Garden Tips For June

Lawns

• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.

• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.

Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.

• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80

degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part

of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.

Flowers

• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.

• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of

the beautiful foliage.

• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,

Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,

Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,

Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.

Vegetables

• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the

rest of the day.

• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant

sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.

Shrubs

• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next

season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with

oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.

Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of

material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve

water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the

drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation

water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,

a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

4Th Annual Corporate

Challenge Brings

Team-Building Field Day To Cy-Fair

The 2019 Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce Corporate Challenge,

underwritten by Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, brought together

Cy-Fair businesses for a day of team building, networking and fun. The day

included five events: The Bucket Challenge, The Chamber Challenge (3-legged

race), Climb to the Top (climbing relay race), the Corporate Combine football

relay challenge and “Networking” (seated volleyball challenge).

It was a beautiful day that kicked off with warm-up exercises and

stretching guided by Lea Mesa of Shaka Power Yoga. The teams were

then given their challenge rotations for the day and they were off to

compete against each other in the five challenges set up on the green

space and beach outside the Lakehouse at Towne Lake. The participants

then enjoyed lunch from the Backyard Grill and Boar’d to Death food

trucks while the scores were calculated for the teams and the winners

determined. Awards were presented to the first, second and third place

teams. The winning team will receive bragging rights until the next year’s

challenge, which will allow marketing exposure for that business or team

for the entire year.

This year’s champions are the team from McCall Gibson Swedlund

Barfoot, PLLC. They are our first repeat winners. Their team took the

award for first place at the 2017 Corporate Challenge. Second place was

awarded to the team from VillaSport Athletic Club & Spa. The team that

finished in third place was one of two from INSite Architecture, Inc.

Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is the event underwriter.

Additional sponsors to date include Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital,

Caldwell Companies, JPL Entertainment, Cypress Photo Camper,

Jumping Fiesta Rentals and Northwest Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. Water

was provided for the participants and volunteers by Kroger Marketplace

at Towne Lake.

Sponsorship opportunities and teams are now available for next year. For

more information, email Eric@cyfairchamber.com or call the Chamber

office at 281-373-1390.

17TH ANNUAL PASS IN REVIEW SHOWCASES DISTRICT’S AFJROTC CADETS

More than 1,000 cadets representing CFISD’s 12 comprehensive high schools and eight JROTC units displayed their discipline and uniformity at the

district’s 17 th Annual Air Force Junior ROTC Pass in Review, held April 6 th at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.

The Pass in Review is a military tradition designed to display the readiness of troops and their units to a newly assigned commander. The event featured

three reviewing officials: retired CFISD Educator Carolyn Spillane, who is the namesake for Spillane Middle School, artist Ken Pridgeon and Tech. Sgt. Joe

Campbell, a Jersey Village High School aerospace science instructor who is set to retire after 18 years serving the school’s JROTC unit.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for the public to actually see just a portion of what these cadets can do and what they show,” Campbell said. “In

order to put something like this together, it takes times and dedication from the students. And it helps show that we’re not just about push-ups.

Cypress Springs High School AFJROTC Unit TX-20016 served as the host school for the Pass in Review. The school’s unit is led by Lt. Col. Charles Pryor

III and Chief Master Sgt. Michael Galifaro. Cypress Springs senior Solé Ibarra served as the commander of troops.

Among the guests in attendance were family members of the cadets, Board of Trustees members and campus and district administrators.

CFISD LEADERS VISIT PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES

AT ‘MEET AND GREET’ CAREER FAIR

CFISD administrators and leaders from its 91 campuses and numerous

departments visited with approximately 1,300 prospective employees at

the 2019 ‘Meet and Greet’ Career Fair, held April 24 th at the Berry Center.

The fair offers district administrators opportunities to interact with

prospective teachers and employees. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the thirdlargest

district in Texas and 23 rd largest in the nation, making it one of the

largest employers in northwest Harris County.

Providing Insurance

and Financial Services

Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois 61710

Primary campuses were set up inside the arena, secondary campuses were

located in the conference center and departments were split between the

arena and atrium. Attendees formed lines near each table, with each then

spending a few minutes with campus administrators or departments,

distributing resumes and possibly setting up follow-up interaction.

“The 2019 Career Fair was a huge success,” said Chairita Franklin,

assistant superintendent for human resources. “The Career Fair was well

attended by teacher and paraprofessional applicants who are interested

in starting their professional journeys or transferring to our district. Many

had one-on-one opportunities with our campus administrators through

previously scheduled interviews or the meet-and-greet format. We are

excited that once again, over 1,000 applicants are considering CFISD

and we look forward to sourcing those applicants to find the best and

brightest for our students.”

