Parish Council Chat

Time moves on and we enter the month of June, yes we are halfway

through the year. Interestingly the ancient Romans regarded June as an

inauspicious time to get married! Don’t let on to all those June Brides to

be.

The Parish Council held its Annual Meeting last month and Pat Fynn was

elected as Chairman. We need to co-opt two additional councillors, so if

you would like to be a parish councillor – especially for Pickwell – contact

any existing Councillor or the Parish Clerk. See the notice on the Parish

website or notice boards for further details.

There are a number of residents who have recently moved into Somerby

parish and we welcome you all to our community. We have many

activities in the parish and our magazine “Towards” is designed to keep

you abreast of upcoming events and activities such as singing with the

Somerby singers, art with the Art group or photography at the Camera

Club, several opportunities to practice Yoga, sit in at Knit and Natter in

Pickwell or just relax with a coffee when Kathy’s Pop-up Coffee Shop is in

the village. You can find out about the one off events here also, there are

other ways to obtain information if you visit our website at

http://somerby.leicestershireparishcouncils.org. Or like us on Facebook.

Better still, come and join us at our monthly meeting on the 2 nd

Wednesday of month (except August and December).

All of which brings me neatly back to Somerby Parish Neighbourhood

Plan. Three years ago we held the first consultation event. This June you

can expect to see the fruits of the extremely hard work the

Neighbourhood Planning Group has done during the intervening years in

order to produce the draft document for your examination prior to

referendum.

We thank Mary Anne Donovan, Carl Powell along with the Somerby Parish

Neighbourhood Plan advisory group for their sterling work in getting the

plan to the last couple of hurdles.

WHO ARE ‘THEY’?

Are they just someone to blame if something is not right?

Or are they….

The ones who get the street lights fixed?

The ones who get the verges mown?

The ones who make sure the cemetery is appropriately

maintained?

The ones who get the Horse Pond flourishing again?

The ones who campaign to keep the 113 bus running?

The ones who get the Parish news to you each month?

The ones who call on neighbours to see who is affected by

Planning Applications?

The ones who represent you when there is a problem with

local authorities?

You too could become a ‘THEY’

Do consider being co-opted as a Parish Councillor

Call the Parish Clerk on 454529 or email

SOMERBY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hello again,

At the time of writing this, our wonderful Year 6 pupils are undergoing their

national SAT’s tests. We cannot fault them for their unerring stamina; superb

attitude to year 6 and turning up week on week for an early start to try out

some past questions over breakfast. We are all very proud of them.

Life continues at a pace in the

academic journey of our small

school. Our theme for this last term

of the year is “Wonderful World”.

We kick-started our learning on this

with a celebration of International

Day. Everyone dressed in outfits

connected with other countries and

we took part in enrichment

activities to aid our learning which

included: making Jamaican cakes, experimenting with Australian aboriginal

art and creating Indian mandalas. It was a super day and lots of fun was had

alongside the learning opportunities. Willow Class continue their theme

which is based around the book of The Snail on the Whale Tail, Ash Class are

looking at the book Dear Greenpeace and becoming environmentally aware,

whilst Oak Class are going back in history to see the impact the Ancient

Greeks have had on our wonderful world.

As we continue to think about the wonderful world, Mrs. Hickton has

Somerby School on the job of entering the Melton in Bloom competition

once more. Our school has to enter a wheelbarrow of veg this year. More

news on this to follow next month once judging has taken place.

We have been really pleased to welcome

back to school Mrs. Allen this term after

taking some time off following a long

term illness. Not only has she brought

back her smile and happiness but also

our favourite reading dog: Ripple. Our

Friday mornings are a real delight to

continue to read with Ripple and we

have missed him.

6

Something new for us this term has been

joining the Leicestershire Music Hub. This

has meant that Oak class are currently

undergoing a 10-week stint of learning to

play the guitar altogether as a class.

Thanks to Mr Rifugiato we certainly have

some budding rock stars of the future!

We continue to take part in more sporting

competitions and have entered all our

work this year to be assessed for the

School Games Mark. Fingers crossed that

we can raise our level from Bronze this

year! Our final House v House

competition was Cricket with some very

close matches. The red team were the

eventual winners by just one run.

We still have a very busy diary with much

to achieve during the Summer term including Sports Day, our School

Production, a dog walk and our induction days for the new intake. So, its

heads down until we finish in July!

Have Your Say – Planning Applications

Several parishioners have requested that we include planning

applications in Towards. This is basically a good idea but there are

problems. When an application comes from Melton Borough Council,

the Parish Council has less than 21 days to respond to it. Obviously if

this falls between the monthly intervals for the magazine then it would

be too late for parishioners to make their comments. However you

can still do this by checking the Parish web site and via MBC’s

site…voice your opinions – for or against. If you have particular

concerns please contact a councillor or the Parish Clerk.

The Little Shop of Loveliness…

suggests some ways of using herbs that you may not have considered.

• Carrot and Coriander Dip – cook 225g

carrots until tender. Puree them with 2

crushed cloves of garlic, 200ml yogurt and

½ tsp ground coriander. Season and chill

before serving with crudites.

• Mangetout Salad – blanch 175g mangetout,

drain and dry. Mix with 2 finely sliced

courgettes, 2 shallots and 3tbsp chopped basil.

Dress with 4tbsp olive oil, 1tbsp orange juice,

1tbsp wine vinegar, 1tsp honey, a crushed clove

of garlic and seasoning. Chill then garnish with

orange slices.

• Lemon Balm Ice Cream – bring ½ pt

milk and 10 crushed lemon balm

leaves to the boil then leave to infuse

for 40 mins. Whisk 3 egg yolks with

125g icing sugar until pale and frothy.

Strain in the milk and stir over a low

heat until the mixture thickens to coat

the back of a spoon. Cool, cover,

freeze until beginning to set. Whip ½

double cream until stiff then fold in and freeze for 2hrs. Beat again then

freeze. Best if in the fridge for 30mins before serving.

• Rosemary Hair Rinse – boil 60g rosemary in 1L

water. Strain and add 5tbsp white wine vinegar

and 1tbsp lemonjuice. Store in an airtight jar.

(Said to improve the scalp and prevent dandruff)

Enjoy!
