the futurity placing. Wether 

and market ewe lamb classes are not eligible 

for futurity points. 

6. Futurity points will be awarded according 

to the following scale*:

Please note that the yearling ewe does not 

have to be nominated as a ewe lamb the

1. Any purchased yearling ewe is eligible to 

participate in the USSA Yearling Ewe 

Futurity. 

2. Yearling Ewe Nomination Procedures 

a. If the yearling ewe was futurity nominated 

as a ewe lamb, the ewe automatically 

is nominated as a yearling. 

b. If the yearling ewe was not previously 

nominated as a ewe lamb, it is the junior 

exhibitor’s responsibility to nominate the 

yearling ewe. The cost to nominate the yearling 

ewe is $25. 

c. Ewe lambs sold at the NAILE Suffolk 

Sale can be nominated for eligibility in the 

Yearling Ewe Futurity. 

3. Yearling ewes must be nominated by July

The Junior Coordinators are the adult representatives 

of the UJSSA. The Coordinators 

receive a stipend from the UJSSA and the 

USSA to help with travel expenses. 

The UJSSA is governed by a Board of 

Directors selected by a USSA Selection 

Committee. The first year elected to Junior 

Board is for one year as an intern. After that 

first year as an intern, the terms of office are for 

two years.

2019 All-American Junior Show Rules and Regulations 

July 4-7, 2019 • Hutchinson, Kansas 

Purpose: 

The purpose of the All-American Junior 

Sheep Show is to provide a weekend vacation 

for youngsters raising sheep and their families. 

Social activities as well as competitive events 

are planned. Emphasis is being placed on 

meeting other youngsters and learning the 

attributes of all breeds of sheep. Promotional 

contests are designed to assist youngsters in 

developing marketing skills necessary for the 

Sheep Industry of the future. 

General Rules: 

1. The All-American Junior Sheep Show is 

open to youngsters who are 21 years of age or 

less on January 1st. 

2. Juniors showing breeding stock or entering 

promotional contests must be a junior 

member on record of their respective breed 

association. Youngsters may exhibit more than 

one breed. 

3. Ownership must be recorded in junior’s 

name, chapter or club name, immediate family 

or farm name, unless otherwise specified by 

their respective breed association. 

4. Deadline for ownership is July 1st. All 

registration certificates are required and must 

be duly processed by the respective breed 

association. Exception: Sheep purchased at 

public auction after May 25th, will be allowed to 

show with a bill of sale which identifies said 

sheep by breed, age and flock number. 

5. Juniors must be present to show their 

own entries unless physically impaired. If two 

animals are entered in the same class, another 

junior must show the other entry. With no 

lower age limit, the junior exhibitor must still be 

physically capable of showing his or her own 

sheep. *See special Breed Rules 

6. Entries must be postmarked by May 

25th. All entries must have appropriate fees

7. Each exhibitor may enter a maximum of 

the following: Breeding Stock: Two entries in 

each single sheep class and one in each group 

class. Market Lambs: Two market lambs per 

breed. Wool Show: Two ram and two ewe 

fleeces. Promotion Contests: One entry per 

class. 

8. Market Lambs may be ewes or wethers. 

Ewe lambs in the Market Class will not be 

allowed to show in the Breeding Stock Show. 

All Market Lambs must be slick-shorn and 

show no evidence of fungus. 

9. Each entry will be assigned a separate 

number in the official catalog of the show. Ring 

cards with the respective entry numbers will be 

provided. This ring card must be brought to the 

show ring by the exhibitor showing the sheep. 

10. All sheep must be in place by NOON on 

Thursday and must remain until the close of 

activities on Sunday. Anyone removing sheep 

from the grounds without show management 

approval is subject to forfeiture of all premium 

money and awards. 

11. Exhibitors should bring initial feed and 

bedding but additional supplies will be available 

for purchase. 

12. All aisles must be cleaned before 8:00 

a.m. each day. All refuse matter must be disposed 

of in provided containers. 

13. All entries for exhibits of any kind or 

character in this show are subject to these 

rules and regulations and any violation will subject 

exhibitors to any penalties the executive 

committee may order. 

14. The show management reserves the 

final and absolute right to interpret these rules 

and regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine 

all matters, questions or differences in 

regard there to, or otherwise arising out of, or 

incident to the show. 

15. The management reserves the right to 

accept or reject entirely, partially or conditionally 

any entry of application. The management 

also reserves the right to personally, or appoint 

a committee to, inspect all entries after they 

have arrived and dismiss any entries that 

would discredit the exposition. 

16. No inhumane treatment of animals will 

be allowed. No muzzles, painting of animals, 

and drenching allowed. 

17. Any exhibitor making a protest shall 

lodge such protest with the executive committee 

in writing within 24 hours of the cause of 

the protest. Protest must be based on violation 

of rules. No protest shall be considered by the 

management unless accompanied by a 

deposit of $250 cash, certified check or money 

order. This deposit shall be forfeited if the 

protest is not sustained. Protests shall be adjudicated 

by the executive committee. 

18. The All-American Show Managers, 

Committee, Breed Associations, or Fair Board 

of the respective fairgrounds is not responsible 

in case of any accidents. 

19. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. 

Any exhibitor and/or family members 

may be excused from the All-American for any 

behavior as deemed by the executive committee.

DORSET & SOUTHDOWN RULE: Sheep

Health Requirements: 

Health Inspection—There will be health 

inspections on Wednesday afternoon and 

Thursday morning (see schedule for times). All 

animals will need to be presented to an AAJS 

staff and the vet during inspection. Health 


papers, on all animals both in-state and out of 

state, will have to be signed and stickered by 

AAJS vet. You will have to show stickered 

health papers to check-in staff, before you can 

complete paperwork check-in on Thursday. 

Animals showing signs of any communicable 

disease will be asked to leave the barn and will 

not be allowed to participate in the show. 

