Hello GWSA members:
We are happy to report that the United Way has reinstated funding
for GWSA to run CSS programs for another year. Pending a review
of GWSA’s governance and successful program delivery outcomes
in March 2020, we will receive the third year of funding from our
previous award.
Over 140 members attended the special Membership meeting held
Monday, May 13, in the Evergreen Centre Auditorium. Attendees
came to cast their votes for new Directors and a collection of member
-initiated motions. Thank you to everyone who helped with meeting
setup and logistics.
The meeting opened with a statement from the Directors who remained
after the April 24 resignations. They spoke of their commitment
to more openness and transparency in routine governance matters
along with their desire to involve GWSA members in future discussions
about major policy changes. Members elected six new
Interim Directors nominated by the remaining Board:
Becky Fiedler – Computer Mentoring, Quilting Group, and
special technology projects as needed
Ken Fugler – Canoe Club President
Ann Grant – Volunteer with CSS Gentle Exercise Program
Roger Stevens – Member of Canoe Club and longtime volunteer
with CSS Outreach
Mike Woof – Sound technician for special events
Ross Knechtel, a previous Board member, was nominated from
the floor.
After the election of the new Interim Directors, everyone’s attention
turned to the motions provided by the Save CSS campaign. The
motions addressed the establishment of a trustworthy proxy voting
process for the 2020 AGM; a recommitment to term limits for Directors;
and, of course, support for Community Support Services. Another
motion reminded the Board that GWSA is a membership organization
and instructed the Board to revise Governance documents
to more accurately reflect that fact and to increase transparency.
Members voted to pass all motions and the new Board immediately
agreed to begin working under the new rules.
If you would like to help shape the future direction of the GWSA,
please consider volunteering for one of the organization’s committees.
You’ll find committee descriptions and a form to indicate your
interest elsewhere in this month’s Sentinel.
Your new Board will be hard at work preparing for the AGM on
the 25th of this month. We hope to see you there!
THE EDITOR’S PAGE by Linda Green
It's that time of year when the outdoors beckon!
Spending time outdoors is good for all ages, but
especially beneficial if you are “getting up there” in
years. It increases our vitamin D levels, which helps fight
certain conditions such as osteoporosis, cancer, heart
attacks and depression. Make getting outside one of your
goals for the summer, spending less time in front of the
television or computer. Just making the trip to attend an
indoor function can have some of the same health
benefits. The health and social benefits of staying active
are plentiful. Of course, you want to keep summer
safety in mind. Summer can bring extreme heat that will
increase the risk of dehydration, heat stroke, and other
health risks, so be sure to practise safety first.
Summer Ideas for Those with Mobility Issues
Picnic at a Local Park or Playground - get back to
nature by packing a lunch and eating outdoors. Your
grandchildren might enjoy this outing as well. You can
also just sit on a bench and enjoy the neighbourhood
children having fun.
Reinvent your Green Thumb - did you always enjoy
gardening? There is no need to give it up even if you
have mobility issues that keep you from bending over.
Plant your vegetables or flowers in raised flowerbeds or
pots. Adapt or purchase tools that will make working in
the garden easier.
Join or Start your Own Book Club - if your
community does not have a book club, invent one. Ask
you local churches for help in getting the word out or
check with your local library; they may have an existing
program. Then start by just sharing books that each of
you have enjoyed.
Attend a Coffee Group - or start one with your friends
and neighbours. Members can take turns hosting in their
homes. Meet once a week or monthly.
Community Events
Attend Museum Activities - many museums offer
summer activities.
Art Walk / Gallery Openings - Stroll your downtown to
see what local artists offer. To see what your community
offers, check the community events calendar in the
newspaper.
Catch a Sporting Event - this can be any local sporting
event. Enjoy a local Little League team, your
grandchild’s team, minor league or even a professional
event. Many stadiums offer discounts for senior citizens.
Walk Around the Flea Markets, Farmers Markets, or
Craft Shows – check the community events section in
your local newspaper or news broadcasting.
Catch an Outdoor Theatre or Concert Event - again
check your local media community events section.
took the time to complete and
return the volunteer survey. We
received quite a large amount of
surveys providing comments,
feedback and suggestions. All
surveys have been reviewed and
the suggestions made have been
taken into consideration.
