Changing direction is nothing new for the Knobels. During the depression in the early 30’s, Karl, a carpenter, worked for his father, Charles, a home builder, and was out of a job. His new direction shifted to the basement of his small, one-bedroom home located at 1431 Central Ave. in Wilmette. As his family began to grow, small children and noisy workshops in the basement were not compatible. This time the direction was out to the alley, where he built a three car garage, which served his growing business until 1948. When his land was purchased by the school board for the expansion of Logan (now McKenzie) School, and he was forced to move. He chose a lot at 1804-08 Wilmette Ave. Not wanting to share that new space at 1808, he constructed a two-part building at 1218 Washington, also in Wilmette. Being creative in his design and building skills, Karl decided to join with others, who were forming an association to better utilize the explosion of new products and business innovations. In 1968, Karl, and his new associate, son Peter, joined the American Institute of Kitchen Dealers, and became Certified Kitchen Dealers, which included the yearly requirement of becoming familiar with new and related products as well as in service experience. They were joined by son Paul, who then also became certified as a Kitchen and Bath Dealer, by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, which had been or formed from the AIKD. Believing that making and maintaining good relationships was a priority in our lives, the expansion of the family business into additional branch outlets was rejected. Instead, Karl and Paul dedicated many years of service and leadership to the Wilmette Optimist Club. Peter used his volunteer efforts with the NKBA, where he served both locally and nationally, and at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wilmette. Supporting the Wilmette Baseball Association, Karl umpired games and sponsored a team every year, as we still do. Paul and Peter were coaches for their sons’ teams, and enjoy the “new” Roemer Park. Now that you know pretty much about us and our 86-year-old family business, what does all that have to do with Knobel’s kitchen, bath and other remodeling work? Among other things, it tells that we are experienced experts in design and problem solving, featuring new products and concepts into the plans suggested for your project, regardless of its size. We use our experienced suppliers, installers and sub contractors, and supply supervision and satisfaction of client expectations about on time and on budget completion. We do this on a lot of projects, and upon the completion of those projects, for a lot of clients, who reciprocate by sharing their relationship with us to a lot of their family members, friends and neighbors. It also gives us the opportunity to meet and be of service to new people and their neighbors. Be in touch. 22ndCenturyMedia.com Summer Fun Guide 22nd century media | May 23, 2019 | 17 Awakenings Holistic Wellness promotes health through hands-on healing Kelly Moretta, owner of Awakenings Holistic Wellness, helps people move toward balance and wholeness with Reiki Bio-field Energy Therapy. Reiki is a Japanese hands-on healing technique that promotes overall health and well-being by restoring balance to the body’s energy system at physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. “Reiki is one of the fastest growing complementary healing techniques,” she said. “It is widely practiced in homes, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and spas throughout the world.” Clinical studies have shown that Reiki can relax the body, relieve pain, improve sleep, clear toxins and boost the immune system. Reiki benefits the healthy and those with illness and is valuable for all ages. It is widely used for stress management and relaxation. For people with chronic illness, regular treatments will help manage symptoms and enhance conventional treatment. Moretta works with her clients to customize each Reiki session based on their specific needs because of her passion for helping others. Moretta is a Reiki Master in the Usui/Tibetian, Ascension and Reiju systems of healing, among other modalities. She holds certification with the International Association of Reiki Professionals and the International Center for Reiki Training. As the founder and coordinator of North Shore Reiki and Energy Healers, she has created a local community for both experienced energy healers and those interested in experiencing and learning about the benefits of Reiki energy work. Moretta is also a Reiki Master Teacher offering certification classes for those wanting to enhance and empower their lives with this harmonizing energy. “Reiki’s gentle and nurturing energy is an ancient technique that is the wave of the future,” she said. “For those looking for a more holistic approach to health and wellness the opportunities are endless.” Moretta discovered energy healing through her own need for healing. After leading a successful corporate management position while raising two young daughters, she suddenly found herself in need of medical help. The stress and demands of a fastpaced career and family life had taken its toll. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition similar to lupus that demanded she immediately pay more attention to herself. Doctors offered a host of pharmaceuticals, but she knew the key was in making life changes and embracing holistic mind and body wellness techniques to heal herself. “I began practicing yoga and meditation,” Moretta said. “Later, I received my first Reiki session, and although initially skeptical, I immediately became a believer and an outspoken advocate of this transformative healing art.” Having experienced the profound healing that she did, her passion to share it with as many people as possible was ignited. Moretta left her corporate career and began studying different modalities of energy healing, advancing to Master Teacher with Reiki as her chosen specialty. Along with her healing treatments, Moretta is also a certified yoga instructor. She often combines Reiki, breath work and meditation with her clients for a truly transformative experience.
