Serves 4 

INGREDIENTS 

CHIVE BUTTER SAUCE 

100ml white wine 

100ml white wine vinegar 

50ml cream 

200g butter – cubed 

1 tablespoon chopped chives 

POTATO GNOCCHI 

2 maris piper potatoes 

1 egg 

200g approx. plain flour 

1 tablespoon olive oil 

SALMON 

4 x 180g fillets salmon 

– skinned and boned 

2 bunches English asparagus 

– blanched 

200g Bury black pudding – cubed 

METHOD 

1. For the gnocchi – take the potatoes, skin on, and simmer in 

water until cooked. Remove and whilst still warm peel and 

then pass through a potato ricer. 

2. Place in a bowl, mix in the egg, salt and pepper. Flour a work 

surface and place the mixture in the centre, gradually keep on 

mixing in flour until you get a smooth, dough. Don’t overwork 

otherwise it does go heavy. 

3. Roll the potato dough into cylinders and cut into pieces about 

2cm wide, roll each piece over a fork to leave an indentation. 

4. Have a pan with simmering salted water ready, add the gnocchi 

and simmer until they rise to the surface, remove with a slotted 

spoon, cool, then drizzle with olive oil to prevent sticking. 

5. For the chive butter sauce – place the white wine and white 

wine vinegar in a pan and reduce by half, add the cream and 

reduce again, finally whisking in the butter to emulsify. 

Add the chives and season to taste. 

6. When ready to serve, heat a non-stick pan, add the olive oil and 

seal the salmon on both sides. Add the black pudding 

and slightly toast, warm the asparagus too. 

7. For the gnocchi – heat the olive oil and butter in a pan, add the 

blanched dumplings and fry briefly until slightly coloured. 

8. Arrange the gnocchi on serving plates, scatter with the black 

pudding and asparagus. Spoon over the chive butter sauce 

and finally top with the salmon.

It’s Been a Hard 

Day’s Night!

You would be forgiven if you had 

thought this story was about to lead 

into another discussion on Brexit. 

Fortunately you would be wrong. 

A recent news item has reported the 

discovery of, in Mexico, a reel of film 

footage depicting the first ever live showing 

of the Beatles on ‘Top of the Pops’. Which 

got me thinking about Rochdale’s connection with the ‘Fab Four’ 

and various other artists. 

‘Town Meadows‘, now home of the Police Station, was once the 

site of the Circus and Hippodrome Theatre, the venue for popular 

music hall and circus acts of the nineteenth century. Years after the 

demise of the Theatre, Beatles’ song writer, John Lennon, spotted 

a poster in a second hand shop, from 1843. The Pablo Fanque 

Circus Royal poster was the basis of the song ‘For the Benefit of Mr 

Kite’ which is featured on 

the Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ 

album. It is rumoured that 

the original poster is in the possession of Yoko 

Ono and is possibly the only one still left in 

existence. So check your lofts- if you find one it 

might be worth a few quid. 

Walking towards the Old Post Office, past the 

Cenotaph, if you glance to your left across the 

well manicured (whispering) grass lawns, you’ll 

see the ‘Town Flats’ where Don Estelle off ‘It Ain’t 

Half Hot Mum’ and Bill Oddie’s (The Goodies) 

Mum both once lived. 

A bit further on, after the Town Hall on your right, 

you will see ‘Our Gracie’ who was recently 

described as the ‘Madonna’ of her time.

Coming out of the pub and turning left past the Riverside building 

and the new shopping development, look down past Mecca Bingo 

towards its car park where you will find the site of the Cubi-Klub, all 

now disappeared into the mists of time, this Rochdale version of the 

Liverpool Cavern once boasted the famous Rolling Stones, however, 

only two members managed the trip to Rochdale and the gig was 

infamously cancelled. 

A quick skip and a hop onto Water Street 

then turn left up Baron Street, then 

halfway along you’ll come to Kenion Street 

on your right, with a blue plaque showing 

the building used to record famous 

Manchester bands of the eighties such 

as ‘Joy Division’ and ‘The Fall’. 

About turn and you’ll see another plaque 

telling you where Grace Stansfield, ‘Our 

Gracie ‘once lived. Which brings me onto 

probably our most famous modern day 

recording artist - Lisa Stansfield. But you’ll 

have to get the bus up Edenfield Road to 

view her former house. 