A few follow-up comments:
-A reminder to all volunteers:
you are permitted to have one
free beverage during your volunteer
shift on the day you are volunteering.
You are required to
have your name tag on to receive
your free beverage from the Dining
Room or front desk.
-Recording of your hours is very
important and plays a key component
in the statistics for the
volunteer program. We are encouraging
volunteers to use the
Volgistics database to log your
hours. All volunteers are required
to submit or log your
hours on a daily, weekly or
monthly basis. If you are still not
able to sign in for your hours or
if you have any questions or
need assistance, please speak to
Samantha in the main office.
I am very open to listen and
receive feedback regarding your
volunteer experience on an ongoing
basis to improve and or
support all volunteer positions
and roles. Any feedback or suggestions
in helping the volunteer
program better is strongly encouraged
as you, as the volunteer,
Your feedback is
greatly appreciated and helps to
maintain a strong volunteer team
Program Manager, Senior Services by Adam Rutherford
Sometimes the ball bounces your way….
Hello GWSA members, friends and supporters!
A few nights ago, I was lucky enough to attend
the Toronto Raptors’ final game in their best of 7
series with the Philadelphia 76ers. The game was a
bit messy, the crowd and home team were visibly
nervous, and the game came down to one final
shot. Miraculously, Toronto’s star player, Kawhi
Leonard launched a shot as the game clock expired.
The ball bounced an unheard of 4 times on
the rim – each bounce looking more and more likely
to not fall in the home team’s favour before gently
falling into the hoop. In those 4 bounces and 1
second of time, the team’s fortunes went from dire
to hopeful to elation and success.
Driving home that night, I was initially left with
the feeling that we/the home team got lucky…but
with more thought, I decided, no, the team and
Kawhi weren’t lucky, they were prepared. Despite
being nervous, they believed in themselves and a
season of preparation for these moments meant that
in the end, they were ready.
So what does this have to do with the Sentinel,
the GWSA, or my updates as the Manager of the
Evergreen? Well, I’d like to believe that, despite a
tough month in and around the Evergreen, despite
nervousness and some apprehension, and lots of
noise and opinions coming from every angle…we
are strong, we’ve been preparing for the tough
days, we’re a team that believes in each other, and
this month, that ball bounced 4 times on the rim
and fell into the basket just as it was supposed to.
We deserve a bit of celebration, we deserve to pat
each other on the back, and we couldn’t have made
it through this month without being a strong team.
Yes, just like the playoff team, we’re not done yet,
and much hard work is to come but we’re in this
together. Speaking from the heart, I’m very proud
to be associated with every one of you (members,
staff, volunteers, board) and I thank you for stepping
up when the GWSA needed you the most!
In other news, the calendar tells me that spring
has sprung but the view from my office window
tells me something much different. Fortunately,
June is just around the corner! I encourage all
members to stay involved. We have our Annual
General Meeting scheduled for June 25 (I hope to
see as many of you as possible there). June is Seniors
Month with many events planned, including
our Seniors Pride Event on June 6, Retire in Style
on June 7, and our annual Seniors Walk from the
Evergreen to City Hall booked for June 13. Did I
mention the AGM on June 25? I look forward to
seeing all of you at these events, in the Evergreen
and at the AGM.
June 15 – A Day We Can All Make a Difference
On June 15, Elder Abuse Ontario will join communities
locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to heighten
awareness of elder abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness
Day (WEAAD) focuses attention on the need for ALL to
take responsibility in preventing elder abuse. It’s vital that
caregivers, family members and seniors themselves know
the warning signs and how to proactively act when elder
abuse is suspected. Take a moment to check your knowledge
about this important issue affecting so many.
1.
2.
3.
4.
If you answered ‘FALSE’ to the questions above, you understand
what elder abuse is about.
any older adults may not
recognize the signs that it is occurring; they may fear disclosure
will only make the situation worse or they are unaware
of the options available to them.
People often think elder abuse refers only to physical violence
like hitting, but this is only one form. According to
Canada’s Department of Justice, ‘abuse’ refers to “harm
done to anyone by a person in a position of trust or authority.”
