Mauger’s bid for council
Businessman joins
election contest
• By Matt Slaughter
WELL-KNOWN businessman
Phil Mauger is making a bid
to win a city council seat in
October’s local body elections.
Mr Mauger, who lives in
Avonhead, has targeted the
Burwood Ward where he will
try to unseat three-time
councillor Glenn Livingstone.
Mr Mauger is head of
Maugers Contracting
Ltd, a third-generation
family business that had
its beginnings in North
Beach decades ago.
“It’s time to put my
money where my mouth
is so to speak and actually
do it rather than just
sit on the sidelines,” he
said.
“I think the council’s crying
out for some people with a
little bit more business acumen
to stop having over-spends on
things.”
Lowering rates and progressing
earthquake repairs would
be his main priorities if he was
voted in.
“You can’t just keep going
around cranking up people’s rates.
“Rates increases must be held
Please get in touch with
Glenn
Livingstone
Authorised by Hon Megan Woods, Shop 6, McCathy St, Christchurch
to between 2.5 per cent and 3.5
per cent. The current predicted
five per cent increase over the
next 10 years means more
money coming out of households
that are already finding it
hard to make ends meet.
“Much of the earthquake
rebuild still remains ahead of us.
We have not returned
to business-as-usual
mode. The remaining
rebuild has to be
affordable for ratepayers,
and our rates must
stop rising unnecessarily.”
Mr Mauger, who is
standing as an independent,
said his
contracting background
would help in
decision-making.
“We only have one chance to
plan a new future for our red
zone land. We are told that $800
million will be spent on this
area over the next 30 years. My
contracting background will be
hugely valuable at the city council
table, ensuring money is spent
wisely and with a common sense
approach to provide a good
outcome for generations to come.”
AN INTERESTING political move from
one of the city’s best known businessmen
(see page 1).
Phil Mauger, who lives in Avonhead,
has his sights set on the east – incumbent
Glenn Livingstone’s Burwood Ward council
seat. It will be a tough campaign for both.
Mauger heads Mauger Construction Ltd, a company which
spans three generations and came out of the original family
business, a service station in North Beach.
Livingstone will no doubt try to exploit the fact Mauger lives
out west.
But the 61-year-old is adamant this won’t be an Achilles heel.
He can push on the council table for improvements to the ward
from anywhere, he says.
Keeping rates in check by stopping unnecessary council overspending
looks like being his key platform.
Let the battle begin.
Projects to improve bus service
Local
News
Now
In Brief
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PEAK TIME traffic is causing
buses travelling on Halswell
and Lincoln Rds to run behind
schedule.
But residents relying on the
transport system may have to
wait until 2021 for the problem
to be resolved.
THe Orange Line and No. 60
bus running behind schedule
as a result of
busy traffic has
been raised by
the Halswell
Residents’
Association.
In a
submission
David Hawke
to the city
council’s
Annual Plan, the association
has thrown its support behind
several public transport projects
proposed in the draft Annual
Plan 2019-2020 to help reduce
the problem.
City-wide projects include bus
priority electronic installations
delivery project, and public
transport ITS installations.
They will provide real-time
travel information to passengers
waiting at bus stops including
those at Halswell.
THe projects are anticipated to
be undertaken over the next two
to three years.
DELAY: The Halswell Residents’ Association says the Orange
Line often runs behind schedule at peak traffic times.
THe association’s secretary
David Hawke said making the
buses faster and more predictable
has three components.
“One of these is bus priority
lanes, another is passengers
knowing exactly when their bus
will arrive, and the remaining
component is speeding the
transit of buses by giving
them priority at signalised
intersections,” he said.
Since the start of the year,
Environment Canterbury has
received four complaints over the
timeliness of the Orange Line
and 60 routes.
Mr Hawke said the two
projects complement the city
council’s $13 million plans to
widen Lincoln Rd between
Curletts and Wrights Rds. The
project is planned to begin in
2020/21 financial year.
