Ranulph Fiennes – Mad, Bad and
Dangerous to Know
Ranulph Fiennes has travelled to the most dangerous and
inaccessible places on earth, almost died countless times, lost
nearly half his fingers to frostbite, raised millions of pounds for
charity and been awarded a polar medal and an OBE. He has
been an elite soldier, an athlete, a mountaineer, an explorer, a
bestselling author and nearly replaced Sean Connery as James
Bond.
In his autobiography he describes how he led expeditions all over
the world and became the first person to travel to both poles on
land. He tells of how he discovered the lost city of Ubar in Oman
and attempted to walk solo and unsupported to the North Pole - the expedition that cost him
several fingers, and very nearly his life.
His most recent challenge was scaling the north face of the Eiger, one of the most awesome
mountaineering challenges in the world. Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes OBE, 3rd
Baronet, looks back on a life lived at the very limits of human endeavour.
See you in the Piazza
By Frances Mayes
The Roman Forum, the Leaning Tower, the Piazza San Marcothese
are the sights synonymous with Italy. But such landmarks
only scratch the surface of this magical country’s offerings. In
See You in the Piazza, Frances Mayes introduces us to the Italy
only the locals know, as she and her husband, Ed, eat and drink
their way through fifteen regions - from Friuli to Sardinia. Along
the way, she seeks out the cultural and historic gems not found
in traditional guidebooks. Frances conjures the enchantment of
the backstreets, the hubbub of the markets, the dreamlike wonder
of that space between lunch and dinner when a city cracks open
to those who would wander or when a mind is drawn into the
pages of a delicious book - and discloses to us the secrets that only someone who is on
intimate terms with a place could find.
A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home
By Tembi Locke
A poignant and transporting cross-cultural love story set against
the lush backdrop of the Sicilian countryside, where one woman
discovers the healing powers of food, family, and unexpected
grace in her darkest hour. It was love at first sight when Tembi
met professional chef, Saro, on a street in Florence. There was
just one problem: Saro’s traditional Sicilian family did not approve
of him marrying a black American woman, an actress no less.
However, the couple, heartbroken but undeterred, forges on. They
build a happy life in Los Angeles, with fulfilling careers, deep
friendships and the love of their lives: a baby girl they adopt at
birth. Eventually, they reconcile with Saro’s family just as he faces a formidable cancer that
will consume all their dreams. From Scratch chronicles three summers Tembi spends in
Sicily with her daughter, Zoela, as she begins to piece together a life without her husband in
his tiny hometown hamlet of farmers. Where once Tembi was estranged from Saro’s family
and his origins, now she finds solace and nourishment—literally and spiritually—at her
mother in law’s table. In the Sicilian countryside, she discovers the healing gifts of simple
fresh food, the embrace of a close knit community, and timeless traditions and wisdom that
light a path forward. All along the way she reflects on her and Saro’s incredible romance—an
indelible love story that leaps off the pages.