KanSaS Health Regulations: 

KANSAS Health Paper Requirements—all 

animals entering the state of Kansas shall be 

accompanied by an official Certificate of 

Veterinary Inspection (CVI, health certificate) 

issued within 30 days prior to movement. In 

addition to the general requirements, sheep 

must be: 

• Be free of any signs of “sore mouth” -- Be 

free of signs of active fungal (ringworm) infection, 

including club lamb fungus 

• All sexually intact (ewes & rams) and 

wethers must be identified with an official 

USDA premise ID tag. Lambs, under 8 weeks 

of age, accompanying their dams, are exempt 

from identification requirements.

DNA Testing

With recent advancements in genetic technologies, 

selection of your next flock additions 

can involve much more than simple phenotypic 

appraisals. DNA testing can now allow determination 

of genotype directly from an easy-to-take 

sample. DNA testing may one day allow selection 

for carcass traits, such as muscling and tenderness, 

feed efficiency, out of season breeding 

and disease and parasite resistance. Already 

today, two disorders and diseases that in the 

past two decades have been detrimental to the 

sheep industry are now being controlled and 

even eliminated thanks to DNA testing. These 

disorders are Scrapie and Spider Syndrome. 

Scrapie is a fatal degenerative disease that 

affects the central nervous system in sheep and 

can be passed from sheep to sheep. Positive 

diagnosis of scrapie can result in a flock being 

quarantined and animals destroyed. Fortunately, 

sheep can have genetic resistance to scrapie 

that can be detected with a simple and inexpensive 

DNA test. By using DNA testing it is possible 

and practical for a breeder to select for and 

breed resistant animals. Buyers can also be 

assured that they are buying resistant sheep. 

Spider syndrome is a genetic disorder that 

causes bent legs, a twisted spine, nose and/or 

rib cage. Animals that have this disorder are economic 

liabilities to the producer. A DNA test is 

also available to determine if a sheep is a carrier 

of this genetic mutation. 

HOw dO I dna TEST? 

DNA testing is performed by a laboratory and 

only requires a sheep owner to submit a sample. 

Since DNA is found in every cell in a sheep's 

body (except red blood cells), DNA can be isolated 

and tested from a variety of sample types. 

For sheep DNA testing, the most commonly 

used sampling methods are blood tubes (there is 

plenty of DNA in white blood cells), blood cards 

and ear tag tissue samplers. 

Blood tube collection requires the most 

expertise, since blood must be obtained from a 

vein or artery, and many producers utilize a veterinarian 

to collect samples in blood tubes. DNA 

tests require that blood be collected in purple top 

tubes, which contain an agent (EDTA) that prevents 

the blood from clotting. It is more difficult, 

but not impossible, to get a good DNA sample 

from clotted blood. Blood tube samples should 

be kept cold and shipped to the lab soon after 

collection. 

Blood cards are easier for most users who 

want to collect samples themselves, although it 

is very important to take a good sample to avoid 

problems at the lab. A small cut or nick is made, 

most commonly in the ear, and a few drops of 

blood collected on the card. Some types of blood 

cards require that the sample be allowed to air 

dry thoroughly. Blood cards can be kept for a

long period after collection and can be sent to 

the lab via regular mail. 

Ear tag samplers may be the simplest of all 

to use and take a small punch of tissue from the 

ear using an applicator very similar to an ear tagger. 

Some of the ear tag samplers leave a tag in 

the ear, others do not. The container into which 

the sample is collected contains a drying agent 

that allows the sample to be stored at room temperature 

for long periods without damage. 

Both blood cards and ear tag samplers allow 

the user to sample at one time and submit the 

samples later. For example, a sample may be 

taken when the lamb is first born and tagged, but 

the sample need not be submitted for testing 

until it is determined if the lamb will be kept in the 

flock. 

Hair samples can also be tested, however, 

the hair must be pulled and not cut, since most 

of the DNA in hair is in the follicle. Any tissue 

sample can also be tested. It is best to freeze a 

tissue sample and submit it frozen. 

HOw dOES dna TESTInG wORK? 

First a little background. DNA is the genetic 

material of all higher organisms. It is the blueprint 

for making and maintaining the animal and 

consists of a long string of subunits linked 

together – imagine beads on a wire. In the case 

of sheep and humans, there are about 3 billion 

beads (actually nucleotides). The 3 billion 

nucleotides are in several different strings, which 

are organized in chromosomes. There are 54 

chromosomes in sheep (humans have 46). 

These are actually 27 pairs of chromosomes. 

One chromosome of each pair comes from the 

mother and one from the father. 

Along each chromosome are sequences of 

nucleotides that comprise genes. Genes are 

stretches of DNA that code for proteins, the 

building blocks and workhorses of all animals. It 

can be that changing a single nucleotide in a 

protein can change the function of that protein. 

In the cases of scrapie susceptibility and spider 

syndrome such changes have occurred in two 

sheep genes. (The prion protein gene in the 

case of scrapie and a fibroblast growth factor 

receptor gene in the case of spider.) DNA testing 

detects these single nucleotide changes. 

DNA testing, especially testing for scrapie 

susceptibility, is sometimes referred to as “codon 

testing.” A codon is a subunit of a gene, actually 

3 nucleotides that code for a single amino acid 

(amino acids are the subunits of proteins – proteins 

can also be thought of as beads on a wire, 

but this time the beads are amino acids). For 

example, the prion protein gene consists of 256 

codons, which means that the protein contains 

256 amino acids. 

Scrapie susceptibility is affected by a few 

amino acids, the most important of which is 

coded for by codon 171, although codon 136, 

154 and 141 also have some effect. Codon 171 

codes either for the amino acid glutamine, which 

in the single letter amino acid dictionary is abbreviated 

as “Q”, or for arginine, abbreviated as “R”. 

Thus, sheep may be referred to by their codon 

171 genotype as QQ, QR or RR. Remember, 

sheep carry two copies of the prion protein gene 

(one from mother, one from father) and, therefore, 

the genotype must have two letters. 

