The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo mark
a milestone for board sports with the inclusion of
skateboarding and surfing disciplines to the games.
Not only does this provide opportunities for Canadian skaters
and surfers to get support, training, and facilities, but it
also legitimizes the sports in the eyes of the general public.
Skateboarding and surfing have lived happily under the
radar for years, but have been used mercilessly in corporate
advertising with the lion’s share of profits going to large
corporations while athletes earn a fraction of that of athletes
competing in more traditional sports.
Their inclusion into the Olympics gives young athletes more
opportunities to pursue and improve at their passions while
also getting the privilege to represent their homeland in front
of the entire world. In every Ukeedaze issue leading up to
the games we will feature an athlete who is a favourite to
represent Canada in either skateboarding or surfing. This
issue’s athlete is Bethany Zelasko.
One year out of high school, and fresh off her back to back
gold in the women's division at the Rip Curl Canadian
National Surf Championship, Bethany Zelasko is a force to be
reckoned with. The goofy footed Californian with Canadian
roots is a stand out in the water and may be Canada's best
shot at getting on the Olympic podium at the 2020 Summer
Games in Tokyo, Japan. We were stoked to be able to catch up
with Bethany before the event and ask her some questions. We
suspect she will be a fixture in the Canadian National Team in
the coming years.