I hope you have enjoyed our ‘musical 

mystery tour ‘ around Rochdale and if 

you’re hungry for more present day events 

look no further than a short walk into the 

Town Hall Square where you will find the 

yearly venue for the August Feel Good 

Festival, sporting many different groups 

that cater for a kaleidoscope of musical 

tastes. ‘We hope you do enjoy the show!’

A FEW LOST ROCHDALE SHOPS 

Those who can remember the variety in 

the streets of towns in the North West 

will look back fondly to a time when 

Rochdale’s Yorkshire Street and Drake 

Street offered something distinctive and 

different to the streets of Bury or Oldham. 

I could have picked Diggle and Taylor 

or Stock Liquidators, Lovick’s or Jimmy 

Duck’s, but I’ve gone with shops 

I remember with some affection. 

Iveson’s 

Standing in Drake Street, this store was 

architecturally unmissable with the tower of 

the Trafalgar Buildings at the corner of Nelson 

Street. Founded in 1810 Iveson’s vied with the 

Co-op across the road in attracting footfall into 

town for its domestic ware, its furniture and 

carpets. Iveson’s was thought to be the classier 

store of the two, possibly because it was a 

family concern, and was prominent in the 

promotion of its goods through the Observer. 

At its height the store employed 62 people 

from warehouse staff to shop assistants and 

office staff. Its range of goods was impressive, 

at one time shoppers being able to view an 

entire furnished bungalow in the store with 

over 4000 prospective shoppers coming in to 

see it. Not only did Iveson’s sell household 

fixtures but it carpeted many of the cinemas 

in town, equipped company boardrooms and 

furnished the Norden Riviera dance hall and 

picnic areas in 1936. 

The last of the Iveson family Anne (then 

Slater) and John oversaw the closure of the 

store in 1984, Anne having worked first as a 

cashier and eventual owner. She was with the 

company for over 49 years. The building was 

demolished in 2013. 

Senior’s 

On the corner of Yorkshire Street and Baillie 

Street, Senior’s provided family clothes for 

generations. In 1919, the founder Sydney 

Senior had previously rented rooms above 

Wild’s gent’s outfitters but started to sell made 

to measure men’s suits for those demobbed 

from the army. He made a success out of 

small beginnings and by 1921 was able to buy 

out Wild’s and open the shop under his own 

name. Maintaining its sewing rooms, it soon 

became known for its bespoke tailoring and its 

eye for the latest fashions. So successful was 

Senior’s that the premises were extended to 

form a large store from three smaller ones.

Joining the business in 1958, Anthony Senior 

carried on the family tradition of producing 

quality clothes. By 1960 the company expanded 

and to meet the fashions of the day set up a 

ready-to-wear department on site. However, 

by 1999 the menswear department which had 

been at the heart of Seniors closed down and, 

on Anthony Senior’s retirement in 2001, so too 

the ladieswear section. 

Redman’s 

Situated on Yorkshire Street, Redman’s 

was one of the main grocery competitors to 

James Duckworth’s although its provisions 

were distinctive and different. A large store, 

Redman’s seemed to be specialists in cooked 

meats and that smell was the first thing that 

hit you as you entered the shop. It was a smell 

which was carried through the store and into 

a large café that was a meeting place for many 

shoppers in Rochdale. 

But Redman’s had certain products for sale 

that other shops didn’t have. I remember there 

being wire baskets containing what were 

promoted as ‘continental foods’ where you 

could find such strange delicacies as 

chocolate ants (goodness knows what they 

were !) and frogs legs which came in small 

sardine-type tins and which tasted of chicken. 

Haworth’s 

One of the most prominent spots for a shop 

in Rochdale was on the South Parade just 

around the corner at the bottom of Drake 

Street. Owned by three generations of the 

same family, Haworth’s operated from this 

site for many years with the first Haworth, 

Edwin, opening ‘The Toggery’ in 1896 to sell 

menswear. Edwin was joined by his son 

Alfred in the company, expanding the shop 

over the years by taking over adjoining 

premises and setting up new and different 

departments – even launching a popular 

ladies hairdresser’s. The store sold both 

men’s and women’s clothes and at their 

height was the place to go if you wanted 

quality clothes in town. Geffrey Haworth 

continued the business after the war but 

Manchester shopping in the 1960’s and 

the rise of a new youth culture with which 

Haworth’s never really kept up, led to the 

shop’s decline. Haworth’s was eventually 

sold in 1984, falling between two stools in 

terms of its size - it was neither big enough 

as a department store nor small enough to 

maintain trade as a local specialist retailer. 