To determine the sheep's genotype, a laboratory 

will isolate DNA from the sample submitted 

and, by any of a variety of methods, determine 

the codon 171 genotype. This sounds simple, 

but the difference between Q and R is a single 

nucleotide – one out of 3 billion. The fact that

this genotyping can be so easily and economically 

accomplished is really quite remarkable. 

HOw dO I USE dna TEST RESULTS? 

The results of DNA tests can be used to 

guide selection of replacements and help make 

breeding and purchase decisions. 

Results for scrapie susceptibility (codon 171) 

will say that the sheep is QQ, QR or RR. The 

very good news is that both QR and RR sheep 

are resistant to scrapie. In other words, resistance 

is dominant and “R” can also be thought of 

as standing for “Resistant.” Therefore, an RR 

ram or ewe will only produce resistant (QR or 

RR) offspring. When mated to an RR sheep, all 

the offspring will be RR, when mated to a QQ 

sheep, all the offspring will be QR and when 

mated to a QR sheep, half the offspring will be 

RR and half will be QR. 

It should probably be noted that the codon 

136 genotype is sometimes important. Sheep 

prion protein genes will be either “A” (alanine) or 

“V” (valine) and, therefore, sheep will be either 

AA, AV or VV. Both VV and AV sheep are susceptible 

to scrapie. Again, there is good news. 

“R” and “A” are linked, such that if the gene is “R” 

at codon 171, it will be “A” at codon 136. 

Therefore, all RR sheep are AA and completely 

resistant. QR sheep can be AV, which could 

make them susceptible. It may, therefore, be a 

good idea to test QR sheep at codon 136. 

However, once you find that a sheep is AA, you 

never need to test its offspring at codon 136 if 

you only breed it to other AA sheep. The offspring 

of RR by RR crosses never need to be 

tested. 

SPIdER SyndROmE 

Spider syndrome is a recessive genetic condition 

that is widely considered to have originated 

in Suffolk sheep. Although sheep with two 

copies of the “spider” gene are severely 

deformed and rarely live to maturity, however, 

sheep with a single copy of the gene have 

increased bone growth that generally makes 

them larger and taller than an otherwise genetically 

identical sheep without the “spider” gene. 

The results of a DNA test for Spider 

Syndrome will be NN (non-carrier), NS (carrier) 

or SS (possess Spider Syndrome, most commonly 

known as a spider lamb). “N” and “S” do 

not, in the case of Spider Syndrome, stand for 

the names of amino acids, but rather mean 

“Normal” or “Spider” An NN individual does not 

carry the “spider” gene and will never pass it to 

its offspring. An NS individual can pass the gene 

onto its offspring, but when mated to a NN individual 

will never produce a spider lamb. An SS 

individual is a spider and probably will never 

carry a lamb to term. But in the unlikely case that 

this occurs, when bred to a NN individual the offspring 

will all be carriers. When bred to an NS 

individual 50 percent of the offspring will be carriers 

and 50 percent will be spider lambs. 

Crossing two NS sheep will, on average, produce 

25% normal (NN) lambs, 50% carrier (NS) 

lambs, and 25% spider (SS) lambs. 

SUFFOLKS and dna TESTInG 

Suffolks have definitely been the “Breed in 

the Lead” when it comes to DNA testing and 

have widely adopted DNA testing to manage 

both scrapie susceptibility and Spider Syndrome. 

Several breeds at many sales now 

require that sellers guarantee the codon 171 and 

spider genotypes of their sheep, a practice originated 

by the USSA. 

a CaUTIOnaRy nOTE 

The laboratories that do DNA testing are very 

good and mistakes are very rare. Breeders are 

generally very good sample takers and mistakes 

are very rare. However, humans are involved 

and mistakes are made. There are sad stories of 

people paying lots of money for their RR stud 

ram, using him on a large group of their top ewes 

and then finding QQ lambs among the offspring. 

(Remember, it is not possible to get QQ lambs 

when even one parent is RR.) The take home 

lesson is that sometimes the expense of an extra 

DNA test is very inexpensive insurance. 

USSA Board 

Adopts Suffolk 

Genetic Recovery 

Program 

The United Suffolk Board on its retreat during 

the spring of 2015 proposed a goal of 

establishing a Suffolk genetic recovery program 

under the Breed Improvement Plan. It 

became apparent to the board that a number of 

Suffolk breeders had not registered their 

Suffolks for many years. These sheep were not 

eligible for the percentage registration program 

even though they were of Suffolk origins. 

The board decided to explore the ramifications 

of allowing these breeders to register 

their sheep by appointing a committee to further 

investigate the issue. The board adopted a 

Suffolk genetic recovery proposal after much 

research and numerous meetings. The parameters 

of the program are as follows. 

Eligibility for Suffolk GAP Registrations: 

1. Must be a member in good standing of 

the USSA or UJSSA. 

2. Certify to the best of your knowledge that 

the sheep being considered for GAP are of 

Suffolk descent by signing the application for 

registration. 

3. Offspring of these ewes are only eligible 

for registration if sired by a registered (fullblood) 

Suffolk ram. 

Instructions for GAP Registrations: 

• Own one or more blackface ewes that are 

Suffolk in their phenotype. 

• Papers have not been maintained on 

these ewes for generations. 

• Records have been maintained on the 

ewes and you are confident that they are 

Suffolk in their genetic makeup. 

• Fill out a background questionnaire on the 

sheep being preposed for registration. 

• An inspection, either physically or photographically, 

will validate their phenotype and 

determine their eligibility for registration. 

• Physical inspection will be by a USSA 

director or designee of the USSA Board. 

• Two photos per ewe will be required 

- One picture of the animal’s head 

(front view) 

- One picture of the animal’s profile 

(side view) 

- Photos should be of reasonable 

quality and clear 

• Once the ewes have been approved for 

registration, complete an application for Suffolk 

GAP registration.

Bylaws of the United 

Suffolk Sheep Association 

Amended by membership vote 

Nov. 1, 2017. 

ARTICLE I. NAME. 

The name of this organization shall be the United 

Suffolk Sheep Association (USSA). 

ARTICLE II. PURPOSE. 