An Environment Canterbury
spokeswoman said the Lincoln
Rd project will improve
travel times for Orange Line
passengers.
“We supported that project
and it is part of an ongoing
process. We need to get public
transport priorities all the way
from Halswell right through to
the central city.”
Halswell Community Project
chairwoman Chrys Horn said
the buses are generally full at
rush hour and it would be good
to see bus lanes installed in
Halswell.
“THere are no bus lanes here
and because we have grown so
fast, we have got a lot of traffic
going into the city,” she said.
Dr Horn said she prefers to
cycle, but when she has used
the buses, there have been times
when they have not run on
schedule.
Last year, a Ministry of
Transport survey found public
transport in the city was the
lowest in the country with nearly
two-thirds of its population
choosing to avoid the bus.
From January 2017 to
January 2018, it was found
only 35 per cent of people used
buses.
“We need to be quite bold in
setting it up because we have got
one of the lowest public transport
user numbers of any place in New
Zealand,” Dr Horn said.
But an ECan spokeswoman
said for the current financial
year, patronage is up 1.5 per cent.
She said this could be due to
more people travelling to and
from the city.
NEW HOME FOR GECKOS
More native geckos have been
given a new home in Riccarton
geckos from the Gollans Bay
quarry, beside Lyttelton Port, and
released them in Riccarton Bush.
The eastern part of the Gollans
Bay quarry has not been quarried
before and is being used as part
of the Lyttelton Port Company’s
Te Awaparahi Bay reclamation
geckos was carried out in 2012 as
part of the Sumner Rd recovery
project.
Less trees
for middle of
Riccarton Rd
A PLANNED tree-planted
median strip in Riccarton Rd will
be shortened and have fewer trees
to ensure there are no barriers for
emergency services.
The median island will run
between Clarence and Matipo
Sts and is part of a project to
replace and upgrade outdated
underground pipes and rebuild
the road to accommodate bus
priority measures between
Harakeke and Matipo Sts.
City council transport planning
and delivery manager Lynette
Ellis said the adjustments will
ensure that the median island is
easier to negotiate for emergency
services.
The median will help make
Riccarton Rd a pedestrianfriendly
destination for shoppers
and visitors, with streetscape
enhancements and trees creating
a traffic calming effect.
The trees will remain through
the central shopping area of
Riccarton Rd.
However, there will be 10 fewer
trees than originally planned at
the outer edges of the project and
around intersections.
Work on the median strip
is expected to start in April
2020.
Call for policy after bottle store fight
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A LONG battle to stop an
off-licence liquor store from
going into Halswell has raised
questions over why the city
doesn’t have its own Local
Alcohol Policy.
THe Halswell Residents’
Association has requested the
city council develops its LAP
policy after appealing against
the decision allowing Bottle-O
Halswell to open a store at 29
Ensign St.
THe association’s secretary
David Hawke said the drawnout
process has highlighted
“significant deficiencies” in
alcohol inspectors and the
knowledge base of agencies and
district licensing committee
members.
“THe alcohol licensing
managers and their staff are
forced to rely on the general
provision of the Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act 2012 in framing
their recommendations on each
licence application.”
Mr Hawke said the act is very
high level and the objectors have
no real guidance as to whether
they are wasting their time
or if they have a chance in a
successful appeal.
“THe same is true of potential
applicants, they have only the act
TIRED: A fight to stop an off-licence liquor store from opening
in Halswell has a residents’ association questioning why the
city doesn’t have a Local Alcohol Policy.
to guide them in preparing their
business case,” he said.
THe city council began
developing a draft LAP in 2013
but decided not to continue with
the process last year.
City council’s head of strategic
policy Emma Davis said it
instead resolved background
work on the issue including
identifying any alcohol-related
harm issues should continue.
THis information will form a
report which will be provided
in the new term following the
October elections which will
determine if a LAP is the best
tool to address alcohol-related
harm.
In December, Bottle-O
Halswell Ltd was granted an
application to open the store, but
the decision was appealed by the
association.