With the prospect of an ever-bigger shopping 

centre at the heart of Rochdale and the rise of 

on-line shopping, it could be said that the days 

of the independent family store are over. That 

might be the case, only the names remaining 

of a town with ‘local shops for local people,’ a 

phrase that has sadly become only a sit-com 

joke. However, let’s hope for distinctiveness, 

style and shops that reach out to Rochdale 

with our future new shopping centre.

NORDEN 

Greenbooth 

& DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY 

THE FIRST GENERATION 

How many times have you taken a 

walk around Greenbooth Reservoir just 

taking in the peace and tranquillity of 

the beautiful surroundings? Some may 

even contemplate the history of what 

had laid there before, or for the few 

that still remember what life was like 

there, they may even hear the echoes 

of village life still resonating in their 

minds eye. 

My interest in Greenbooth was piqued 

when I took a walk around the reservoir 

and tried to imagine just what it had been 

like as a living and thriving community. 

Most of what I’d read, starts in 1848 with 

James Butterworth as owner of Messrs 

James Butterworth & Sons, Woollen 

Manufacturer, Greenbooth and his 

development of the surrounding village 

to accommodate his workers. As I 

continued my research I learnt that this 

was not exactly the start of the story. 

The origins of the ‘Butterworth’s Woollen 

Manufacturing empire dated back to his 

father, William Butterworth and Sons who 

began manufacturing in the early 1800s 

in premises known as ‘The Oil Mill’ in 

Rochdale. They also had warehouses and 

handlooms at Lowfield, Milnrow, later 

moving on to premises on Oldham Road 

whilst also running a finishing mill at 

Greenbooth. Unfortunately, the Oldham 

Road mill was destroyed by fire and 

rebuilt at considerable expense. After a 

second fire, the family were forced to 

rethink their location and it was decided

to move the whole operation to 

Greenbooth and expand those premises. 

Very soon, the sheer expense of rebuilds 

on the Oldham Road site and the 

extensive construction in Greenbooth 

lead to their downfall and resulted in 

bankruptcy. 

James, unlike his brothers, had not joined 

his father in the family business. James 

was already a successful Wool Stapler and 

was a wealthy man in his own right. He 

had however, financially supported his 

family by providing the second mortgage 

on the premises when they fell into 

difficulties. No doubt as a Wool Stapler 

James may well have provided much of 

the raw material involved in their 

manufacturing process. By 1848 James 

owned a substantial amount of land in 

the Naden Valley, including East Knowl 

Colliery, Naden Farm and other farms and 

land in the areas surrounding Greenbooth 

itself. He also owned Lower Tenterhouse, 

Tenterhouse and Upper Tenterhouse. 

Following their bankruptcy, the mill 

and the few surrounding buildings had 

initially gone up for sale in 1847. James 

already holding financial interest in the 

property, by this point, decided to take 

over full ownership of the business. 

Already at the age of 62 and having 

been widowed for many years, this was 

a massive commitment but he was loyal 

and wanted to continue what his father 

had started. He was known to be a great 

orator with a kind and philanthropic view 

of life and the village he wanted to create. 

He provided housing and a shop for his 

workers, there was also a small Co-op 

shop. Rent was deducted from wages, 

as was payments for milk which was 

delivered daily from Naden Farm. Meat, 

cheese and eggs were all readily available 

from local farms. James did his best to 

ensure viability of the village by paying 

the workers half their wages in tokens 

that had to be spent in the village. This 

provided the opportunity for the village 

to be as self-sufficient as possible. There 

was no pub or church in the village and 

villagers made the regular walk to Norden 

to worship and to obtain any provisions 

not readily available. 

