HOWDY NEIGHBOR!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Thank you to those who have cleaned your bronze street number plate
on your home exterior. PLEASE make sure your house number is visible
from the street. You might need to lower the shrubs that are blocking the
visibility of your house numbers. Or polish/clean the plate. This is very
important because in the event an emergency vehicle needs to find you
and can’t, it might be critical in time lost.
HOA DUES ARE NOW PAST DUE
If you haven’t paid your 2019 dues yet, please contact Inframark to make
arrangements to do so. They are now accruing additional fees.
We have an aging neighborhood with a lot of community space, which
requires repair and sometimes replacement. Many of our common space
areas are in need of replacement. Some of our major projects will be to
replace the swing sets, add picnic tables and benches for enjoyment,
enlarge the pool slide and various other projects.
Homeowners Responsibility to keep
Copper Village beautiful
• To mow and edge your yard on a regular basis during the growing
season. No grass should be growing onto the driveway, curb or sidewalk.
• To kill or pull weeds growing in the expansion joints of your driveway,
sidewalk or in your flower beds.
• To prune and groom all shrubs and trees on your property.
• To trim any tree branches that hang low over your sidewalk or into the
street.
• To add mulch around trees and in the flower beds at least once a year
or whenever needed. (if the tree roots are showing, either apply mulch or
dirt and new sod)
• To remove mildew or mold from any brick or siding or concrete.
• WE ARE COPPER VILLAGE PROUD! THANK YOU FOR DOING YOUR PART!
RESIDENTS:
It has come to our attention that many residents are leaving their
grass clippings and shrub clippings out on the curb for days before the
assigned trash pickup. Our trash days are on Monday and Thursday.
Either change your scheduled yard mowing to coordinate with the trash
days OR remove the grass and tree trimmings to the back of your fence
or in your garage until the evening before trash pick-ups. It is a deed
violation to leave your grass clippings or tree branches out days early.
DON’T SWEEP OR BLOW GRASS CLIPPINGS INTO THE STREET GUTTERS.
It clogs our drainage system.
CFISD LEADERS VISIT PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES
AT ‘MEET AND GREET’ CAREER FAIR
CFISD administrators and leaders from its 91 campuses and numerous
departments visited with approximately 1,300 prospective employees at
the 2019 ‘Meet and Greet’ Career Fair, held April 24 th at the Berry Center.
The fair offers district administrators opportunities to interact with
prospective teachers and employees. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is the thirdlargest
district in Texas and 23 rd largest in the nation, making it one of the
largest employers in northwest Harris County.
Primary campuses were set up inside the arena, secondary campuses
were located in the conference center and departments were split
between the arena and atrium. Attendees formed lines near each table,
with each then spending a few minutes with campus administrators or
departments, distributing resumes and possibly setting up follow-up
interaction.
“The 2019 Career Fair was a huge success,” said Chairita Franklin,
assistant superintendent for human resources. “The Career Fair was well
attended by teacher and paraprofessional applicants who are interested
in starting their professional journeys or transferring to our district. Many
had one-on-one opportunities with our campus administrators through
previously scheduled interviews or the meet-and-greet format. We are
excited that once again, over 1,000 applicants are considering CFISD
and we look forward to sourcing those applicants to find the best and
brightest for our students.”
17TH ANNUAL PASS IN REVIEW SHOWCASES
DISTRICT’S AFJROTC CADETS
More than 1,000 cadets representing CFISD’s 12 comprehensive high
April 6 th at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
• Practical Solutions
• Efficient Timing
“This is an outstanding opportunity for the public to actually see just a
portion of what these cadets can do and what they show,” Campbell said.
“In order to put something like this together, it takes times and dedication
from the students. And it helps show that we’re not just about push-ups.
Cypress Springs High School AFJROTC Unit TX-20016 served as the host
school for the Pass in Review. The school’s unit is led by Lt. Col. Charles
Exchange Student HOSTING FAQs
What does hosting mean? Hosting means you open your heart and
home to a teenager from another country. You provide the same loving,
caring environment for them as you do a member of your own family.