THe hearing for the appeal will
be held on July 30.
In March, Western News
reported Bottle-O Halswell Ltd
was negotiating to lease the
premises on 29 Ensign St instead
of buying it.
Director and shareholder
Wendy Gibbons did not respond
to confirm if it would be leasing
the premises.
Mr Hawke said the appeal
against the bottle store had
forced the association to be sidelined
from doing other projects
in the community since August
last year.
“It is more than time as well.
It is people’s headspace. It has
had a major effect on us that’s for
sure,” he said.
Under The Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act 2012, a LAP can
allow for communities to limit
the locations of licences in areas
or near certain types of facilities
such as schools or churches.
Conditions can be imposed
on groups of licences, such as a
“one-way door” condition which
allows patrons to leave premises
but not enter or re-enter after a
certain time.
Fresh ideas for residents’ association
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
JOHN REDDIFORD knew
nothing about the Ilam and
Upper Riccarton Residents’
Association before he was
appointed chairman.
He even jokes he was appointed
in “quite a controversial
manner” as he lives out of the
zone resident associations’ zone
on Hamilton Ave.
But after being asked by former
chairwoman Sue Chamberlain
if he was interested in the
role, he was prompted to take up
the opportunity.
But Mr Reddiford, an investment
adviser, is passionate about
the Ilam/Upper Riccarton area
with hopes it can be turned into a
social centre for the community.
“We don’t have many places to
eat or drink. I’d like to see a bit
of a centre for the area,” he said.
His first meeting will be on
Wednesday where he wants to
set goals with the association on
what they want to achieve and
how they will achieve them.
With his office based in St
Albans, Mr Reddiford takes
inspiration from the area.
He said it has strong community
initiatives such as The
St Albans Pavilion and Pool Inc
fundraising for the new Edgeware
swimming pool.
INSPIRATION: John
Reddiford, the new
chairman of the Ilam
and Upper Riccarton
Residents’ Association
wants to have a close
relationship with
Canterbury University.
“I just want to see it become
like certain areas – like Merivale
has got Merivale Mall. That we
can put on things for our residents
– events they can go to.
“At the end of the year, we will
have the Ngaio Marsh Theatre. I
want people to say I live in Ilam
and I am proud of it,” Mr Reddiford
said.
Although he has only lived
in the Ilam area for about two
years, he has had a long association
with Canterbury University.
In 1972 he studied history,
economics and management
there. Between 2010 to last year,
he was the president of the university’s
alumni.
Mr Reddiford will attend his
first meeting next month to start
planning for university’s 150th
anniversary in 2023.
“We have got to have a close
relationship with the university
because there are 16,000 students
there,” he said.
Mr Reddiford has a strong background
in business having worked
for a range of companies including
as an area sales manager for NZI
Life, a national sales manager at
Fidelity Life Assurance Company
Ltd and is the co-chairman of
Planet Financial Ltd.
When asked by Western News
if he would consider putting his
name forward for the upcoming
elections, Mr Reddiford said he
had “never thought of it.”
“All I want to do is make sure
Christchurch is getting back on
its feet rather than being known
in London or New York for
earthquakes and people killing
each other,” he said.
Mrs Chamberlain said he lives
in Ilam and has a great interest
in supporting the community.
“I think he has got a great
rapport with the people and is a
great leader. He has got leadership
skills, I think that is what
residents need,” she said.
Mauger to stand
for council
•From page 1
Cr Livingstone was elected in
2010, polling 4848 votes. He held
the seat again in 2013 (6862 votes)
and in 2016 (4797 votes).
Said Cr Livingstone: “You also
need a social and environmental
bottom line, so you need a multidimensional
approach.’’
Cr Livingstone believed the fact
he lived in the Burwood Ward, and
Mr Mauger didn’t, would also be to
his advantage.
“If he lives in close proximity, that
might be okay, but that’s quite some
distance. I think they’ll have a question
(voters) over how he is going to
relate to them.”