The United Suffolk Sheep Association is a nonprofit 

organization, without capital stock, whose 

purpose is to foster, promote and develop the 

Suffolk breed of sheep in particular, and the sheep 

industry in general. It shall keep records of all 

sheep recorded in or by the Association, issue official 

papers covering the same and perform any 

and all functions connected with the registration of 

sheep. Such records shall be permanent in character 

and at the disposition of the members or contractors 

of the Association. The Association shall 

receive and disburse the finances of the organization. 

ARTICLE III. MEMBERSHIP. 

Section 1. General Qualifications. Any owner 

and registrant of Suffolk or percentage Suffolk in 

the United Suffolk Sheep Association may become 

a member; provided that each owner and registrant 

shall be represented by but one membership 

whether such owner and registrant are an individual, 

partnership, corporation, association or other 

entity. To be a member in good standing for purposes 

of voting in Association elections, a member 

must: (1) have paid dues for the current year, (2) 

have no outstanding financial obligation to the 

Association more than sixty (60) days past due, (3) 

currently own Suffolk sheep and (4) have registered 

sheep in the United Suffolk Sheep 

Association within the last fiscal year. Individuals 

wishing to become Associate members of the 

Association may do so simply by paying annual 

dues. Associate members cannot vote in 

Association elections. 

Section 2. Junior Membership. The Board of 

Directors shall have the authority to establish a 

separate membership class for junior members 

with such limitations and qualifications as the 

Board shall establish from time to time; provided, 

however the such junior member shall have no voting 

rights. Details on Junior Membership are 

described in the United Suffolk Sheep Association 

Junior Membership Bylaws. 


Section 3. Members that are not individuals. 

Any member that is a partnership, corporation, 

Association, or other entity (i.e. not an individual 

person) shall designate in writing to the 

Association the name of the individual who is 

authorized to sign and vote on behalf of the member. 

Section 4. Voting Rights. Each member of the 

Association in good standing, other than Junior 

son or by proxy. Every decision of a majority of 

such quorum shall be valid as a corporate act, 

except in those specific instances in which a larger 

vote is required by law or by these Bylaws. 

Section 6. Meeting Procedures. All meetings of 

the membership shall be conducted according to 

parliamentary procedures as set forth in the latest 

revision of Robert’s Rules of Order. 

Section 4. Election of Directors. Candidates for 

a director’s position shall cause to be delivered to 

the USSA office a letter of nomination, which letter 

shall be received at the office by August 1 of that 

year. An official ballot containing the names and 

resumes of district candidates shall be mailed to all 

members of the association by September 1 of that 

year. To vote in the election of Directors, a member 

must return the ballot to the association office by 

members, shall be entitled to one vote on each ARTICLE V. DIRECTORS. 

October 1 of that year. Director applicants receiving 

matter submitted to a vote of the membership. A 

member may vote either in person or by proxy 

appointed in writing by the member or his duly 

authorized attorney-in-fact. An appointed proxy 

must be a member of the Association. No proxy 

shall be valid after 90 days from the date of its executing, 

unless otherwise provided in the proxy. 

Section 5. Membership dues and service fees. 

The Board of Directors may determine from time to 

time the amount of annual membership dues and 

the amount of fees for services that shall be 

payable to the Association. The Board of Directors 

may also establish the time or times at which membership 

dues and service fees are due and 

payable, and procedures for dealing with members 

and others in default of payment. If a person or 

organization is in default of annual membership 

payment, all registration and associated fees will 

be billed at non-member rates until annual dues 

Section 1. Powers of the Board. A Board of 

Directors shall manage the property and affairs of 

the Association. The Board of Directors derives its 

powers and authority from the members and its 

powers and authority is limited by and subject to 

the will of the members voting in person or by 

proxy at any annual meeting or special called 

meeting. Except as limited by law and the members, 

the Board of Directors shall have and is vested 

with the power and authority to do, or cause to 

be done, any and all things for and on behalf of the 

Association, to exercise or cause to be exercised 

any and all of its powers, privileges or franchises 

and to seek the effectuation of its purposes and 

objectives. 

Section 2. Number and Qualifications. The 

Board of Directors shall consist of twelve members 

of the Association in good standing. Prior to declaring 

their candidacy, a member must have registered 

the most votes in his/her district shall be 

deemed elected. In the event of a tie, the present 

directors will pick the winner or one of the tie candidates 

may choose to refrain from election. The 

secretary of the USSA will inform, by mail, all voting 

members of the election results. 

Section 5. Commencement of Term of Office. 

Newly elected Directors shall commence their term 

of office immediately following the adjournment of 

the last regular meeting of the Board of Directors, 

preceding the Annual Meeting of members. 

Section 6. Vacancies. In the case of a vacancy on 

the Board of Directors, the Directors shall have the 

power to fill such vacancy with the appointment of 

a member who lives in the district with the vacant 

seat to serve the unexpired term until the next 

annual meeting, at which time the opening would 

be filled in the same manner provided in Section 4.

Section 6. Withdrawals. Any member may withdraw

shall terminate; provided, however, that after a 

complaint has been initiated against a member, the 

right of such member to withdraw from membership 

shall be suspended until the termination of all 

proceedings in connection with such complaint, 

unless the Executive Committee or the Board of 

Directors otherwise approves.

members are represented. 

Section 3. Term of Office. The twelve members of 

members will vote for two (2) candidates. The two 

candidates receiving the most votes will fill the 

Board of Directors vacancies in the following manner. 

The person with the most votes will fill the 

three-year term and the person with the second 

most votes will fill the shorter term. Filling an 

uncompleted term will not preclude a Director from 

being elected to the Board of Directors for two consecutive 

three-year terms. 

Section 7. Compensation. Directors shall not 

receive any stated compensation for their services, 

but by resolution of the Board, reimbursement for 

expenses, if any, may be allowed for attendance at 

each meeting of the Board, or for performing other 

duties assigned by the Board.

conditions. Correspondence regarding the meeting 

shall be delivered not less than twenty-five (25) 

days nor more than sixty (60) days before the date 

of the meeting. It is the responsibility of those initiating 

the meeting to see that the membership is 

informed in a timely fashion. 

