FROM OUR
PRESIDENT
Welcome to CU. I love our campus! The beautiful landscapes and attractively functional buildings constantly make me delighted to
work here. But the best thing about our campus is that it is home to some of the finest students from Michigan and beyond! My
highest joy is spending time with them. They inspire me with their idealism, vision and passion. I often remind myself that I’m not
here for the paperwork (although I do that to keep the job I love) ... but it’s the students that keep me motivated and satisfied!
So a day like today is bittersweet. I am personally sad to see our graduates leave our community. Yet it is a rewarding thought that
they are going into our world professionally prepared to enable their places of service to flourish and that their embrace of the
values and ethics of the kingdom of Christ will make a compelling difference in their worlds.
One of the advantages of a Christ-centered educational experience is that, unapologetically and without restraint, we have the
privilege of serving our students with the holistic transformational dynamics that only Christ can provide. Any college can make
students smart. At Cornerstone, we embrace the opportunity to do far more. We strive to graduate individuals who are not merely
smart but wise—graduates who are committed to integrity, humility, a strong work ethic, an unconditional love of their neighbor—
and who can winsomely navigate their lives and their cultural contexts to the glory of God and the advance of His kingdom.
I join our graduates in personally thanking you for the support you have provided to them through their journey in our community!
It has been a blessed partnership with you in their intellectual, professional and spiritual development. May their joy of this
milestone be shared with you as well.
Gratefully,
Dr. Joseph M. Stowell, President

M.A. COUNSELING | CLASS OF 2019
“I have grown as a person, Christian and counselor as a result of interacting with people who have
different perspectives than I do. I am very thankful for this aspect of the GRTS community. Not
only have I been challenged in my faith, but I have also grown in my ability to communicate about
and share the gospel with others.”
ASIA BIBLICAL
THEOLOGICAL
SEMINARY
An East Meets West Global Theological Education
Asia Biblical Theological Seminary of Cornerstone University, in cooperation with multiple mission organizations, makes
graduate-level theological education available to eligible Christian leaders serving in Asia. Since 1983, this program has provided
the opportunity to earn master’s degrees from Cornerstone while remaining in Asia. Based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, ABTS offers
seminars in the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore, Papua New Guinea and India.
Asia Biblical Theological Seminary exists to provide theologically conservative graduate education in Asia to pastors, lay leaders,
Christian educators and missionaries, to the end that our students and graduates will be better equipped to serve the Lord in
their vocations and ministry contexts. Our goal is to accomplish this by helping to shape Asian theology and to enhance ministry
competencies by honing already-existing ministry skill sets.
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER: DONALD G. DENYES, D.MIN.
Dr. Don Denyes serves as the senior pastor of South Church in Lansing, Mich. In nearly 45 years of pastoral ministry, his impact
is marked by expository preaching, team building, leadership training and vision casting to influence the community through the
local church for Christ and His kingdom.
Don received a Bachelor of Arts in Bible in 1975 from Bob Jones University where he met his wife, Nancy. During their early
years of life and ministry, they raised five daughters and ministered to congregations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Don
earned a Master of Arts in New Testament Studies from Biblical Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry in Homiletics
from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, studying under the tutelage of the esteemed Dr. Haddon Robinson.
Don was appointed to Cornerstone University’s board of trustees in 1997 and currently serves as vice chair and liaison to Asia
Biblical Theological Seminary.
Don also teaches as an adjunct professor of homiletics at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. As a professor, Don joyfully
accepts the privilege of helping to prepare the next generation of church leaders. He instructs them in expository preaching,
knowing that God will use faithful preaching of the Word to impact lives for generations to come. He also shares his passion for
bringing the Word to life through the art of the first-person narrative.
Don and Nancy’s family has grown to include two sons-in-law and six grandsons, and their family is the delight of their hearts!
“It is thrilling to see God using Cornerstone to prepare the next generation for His kingdom
work around the world, and it is a high and holy privilege to be part of this amazing endeavor.”
MINISTRY LEADERSHIP FORMATION
MINISTRY RESIDENCY (MR) is that aspect of the GRTS degree track that allows students to serve in local ministry settings
and implement skills attained in the academic environment. Ministry Residency participants are involved in diverse contexts
including local, rural, urban, small and large churches. Some residencies have focused on children, adolescents, men’s ministry,
small groups, general pastoral ministry, missions and connections ministry. Reverend Dr. Royce Evans (M.A. ’08) serves as
director of and coordinator for this important equipping dimension of GRTS. He has served in pastoral ministry for more than
20 years.
