Jody Watley

Recently honored as “Crossover Music

Icon” by Black Music Honors and ranked

by Billboard as one of the Greatest Dance

Artists of All Time, Jody Watley reigns

supreme at the 30 th anniversary of her

Grammy award-winning debut album. Her

versatility in music genres and mastering

other entertainment media make Jody

incomparable and her iconography one-ofa-kind.

Modesty aside, how would you describe

yourself?

‘what’s that about shy girl?!’. People are

always surprised at how nice I am..they

expect ice queen...though I can go there

when necessary.

How does it feel to celebrate the 30th

anniversary of your Grammy Award winning

debut album?

I don’t think of time. And honestly it

doesn’t seem that long ago - it’s awesome

and I’m still a thrill! I’m very sad about

George Michael. As you know we did a

duet together on my debut. We met in

the UK when I did Band Aid ‘Do They

Know It’s Christmas’ with him and other

British pop stars.

How is nightlife in Los Angeles different

than other major cities?

Down to earth, mellow with a splash

of intensity and fabulous and a great

Los Angeles seems more superficial than

sense of humor and wit - I laugh a lot

other cities. Thankfully my friend Bryan

and quips come from me that I’m like -

Rabin created Giorgio’s on the

SUMMER TRIPS

ESCAPE TO SEATTLE TO SEE THE NEW

WATERFRONT VIEWS

by Bill Malcolm

Orca transit pass so you can get around

easily on Sound Transit light rail, King

County Metro Bus, the Washington State

Ferries, and the 2 streetcars.

Where to stay? The Baroness Hotel (1005

Spring Street) gives you a small studio in

their historic building (around $159) while

the Inn at Virginia Mason across the street

is also very nice ($129 or so). I got a great

rate at The Baroness at Booking.com.

Have you been to Seattle lately? It’s a boom

town thanks to Amazon and the other high

tech employers. The city is very LGBTQ

friendly. Indeed the new mayor, Jenny

Durkan, is a lesbian. The city has reclaimed

its waterfront by knocking down the Alaska

Way Viaduct and putting the traffic in a

tunnel instead. Marijuana usage is legal and

the whole state is now a sanctuary state.

Governor Inslee is running for President.

It makes a great summer get away where

the temps are pleasant and there is alot to

do. The city is actually is in a rain shadow

and the weather is reliably good until

September.

You can enjoy the nearby First Hill

neighborhood and it is a short walk to

Capitol Hill (the gay neighborhood),

downtown, and the attractions. Other

bargain hotels are The Moore (from $100

with shared bathrooms). The Springhill

Suites on Yale is very nice and across the

street from the 24 Hour Fitness and a block

or two to the fabulous REI Co-op Flagship

Store which features hiking trails in a rain

forest and a waterfall.

Seattle hotels can be expensive in the

summer due to the cruise line business.

Also many now tack on resort or amentiy

fees so be sure and ask if they do.

Getting There

I took Alaska Airlines, America’s best

airline although Delta now has a hub there

to. They both offer lots of nonstops.

Be sure and load the GoGo inflight

entertainment app before you board the

Alaska flight.

When you land, take the Sound Transit

light 22 rail IF to YOU your LIKE hotel US, (just PLEASE $3). LIKE Buy US an ON FACEBOOK: DESERTDAILYGUIDE

If you want to stay out by the airport, I like

the Marina Inn in Des Moines (take the

#`156 line from SeaTac). The rates are great

and they are near the marina and Puget

Sound. The Days Inn by the airport is nice

and you can walk their from the airport.

What to do? Take the Bainbridge Island

Ferry ($9 round trip) and enjoy Northwest

regional treats in the cafeteria. Great shots

of downtown Seattle, Mt. Rainier, Mt.

Baker, and the Olympic Mountains from

the less than two hour round trip.

Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill is a must.

Great views of the Olympic Mountains

and downtown plus a botanical garden

and rhodies (Seattle speak for the showy

rhodedendrons).

Walk around the gayborhood, Capitol Hill,

with its great shops and restaurants (and

new light rail station).

are offered around town.

Grab a baked treat at Sugar Bakery and Cafe

(on Madison Avenue near Terry).