Section 4. Waiver of Notice. Whenever any 

notice is required to be given under the provisions 

of these Bylaws, or of any law, a waiver thereof in 

writing, signed by the person or persons entitled to 

such notice whether before, at, or after the time 

stated therein, shall be deemed the equivalent to 

the giving of such notice. To the extent permitted 

by law, attendance of a member at any meeting 

shall constitute a waiver of notice of such meeting. 

Section 5. Quorum. A quorum at any meeting of 

the membership shall consist of not less than twenty-five 

members in good standing present in per-

Carolina, and Florida. To provide equal representation 

to members, it is intended that these districts 

have substantially the same number sheep registered 

with the Association each year. The Directors 

may from time to time move one or more states to 

contiguous districts to equalize the numbers of registrations 

in each district. 

The term of office of the Directors shall be three 

years and until their successors are elected and 

take office. Nothing contained herein shall preclude 

a member of the Board of Directors from succeeding 

himself or herself, except that no person 

shall consecutively serve more than two three-year 

terms. Following service of two consecutive threeyear 

terms, a member would again be eligible for 

election to the Board of Directors at the first election 

following the end of the most recent term 

served by that former Director. Not more than two 

Directors residing in any one state may serve on 

the Board at any one time and all Directors must 

reside in the district which they represent.

Section 9. Regular Meetings. Regular meetings 

of the Board of Directors, whether they be face to 

face or conference calls, will be held periodically 

during the year as deemed the Board President or

Section 10. Special Meetings. A special meeting

President, or any three or more of the Directors by 

giving ten days’ notice of such meeting to each 

member of the Board of Directors, either personally 

or by mail, stating the time, place and purpose of 

any such meeting. The place of the special meeting 

may be within or without the State of Missouri, 

as designated in the notice. The purpose of the 

special meeting must be specified in writing and 

provided to each Board member at the time the 

meeting is called. 

Section 11. Special Meeting by Conference 

Telephone. Members of the Board or of any committee 

may participate in a meeting of the Board or 

its committees by means of conference telephone 

or other similar communications equipment, provided 

there has been five days written notice, 

whereby all persons participating in the meeting 

can hear each other, and participation in a meeting 

in such a manner shall constitute being present at 

such meeting. 

Section 12. Action in Lieu of Meeting. Unless 

otherwise restricted by law, any action requested

to be, or that may be, taken at a meeting of the 

Board, may be taken without a meeting if consent 

in writing setting forth the action so taken shall be 

signed by all of the Directors entitled to vote with 

respect to the subject matter thereof. Any such 

consent signed by all of the Directors shall have 

the same effect as a unanimous vote and may be 

stated as such in any document describing the 

action taken by the Board of Directors. 

Section 13. Waiver of Notice. Any notice provided 

or required to be given to the Directors may be 

waived in writing by any of them, whether before, 

at, or after the times stated therein. The attendance 

of a Director at any meeting shall constitute 

waiver of notice of such meeting except where the 

Director attends and so states at the opening of the 

meeting, for the express purpose of objecting to 

the transaction of any business because the meeting 

was not lawfully called or convened. 

Section 14. Quorum. At all meetings of the Board 

of Directors, a majority of the whole Board shall 

constitute a quorum for the transaction of business, 

and the act of a majority of the Directors 

present at any meeting at which there is a quorum, 

except as may be otherwise specifically provided 

by law or by these Bylaws or by Articles of 

Incorporation shall be the act of the Board of

Section 3. Term of Office. Each officer of the 

Association shall hold office for a term of one year 

or until a successor is selected, unless the officer 

is removed or resigns before such time. Nothing

more than three consecutive terms. 

Section 4. Compensation. Reimbursement for 

the expenses, if any, of the President or Vice- 

President in attending meetings or carrying out 

responsibilities designated by the Board of 

Directors shall be fixed by the Board of Directors. 

Compensation for the staff and expenses for carrying 

out official responsibilities shall be fixed by the 

Board of Directors. 

Section 5. Removal. Any officer shall be removed, 

with cause, by the vote of two-thirds of the 

Directors present in person or by proxy at any regular 

meeting or any special meeting called for that 

purpose at which a quorum is present and at least 

ten days previous written notice was provided and 

the officer is offered the opportunity to respond to 

any accusations. 

Section 6. Resignation. Any officer may resign at 

any time by giving written notice of such resignation 

taking office. 

Section 11. Delegation of Duties. If any officer is 

absent, or unable to act, or for any other reason 

the Board may deem sufficient, the Board may delegate, 

for the time begin, some or all of the functions, 

duties, powers and responsibilities of any 

officer to any other officer, agent, or employee of 

the Association or other responsible person, provided 

a majority of the whole Board concurs therein. 

Section 12. Appointment of Other Officers and 

Agents. The Board of Directors may also appoint, 

from time to time, such other officers, agents and 

attorneys-in-fact as it may deem necessary or 

advisable. All appointed officers, agents, and attorneys-in-fact 

shall hold their respective positions at 

the pleasure of the Board or for such terms as the 

Board may specify, and they shall exercise such 

powers and perform such duties as shall be determined 

from time to time by the Board of Directors 

or by an elected officer empowered by the Board to 

make such determination. 

Section 13. Bond. The Board of Directors shall 

insure that an Errors and Omissions insurance policy 

is kept and held current on all Board members 

and staff.

Association members in that Director’s district of 

the proposed removal of any Director must be 

made in writing at least twenty-five (25) days prior 

to and no longer than sixty (60) days prior to the 

meeting. The Directors(s) must be provided an 

opportunity to respond to any accusations. The 

meeting will be in that Director’s district. A two 

thirds (2/3) vote by members present, in person or 

by proxy; will be required to remove a director. The 

individual(s) calling the meeting will state the place 

and time of the meeting. 