Said Mr Mauger: “I feel I can do
equally as good for the people in
Burwood by my passion for the
area, my roots for the area. Living
there wouldn’t make any difference
to how well I would work for
Burwood.”
Cr Livingstone said his campaign
would be business as usual.
“I treat every candidate as if I’m
up against Richie McCaw.”
In 2015, Mr Mauger was
seriously injured on his way to
compete in the Bathurst 12 Hour
race in New South Wales when his
rental car was rear-ended by a fuel
tanker.
He suffered multiple fractures
and a collapsed lung and was in a
coma for three days.
Time for council to focus on Avonhead
Avonhead
Community
Group
chairman
Somnath
Sarkar
Bagchi writes
about the
need for the
city council to invest in the
suburb
When we shifted to Avonhead
from Fendalton in 2004, it was a
suburb with character.
Part rural, part residential, it
drew families with school-going
children like my own because
of its proximity to good public
schools and convenient traveltime
to the city centre.
The majority of our neighbours
were friendly, retired
couples.
Avonhead was no Fendalton
or Merivale but it was diverse
and had a sense of pride.
The roads were well surfaced,
the street gutters clean of leaves,
the parks regularly mowed.
Avonhead Mall was the main
establishment, with Monteith’s
Brewery Bar as its busy drawcard.
Cafe Euro came up in the mid-
2000s and became a fixture for
semi-social meetings.
WAITING: Avonhead Community Group chairman Somnath
Sarkar Bagchi said the long-planned sporting facility for
Avonhead Park, which backs onto the cemetery, remains
indefinitely on hold.
Fast track to 2019 and Avonhead
has lost that vibe of being a
suburb that takes pride in itself.
The mall looks tired and has
one or two empty retail spaces.
Monteith’s is still going strong
but Cafe Euro has been closed
for several months with silence
hovering over its future.
The semi-rural character is
gone, a sprawling retirement
village takes up what used to be
former pasture land.
The earthquakes have not
been kind to the pavements.
The street gutters are now leafstrewn
and many patches of the
roadside get surface flooding.
It sometimes takes time for the
lawns to be mown.
Many of the elderly couples
whom we knew when we first
moved in have either passed
away or shifted to retirement
villages.
Some of these changes are the
inevitable result of time.
Others are not.
The city council’s spending
priorities changed understandably
after the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes.
Avonhead, which was fortunate
to have escaped relatively
unscathed, dropped out of the
city council’s list of areas to
focus on.
No one can complain that this
was the case for the first five or
six years after the earthquakes.
Eight years on, however, it
increasingly feels like the city
council has taken Avonhead for
granted.
Other suburbs have got new
roads and malls while Avonhead
has got patchwork repairs.
The long-planned sporting
facility for Avonhead Park remains
indefinitely on hold.
The efforts to take care of the
suburb and its heritage, namely
the cemetery, have come mainly
from the local community
group.
When can residents expect the
city council to focus its attention
back to Avonhead?
Hornby’s traffic woes
Deb Flanagan – Wait until
you get another 1500 gravel truck
movements a day choking up
the State Highway 1 from Fulton
Hogan’s proposed new quarry.
And the motorway extension is
being overrated. People travelling
in from Rolleston heading for
city centre or Riccarton will still
go via Hornby as they won’t want
to be stuck in the increasing
traffic jam in Sydenham
including all the big trucks heading
to port.
Jo-Anne Clark – They need
to put a right-turn light on the
northbound lights at the Main
South Rd and Carmen Rd intersection.
Just like they have on the
other three lights there.
Heather Wilkins – It doesn’t
help that at the lights there aren’t
always separate turning lanes.
Where there are turning lanes,
they all need to turn like they do
at the main set at Shands Rd and
Main South Rd. That would help
speed the traffic up. The Buchanans/Carmen
Rds lights don’t. The
right turning light onto Carmen
Rd from the Pound Rd end of
Buchanans Rd, turns green at the
same time as the through traffic.
Then you are lucky to get one car
through.