CFISD BOND REFERENDUM PASSES WITH

MAJORITY VOTER SUPPORT

Registered voters in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District

approved a $1.762 billion bond referendum on May 4, 2019. The school

district drew a majority vote from the community, with the uncanvassed

count at 9,848 votes cast FOR and 4,144 votes cast AGAINST the

referendum. The approval rating for the bond referendum was 70.38

percent. Early voting accounted for 7,848 votes or 56.09 percent, of the

total votes cast. The referendum is for:

• safety and security enhancements to all campuses;

• transportation, including a new northwest center and additional buses

to accommodate student growth;

• new facilities to accommodate student growth;

• technology upgrades to district infrastructure and classroom

technology and

• renovations and additions to protect the district’s instructional and

support facilities.

“Cypress-Fairbanks community members continue to be vocal in

supporting public education for their children and today, they spoke at

the polls,” said Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “I want to give

a heartfelt thank you to the long-range planning committee that spent

dozens of hours planning for the district’s future and district staff and

community members who led and facilitated public bond presentations.

Our community’s commitment to a quality public education was evident

with the approval of this bond, which will impact all CFISD students for

years to come.”

The maximum potential increase on the Interest and Sinking (I&S) Tax

rate or debt service tax rate resulting from the passage of the bond

referendum is projected to be $0.03 over a seven-year period. This

equates to $40.50 per year for a home valued at $200,000. There will be

no tax increase for individuals who are 65 years of age or older or who are

disabled and who qualify for an over-65 homestead exemption according

to Texas Property Tax Code Section 11.26.

The committee presented its recommendation for a $1,762,000,000 bond

package to the Board of Trustees in February and the Board unanimously

called for a bond election during a regularly scheduled meeting on Feb.

NATIONAL PTSD AWARENESS DAY

National PTSD Awareness Day is observed annually on June 27 th . This

is a day to recognize the effects post-traumatic stress has on the lives of

those affected by it.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has a profound effect on the lives of those

who suffer from it. The statistics alone are staggering, but can only tell a

portion of the story. The trauma and anxiety associated with PTSD is a

constant burden, inseparable from the sufferer. It was once a condition

that was attributed only to returning combat veterans, but more and

more the condition is diagnosed in those who have experienced violent

crime or lived through catastrophic events. According to PTSD United,

20% of adults in the United States who have experienced a traumatic

event suffer from PTSD.

The United States Senate established PTSD Awareness Day in 2010

following then-Sen. Kent Conrad’s efforts to designate a day of

awareness as a tribute to Army Staff Sgt. Joe Biel of the North Dakota

National Guard, Davison said. Biel suffered from PTSD and took his life

in April 2007 after returning to North Dakota following his second tour of

duty in the Iraq War. Biel’s birthday, June 27 th , was chosen to mark PTSD

Awareness Day and honor his memory.

St. John XXIII College Preparatory is pleased to announce the inaugural

entry of a decorated car in the annual Houston Art Car Parade.

From inception, artists, participants and visitors have come from places

far and wide each year to delight in seeing the nearly 250 cars that are

uniquely decorated, constructed and illuminated “drivable” works

St. John XXIII Student

Earns Perfect Score on

National Latin Exam

St. John XXIII College Preparatory Principal, Mr. Tim Gallic, is pleased

to announce freshman Cate Silas earned a perfect score on the recent

National Latin Exam. The National Latin Exam is a third-party organization

designed to assess competency in each Latin Level. Individual awards

are dependent upon the student’s performance in relation to the

performance from all the test submissions for that particular level across

the nation.

Last month, all St. John XXIII Latin students took the National Latin

Exam. Of the 33 students who sat for the exam, 18 received awards, with

nine students receiving the highest award of Gold Medal and one of these

was a perfect score attributed to Silas.

The philosophy of the National Latin Exam (NEL) is predicated on

providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of

personal accomplishment and success in his study of the Latin language

and culture. This opportunity exists for each individual student since, on

the National Latin Exam, he is not competing with his fellow student on a

comparative basis but is evaluated solely on his own performance on the

exam. The basic purposes of the NLE are to promote the study of Latin

and to encourage the individual student. For more information, please

visit the National Latin Exam website, nle.org.

ST. AIDAN’S SETS SUMMER VBS

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School

again and the folks at St. Aidan’s have another great program planned.

Scheduled for the week of July 8 th -12 th , St. Aidan’s usually hosts about

80 children. This year’s theme is ROAR: Life is wild. God is Good. We

usually have Bahama Bucks on the last day. That is always a big treat for

our students. And, last year, we hosted Wild Things Zoofari. They brought

a wallaby, a toucan, a lemur and a hedgehog. Everyone really enjoyed

that.”

Cost of VBS is $30. Scholarships are available for families in-need. New

for this year, we are adding Triumph Sports so our students will have

a full-day option. From 12-4 PM, Triumph will run a Bible-based sports

camp. Participants will play dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag,

basketball, soccer and more. Early registration for this afternoon session

is $105 before June 1 st . After June 1 st , cost goes up to $115. Registration

is already open at aidanschurch.org. For additional information, please