Harm, in this definition, is not limited to physical harm,
it also includes sexual abuse as well as “psychological abuse,
financial abuse, neglect or any combination thereof.”
In 2014–2015, the National Initiative for the Care of the
Elderly (NICE) conducted a national survey to estimate the
prevalence of the five forms of elder abuse in communitydwelling
Canadians who were 55 years of age or older.
When neglect was added to psychological, physical, sexual
and financial abuse, 8.2%, representing 766,247 older Canadian
adults, reported being abused in the past year.
WEAAD (WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS
DAY) was proclaimed by the United Nations and the World
Health Organization on June 15, 2006, and is marked internationally
each year since.
WEAAD supports the United Nation’s International Plan
of Action, acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as
a public health and human rights issue. Since its inception,
communities throughout the country and around the world
used this day to raise the visibility of elder abuse by sharing
information about abuse and neglect and promoting the resources
and services that increase seniors’ safety and wellbeing.
In Guelph, the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington
and Elder Abuse Ontario are presenting a free event on
Thursday, June 13, from 10 a.m. - noon at the Evergreen
Centre called “Aging Well in Wellington”. The program
will introduce Elder Abuse Ontario’s Safety Planning
Toolkit, and discuss enhanced communication techniques
when interacting with a person who has dementia. Preregistration
is required by calling the Alzheimer Society at
519-742-1422.
If you would like more information or to be involved in
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, please contact Elder
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much
the same manner as an artist’s
brush or pencil. The Bunka artist
uses many different stitch tech-
Hearing Improvement
The Hearing Improvement Committee
of Guelph has the objective
of helping fellow citizens with
hearing loss by co-operating with
and assisting professionals who
deal with it; promoting hearing accessibility
within our own community;
holding regular information
sessions to encourage greater understanding
of the problem and
what is available to help it.
We meet the first Wednesday of
each month from October through
May from 2-3:30 pm in the Boardroom.
We discuss problems affecting
those with hearing loss and try
to find solutions. Our meetings also
have a social component. For
further information, call Marianne
at 519-822-3946.
Line Dancing
Line dances are choreographed
dances with a repeating series of
steps that are performed in unison
by a group of people in lines, rows
or circles. One of the great things
about line dancing is that no experience
is necessary. Line dances
are easy to learn, and as with any
other style of dance, the more you
do it, the better you will become.
Instructors do a walk-through before
each dance and then demonstrate
and call the steps as the music
plays. You don’t need a partner,
just come have fun. We dance all
year to a wide variety of music.
Everyone welcome!
Our classes are for beginner to improved
(beginner plus):
Mondays – 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
We teach basic steps at 9:15 a.m.
Thursdays -1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
We teach basic steps at 12:45 p.m.
lot more fun going on field trips
when the ground is dry and the ice
is gone. This was especially true in
May when our monthly theme was
farm animals.
Our May “field trip” didn’t take
us far afield. We stayed in town
and experienced the ambience of
Woodlawn Cemetery. It is very
much alive with memories of our
city’s rich history. You’ll find
some of our photos on our website:
at https://intofocus.smugmug.com/.
Our theme for June is “water”.
Guelph and Wellington County are
fortunate to have two scenic rivers
flowing through them. We’ll be
out photographing them, and the
very many other ways in which
water touches our lives.
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment
ranging from mobile phones and
point and shoot cameras to fancy
DSLR models. We share a common
interest in photography as a
hobby and we learn from each other.
New members are always welcome.
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton
court and a net and rules similar to
tennis, with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all
ages who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be
challenging for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill
invited. Pickleball equipment is
provided.
Scrabble
Our Scrabble group meets Thursdays
from 1:00 pm to 3:45 pm at
the tables in the Evergreen Hallway
near the Library. Cost is $1.00
per visit. We play relaxed but challenging
games using the Scrabble
Dictionary 6 th Edition as our reference.
Skill levels range from beginner
to advanced. Come play at
whatever table you wish. Enjoy a
laugh, score a Bingo if you can,
and learn a new word or two with
other word lovers!