THE URBAN COHORT PROGRAM at GRTS is an innovative model of theological education designed to provide
transformational learning for ministry leaders serving in the urban context here in Western Michigan. The cohort group is an
assembly of students from Lansing, Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Grand Rapids. The program values the wealth of experience
already possessed by urban ministry participants, fostering transformative learning consistent with sound biblical/theological
understanding, spiritual formation, Christian social ethics and ministerial as well as public leadership. Reverend Dr. Royce Evans
also serves as director of and facilitator for this program.
KERN SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Kern Scholars Program has been a profound opportunity for many young men and women who are called into pastoral
ministry. The program offers a major scholarship funded by the Kern Family Foundation, which provides a way to earn the Master
of Divinity with little or no educational debt. In addition to the scholarship, the program features a cohort structure that provides
for intentional community throughout their time in seminary. Each year, cohorts attend spiritual retreats together and meet
regularly as a small group. Guided by experienced mentors, they explore what it means to lead from a place of authenticity and
brokenness, having their identities rooted firmly in Christ. This year, our fifth and final cohort is graduating, and we could not be
more thankful for their contribution to the GRTS community.
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER: LORI J. COOK
Lori J. Cook—also known as “Maranda”—has served the West Michigan community as an advocate for kids and families for more than 25 years.
Maranda studied at Cambridge University and Hope College, graduating from Hope with a degree in communication and art. She has been active in media for
over 30 years, working in print, radio, TV and digital marketing. In January 2001, she joined Grand Rapids’ WOOD TV8, WOTV 4 and WXSP-TV as the children
and family services manager. Currently, Maranda oversees the development of station projects on-air, online and in our community that target kids and families.
Maranda hosts a daily content block, “Where You Live,” which features a combination of information, inspiration and insights for parents. She is the co-author
of “Fancy Plastic Bags,” a book about parenting daughters in the digital age, and co-author of “Maranda’s Guide to Family Fun in West Michigan.” Maranda also
offers weekly family fun updates on Star 105.7, a Grand Rapids-based radio station, and WOOD TV8’s “Daybreak” show.
Maranda serves on several advisory boards, including the John Ball Zoological Society, Wedgewood Christian Services, Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding,
Basecamp Ministries, the Amway River Bank Run and Cornerstone.
Maranda is the recipient of three Gracie Allen Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Women in Radio and Television West Michigan
Chapter, an Emmy nomination, the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award, a 2011 YWCA Tribute! Award and the 2014 Van Andel Institute Angel of
Excellence Award.
PRESIDENT’S AWARD
The President’s Award is presented annually at commencement to two members of the graduating class. This award is given to one male student and one female
student who have embodied excellence in all areas of life while students at Cornerstone.
The winners of this award are chosen based on their demonstration of the following:
•§
Academic excellence—earned a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.24.
•§
Excellence in leadership—excelled in positions of leadership in a variety of contexts.
•§
Excellence in Christian service—embodied the servant heart of Jesus Christ in their interactions with people inside and outside the Cornerstone community.
•§
Excellence in campus involvement—involved in extracurricular activities and events.
The President’s Award winners exemplify the fulfillment of our mission to develop graduates who will distinguish themselves as influencers in our world for Christ.
Professional & Graduate Studies Division
CONGRATULATIONS, CORNERSTONE
UNIVERSITY GRADUATES!
Your diploma is more than a degree. It is a sign of your determination to reach for your goals, regardless of
life’s obstacles. It is a sign of friendships forged through hard work and shared experiences that supported
and encouraged you. And most of all, it is a sign of your potential to continue making positive changes in
your life and the lives of others around you.
Over 6,000 individuals have graduated from PGS since the division began in 1993. This year,
we’re excited to celebrate with over 200 of you who are walking at graduation to celebrate your
accomplishment in achieving a degree from Cornerstone.
As you graduate today, surrounded by this community of learners, know that you are equipped and
encouraged to take the next steps toward your unique calling, advancing your career and impacting the
world for Christ. As students, you’ve told us that you’ve grown in confidence, learned from the diverse
perspectives of your peers and proven to yourself and to others that you had what it took to achieve this
goal. We’ve already seen several of you successfully take on challenges like requesting a promotion and
designing programs to better support your community.
We’ve seen you do great things as students, and we can’t wait to see you continue to thrive as graduates.
