In his eight seasons as head wrestling coach, Nathan Shearer has 

brought W&L from the bottom of the Centennial Conference to a second 

place finish in 2019, W&L’s best ever performance in the Conference 

tournament. Nathan has coached 5 qualifiers to the NCAA 

tournament, 3 regional champions and 24 place-winners at the Centennial 

Conference Championships. The Generals 12-4 dual meet 

record in 2019 ranks them 2nd in dual meet wins in W&L history.

seen dramatic improvement in the W&L wrestling program. The Genreals 

finished runner-up in the Centennial Conference in 2019, following a 

12-4 dual meet record (4-1 in CC). In addition, 7 wrestlers placed in both 

the Centennial Conference Championships and the NCAA Southeast Regional, 

where Alex was recognized as the assistant coach of the year. 

Shearer came to Washington and Lee from Heidelberg University, 

where he served as the head coach during the 2010- 

11 season and was named the NWCA Rookie Coach of the Year 

A 2005 graduate of Ohio Northern with a bachelor of arts in social studies, 

Shearer served as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 2005- 

08. 

A four-year letterwinner in wrestling at Davidson College, he became 

the first Southern Conference Champion for the Wildcats 

in 41 years when he won the 133 lb. weight class in 2010. He finished 

his collegiate career with 68 wins. He earned a bachelor’s degree 

in political science in 2011 and a master of arts in Slavic and 

East European studies from The Ohio State University in 2013. 

The Generals have also excelled in the classroom, finishing in the 

top 30 in team GPA among D3 wrestling teams 4 times, including 

3 times in the top 15. 19 wrestlers have been named NWCA Academic 

All-Americans under coach Shearer, including 5 in 2019. 

Nathan has coached two wrestlers to become the winningest wrestlers 

in W&L history: Ron Tassoni ‘16 finished his career with 

97 wins and was also voted the Pres Brown Most Valuable Senior 

Male Athlete at W&L, the first time a stand alone wrestler has 

ever received the award. Three years later, in 2019, Zach Bylyk- 

As an undergraduate, Shearer was a four-year letterwinner for the ONU 

wrestling team, helping the Polar Bears to the 2002 OAC Regular Season 

Championship . He earned an appearance in the NCAA Division III 

Championship and finished his career ranked 11th all-time at ONU with 

an 89-44 overall record. 

The Generals have also excelled in the classroom, finishing in the top 

30 in team GPA among D3 wrestling teams 4 times (7th in 2016, 26th in 

2017, 5th in 2018, 13th in 2019). 13 wrestlers have been named NWCA 

Academic All-Americans in the last four years, including 5 in 2019. 

Zach Bylykbashi became the winningest wrestler in W&L history, 

earning 100 wins during coach Radsky’s tenure. 

Shearer and his wife Jana, a general counsel at W&L, reside in Lexington 

with their daughter Nala and sons Knox and Nash.

SENIOR, 141 LBS 

Southington HS, Southington, CT 

CAREER OVERVIEW 

Zach will graduate as the winningest wrestler in Washington and Lee history. His 100th win earned him a fifth 

place at the 2019 Southeast Regional Tournament, making him a 4x regional placer (6th, 3rd, 1st, 5th). Zach 

qualified for the NCAA Championships two times, as a sophomore and as a junior, competing in La Crosse, WI 

and Cleveland, OH. Zach was also a 3x Centennial Conference Tournament Finalist and 4x placer. 

He holds numerous W&L records: single season (34) and career (100) wins, single season (96) and career (278) 

takedowns, single season (32) and career (54) 4 point near fall counts. 


Won 12 matches during an injury-shortened season, placing 5th at the NCAA Southeast Region and 4th in the 

Centennial Conference Championships. Zach also earned Academic All-American honors for the first time in his 

career. 

2017-2018 

28-10 on the year and 6-1 in the Centennial Conference, Zach had another great season that he capped off by 

winning the NCAA Southeast Regional and advancing to the national tournament. Zach’s performance at the 

Southeast Region earned him Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the tournament. He was also a finalist at the 

Centennial Conference Championships and Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational. 

2016-2017 

Placed 3rd at the NCAA East Region to qualify for the NCAA Championship for the first time in his career, 

where he won 2 matches. Finished the season with a 26-6 record and was named to the 1st team VaSID All-State 

team. Zach finished 2nd in the Centennial Conference Championships, 1st at ONU, and 2nd at the W&J Invite. 