Section 7. Vacancies. Vacancies caused by the 

death, resignation, incapacity, removal or disqualification 

of any officer shall be filled by the Board of 

Directors. Any person so appointed to fill such 

vacancy shall serve at the pleasure of the Board 

for the un-expired term of the predecessor or until 

the successor is elected and commences the term 

of office. 

Section 8. President. The President shall preside 

at all meetings of the membership and the Board of 

Directors and shall be member ex-officio with the 

right to vote on all committees in case of a tie vote. 

The President shall also, at the annual meeting of 

the Association as the President deems proper, 

communicate to the membership and the Board of 

Directors such matters and make such suggestions 

as may, in the President’s opinion, tend to 

promote the prosperity and welfare and increase 

the usefulness of the Association. In addition, the 

President shall perform such other duties as are 

necessarily incident to the office for the President 

and shall arrange the Association staff and 

employees for the auditing the books, accounts 

and records of the Association. Such audit shall be 

conducted by a legal auditor, approved by the 

Section 1. Executive Committee. The Executive 

Committee shall consist of the President, the Vice- 

President, and the Treasurer, who serves as the 

chair of the finance committee appointed by an 

election by the Board of Directors. The Executive 

Committee shall, when the Board is not in session, 

supervise and direct the affairs of the Association 

under policies established by the Board, reporting 

to the Board for its ratification of the Committee’s 

action. 

Section 2. Other Committees. The Board of 

Directors may, from time to time, establish such 

other committees as it deems necessary or appropriate, 

with such powers and authority as the 

Board shall designate. The members of each committee, 

other than the Executive Committee, shall 

be appointed by the President with the approval of 

the Board of Directors. A majority of the members 

of any committee shall constitute a quorum for the 

transaction of business at any meeting of that committee. 

Each committee shall meet at such times 

as may be designated by the President of the 


Section 3. Place of Meeting. Meetings of committees 

may be held at any place as determined by 

ARTICLE VI. OFFICERS. 

Board. Such audit shall be reported at the Annual the chairman of that committee. A conference call

shall consist of a President, a Vice-President, and 

a Treasurer. No offices may be held by the same 

person. To be eligible to serve as President, Vice 

President or Treasurer the individual must have 

served on the Board the previous year. 

Section 2. Election of President and Vice- 

President. The President and Vice-President shall 

be elected annually, from the members of the 

Board of Directors, by the Board of Directors, at a 

Board meeting immediately following the close of 

the last regular annual Board Meeting, preceding 

the annual meeting of the members. Such election 

shall be conducted by the retiring President who is 

ineligible to be reelected; if the retiring President is 

eligible to be reelected, the retiring Vice-President 

shall conduct the election unless the retiring Vice- 

President is eligible for election as President; if 

both the retiring President and Vice-President are 

eligible for election as President, the lead 

Association Staff person available shall conduct 

the election of President. In case of a tie, when voting 

for president, if the vote is a tie after a second 

vote, the most senior (by age) retiring board member 

will vote to break the tie in a third vote by 

sealed ballot. The newly elected President shall 

take office immediately upon his election and con- 

meeting. 

Section 9. Vice-President. The Vice-President 

shall act in the capacity of the President in the 

event of the President’s absence, disability or 

death and shall perform such other specific duties 

as may be assigned by the President or the Board 

of Directors. 

Section 10. Employees. The Association staff 

shall be employed by the Board of Directors at 

salaries designated by the Board of Directors and 

shall be responsible for managing the day to day 

affairs of the Association, for issuing notices of 

meetings, for keeping all records of the 

Association, including the membership roll, in such 

manner as may be directed by the Board of 

Directors and the Association. The Board shall 

direct staff to take charge of funds of the 

Association and be empowered to disburse 

Association funds as the Board of Directors 

directs, and prepare a suitable report of financial 

and other business of the Association for the regular 

annual meeting, or at such times as may be 

considered necessary by the President. The 

Association staff shall also carry out such other 

duties as the Board of Directors may conduct, or 

cause to be conducted, an audit of the 

Association’s financial condition prior to new staff 

would be preferred. 

Section 4. Notice. Written notice of all committee 

meetings shall be given not less than ten (10) days 

prior to any meeting unless all committee members 

and the President approve a waiver of that requirement. 

Any notice required to be given to members 

of any committee may be waived in writing by any 

of the members. 

Section 5. Compensation. Reimbursement for 

the expenses, if any, of attending meetings of any 

committee shall be fixed by the Board of Directors. 

Section 6. Removal. Any member of any committee 

may be removed, with cause, by a two-thirds 

vote of the Board of Directors at any meeting at 

which a quorum is present and at least ten days 

previous written notice was provided and the committee 

member is offered the opportunity to 

respond to any accusations. 

Section 7. Resignation. Any member of any committee 

may resign at any time by giving written 

notice of such resignation to the President or

ARTICLE VIII. TERMINATION OR 

CURTAILMENT OF MEMBERSHIP. 

Section 1. Expulsion and Censure of Members. 

Any member of this Association: (1) who violates 

the Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws or Rules of 

Registry of the Association; (2) who shall deceive 

or wrong the Association; a member thereof, or 

another person with respect to Suffolk sheep; (3) 

whose practices in the breeding of Suffolk sheep 

are such as to impair the reliability of the records of 

the Association; or (4) who in holding or managing 

a public sale of purebred Suffolk sheep or consigning 

animals to such sale, engages in any 

fraudulent or unethical practice in connection with 

such sale, may be censured, suspended or 

expelled by the Board of Directors after notice and 

a hearing as hereinafter provided. The Board of 

Directors shall have the power, in its discretion, to 

define from time to time what constitutes such 

fraudulent and unethical practices. 

Any person whose membership has been censured, 

suspended or expelled and who is at the 

time an owner of registered sheep may, at the discretion 

of the Board of Directors, be permitted to 

transfer the sheep then standing in his/her name 

on the records of the Association, or to register and 

transfer the progeny of such sheep, within six 

months after the date of the cancellation of his/her 

membership and/or the forfeiture of his/her rights 

in the Association upon payment of the required 

fees. 