What kinds of families are acceptable? We accept many types of
families: single parent families, families with children of any age, childless
families and families with grown children.
What is the host family responsible for? The host family is responsible of
providing three meals a day, registering the student in school, a separate
bed and a quiet place to study. The STSF local LC will obtain the signed
school acceptance form prior to the student’s arrive to the country.
What happens if the student is ill or in an accident? Our students have
their own medical insurance. Each student should have an ID card and
claim forms before they arrive. STSF will help with the filing of claims.
What about spending money? The student’s natural parents agree
to send adequate spending money. This money should be enough for
clothing, social activities, trips, school expenses and telephone calls to
their home country. Ideally, students will already have a bank account
when they come over that they can access with an ATM card. Host Families
can also assist their students in setting up savings or teen account.
Are we supposed to show them America? Trips are organized and
available to the students through their Regional Directors or through
an STSF approved travel organization. Keep in mind that this is an
academic program with opportunities for travel for students who are
meeting academic standards. RDs also sponsor trips for students. More
information about these trips will be given throughout the year.
What is expected of the exchange student? Our students are here on
an academic program. This means, they must attend all of their classes,
participate in class and maintain at least a C or above in each class. The
student has an orientation that explains the rules they agree to abide by. These
include obeying all local, state and federal laws. They may be immediately
dismissed from the program and sent home for violation of these laws. They
are expected to follow host family rules concerning family responsibilities
such as chores. They must also obey curfews established by the host family.
What is the length of stay? Most of our students arrive in August for a
10 month academic stay. They must return to their home country 7 to 10
days after the last day of school. These are a few students who only come
for a semester. Some arrive in January and stay until December. How
do you match students to Host Families? We try to find students whose
hobbies and interest match the family members. We look for common
interest in the arts, sports and religious involvement. The host Family
may request a student from a country they have special interest in. We
try and match as much as possible to ensure a successful experience.
Are Host Families paid to host? No, but host families receive a $50
tax deduction (Charitable Contribution) per month for each month the
students live with you.
What are the rewards of hosting? Your family gains a new family
member. The relationship that evolves throughout your year as a host
parent will last a lifetime. The focus of this program is to have host
families and students learn from each other.
4th ANNUAL CORPORATE
CHALLENGE BRINGS TEAM-
BUILDING FIELD DAY TO CY-FAIR
The 2019 Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce Corporate Challenge,
underwritten by Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, brought together
Cy-Fair businesses for a day of team building, networking and fun. The day
included five events: The Bucket Challenge, The Chamber Challenge (3-legged
race), Climb to the Top (climbing relay race), the Corporate Combine football
relay challenge and “Networking” (seated volleyball challenge).
It was a beautiful day that kicked off with warm-up exercises and
stretching guided by Lea Mesa of Shaka Power Yoga. The teams were
then given their challenge rotations for the day and they were off to
compete against each other in the five challenges set up on the green
space and beach outside the Lakehouse at Towne Lake. The participants
then enjoyed lunch from the Backyard Grill and Boar’d to Death food
trucks while the scores were calculated for the teams and the winners
determined. Awards were presented to the first, second and third place
teams. The winning team will receive bragging rights until the next year’s
challenge, which will allow marketing exposure for that business or team
for the entire year.
This year’s champions are the team from McCall Gibson Swedlund
Barfoot, PLLC. They are our first repeat winners. Their team took the
award for first place at the 2017 Corporate Challenge. Second place was
awarded to the team from VillaSport Athletic Club & Spa. The team that
finished in third place was one of two from INSite Architecture, Inc.
Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is the event underwriter.
Additional sponsors to date include Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital,
Caldwell Companies, JPL Entertainment, Cypress Photo Camper,
Jumping Fiesta Rentals and Northwest Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. Water
was provided for the participants and volunteers by Kroger Marketplace
at Towne Lake.
