The Star Thursday May 16 2019 14 NEWS A SCROLL with thousands of good wishes from Australia has been presented to Christchurch in the wake of the mosque attacks. The 100m scroll – carrying more than 5000 messages – was handed over to Mayor Lianne Dalziel by Shekhar Kamat, a founder of GoodWishes, a Melbourne-based group that provides a platform for people to support each other in the aftermath of community trauma and natural disaster. The group was launched by Mr Kamat and his late partner, Maryjean Hunter, 16 years ago as a way of channelling positive thoughts to people around the world. “For Christchurch, it was POSITIVE: GoodWishes co-founder Shekhar Kamat presented positive messages to the city council. Scroll of good wishes important because the whole country was coming to terms with this tragic incident (along with us in Australia). It’s like something tragic happening to your neighbour,” he said. Ms Dalziel said the scroll adds to messages from across the world that “unites us in love and kindness.” “We are humbled by the extraordinary effort and care that has gone into the GoodWishes scroll and the compassion that embraces us all, no matter where we have been born or the way we express our faith,” she said. “It is a gesture that further empowers our capacity to build a stronger, more united community in our city.” news online at www.star.kiwi Getting away for Mother’s Day JUST IN case you didn’t read last week’s column, we all got away for a short family vacation/Mothers’ Day escape to Greymouth at the end of last week. Vittoria also only naps once a day now. It’s a tough transition for me. Whatever, don’t judge me parents of older kids. Pro-tip; a long car ride across the Southern Alps can give the illusion of a much longer nap time. As long as they can’t ask: “Are we there yet?” We managed to get away for our trip a mere 40min after our scheduled departure time. Vittoria went straight into her nap as we left the city, but with a couple of stops through the mountains (including the wonderful Otira Stagecoach Hotel) the total trip took longer than it would have on the bus. I actually enjoyed that though, it felt more like an old-school Kiwi whānau getaway. We even stayed in a holiday park and had a pub meal on the first night. Love it. We managed to get in a fair amount of sightseeing and relaxation in a couple of days, with Friday’s perfect weather making a great accompaniment to the views at Punakaiki. I even managed to sneak in a tour at the Monteith’s Brewery. VITTORIA & Matt Just me though, can you imagine taking a toddler to a brewery? For Vittoria, the best part was quite probably the playground at the holiday park. Unfortunately, it started pouring down with rain not long after we arrived so she only got to play on it for like five minutes on day one. You should have seen how heartbroken she was when I took her back to the room. There were “everyone-thinks- I’m-a-bad-parent” level crying and screaming. The next day, her reaction when she saw that it was still there and able to be played on was awesome. She actually said “wow.” She’s not even talking yet but the playground managed to coax out what could be considered an actual recognisable word. Damn, that’s a good playground. To finish off our trip we took even longer to come home on Saturday, adding in more stops. I think this could become a Mothers’ Day tradition.