Each Monday morning, a large copper 

tub of hot water was provided in the 

mill yard for the ladies of the village to

ing along buckets to ease the burden of 

heating water at home for washing. He 

also permitted them the use of the mill 

drying rooms to dry blankets or other 

heavy items. Coal was in ready supply for 

both mill and village use and came down 

on the Ariel cable track from East Knowl 

Colliery. 

James also cared about the social aspects 

of their lives, supported local events and 

provided a reading room and a daily 

newspaper. A year before his death, in 

1867, he fulfilled his long held wish of 

providing a school for the education of 

the children of his workforce. 

Greenbooth School was said to be built in 

a ‘neat gothic style’ and to accommodate 

500 persons. It was opened on 27th May 

1867. On the first week there was in 

attendance 119 boys, girls and short 

timers, this figure increasing to 124 by the 

fourth week. The school was to remain 

open and in constant use both as an 

educational establishment, community 

venue and meeting hall for many 

community and church events until 1931. 

Following James’ death in 1868 his 

daughter Mary Hutchinson, who became 

notorious for inflicting her rigorous 

standards of cleanliness on the village and 

its people, took over the sole running of 

the Mill, the School and the village itself. 

Mary, was an extremely competent 

woman and James’ faith in his daughter’s 

business ability is borne out by the legacy 

in his Will, leaving Mary in sole charge 

of his business empire. Mary’s husband, 

Robert Hutchinson, was the wealthy mill 

owner of Nova Scotia Mill in Blackburn 

and each ran their businesses 

independently. 

I finally managed to trace the original 

school records, and had the privilege of 

handling these important documents. 

These books have revealed so very much 

more of the day to day life of Greenbooth 

than could have been read in any 

history book. I hope at some point in the 

future to produce a written document on 

my findings which will hopefully give a 

greater insight into life in the village of 

Greenbooth and perhaps give a voice to 

its inhabitants. I will follow up with 

some of the content in a future issue 

of the magazine. 

In the meantime, there is a public display 

of photos and researched material in the 

Old Library, produced by fellow historian, 

Chris Verey. Chris produced this material 

to accompany my Greenbooth talk to 

Norden & District Local History Society 

back in November. Feel free to pop in, 

have a coffee or merely browse the display 

boards and learn a little more about 

such an important part of our history.

Whitworth 

in Bloom 

This year, for the first time, Whitworth is entering 

the North West in Bloom competition. It aims to 

encourage communities to improve their local 

environment through imaginative planting of trees, 

shrubs, flowers and landscaping, conservation and 

recycling projects and to eliminate eyesores that 

blight our streets such as litter, graffiti and 

vandalism. By taking part in the competition we 

are hoping to increase the feeling of civic pride and 

start the ball rolling on a long-term plan to improve 

the local environment. 

To launch ‘Whitworth in Bloom’, we are going to 

have a local competition where residents can enter 

their own gardens and green spaces. There will be 

extra points for displays that are visible from the 

road, innovation (for example where there is no 

green space but you manage to create some with 

window boxes and hanging baskets), sustainability 

(thinking about plants that need less watering and 

maintenance), environmentally conscious (recycled 

materials and planting wildlife friendly plants and 

pollinators) and being wise with water (where you 

have managed to incorporate some kind of 

rainwater harvesting into your design). 

There are several spots in Whitworth that are 

looking a bit neglected, maybe we can help you bring 

it back to life like Linda has done at Union Street? 

The Allotment Working Group volunteers each 

maintain a planter located by the side of the road, 

they really help to bring a bit of colour to the town. 

This competition should get us ready for the official 

North West in Bloom judges to come and judge 

the town at some point in July. In preparation for 

the competition we are doing some clean-up work 

wherever possible. We have been spring cleaning 

litterbins and road signs. 

We really want to thank the members of our 

community who have already been making 

Whitworth look its blooming best for years. 

The horticultural society look after the memorial 

gardens and the bowling green in addition to the 

planters at the Riverside. Linda, has been working 

hard maintaining this planter on Union Street for 

years and keeping it looking marvellous since 

Rossendale Borough Council stopped tending to it. 

Glen, our Caretaker, picks up the town’s litter and 

we know from when he takes his annual leave what 

the town would look like without his input. Keep 

Whitworth Tidy have regular litter picks and make 

such a difference to our community, why not go 

along, they are a friendly bunch and it is amazing 

what you can achieve in just an hour!
