FUNDRAISER: Hornby High School teacher Juliet Buenaventura
and her band performing a Filipino song.
Concert for a cause
SCHOOLS
HORNBY HIGH School has
showcased its brightest talent to
help fundraise for those impacted
by the Christchurch terror
attacks.
The concert, organised by the
school’s team of prefects has
raised more than $530.
The money will go towards
supporting the family of the
Springs Rd Dairy, an affected
family at the school and for a
man who works at GAS Hornby.
Prefect Shardey Jade, 17, said it
wanted to show how important it
was to bring the school together
to support those affected.
“Every term we have made a
goal to run events. Our goal was
to arrange a fundraiser so we
could bring the Hornby community
together,” she said.
The Hornby community was
hugely affected by the attacks.
The owner of the Springs Rd
Dairy, Junaid Ismail died at Majhid
Al Noor on March 15.
A father of a student at Hornby
High School and a man who
works at GAS Hornby was injured
during the attacks.
About 100 people including the
performers attended the event.
The concert featured 14 acts
including performances from the
school choir Voices With Soul,
guitar and vocal soloists and
group numbers from the school’s
staff.
Miss Jade said the school does
not yet have the full total yet for
the fundraiser with donations
still yet to come in from several
teachers who were unable to attend
the concert.
Principal Robin Sutton said it
was an amazing event and speaks
so much for the leadership, heart
and passion the students have.
Speaker stolen from school
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
AN OUTDOOR speaker stolen
from South Hornby School may
have been built into a bicycle’s
sound system.
Police are continuing to follow
up on the theft of a speaker from
the primary school on May 5 at
11.43pm.
Three young men were caught
on CCTV footage at the time of
the incident.
Principal Wendy Huriwai said
it was from talking to police she
learnt it was likely the speaker
was stolen to mount onto a bicycle
to create into a sound system.
Three panel sheets were damaged
in total and two outdoor
speakers will have to be replaced
after an unsuccessful attempt
was made to steal a second
speaker.
The attempt damaged the second
speaker beyond repair.
A NEW building to help an
organisation continue providing
community support to the Hei
Hei/Broomfield area, has rolled
into the neighbourhood.
The Hei Hei Broomfield Community
Development Trust, also
two smaller offices will give the
Mrs Huriwai said it is “extremely
disappointing” as the
money going towards repairing
the damage cannot be spent on
other projects in the school.
The school did not yet have an
estimation on what the cost of
installing the new speakers and
repairing the panels would be.
Last year police were investigating
a spate of thefts of
outdoor speakers from schools
across the city after 19 were stolen
in the space of a month.
Mrs Huriwai said: “We have
a beautiful school which is well
resourced to help our tamariki
meet their full potential.
“Our school community works
hard to provide the best for our
children but unfortunately, some
young men feel their need is
greater and are willing to damage
our buildings and steal from
our children.”
do more for the area.
building . . . people want
a place where they can go and