2015-2016 

Logged a 34-10 record at 133 pounds during his rookie campaign, setting a new program record for wins (34) 

and takedowns (96) in a season. Zach placed at every tournamnet that he competed in, including 2nd at the Centennial 

Conference Championships & 6th at the NCAA East Region. Awarded the Gary Franke Takedown Award 

and the D.C. Montgomery Memorial First Year Wrestling Trophy and named to the VaSID 2nd Team All-State.

Lettered in wrestling, football and baseball at Southington High School, helping to lead the football team to a 

state championship. He was a three-time state placewinner and a two-time State Open Runner-Up. Also a 3x 

Member of the CT Freestyle and Greco National Team and 2x Wrestling Academic All-American. 

PERSONAL 

Zach is the son of Robert Bylykbashi and Jill Wagner. He has a brother, Shaun Wagner, who wrestles at Ohio 

Northern University. Zach graduates with a Bachelor of Science, having completed a double major in Business 

Administration and International Politics. He will begin working this summer at Egidio Assante Wealth Management 

in Connecticut.

CAREER OVERVIEW 

Ethan was a four year starter at 125 lbs. He improved tremendously over the course of his career and as a 

senior, placed in every tournament that he competed in, culminating in a 7th place finish at the NCAA Southeast 

Regional. He was also a 2x Centennial Conference Placer (3rd in 2019, 4th in 2017) and 3x Jim Crytzer 

Memorial Invite placer. 

Ethan earned W&L Scholar-Athlete Awards every semester and capped off his career with Academic All-American 

honors for the first time. He was honored with the Wink Glasgow Spirit and Sportsmanship Award at the 

Washington and Lee Athletics Award Cermeony, given since 1959 to the W&L senior who has demonstrated the 

highest qualities of true W&L spirit and sportsmanship. 


Ethan capped off his career with his best season- winning 19 matches (6 falls), placing at every single tournament, 

and capping off his career with a 7th place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional. He went 5-0 in 

Centennial Conference duals and finished 3rd at the Centennial Championships. His 59 takedowns were the 

2nd most on the team. Ethan was honored as a NWCA Scholar All-American for the first time in his career. 


Ethan had a breakout season with 17 wins and 5 falls. Placed 5th at the Star City Open and 3rd at the Jim 

Crytzer Memorial Invitational. Finished in the top 8 at the NCAA Southeast Regional. A W&L Scholar Athlete. 

2016-2017 

Won 7 matches, including 2 conference duals and finished 4th in the Centennial Conference Championships. He 

was named a W&L Scholar Athlete in Fall ‘16 and Winter ‘17. 

2015-2016 

Ethan wrestled in 35 varsity matches during his first season as a W&L General. He placed 5th at the Jim Crytzer 

Memorial Wrestling tournament and was the recipient of the Carlton Peebles Memorial Wrestling Award. He 

was named a W&L Scholar Athlete in Fall ‘16 and Winter ‘17. 

BEFORE W&L 

Ethan earned four varsity wrestling letters and a varsity letter in soccer. Ethan was recognized as a U.S. Army 

Reserves National Scholar Athlete and was a three time Scholar Athlete Award winner at River Dell. Ethan 

earned Second Team All-Division honors as a senior. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Brian and Stephanie Hartman. Ethan has a sister, Jaime. Ethan graduates Magna Cum Laude with 

a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and has been accepted into the Chemistry PhD program at the University of 

Wisconsin.

JUNIORS 

Class of 2020 


Shane moved up to 165 lbs and again placed 4th at the NCAA Southeast Regional. He won 15 matches 

during the season and led the team as a Centennial Conference tournament finalist. 


Shane improved on last year’s results, placing 4th at the NCAA Southeast Regional, narrowly missing 

out on a bid to the National Tournament. He also took 4th at the Centennial Conference Championships. 

Finished 18-9 (5-1 centennial conference duals) on the season and was named a NWCA Academic 

All-American for the second straight season. 

2016-2017 

Shane had a breakout freshman campaign, finishing the season 2nd on the team with 24 wins. He took 4th 

in the Centennial Conference Championships and placed at ONU (4th), W&J (5th), and at the Jim Crytzer 

(2nd). Shane finished the season as the team leader in takedowns (65) and was awarded the Gary Franke 

Takedown Award. He was also named an NWCA Academic All-American. 

BEFORE W&L 

Shane earned four varsity wrestling letters and two in football at South Carroll High School. A 2 year 

captain, he helped lead the wrestling team to three state championships, taking 4th individually as a 

junior and winning a MD individual state championship as a senior with an undefeated 54-0 record. 


Led the Generals at the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament, capturing the 

184 lb title and earning his first berth to the National Championships. Rexx also 

finished in 3rd at the Centennial Conference Championships and won 18 matches 

during the season. Earned his first NWCA All-Academic team honor. 