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise, friendship
and fun. Membership is available
to all paid-up GWSA members
for a $10 fee every six
months. You also have the option
of paying $1.00 per game. Register
the first time you play. Beginners
are welcome and instruction is
available. The group plays Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 1:30 to
3 p.m.
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir was formed
in 1980 and now boasts over 55
members. The mixed group of seniors
share the love of singing -
to entertain with their singing and
to spread cheer.
Having completed a very successful
winter program of singouts
in local retirement homes,
etc., the choir is now on its summer
break. It will reconvene on
Friday, September 6, at 1:00 pm
and will be working on the Christmas
Ceilidh - this year’s variety
show - amongst other things.
the front desk of the Evergreen
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the
club room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While
most of the current members are
men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly
(typically on Tuesday mornings),
so ladies, don’t be shy, give it a
try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $70 (plus tax) buys you access
to the Snooker Room any
time it is open and all the snooker
you care to play.
Texas Hold ’Em
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about
16 players a week. We are situated
in the Dining Room, as we find
this a more comfortable place to
play and the tables are exactly
right for us.
We charge $1.50 per week and
pretty well all of that goes to
GWSA. Our time is from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m.
Each player starts off with $602
in real casino chips. We do not
play for money, but more for bragging
rights. The one with the most
chips each week is the winner. We
play until there is only one player
left or 8:30 comes, whichever is
first.
We will gladly teach anyone
who is interested in playing. Our
aim is to have fun and enjoy a sociable
game of Texas Hold ’Em.
We welcome everyone who wants
to play and enjoys company.
Remember, you have to be a
member of GWSA to play.
Walking Club
Our walking club has resumed after
a not too bad winter. We meet
at the orange roofed pavilion in
Riverside Park every Thursday
morning, rain or shine. We assemble
at 9:30 a.m. for registering,
collection of fees and we depart at
10 a.m. sharp. All walkers must
be current members of the Guelph/
Wellington Seniors Association
and these memberships are available
from the Evergreen Centre.
Walkers may join the Walking
Club any time during the year for a
fee of $10 per year paid at the Evergreen
Centre. It is a friendly
group and we are always glad to
see new members.
Watercolour Painters Club
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
Club provides an opportunity
for watercolour painters to practise
their hobby along with others sharing
the same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving
information, ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes
or lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the
GWSA is required. We meet on
the 1st and 5th Wednesday from
12:30 to 4:00 pm and the 3rd
Wednesday from 9:30 am - 4:00
pm in Room 2.
Membership and Marketing
Committee Corner
A great time was had by all!!! That is the sentiment on our Open House. Sorry if you missed it. Thank
you to all those who attended, engaging in your regular activities and helping in a myriad of ways. Yes, we
had many more guests than in the past. We gave out prizes, and plants if you took out a membership.
Some people were there all day - playing scrabble and chess or stitching bunka or shooting darts and
playing badminton. The Mayor dropped in and asked for a picture with some of our members.
Our parking attendants suitably moaned for all those who had to park down the hill. Everyone enjoyed
free coffee and cookies. The morning was the busiest time. A great commotion of organized chaos was
most obvious.
Thank you one and all for your participation and your help. I would say that you all made GWSA
proud.
Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome. Just drop a note in the M & M mailbox in the
office or email me.
to Receive Electronic Communications”, we are asking
you to complete the electronic sign-up process
described below. We can’t sign you up manually
AND have our list editor keep track of the CASL
(Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation) compliance for
those paper forms. It’s one way or the other and we
have chosen to use the electronic option.
You can receive the GWSA Email Updates by
completing the steps described below:
1. To begin, please send an email to subscribe@gwsa
a link.
2. Click on the link you received, fill in the appropriate
fields, and click “Subscribe to List”.
3. To ensure you really want to receive GWSA email
confirm.
4. Once you respond to the confirmation message,
your registration is complete and you’ll receive our
Welcome letter.
We have also placed a link under the “Popular
Budget Friendly Activities for Seniors
Bird Watching - with a small investment in a bird
feeder and/or birdbath, many hours of bird watching can
be enjoyed. Keeping the feeder full and water in the
birdbath are daily activities to keep you busy. This can
be a more in-depth activity by borrowing books from
your local library and identifying the various birds that
will visit. A pair of binoculars enables you to bird watch
beyond your own back yard and could help with vision
issues.