Section 2. Charges Against Members. Upon a 

written complaint reflecting adversely upon the 

conduct of a member being presented to the 

Association’s staff or employee or President of the 

Association, the President shall direct the 

Association staff to cause the same to be investigated. 

Members shall cooperate fully with the Association 

in any investigation. 

Whenever, as a result of an investigation, the designated 

Association staff or employee with the written 

concurrence of the President or the Vice- 

President or the Board of Directors deems that the 

best interests of the Association require it, the designated 

Association staff or employee shall file with 

the Board of Directors charges in writing against 

the member based upon the information and investigation. 

The designated Association staff or employee shall 

forthwith cause a copy of such charges, together 

with a written notice of the time and place of the 

hearing thereof before the Board of Directors, to be 

served upon said member by certified or registered 

mail addressed to the members at the member’s 

last-known address as shown by the records of the 

Association not less than thirty (30) days prior to 

said hearing. 

Such notice shall contain a statement of the purpose 

and scope of the hearing and of the action 

which the Board of Directors has power to take 

regarding the person’s membership in the 

Association and shall further advise the member 

that the member may appear in person or by counsel 

and produce witnesses, affidavits, and documentary 

or other evidence. 

Section 3. Hearings. At the hearing upon said 

charges, both the person bringing them and the 

member against whom they have been brought 

shall have the right to be heard in person and by 

counsel and to produce whatever witnesses, affidavits, 

documentary or other evidence the member 

may desire to produce. Oral testimony shall be 

recorded. At the close of said hearing or as soon 

thereafter as may be reasonably possible, the 

Board of Directors shall make its finding as to the

charges and shall render its decision thereon, 

either censuring, suspending or expelling said 

member, or dismissing the charges. 

(a) When a member has been denied privileges 

of the Association or has been censured, suspended 

or expelled from membership, such action shall 

be communicated to the Association’s members. 

(b) Neither the Board of Directors, nor any of 

their members nor any officer or employee of the 

Association, shall become liable for the decisions 

rendered, put into effect or published as provided 

for in the Bylaws, nor for any action taken pertaining 

to the same. 

Section 4. Terminated or Altered Privileges. The 

Board of Directors shall establish a procedure for 

transaction registry or transfer work on sheep 

owned or previously owned by a person whose 

privileges has been terminated or altered under 

this article. 

ARTICLE IX. TERMINATION OR 

CURTAILMENT OF ASSOCIATION 

PRIVILEGES OF NONMEMBERS. 

Section 1. Nonmember Privileges and 

Penalties. The same rules and procedures set 

forth in Section 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Article VIII shall 

apply in dealing with nonmembers who avail themselves 

of privileges and services of the 

Association. The penalties for nonmembers shall 

be termination, limitation, or denial of registration 

or other services of the Association. 

ARTICLE X. GENERAL PROVISIONS. 

Section 1. Fiscal Year. The fiscal year of the 

Association shall be such as may be designated 

from time to time by the Board of Directors. In the 

absence of action by the Board of Directors, the fiscal 

year of the Association shall be from October 1 

through September 30 of the next calendar year. 

Section 2. Financial Controls. Funds of the 

Association shall be handled and expended in 

keeping with accepted budget and accounting 

practices under policies established by the Board 

of Directors. Funds kept in deposit accounts will be 

monitored at regular intervals to ensure that reasonable 

returns are achieved on investments. 

Section 3. Indemnification of Directors, 

Officers and Agents. Each person who is or was 

a Director, officer or agent of the Association or is 

or was serving at the request of the Association as 

a Director, officer or agent or another corporation, 

partnership, joint venture, trust or other enterprise, 

shall be indemnified by the Association as of right 

to the full extent permitted or authorized by the 

laws of the State of Missouri. The indemnification 

provided by this Bylaw provision shall be indemnification 

against expenses, including attorneys’ 

fees, judgments, fines and amounts paid in settlement 

actually and reasonable incurred by the person 

in connection with any action, suit or proceeding 

if the person acted in good faith and in a manner 

the person reasonably believed to be in or not 

opposed to the best interest of the Association, and 

with respect to any criminal action or proceeding, 

has no reasonable cause to believe the conduct 

was unlawful. 

No person shall be liable to the Association for any 

loss, damage, liability, or expense suffered by it on 

account of any action taken or omitted to be taken 

as a Director, officer or agent of the Association or 

of any other corporation, partnership, joint venture, 

trust, or other enterprise, that the person serves as 

a Director, officer or agent at the request of the 

Association, if the person exercise the same 

degree of care and skill as a prudent man would 

have exercised under the circumstances in the 

conduct of his own affairs, or if the person took, or 

omitted to take, such action in reliance upon the 

advice of counsel for the Association or for such 

other corporation, firm, or other enterprise that the 

person had no reasonable grounds to disbelieve. 

The indemnification provided by this section shall 

inure to the benefit of the heirs, executors and 

administrators of such person. 

Section 5. Corporate Offices. The Association 

may have such corporation offices within or without 

the State of Missouri as the Board of Directors may 

from time to time designate or as the business of 

the Association may require. 

Section 6. Records. The Association shall keep 

accurate books and records of account and shall 

also keep Minutes of the meetings of its members, 

Board of Directors and each committee having any 

of the authority of the Board of Directors. 

Section 7. Seal. The Board of Directors shall 

adopt, and may alter at its pleasure, the corporate 

seal, which shall have inscribed thereon the name 

of the corporation and the words: Corporation Seal 

– State of Missouri. The corporate seal may be 

used by causing it or a facsimile thereof to be 

impressed, affixed or reproduced in any manner. 

Section 8. Amendments. These Bylaws may from 

time to time be altered, amended or repealed, or 

new Bylaws may be adopted by the vote of twothirds 

of the members in good standing who cast 

mail ballots on such matter; provided, however, 

that the Bylaws shall not be altered, amended or 

repealed or new Bylaws be adopted unless the 

number of ballots cast would have been sufficient 

to constitute a quorum at a duly held meeting of the 

members. An official ballot containing the proposed 

amendments shall be mailed to each member with 

a postmark dated not less than thirty (30) days 

prior to the annual meeting. To vote on the amendments, 

a member must return the ballot to the 

Association’s designated location in an envelope 

postmarked at least ten days prior to the date of 

the annual meeting. 