Sponsorship opportunities and teams are now available for next year. For
more information, email Eric@cyfairchamber.com or call the Chamber
NATIONAL PTSD AWARENESS DAY
National PTSD Awareness Day is observed annually on June 27 th . This
is a day to recognize the effects post-traumatic stress has on the lives of
those affected by it.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has a profound effect on the lives of those
who suffer from it. The statistics alone are staggering, but can only tell a
portion of the story. The trauma and anxiety associated with PTSD is a
constant burden, inseparable from the sufferer. It was once a condition
that was attributed only to returning combat veterans, but more and
more the condition is diagnosed in those who have experienced violent
crime or lived through catastrophic events. According to PTSD United,
20% of adults in the United States who have experienced a traumatic
event suffer from PTSD.
The United States Senate established PTSD Awareness Day in 2010
following then-Sen. Kent Conrad’s efforts to designate a day of
awareness as a tribute to Army Staff Sgt. Joe Biel of the North Dakota
National Guard, Davison said. Biel suffered from PTSD and took his life
in April 2007 after returning to North Dakota following his second tour of
duty in the Iraq War. Biel’s birthday, June 27 th , was chosen to mark PTSD
Awareness Day and honor his memory.
Reach out to someone you know who suffers from PTSD. Let them know
you care and are there to help. Source: https://nationaldaycalendar.com
CFISD Bond Referendum passes with
majority voter support
Registered voters in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District
approved a $1.762 billion bond referendum on May 4, 2019. The school
district drew a majority vote from the community, with the uncanvassed
count at 9,848 votes cast FOR and 4,144 votes cast AGAINST the
referendum. The approval rating for the bond referendum was 70.38
percent. Early voting accounted for 7,848 votes or 56.09 percent, of the
total votes cast. The referendum is for:
• safety and security enhancements to all campuses;
• transportation, including a new northwest center and additional buses
to accommodate student growth;
• new facilities to accommodate student growth;
• technology upgrades to district infrastructure and classroom
technology and
• renovations and additions to protect the district’s instructional and
support facilities.
“Cypress-Fairbanks community members continue to be vocal in supporting
public education for their children and today, they spoke at the polls,” said Dr.
Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “I want to give a heartfelt thank you
to the long-range planning committee that spent dozens of hours planning
for the district’s future and district staff and community members who led
and facilitated public bond presentations. Our community’s commitment
to a quality public education was evident with the approval of this bond,
which will impact all CFISD students for years to come.” The maximum
potential increase on the Interest and Sinking (I&S) Tax rate or debt service
tax rate resulting from the passage of the bond referendum is projected to be
$0.03 over a seven-year period. This equates to $40.50 per year for a home
valued at $200,000. There will be no tax increase for individuals who are 65
years of age or older or who are disabled and who qualify for an over-65
homestead exemption according to Texas Property Tax Code Section 11.26.
The committee presented its recommendation for a $1,762,000,000 bond
package to the Board of Trustees in February and the Board unanimously
called for a bond election during a regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 11 th .
JUNE IS NATIONAL
CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your gear
and experience nature. Whether you like roughing it or prefer to have a
few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s important to
keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter,
chocolate bars and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled in a
cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more
modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These
often include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and
cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups
designed for tent usage. Other parks only allow primitive camping and
require everything you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously
consider your needs if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These
are not for the glampers.
dance class on Tuesday’s from 2-2:50 PM weekly for those who may want a
little extra time! On week 1, we learn It’s A Small World After All! On week 2,
we are getting ready for some Monster Mayhem! Week 3 is for all our little
STEM-tastic learners as we head into Wreck It/Race It week. Week 4 we will
butter and evaporated milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil
incorporated and melted. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth;
spread in prepared pan. Let cool before cutting into squares.
Oven Roasted Asparagus
INGREDIENTS:
1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Garden Tips For June
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place the asparagus
into a mixing bowl and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss to coat the spears,
then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and pepper. Arrange the
asparagus onto a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the preheated
oven until just tender, 12 to 15 minutes depending on thickness. Sprinkle
with lemon juice just before serving.
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton,
Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks,
Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the
rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant
sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with
oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of
material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve
water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the
drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation
water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly,
a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