Nightlife Urban hipsters and bears can

be found at Pony (1221 E.Madison). The

world’s smallest T Dance is on Sundays with

dancers and cheap drinks. They have a great

patio.

DJ Vinny spins the Disco hits and remakes

Sundays at The Cuff (1533 13th). Dance

the night away to the Donna Summer and

Madonna classics. They also have a great

outdoor barbecue. R Place at 619 E Pine is

also fun.

All the bars are in the Capitol Hill

neighborhood just east of downtown (Pike,

Pine, and Broadway).

Tips! If you have a car, Mt. Rainier National

Park is worth a visit. The 14,000 foot

volcano is southeast of Seattle. Portland

and Vancouver are just a short hop away

and both are served by Amtrak. You can

also take a ferry to Victoria, B.C. Bring your

passport. You won’t run out of things to do

in the great Pacific Northwest which has a

distinctly different regional feel than most

of North America. For more information

More Seattle ideas at Seattle Gay News,

www.sgn.org.

Take a hike out of town. If you don’t have a

car, King County Metro will give you a lift

to the nearby Cascade Mountains on the

weekend.

Pike Place Market is another must. With

the removal of the Alaska Way Viaduct, the

waterfront views are even more amazing.

Take a run or walk with the Frontrunners.

They meet Saturday at 9 a.m. at Green Lake.

Swimmers can join the Orca swim club.

They do outdoor swims in the summer on Bill Malcolm is a syndicated LGBTQ value

Sunset Strip in The Standard where you

can go for a twirl - really hit the dance

floor to great music and not worry about

people taking pictures all night.

Where do you like to go, or do when you

have a night off?

I’m a longtime homebody. Introvert, and

now that I’m an empty nester with one

college grad living in the bay (my daughter)

...and my youngest (my son) in NYC

soon to be a grad. I still have habits of

cooking a good dinner, lighting candles.

Peaceful. good music, not a lot of TV but

sometimes Project Runway. Sometimes

‘Snapped - always glad I pulled myself

together and never did anything diabolical

after watching ‘Snapped!’ I have

a few friends where we have breakfast

get togethers, I like that, low key stuff...

Pancakes, egg whites and ‘tea’ :)

What’s new on your play list?

I’m still enjoying ‘A Moon

Shaped Pool’ the most

recent Radiohead album.

Their music is calming. I’m

obsessed with Nora En Pure

on the dance tip, Bonobo.. I

like dance and electronica..

jazz..and course everything

else. Oh - and Robert Glasper

is awesome fusing jazz and

hip hop. Love that also Kaytranada..Pablo

Nouvelle has

a brilliant song called I Will

ft, Sam Wills, that I love...and

anything Rihanna.

Tell me about your LGBTQ+ fans?

They are the best and most loyal. And

will cut a troll like a sharp sushi chef up

on my social media pages!

What’s your favorite charity or cause?

Anything for children, LGBTQ, civil

and human rights. Of course I’m proud

as well to have been on the forefront of

HIV/AIDS Awareness with projects like

Red, Hot & Blue..I did the first AMFAR

for Elizabeth Taylor when it was a small

event at the Four Seasons in Beverly

Hills, DIVA’s with Sheryl Lee Ralph, and

tons more. Before it was really mainstream.

What living person do you most admire?

My mother - she’s gone through so much

- overcome heroin and crack addition.

From dolman sleeves to prison blues to

working with those who have been in

her shoes. she’s now in her 80’s and I just

marvel at her and proud she overcame

her demons. People don’t know that side

of my life. I’ve been protective of her but

now she sees how it can be an inspiration

to others.

What exciting project or event do you

have coming up?

Working on the debut album with my

new group SRL. It’s titles “Bridges’ -- I

also have a new folk duet of all things

with Peter Harper called ‘A Million

Miles’ - current single ‘Sanctuary’.. all

sorts of stuff and working on my memoirs.

Though RuPaul advised me to pitch

it as a movie (biopic).