FUNDRAISER: Hornby High School teacher Juliet Buenaventura
and her band performing a Filipino song.
Concert for a cause
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
SCHOOLS
HORNBY HIGH School has
showcased its brightest talent to
help fundraise for those impacted
by the Christchurch terror
attacks.
The concert, organised by the
school’s team of prefects has
raised more than $530.
The money will go towards
supporting the family of the
Springs Rd Dairy, an affected
family at the school and for a
man who works at GAS Hornby.
Prefect Shardey Jade, 17, said it
wanted to show how important it
was to bring the school together
to support those affected.
“Every term we have made a
goal to run events. Our goal was
to arrange a fundraiser so we
could bring the Hornby community
together,” she said.
The Hornby community was
hugely affected by the attacks.
The owner of the Springs Rd
Dairy, Junaid Ismail died at Majhid
Al Noor on March 15.
A father of a student at Hornby
High School and a man who
works at GAS Hornby was injured
during the attacks.
About 100 people including the
performers attended the event.
The concert featured 14 acts
including performances from the
school choir Voices With Soul,
guitar and vocal soloists and
group numbers from the school’s
staff.
Miss Jade said the school does
not yet have the full total yet for
the fundraiser with donations
still yet to come in from several
teachers who were unable to attend
the concert.
Principal Robin Sutton said it
was an amazing event and speaks
so much for the leadership, heart
and passion the students have.
Speaker stolen from school
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
AN OUTDOOR speaker stolen
from South Hornby School may
have been built into a bicycle’s
sound system.
Police are continuing to follow
up on the theft of a speaker from
the primary school on May 5 at
11.43pm.
Three young men were caught
on CCTV footage at the time of
the incident.
Principal Wendy Huriwai said
it was from talking to police she
learnt it was likely the speaker
was stolen to mount onto a bicycle
to create into a sound system.
Three panel sheets were damaged
in total and two outdoor
speakers will have to be replaced
after an unsuccessful attempt
was made to steal a second
speaker.
The attempt damaged the second
speaker beyond repair.
A NEW building to help an
into the neighbourhood.
The Hei Hei Broomfield Community
Mrs Huriwai said it is “extremely
disappointing” as the
money going towards repairing
the damage cannot be spent on
other projects in the school.
The school did not yet have an
estimation on what the cost of
installing the new speakers and
repairing the panels would be.
Last year police were investigating
a spate of thefts of
outdoor speakers from schools
across the city after 19 were stolen
in the space of a month.
Mrs Huriwai said: “We have
a beautiful school which is well
resourced to help our tamariki
meet their full potential.
“Our school community works
hard to provide the best for our
children but unfortunately, some
greater and are willing to damage
our buildings and steal from
our children.”
Wall on the radar for
national baseball honours
• By Jacob Page
MULTI-TALENTED Selwyn
baseballer Te Ahu Wall is
starting to turn heads on a
national level.
The 16-year-old who can pitch,
hit and play the outfield was a
nominee for New Zealand Baseball
under-19 player of the year at
the annual awards a fortnight ago.
While he did not win it, the
Canterbury age-group representative
hoped it could lead to
him being part of more national
teams.
Te Ahu, who lives in Rolleston
and attends St Thomas’ of Canterbury
where he plays flanker in
the second XV during the winter
months, said his nomination
came as a shock.
“I was surprised to be up for
the award but it was an honour,’’
he said.
Te Ahu made the Canterbury
under-19 team and won the Canterbury
senior baseball competition
with Selwyn and was part of
his club’s under-19 team which
finished fourth in the country
two months.
Te Ahu said he preferred to
play centre field and believed his
hitting had been the aspect of his
game which had improved the
most over the past 12 months.
“I’ve been getting more contact
and hitting the ball harder.
ACTION: Selwyn baseballer Te Ahu Wall can play three
positions in the field and has a promising future ahead of him.
“I like getting a pitch I can hit
as soon as I see it.
“My throwing from the outfield
has improved and become
more accurate,” he said.