Section 9. Duty of Applicants/Members. It shall 

be the duty of persons availing themselves of the 

privileges of the Association to promptly answer all 

letters or inquiries of the Association, and action on 

all matter dealing with their relations with the 

Association shall be deferred until said letters and 

inquiries are fully answered. 

Section 10. Limitation of Duty. It shall not be the 

duty of this Association to enforce any contract or 

agreement between buyers and sellers other than 

the furnishing of proper certificates of registry and 

transfer of ownership, or of the breeding records 

relating to such sheep or their progeny. 

ARTICLE XI. RULES OF REGISTRY. 

The Board of Directors shall establish Rules of 

Registry, which shall be printed on all applications 

for registration and transfer. The Rules of Registry 

may be amended or added to from time to time at 

the discretion of the Board of Directors. It shall be 

the duty of each member of the Association to 

obtain from the Association Application for Registry 

and Transfer forms with the most recent Rules of 

Registry printed thereon and to abide by the Rules 

of Registry. 

ARTICLE XII. STANDARD OF TYPE. 

The Board of Directors shall establish a Standard 

of Type which shall be accepted by the Association 

as a general description and model for Suffolk 

sheep. Such Standard shall not be considered 

absolute. Individual breeders and members must 

consider their own purposes and needs in evaluation 

of sheep by the standard, and judges should 

be encouraged to use the standard on the same 

basis. 

ARTICLE XIII. AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS 

The Board of Directors maintains its predecessor 

organizations’ responsibilities and authority including 

but not limited to the National Suffolk Sheep 

Foundation, the National Junior Suffolk Sheep 

Association and the National Sheep Genetics 

Registry.

Winner 

One $1000 USSA Scholarship was awarded 

in 2018 to Lily Skartvedt of Radcliffe, Iowa. 

Lily is currently a 

senior at South 

Hamilton High School. 

After graduation this 

spring, Lily will attend 

South Dakota State 

University to study 

Marketing and Animal 

Science and play volleyball. 

She plans to 

continue her grandfather’s 

and father’s 

Suffolk flock. 

Lily attends the National Jr. Suffolk Show 

every year. She’s served on the UJSSA Board 

of Directors for the past five years and is currently 

the Junior Board Treasurer. 

In addition to showing sheep, Lily is very 

involved with volleyball, the Talented and 

Gifted Program, National Honor Society, FFA, 

4-H and youth group. 

United Suffolk 

Sheep Association 

Scholarship 

The United Suffolk Sheep Association is 

offering one $1,000 Scholarships for graduating 

high school seniors or students enrolled at 

a college or university. Any United Junior 

Suffolk Sheep Association member who owns 

registered Suffolk sheep and whom is either a 

senior in high school or currently enrolled in a 

college or university is eligible. We encourage 

all eligible young breeders to join the competition. 

Funds will be paid directly to the winner’s 

college or university and may be used for academic 

pursuits only. To qualify an entrant must: 

1. Complete an application form, either 

word processed or typed, but not handwritten, 

which is available from the USSA Office or 

USSA website. 

2. Submit two letters of recommendation 

from teachers/professors, counselors or community 

leaders. 

3. Provide a current transcript of scholastic 

credits. 


Finalists will be selected from the applications 

received. Finalists will have a phone interview 

with the Scholarship Committee the end of 

June. The scholarship winners will be announced 

during the National Junior Suffolk Show at 

the All-American Junior Show. 

Prior recipients are eligible to apply, but 

preference will be given to those that have not 

previously received the scholarship. 

Applications must be received by the office 

no later than June 1. Winners will be selected 

entirely based on merit.

Scholarship

with Suffolk sheep. The eligible individuals

1. At least freshman in high school 

2. Have registered Suffolks 

3. Actively involved with Suffolk sheep at 

the local, state, regional and/or national 

level 

4. Possess a strong work ethic and values 

5. Have a minimum 3.0 grade point average 

6. Plan to attend a college or university with 

sheep production or research 

7. Must be a member of the United Junior 

Suffolk Sheep Association

UJSSA Director 

Applications 

UJSSA members interested in serving the 

Junior Association for a two-year term as a volunteer 

director must apply for the position by 

completing a Director Application. Juniors who 

have not served as a UJSSA Director must 

apply for to be a UJSSA Director Intern, a one 

year term, before being eligible to be a 

Director. Applications are reviewed by the 

UJSSA Coordinators and qualified applicants 

will interview at the Junior Show. All applicants 

will be notified whether or not they will be 

selected for the interview process. Candidates 

shall not have reached their 22nd birthday prior 

to January 1 of the year in which they finish

serving as directors effective with the 2019 

UJSSA Annual Meeting. 

UJSSA members elect the President (Vice 

President, Secretary and Treasurer are elected 

by the Directors from among themselves) during 

the UJSSA annual meeting. Directors who 

have served on the UJSSA Board of Directors 

for at least one year are eligible for election as 

officers of the organization. 

The nominations for President will be taken 

at the end of the banquet. Speeches by the 

nominees will take place during the Saturday 

evening banquet. The voting will be done by 

ballot at the banquet after speeches have been 

made. The new President will be announced at 

the banquet after the votes have been tallied. 

UJSSA officers and directors are expected 

to attend the 2019 and 2020 National Junior 

Suffolk Shows, assist with fundraising for the 

junior show and junior promotional projects, 

attend the UJSSA Director meeting at NAILE in 

Louisville, Kentucky in November and promote 

interest in the Suffolk breed and membership in 

UJSSA through various promotional and educational 

activities. 

UJSSA officers are expected to participate 

in all UJSSA Board conference calls. If a 

Director is absent for two consecutive meetings 

or conference calls they will be relieved of 

their position on the board.