Be a Tourist in Your Home Town - check for local
summer activities and take a day to reacquaint yourself
with your surroundings and nearby attractions. You may
even want to start strolling around your neighborhood. If
you feel a walk would be good for you, start out with
just a couple of minutes and increase by a minute or two
each day, building strength with each step.
Swimming or Water Aerobics - many community
pools offer activities and specific times for elderly
participation. Simply walking around in the water has
great health benefits while being very easy on your
joints. Consider taking a water aerobics or exercise
class.
Plan a Garden Party or Tea Party - invite your
friends, set up tables and chairs, stroll through the
garden and enjoy the beauty you may have right in your
own back yard. You can keep this a simple event or go
to great lengths with decorations and entertainment. The
possibilities are endless.
Go for a Nature Walk - gather the little ones around
you and take them for a nature walk pointing out all the
wonders of Mother Nature. Plan a scavenger hunt.
Google nature scavenger hunt and check out all the
possibilities.
Check out the Sights at the Local Mall - even if
shopping is not your thing, find a bench and do some
people watching or simply stroll around checking out
what is new. People watching can often lead to a few
laughs and I see many people at our local mall enjoying
this activity.
Check out Bookstore Activities - bookstores, especially
the bigger chains, have activities year around - or maybe
you just want to sit in the café area and read a good
book.
Set up Some Simple Yard Games - and invite friends -
some old time favorites are the beanbag toss, horseshoes,
croquet, shuffleboard, and bocce.
Remember to keep moving, keep learning, keep
challenging your brain, and keep engaging your senses.
Take time to smell the roses and enjoy your summer!
Nancy Gibner, Peggy Moore, Joan Bruder,
and Terry Keleher)
The GWSA Travel Committee thanks you with appreciation
for your recommendations and for your participation
on our bus trips.
Recently
Forty-five people had a great time on our visit to Bingemans
Park on April 17.
May 9 found forty-one folks travelling on the Great Canadian
Bus Line to the Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara
Falls for another fun-filled day.
Upcoming
Thirty-five of us will be going to the McLaughlin Home
in Oshawa on June 18. We have a guided tour planned
followed by a delicious buffet lunch at the Mandarin.
The famous “Ladykillers” comedy based on the 1955
British black comedy crime film is on our agenda at the
Shaw Festival on July 4. This famous story is so popular
that Terry has a waiting list.
Brand new to our travel roster is a trip to St. Catharines
on July 25 for The Foster Festival. The plays are inspired
by internationally renowned Canadian playwright Norm
Foster. We are excited to see “Hilda’s Yard”. Set in 1956,
this delightful comedy sparkles with unexpected twists
and. . . we have a Q & A with the actors afterwards.
Once again, the Grand River Cruise is setting sail on
August 14. Nancy has organized a delicious on-board
lunch.
Joanne said to mark your calendar for the Grand River
Raceway on August 21.
Don’t get too excited yet . . . but!
The committee is working on a September trip to Orangeville
or a visit to Norfolk County.
October is an excellent time of year for Joanne to organize
a CHEESE Trail event in Woodstock, hopefully followed
by a mystery event.
A favourite, the Royal Winter Fair, is being considered
for November 5.
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is another wonderful
place to visit. Our plans are in place with Terry firming
up the details.
Casey’s Rebuttal to Clancy (May Issue)
by Ross Coulter
Hi! I’m Casey, Clancy the “Huphalump’s” roommate.
I am a tabby with few flaws. I have a small tan
birthmark to one side of my nose and one pink pad
on one of my paws. Other than that, I have typical
tabby black and tan colouring with white fur from
my chin and extending to my chest and tummy. I
have velvety smooth fur sides and back laid out in a
predominantly symmetrical pattern. Clancy may
think he’s more good looking with his tuxedo suit,
but he always looks disheveled despite his morning
brush. I’m younger than him by two years and much,
much slimmer - one might even say svelte. Clancy is
just plain fat. It’s no secret how he got that way.
Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, I never finish my
whole dish of food at once and when I go back to
lick up the leftovers, Clancy has beaten me to it.
There’s no question he is food driven!
We get along reasonably well by mostly ignoring
each other, but on occasion, we snuggle together in
front of the fireplace. Sometimes I have to nudge
Clancy out of the way to make room for myself; with
his size, he takes up most of it. There is no question
as to who is the alpha in our relationship, I am. Clancy
is a bit of a wuss, so soft, so gentle, and he sleeps
most of the time except at meal times. There are moments
though when his jealousy shows, and it hurts.
When we are quiet by the fire, he will start grooming
me, licking my head, then my neck. Clancy has very
long fangs and he will give me little nips and then
really sink them in. Of course I screech loud and
clear like any cat would and my master jumps in immediately,
threatening with the newspaper he’s reading
and we separate with a scolding. He makes sure
we each go in different directions, otherwise we
would be chasing each other.
I really love my Master and Mistress. Here I agree
with Clancy, they’re really staff that tends to all our
needs. One of my needs is almost constant attention,
the source of one of Clancy’s complaints. When the
man goes out, I sit on the door mat and wait for his
return, and when he does, I rub my face all over his
legs and reach up with my paw. Once he takes off
his shoes, I give a couple of little yelps (I don’t meow
like Clancy or other cats) and he picks me up for
a cuddle and calls me his little puppy. I guess that’s
because I follow him all over the house, upstairs,
downstairs, everywhere, just waiting for him to sit
somewhere so I can jump in his lap to feel the
warmth of his hands as he pets me. No doubt I have
him wrapped around both front paws. Proof of that
comes at the noon and evening meal times. While
Clancy’s stomach food alarm goes off at the appointed
times with his meek meows,
I’m resting or sleeping in one of
my favourite chairs in the basement
rec room. With food dishes
set out and Clancy chowing down,
the man comes to tell me it’s meal time. I
wait, give him a couple cute yelps and he then
picks me up and carries me upstairs, cuddling me
and telling me I’m his cute little brat cat. (That’s
probably where Clancy picked up his reference to
me as “Brat”). I show him how much I love him by
licking his hands all the way to my food dish.
The other staff member in the household, the lady,
has her role to play, too. Every night before bedtime,
she gives both Clancy and me a few flavoured treats.
She is strict about it though - she makes us sit and
reach out with our paw before she gives them to us.
In the morning, she likes to play “kibble toss” by
throwing kibble around for us to chase. She throws
them in different directions for each of us so we
don’t wind up fighting for the same piece. Then she
hides some underneath several of the cat toys laying
around and expects us to find them. We do! She is
also the head nurse, looking after any little thing that
might ail us. I remember when Clancy had a bowel
problem and had to see the Vet. What a mess he was
and what a stink, but the nurse looked after him pretty
good. Once I had a sore around my mouth and the
Vet prescribed some pills to cure the infection. They
were horrible tasting and the lady tried to hide them
in a pill pocket. I fooled her though. I worked the pill
out, spit it on the floor and ate the pill pocket. It tasted
great, but she soon found a different way of getting
the medicine into me.
As you can read, Clancy is not unfounded in his
criticisms. I am the ALPHA cat, I am cute, I am
much slimmer than he is and I demand and receive
more attention than he does. After 12 years together
we do seem to get along for the most part. So be it!
For those of you who have enjoyed
reading the Seven Sister series,
here is the 5 th book, “The
Moon Sister” by Lucinda Riley.
Tiggy, a wildlife consultant, begins
working in a remote area of
the Scottish Highlands on the estate
of Charlie Kinnaird. Tiggy
was hired to care for 4 Scottish
wildcats in the hopes of breeding
them. Soon Tiggy meets Chilly,
who lives in a remote cottage on
the estate and is an elderly Romani
man who had fled Spain many
years ago. He tells her she possesses
a sixth sense which she inherited
from her ancestors and that one
day she would go to her home and
find them.
In 1912, in a poor gitano community
outside the city of Grenada,
Lucia Albacyin lives with her family
until her father takes her at the
age of 10 to Barcelona to dance the
flamenco. She is a very talented
dancer, and she yearns to become
famous. Her mother Maria is not
happy to see her leave but knows
she will do well and one day become
very famous.