He said winning the Canterbury
title with Selwyn was a
highlight.
Te Ahu, who was 13 when he
started playing baseball with his
WESTERN NEWS
friends, said he also plays softball
when he can and he just enjoyed
playing both games in the summer.
Te Ahu said he watched a lot
of Major League Baseball and he
liked watching Boston Red Sox
outfielder Mookie Betts.
“The aim for me is to be part of
a national team.’’
HEALTH & AWARENESS
Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior
clients visit complaining of pain in one or
both hips.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a
back muscle could also be the cause, as
shown in the image.
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
Hip muscle that causes hip pain
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
and wellbeing.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the hip, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the hip in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client
Back hip muscle that causes hip pain
will know if it is going to work for them or
not, without financial commitment.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Centuries old folk
remedy supports
good health!
More health
benefits with
Advanced
Omega-3-PC
Fish Oil
It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good
health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the
recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with
a higher amounts of omega-3 in the diet are known to have lower
cardiovascular disease and in many cases better overall health. Recent
research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the
ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing
essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain
good health. Fish oil supplements have become hugely popular
for this reason. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3
fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish however naturally contain
omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the
phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-3-PC sets new standards in fish oil as
it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids.
Studies have shown GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC to be far better
absorbed leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the
organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-3-PC is produced from fresh wild
deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold
extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP standards and is
molecularly distilled to remove any containments, toxins and heavy
metals like mercury.
Further information on this revolutionary new fish oil and how
it may benefit you is available from the Natural Health Advisers,
at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 101 Seaview Road, New
Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. We are always happy to help!
A fermented liquid health tonic offers an array of
powerful health benefits. It is none other than the
popular apple cider vinegar or ACV. Since the time
of Hippocrates – the “Father of Medicine” – ACV
has been renowned for its curative properties.
In his popular book “ARTHRITIS and FOLK
MEDICINE”, DR. D.C. Jarvis reports how he found
that Vermonters who regularly consumed ACV and
Honey had excellent health with many putting in
a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well
into their eighties. He also noted the effects of ACV
and H on arthritis to be remarkable with many
patients reporting almost total relief after taking a
course of the mixture. Dr. Jarvis surmised that the
acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted
calcium deposits and helped the body control
calcium use. He also noted that Vermonters who
consumed ACV and H around meal time had
excellent blood pressure and circulation. The reason
he found was that protein foods thickened the
blood and vinegar thinned it. As the blood thickens
it cannot pass as easily and quickly through the
blood vessels and capillaries. This poor blood flow
would reduce cellular health by limiting nutrients
to the cells as well as waste elimination from the
cells. To prevent cell damage the body naturally
increases blood pressure but this puts more stress
on the blood vessels, organs and heart. Having ACV
and H with meals will help prevent protein raising
the blood pressure. It also contributes to a feeling
of greater well-being because the thinner blood
circulates quickly and more easily through the
blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis found regular consumption
of CV and H to be an excellent health tonic with
numerous health attributes. Also when used at
the onset of complaints such as the common cold,
sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever and childhood
diseases such as chicken pox and measles, was
accompanied by an improvement in the condition
with symptoms either disappearing or the
conditions were extremely mild and soon over.
More recent research on ACV has shown it to be
highly effective at controlling blood sugar levels.
Elevated blood sugar is associated not only with
diabetes, but with numerous health problems
from premature aging to multiple chronic
diseases. In a study published in Diabetes Care
Journal, ACV improved insulin sensitivity during
high-carb meals by 19-34% and significantly
lowered blood glucose and insulin responses.
Another Japanese study found ACV can help you
feel fuller, eat less and lose weight. Participants
in the 12 week study were found to have reduced
waist circumference and lower triglyceride levels
therefore reducing their cardiovascular risk levels.
Another observational study conducted by Harvard
showed that women who ate salad dressings with
ACV had a reduced risk of heart disease.