PROFESSIONAL & GRADUATE STUDIES COMMENCEMENT • MAY 11, 2019
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER: LORI J. COOK
Lori J. Cook—also known as “Maranda”—has served the West Michigan community as an advocate for kids and families for more than 25 years.
Maranda studied at Cambridge University and Hope College, graduating from Hope with a degree in communication and art. She has been
active in media for over 30 years, working in print, radio, TV and digital marketing. In January 2001, she joined Grand Rapids’ WOOD TV8,
WOTV 4 and WXSP-TV as the children and family services manager. Currently, Maranda oversees the development of station projects on-air,
online and in our community that target kids and families.
Maranda hosts a daily content block, “Where You Live,” which features a combination of information, inspiration and insights for parents. She
is the co-author of “Fancy Plastic Bags,” a book about parenting daughters in the digital age, and co-author of “Maranda’s Guide to Family
Fun in West Michigan.” Maranda also offers weekly family fun updates on Star 105.7, a Grand Rapids-based radio station, and WOOD TV8’s
“Daybreak” show.
Maranda serves on several advisory boards, including the John Ball Zoological Society, Wedgewood Christian Services, Equest Center for
Therapeutic Riding, Basecamp Ministries, the Amway River Bank Run and Cornerstone.
Maranda is the recipient of three Gracie Allen Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Women in Radio and Television West
Michigan Chapter, an Emmy nomination, the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award, a 2011 YWCA Tribute! Award and the 2014 Van
Andel Institute Angel of Excellence Award.
“I love being a part of the dynamic Cornerstone community. It’s an honor to be a trustee of
an organization that has a mission to help students build a life that matters. I feel that my
involvement not only is helping to guide the future direction of the university, it is making an
eternal investment in future kingdom builders. That’s incredible!”
THE COLLEEN S. SMITH AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
The award is in honor of Colleen S. Smith, former director of academic excellence for Cornerstone University’s Professional & Graduate Studies
(PGS) division. The Award for Excellence in Teaching is intended to recognize adjunct faculty who have established a reputation for excellence
in teaching, research and/or service within the discipline of higher education. The award is granted to individuals who are characterized by
humility and godliness. Recipients are distinguished in equipping the adult learner to influence the world by providing a distinct and academically
excellent education from a Christ-centered worldview.
2019 AWARD RECIPIENTS
Heidi M. Cate, Ph.D.
Dr. Heidi Cate began teaching for Cornerstone’s Professional & Graduate Studies (PGS) division in 2012. As a PGS instructor, she has taught
many courses in psychology, education and business drawing upon her extensive educational and professional background. Heidi’s expertise as a
mental health counselor and as an education leader have been of tremendous benefit for PGS students and in shaping curriculum. Her approach
to teaching is marked by a dedication to student learning, her depth of knowledge and her passion for education.
Tonya R. Fountain, D.M.
Dr. Tonya Fountain began teaching for Cornerstone’s Professional & Graduate Studies (PGS) division in 2008. She has also served as special
appointment faculty member since 2015 for PGS in its undergraduate and graduate business programs and has recently helped to develop
courses for the university’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program in Organizational Leadership and Development.
With a Doctor of Management (D.M.) in Organizational Management, Leadership Theory and Design from the University of Phoenix, Tonya
brings to the classroom extensive expertise in human resources, leadership development and organizational theory with noteworthy expertise in
applying research and theory to practice. Her ability to synthesize information, make practical applications and inspire others lay the foundation
for her sublime teaching, as does her ability to facilitate discussions on difficult and contentious human resource issues. Tonya is an exceptional
on-ground and online instructor who influences students to achieve beyond what they often think is possible. Her students say that she is
“Always positive! Always helpful! Always encouraging,” while “making us want to come to class, learn and do an outstanding job because we
want to show her how well she has taught us.”
UNIVERSITY
MACE
The use of a mace as a metaphor for authority, learning, scholarship and
eternal values is one of the grandest traditions of higher education. The
university mace connects today’s students, faculty and staff members with
the community of scholars who have preceded them and those who will come
hereafter. The mace is usually carried at the head of processions by a special
honoree.
Universities throughout the world take great pride in their own particular
mace, each designed with rich symbolism and history relating to the specific
institution. Cornerstone is prominently featured on the mace with the
university seal. The roots of the university are symbolized by a Petoskey stone
(native to Michigan). The story of the biblical narrative—and the university’s
mission—is depicted in symbols expressing the four elements of a Christian
worldview (i.e., creation, fall, redemption and consummation).