A few years later when tensions
erupt causing the civil war, Lucia
and her troupe flee Spain and manage
to go to Portugal. She becomes
famous there too, but still has the
dream to go to New York to become
famous there. Back in the
caves in Grenada, where she came
from, her mother struggles during
this difficult time, raising two sons
and trying to keep them all safe.
Tiggy will travel eventually to
Granada to find her ancestors and
will be told the story of her famous
grandmother and all her other family.
This is another riveting book I
could not put down. It’s a wonderful
story of the past and present
and I hope you will enjoy reading
it as much as I did.
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful
summer.
Happy Reading,
THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY — JUNE 6, 1944
Submitted by Leah Broadhurst Batty ex WAAF
Our recent weather has been ever-changing and surprising, oft times very inconveniently.
Imagine then, the predicament of the Allied Commanders in 1944 wrestling with
pinpointing the right date to start the Second Front, soon to be known as D- Day. May
had been experiencing a heatwave and the British public were determined to holiday at
the seaside, somewhere. Few trains were available and the coasts were restricted areas,
especially on the south coasts. The military might of the Allies was all ready and waiting
for the word ‘Go!’
At SHAEF HQ north of Southampton, the military commanders were meeting regularly,
watching the weather through the eyes of Group Captain Stagg, a dour 6 ft 3in Scot, a
skilled meteorologist. His early predictions in June were depressing with gale force
winds, low clouds and continuing depressions. On the 5th of June at 3:30 a.m., Eisenhower
got up and made his way to HQ. Stagg was already working the scrambler phones
to get the latest weather reports. All the group of commanders settled and Stagg put them
out of their misery. “Gentlemen,” he began, “no substantial change has taken place since
last time but as I see it, the little that has changed is in the direction of optimism.” The
Commander-in-chief, now completely relaxed, expressed his appreciation and uttered the
historic words, “Now we’ll go.” It was 5 a.m.
The irrevocable decision had been made…tomorrow, June the 6 th , would be D-Day.
Now we would become aware of the Allies might and ingenuity and the thousands of
men who would be involved in this great armada! The costs would be enormous and
grievous. Knowing this, the Order of the Day from the Allied Commander, D. D. Eisenhower,
to all Allied troops was as follows: “Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Expeditionary
Forces! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, towards we have striven
these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of
liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our Allies and brothers-in-arms
on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the Germans’ war
machine, elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed people of Europe, and security for
ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well
equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much
has happened since the triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the
Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced
their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and
placed at our disposal, great reserves of fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men
of the world are marching together to Victory! I have full confidence in your courage,
devotion to duty and skill in battle! We will accept nothing less than full victory! Good
Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble
undertaking.”
The secrecy of this event was so great that mostly the public were carrying out whatever
their daily routine demanded. I was ambling down Exhibition Road in South Kensington
with a fellow Airwoman to our Mess for breakfast in the basement of the Victoria
and Albert Museum. We were very tired as there was a lot of air activity from early
morning, which we thought was a massive air raid. Looking up, we saw big planes towing
gliders, which were all painted with wide white stripes, not the usual roundels or
stars. How odd! On arriving at the mess, the place was in an uproar with excitement. So
this is D-Day!! We ambled to our classroom in the Science Museum, although we didn’t
feel like pondering over the theories of wireless circuits, and the operations of transmitters
and receivers, and we noticed our neighbours in the next classroom out in the yard
and very excited. We left and joined them and, as they were Free French sailors, also on
a radio course. They were dancing and singing with joy, ending with a rousing Marseillaise!
The recollection of an heroic episode in our recent past should be remembered with
awe and appreciation, but also with gratitude and sadness, for the loss of the many who
did not survive.
After the war, Eisenhower worked in many leadership roles, notably as the 34th President
of the US in 1953 for two terms. He was succeeded by John F. Kennedy, himself
another Second World War veteran. Kennedy once asked Eisenhower what gave him the
edge over the Germans on D-Day. “I think we had better weather forecasters,” Eisenhower
replied.