ACV is highly nutritious as it contains all the
goodness of the apple in a form that is readily
accepted by the body. Scientists have found over
90 different substances in ACV, among them 20
important trace elements, minerals and essential
enzymes. A scientific study at the Shizuka
University in Japan has proven ACV to have potent
antioxidant benefits (It can destroy free radicals,
which are a major factor in ageing.) and also the
ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the
blood vessels.
Good health starts with good digestion and
assimilation of nutrients. ACV taken before food
will stimulate and promote healthy digestion and
assimilation of vital nutrients for good health. A
well-functioning digestive system helps prevent
disease by neutralising any toxic substances that
enter the body.
It is important to note not all ACV is produced
in the traditional way and results are likely to prove
disappointing with these other vinegars.
Marshall’s Premium ACV and ACV with
20% Manuka Honey is produced in
Canterbury from Organic whole
apples in the traditional way. It is
double strength so you can use
less.
NOT all FISH OIl IS CreaTed eQUal!
ONLY GO OMEGA-PC retains the natural Phospholipids that have been shown to be so beneficial for Good
Health BUT are lost in other brands of fish oil due to the less natural manufacturing processes used!
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL!
Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally
contain Omega-3 in a triglyceride & phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process. GO OMEGA-PC is produced using a new more natural cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. Studies show GO OMEGA-PC offers superior absorption with
increased omega-3 fatty acids in organs giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC OFFERS:
• Superior absorption of vital Omega-3, as
shown in research
• Advanced new cold extraction better
preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish
• Naturally contains phospholipids to
support cellular health
• Contains vitamin D3 to support immune,
bone & cardiovascular health
• Supports cardiovascular health - Countries with
a higher Omega-3 intake have much lower rates
of heart disease
• Supports blood circulation, healthy cholesterol &
healthy blood pressure
• Supports joint health, joint mobility & repair
• Supports overall health & wellbeing
Bathroom
ventilation
The extraction of air from the bathroom opening a window can draw cold air into
should be a priority for all houses and the bathroom and blow the smelly, moisture
commercial buildings.
laden bathroom air into the house.
Bathrooms can generate a large quantity Modern houses are built to be very
of steam and odours. It is important this airtight and require mechanical ventilation
compromised air does not circulate around such as extraction fans or heat exchanger
the house.
systems. Although older houses can be
Bathroom odours can be unpleasant, draughty, the air often flows in the wrong
especially when near living, sleeping or direction. Therefore, they also usually
working areas.
require mechanical ventilation to keep the
The moisture generated by showers and air quality higher.
baths can be damaging to your home and The quality of the air we breathe affects our
furnishings and be a major contribution health and ability to perform. We breathe
to condensation. Damp houses are not a in and out approximately 20,000 litres of
healthy environment for anyone to live in, air every day. It is therefore very important
especially for children or other vulnerable to ensure good air quality indoors through
the commercial and domestic markets.
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Are you struggling with the heat of
Summer or wanting to get organised for
Winter? With the ever changing weather
patterns, heat pumps have the flexibility
of being able to heat and cool which is an
advantage no other appliance can offer. This
represents great value for your investment
as you can use it all year round. The team
at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you
cool this Summer either at home or work.
Enviro Master supplies, installs and services
all the leading brands including Panasonic,
Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means
our team can show you which system and
brand will best suit your needs.
With new regulations coming in for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
now is a great time to beat the 1st of
July deadline. Inadequate heating and
ventilation can lead to mould growth and
dampness in your property, leading to
costlier maintenance and an unhealthy
living environment. Providing a fixed
heater with a higher heat output and lower
running costs, like a heat pump, will enable
your tenants to heat the area effectively.
It will also discourage them from using
unflued gas heaters which can make a
house damp and mouldy.
It is important to remember, when
selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s
warranty does not cover the installation
and consumers could be responsible for
any repair or damage caused to the system
due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s
five-star installation guarantee ensures
correct installation, and a demonstration
so customers have an understanding on
how it will best meet their needs.
holding a hearing for the Public
In the past year, the district
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this week.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