AdamsArtExpose’ ART

THE ART OF POLITICAL BRANDING

ELECTION 2020 - PART II

The Center for Politics and Design,

an organization started prior to the

2018 election. This is a five person

group which established a digital

archive of the political logos of

2018 candidates. This archive blog

asked visitors to rate logo designs

by color use, type style, gender of

candidate, state of origination and

how the overall design reflected the

candidates personality. The results of

their survey will be available for the

designers political slogans during this

can future elections

The CAPD found some characteristics

common among candidates, for

example, Democratic candidates

running in a red district more

commonly used red as the primary

color scheme in their advertising,

whereas Republicans in the opposite

situation used blue. It was found that

women candidates preferred to use

their first names more often than

men and their names were shown in

thinner letter font styles than men.

The color pink has been used in the

branding fonts of Kirsten Gillibrand.

This is a color that has not been

seen in any presidential election

previously. The use of pink hats

in the ME TO campaign may have

introduced the feminine related color

to be more prominent as women are

more involved in running for office.

Elizabeth Warren also has a bumper

sticker color choice with pink being

one of the colors.

Bernie Sanders has a sticker for his

Not Me, Us slogan with a choice of

blue or white background where the

logo as a cut out of Bernie raising his

hand the cut out is filled with multi

colored images of varied races of

people. This is one of the most multi

colored artistic designs at this time

in the 2020 campaign. The numbers

of candidates in the running for

president on the Democratic side

requires that each candidate develop

a personal logo with design and

colors that represent them in a way

that the electorate can relate to with

a ready identity. The red MAGA hats

may go down in history infamously

representing the contemptible tyrant

of Trump. It is however effective as

a representation just as the swastika

represents Nazis.

A New reality has been announced at the

Pokémon 2019 Press Conference.

Including innovative mobile experiences,

Detective Pokémon releases on Nintendo

Switch.

But there is more under the hood of the

world's greatest game engine.

Pokémon Sleep

Pokémon Sleep brings a gameplay

experience unlike any other. A new device

based on the Pokémon GO Plus device, it

could track the amount of time a player

spent sleeping and when they wake up. This

result is accomplished by an embedded

accelerometer that then sends the data to

your smartphone via Bluetooth.

INSIDER TIP: Some in the know are saying

Santa needed Pokémon Sleep updates as he

rolls out the new digital North Pole. As a

side note we heard Elon Musk will have the

polar underground lite rail finished by mid

December.

Pokémon Masters is on the way for iOS

and Android devices from The Pokémon

Company and DeNA. Pokémon Masters

lets players experience a new type of

Pokémon battling on the go, and it features

many famous Pokémon Trainers from the

long history of Pokémon video games.

Gameplay has been optimized for smart

devices, allowing anyone to casually pick it

up and play.

Detective Pikachu Game

Because the POKÉMON Detective Pikachu

movie has hit, fans will get more, more of

the famous Pokémon sleuth. Creatures,

Inc., has plans for a new entry in the

Detective Pikachu video game series for

Nintendo Switch.

THE LAST WORD

Good fences make good neighbors

But not in the gig economy! People

today are renting their rooms

and operating ride shares at the

enterprise level with several cars.

Not talking about scooters and Uber

but with actual fleets of cars. Or

Airbnb with lots of guests in and out.

That is a right, But sadly they are

not business people, and operate like

they have a right to inconvenience

their neighbors. That would be the

last thing a reasonable business

person would do, to impose in any

way on your neighbor.

I am not saying they should not

have the right to do what is legal,

but they have to respect the culture

and desires of other home owners or

renters. This is their home and you

don't park extra cars on the street as

if they own the place.

If you see a TCP number on a car,

you can look up the company name

and find out more information and

express your concerns.

neighbor and your complaint should

not be met with hostility. When that

does happen, it's because they feel

they can bully you and intimidate

you.

The Centers for Disease Control

and Department of Education

released the first federal uniform

definition of bullying for research

and surveillance. The core elements

of the definition include: unwanted

aggressive behavior; observed or

perceived power imbalance; and

repetition of behaviors or high

likelihood of repetition. There are

many different modes and types of

bullying.

TCP numbers are issued by

the California Public Utilities

Commission to ground

transportation companies that meet

the criteria for up to date insurance

requirements, current registration

and driver safety.

Housing and code complaints should

be directed to the city. I find calling

the city first is a better choice, as
