BEST OF 3 NEWPORT
Oceanview Senior Living, a retirement community<br />
Among the highest factors leading to<br />
quality <strong>of</strong> life for the elderly, staying<br />
active and involved in a community are<br />
near the top <strong>of</strong> the list. They are only<br />
two <strong>of</strong> the good reasons why someone<br />
entering their later years would want to<br />
take a close look at Oceanview Senior<br />
Living in <strong>Newport</strong>.<br />
Leading a tour <strong>of</strong> the retirement community’s<br />
dining and common areas and<br />
finally one <strong>of</strong> the 70 apartments, community<br />
relations director Sonia Graham<br />
shows where residents get their blood<br />
moving to chair exercises and other<br />
movement sciences five days a week.<br />
A hallway at the center is lined with<br />
painting created by residents. Art<br />
classes, wii bowling, lectures and word<br />
games are just a few <strong>of</strong> the ways residents<br />
engage intellectually, bond over<br />
common endeavors and keep moving.<br />
Outside the center, a garden allows<br />
seniors to get their hands in the soil<br />
and learn from an overseeing master<br />
gardener.<br />
It’s a major draw for older generations,<br />
many <strong>of</strong> whom had gardening as a way<br />
<strong>of</strong> life.<br />
“We have all kinds <strong>of</strong> standing beds so<br />
residents don’t have to get down on<br />
their knees to plant,” explained Graham.<br />
“One resident said that this was<br />
the reason they moved here. That, and<br />
we take our residents fishing. They love<br />
that.”<br />
On shopping day, our seniors are catching<br />
the bus out front to shop at Fred<br />
Meyer.<br />
“Everyone seems so happy here,” Graham<br />
said. “When I show someone<br />
around, residents will stop them in the<br />
hallway and tell them how much they<br />
enjoy being here.”<br />
Besides the garden for the green<br />
thumbs, much <strong>of</strong> the appeal <strong>of</strong> Oceanview<br />
centers around socialization.<br />
“When people lose the ability to drive,<br />
they get very socially isolated,” Graham<br />
said. “Here they have three meals a<br />
day included in their rent, and people<br />
their own age. For families, it’s peace <strong>of</strong><br />
mind.”<br />
All <strong>of</strong> the units are equipped with call<br />
buttons both at bedside and in the<br />
bathroom. Seniors also wear call button<br />
pendants. Roll-in showers are equipped<br />
with grab bars.<br />
“If someone falls, we’re going to be<br />
there immediately,” Graham said.<br />
Out front, a comfortable lounge serves<br />
as a gathering place for games, talks<br />
or just a place to socialize while housekeeping<br />
tidies up a room. Residents<br />
bring their own furniture, but a microwave<br />
and refrigerator are provided,<br />
and one unit is available for short-term<br />
stays. The center also has one cottage<br />
for more independent living, with two<br />
bedrooms and a single meal a day<br />
available.<br />
Medication management is a key <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
at Oceanview, where a staff <strong>of</strong> 35<br />
includes medication technicians, two<br />
nurses, resident assistants, a resident<br />
services coordinator and management<br />
team.<br />
While Oceanview does not conduct hospice,<br />
it will work with a hospice agency<br />
to arrange in-home care.<br />
“When our seniors come in, it is their<br />
home and they really don’t want to have<br />
to leave again, and here they don’t,”<br />
Graham said.<br />
The retirement community broke<br />
ground in 1994 and opened in 1996,<br />
built by Andrew Platt as a place for his<br />
aunt and uncle to live. He still owns the<br />
facility.<br />

“Our total community impact dollars<br />
were $221,409 in 2018.”<br />
That translated to help for 217 organizations<br />
and work by 192 volunteers.<br />

Lincoln and Clatsop counties,<br />
the three counties the credit union originally<br />
served. On the central coast, TLC<br />
currently serves nearly 1,500 members<br />
in <strong>Newport</strong> and over 6,000 members in<br />
Lincoln County overall.<br />
Longview, Wash-based Fibre Federal<br />
Credit Union acquired TLC Federal Credit<br />
Union in 2015, and currently operates<br />
branches under the TLC brand in Astoria,<br />
Seaside, Tillamook, Lincoln City, and<br />
<strong>Newport</strong>. A sixth TLC branch will be built<br />

Patricia Patrick-Joling and her daughter,<br />
Loren Patrick, have seen a lot in the<br />

said Patricia. “Residential, commercial,<br />
industrial — we’ve done everything.”<br />
While Patricia has done a little <strong>of</strong> everything,<br />
selling apartment complexes is<br />
her forte, she said.<br />
“I’m not going to give you a number,”<br />
she said, laughing. “It’s a lot.”<br />
The company is small, with one <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
employee, two agents and the mother-daughter<br />
duo. With so few employees<br />
under the company’s umbrella,<br />
the pair say they’re constantly busy.<br />

Challenges associated with the coastal<br />
weather here <strong>of</strong>ten keep them on their<br />
toes, but the benefits <strong>of</strong> working on this<br />
stretch <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> coast beats almost<br />
anywhere else, Patricia said.<br />
“I’ve traveled all over the United States<br />
and the world, and this is paradise,”<br />
Patricia said. “It is beautiful. On a clear<br />
day, nothing beats <strong>Newport</strong>. That ocean<br />
is just so beautiful.” There’s a sense <strong>of</strong><br />
community here, she added.<br />
“You lose that in bigger cities,” she said.<br />
Dolphin Real Estate is a family-owned<br />
company, and Loren said it’s uncommon<br />
to see a lot <strong>of</strong> other real estate<br />
<strong>of</strong>fices like that. The company started<br />
with Patricia’s mother, Lillie, in 1976 or<br />
1977, by Patricia’s estimate, and started<br />
out in Waldport before the <strong>of</strong>fices were<br />
moved to <strong>Newport</strong>. Patricia joined her<br />
mother at the company in the 1980s.<br />

While there are some real estate companies<br />
besides Dolphin Real Estate that<br />
are family-owned in the area, she said,<br />
there aren’t a lot that are third-generation.<br />
“The other thing is, this is not a chain,”<br />
said Patricia. “This is a company we’ve<br />
built over time and we’re very proud <strong>of</strong><br />
it. With every business, there’s pros and<br />
cons, but we’ve prided ourselves <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
property to people that’s good.”<br />
Patricia’s favorite thing about her job<br />
is working with first-time homebuyers,<br />
she said. Buying a first home is a big<br />
decision, and she wants to help folks in<br />
that situation go through the process.<br />
“I just want to make sure they do it correctly,”<br />
she said. “All my years in this<br />
business — property management, construction<br />
— has made me a more valuable<br />
tool to them.”<br />
The duo doesn’t just get first-time<br />
homebuyers and renters, however. They<br />
both attest to getting a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />
clients with a great diversity in real estate<br />
needs.<br />
“We really do get all walks <strong>of</strong> life,” said<br />
Loren. “That’s the benefit <strong>of</strong> having a<br />
company like this. We do real estate<br />
sales, but we do a lot that’s focused on<br />
property management, so we see everything.”<br />
