2017 - 2018 Annual Report
Introduction
The objective in 2018 was to build on the successes of the 2013
– 2017 strategic period. Working with the Southern Premier
League, the Hampshire Cricket League, district associations,
clubs and schools, we set out to continue our work to introduce
new people to the game, through initiatives such as W10 and our
schools programme. This was in addition to attempting to stem
the flow of people leaving the game by engaging with players and
offering new formats.
Together with Hampshire Cricket Board’s (HCB) 2018 highlights
video, this report provides a snapshot of the activities delivered
and the impact of the work undertaken by countless volunteers
across the county.
Our Vision and Mission
Foreword
The presentation of this Report
allows for a brief pause in all
the hard work that is carried
out, largely by volunteers,
to grow and improve the
recreational game. It offers
an opportunity to reflect on
achievements which are
many, and to learn from
disappointments of which
there are a few. There is also
now a window to view, in high
level terms, the priorities
for future development and
associated funding set out in
the ECB Strategy for 2020-24
‘Inspiring Generations’.
What has gone well and clearly progressed?
• All Stars Cricket
• Cricket for women and girls
• Cricket for those with a disability
• Use of Play-Cricket and digital resources
• Safeguarding
• Development of umpires and scorers
Where there may be more to do?
• Adult cricket – building on the changes already made by
the Hampshire Cricket League
• Casual cricket
• Cricket in schools – extending further the reach of Chance to Shine
• Under 19 T20 – excellent but not growing further
The detail will be found on the following pages. Members, affiliated
clubs and organisations will recognise their contribution by theme
if not always by name! To you all, and to members of the Board’s
development team – thank you, and plan for an exciting five years
ahead.
Working with primary schools to inspire the next generation to
play cricket continued to be a focus in 2018. HCB expanded its
Schools Cricket Activators team to seven, which enabled the
Chance to Shine programme to reach 205 schools (nearly 40% of
primary schools in Hampshire).
Watching him during the coaching sessions I saw a whole different side to him. He
a resounding success in Hampshire. Whilst there were many, a
particular highlight was the ‘money can’t buy experience’ at the
Ageas Bowl, which saw 1,500 All Stars and parents participate in
an on-pitch parade during the interval of Hampshire’s Vitality T20
Making Cricket Accessible
The development of women and girls cricket provides the biggest
opportunity to grow the game and with ECB’s ambition to make
‘cricket a gender-neutral sport’ significant resources will be
dedicated to achieving this over the coming years.
As a result of a lot of hard work by club volunteers’ women and
girls’ cricket in Hampshire is already established in many clubs.
Whether that is girls playing in open or girls only teams, women’s
softball cricket or traditional hardball formats, more clubs are
providing an offer that is appealing to women and girls.
In 2018, 21 clubs ran girls’ sections and there were 35 women’s
softball and hardball teams participating in festival or league
competitions. 21% of children signing up to All Stars Cricket were
also girls, in line with the national average.
ECB Recommended Junior Formats
The new recommendations have
been created to help children
develop the skills that will stay with
them for life, alongside helping them
to understand the most important
part of the game: fun!
As more children are introduced to
the game through All Stars Cricket it
is imperative the pathway they feed
into meets their expectations and
continue to encourage maximum
involvement and enjoyment.
Objectives:
•To provide kids with a world class experience of cricket
and one that more closely replicates the professional
game.
• Increase junior player retention and ensure sustainable
participation
• Better develop the skills of the game that are needed
for long term performance
• Provide uniform pitch lengths for all junior cricket
At the end of 2018, HCB and district associations presented
the recommendations to clubs with the view to adopting them
for 2019. Whilst a number of changes have been implemented
there is still work to be done in some areas.
For more information visit the junior formats section of
www.ecb.co.uk
ECB Insight:
Female cricket usually operates in a culture defined by, and set up for, men.
Many women’s and girls’ sections are reactive and ad hoc, not planned.
To help clubs take advantage of the growing
appetite amongst women and girls, HCB will
provide dedicated support to small networks of
geographically linked clubs as part of the ECB’s
new Cluster Club Programme. This will include
specialised support in relation to facilities, playing
and coaching, governance and workforce.
Disability - Lord’s Taverners Super 1s
With 30,000 children in Hampshire living with a
disability, providing opportunities for people with special
educational needs and disabilities to participate in cricket
has been a long-standing priority in Hampshire. In 2018
HCB secured funding to deliver the Lord’s Taverners
Super 1s programme. Super 1s provides young people
with disabilities the opportunity to regularly participate in
cricket in a community environment all year round.
As a result of Super 1s, HCB have increased attendance
at its 4 existing hubs (Basingstoke, Winchester, New
Forest and Southampton) and established 2 additional
hubs in Porchester and Totton.
David is always delighted to attend cricket sessions as he trusts and feels trusted by those
around him. David no longer ‘freezes’ which used to be his escape mechanism of choice. He is
much more likely to approach a problem with a view of solving it and not running away’
Where we are going
What’s Next
With one of the biggest summers of cricket fast approaching, there is much to be excited about. The
Cricket World Cup (CWC) followed by an Ashes series provides a unique opportunity to inspire people
to get involved in cricket. Many clubs in Hampshire have taken advantage of the CWC club fund
and are in the process of organising their CWC family day (7 – 9 June), which will be an excellent
showcase within local communities.
As well as engaging new people, the focus also remains on retaining core players, by getting the
‘Getting the Game on’ in a format that players want.
Off the field, our immediate priority, together with key stakeholders, is to formulate a plan to deliver
the ECB’s 2020 – 2024 strategy – ‘Inspiring Generations’. Consulting the Hampshire cricket network
as widely as possible will be an integral part of the process.
