Strings / Chamber Music New series: Terezín Composers About the new series: Photo: Pavel Haas © Music History Department of the Moravian Museum in Brno Before being deported and murdered, Czech composers Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, and Hans Krása were detained at the Terezín (Theresienstadt) Ghetto. Even there they continued to compose music. Although they suffered the same tragic fate, their respective creative output was quite unique with diverse and colorful compositions. Our new series “Terezín Composers” aims to highlight these characteristics and comprises selected chamber music works in new Urtext editions. Pavel Haas: String Quartet No. 2 op. 7 “Z Ópičích hor” / “From the Monkey Mountains” With percussion ad libitum BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Ondřej Pivoda Pavel Haas was one of Leoš Janáček’s most gifted students. His String Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains” is considered to be one of the first high points of his œuvre. In this work, Haas combined elements of Janáček’s compositional technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement’s instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for string quartet only. For this edition Ondřej Pivoda has reconstructed the original version, bringing to light passages that were never published until now.