Rexx won 10 out of his 13 matches and finished 2nd in the Centennial Conference 

after returning to competition from injury at the end of the season. Also earned 

a 5th place finish at the NCAA Southeast Region and was named a member of the 

Centennial Conference All-Academic Team. 

2016-2017 

Rexx had a tremendous freshman year, stepping in at 184 lbs and placing 4th at 

W&J and 3rd at ONU before an injury sidelined him for most of the rest of the year. 

He came back to wrestle at the Centennial Conference and NCAA East Region, 

where he was a match from placing. He was awarded the Carlton Peebles Memorial 

Wrestling Award at the conclusion of the season. 

BEFORE W&L 

Two time Georgia AAA state individual champion and part of a team that made it 

to the state dual semi-finals during his junior season. Also a 3x Section and Area 

Champion and an AAU All-American. 

PERSONAL 

The son of TJ and Inessa Hallyburton. Rexx is majoring in Business Administration 

and is pursuing a minor in Russian. 


PERSONAL 

The son of Tim and Audrey Conners. Shane is an Accounting major. 

SHANE CONNERS 

Colby made significant progress this season, earning a winning record for the 

first time ( 7-6), wrestling primarily at 174 and 165. 


Competed in 17 matches during his sophomore season while moving up to 165 lbs. 

2015-2016 

Colby competed in 13 matches, including a 1-2 record in dual meets during his first 

year as a General. 

BEFORE W&L 

As a senior, Colby finished 6th at the New England Prep Championships and qualified 

for the Prep National Championships. He earned 4 varsity letters in wrestling 

and 2 in football. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Dane Boudreau and Kathleen Coe. Colby has a brother, Derek, and sisters, 

Paige & Ashley. Colby is majoing in Business Administration.

Alec stepped into the starting line-up at 165 lbs and won 20 matches in his sophomore 

season. He placed 5th at the Star City Open and the Jim Crytzer Memorial 

Invite and took 7th at ONU. 

SOPHOMORES 

THE CLASS OF 2021 

2016-2017 

Alec competed in 21 matches, including 10 dual meets during his first year as a 

General. He finished the season with eight wins and placed 5th at the Jim Crytzer 

Invite. 

BEFORE W&L 

Alec was a PIAA State Qualifier and posted at 39-13 as a senior. He was selected Second 

Team All-Chester County and Honorable Mention All-Area. He finished with 

a 96-50 career varsity record. 

PERSONAL 

Alec is the son of David and Nancy Horne. His younger brother, Brett, also wrestled 

in high school. Alec is studying Economics. 

ALEC HORNE

Andrew moved up to 174 lbs and wrestled to a winning record, finishing with a 12-10 record. 

Finalist at the Star City Open and finished in 5th place at the Futures Mideast Tournament. 


Andrew showed marked improvement in his second year, winning 8 matches and finishing 

with an even 8-8 record. Reached the finals at the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invite. 

2015-2016 

Andrew competed in 16 matches, including a 2-4 record in dual meets during his first season. 

BEFORE W&L 

Andrew was a State Qualifier and team captain for the Westminster School in Atlanta, GA. He 

also earned 4 varsity letters in Cross Country and 2 in Track. 

PERSONAL 

Andrew is the son of Patrick and Margaret Taylor. Andrew has two brothers, Daniel & Michael, 

and two sisters, Margot and Katherine. Andrew is majoring in Physics-Engineering. 


Earned 18 pins, re-setting his single season pin record. 28-14 season record. Placed 

6th at the Southeast Regional and 4th in the Centennial Conference. Won the Jim 

Crytzer Tournament and placed at W&J (3rd), Star City (2nd), and ONU (4th). 

Recognized as a NWCA Academic All-American. 


In his first season Bryce broke the W&L record for falls in a season- he won 13 

of his 17 matches by fall. Bryce won his first college tournament, the Jim Crytzer 

Memorial Invite. He also was a Centennial Conference finalist and placed 6th at 

the NCAA Southeast Regional. Recognized as a NWCA Academic All-American. 

BEFORE W&L 

Bryce was a 4x State Qualifier and 3x State Placer, including a runner-up finish as 

a junior. He helped lead Camden Country High School to three consecutive state 

team championships. 

PERSONAL 

The son of David and Heather Crew, Bryce has a younger brother, Tyler, who will 

be attending and wrestling at NYU next fall. Bryce is majoring in BioChemistry 

and is on the health professions track.

in the classroom, earning W&L Scholar-Athlete Awards in both the Fall and Winter 

Semesters. 


Won 7 matches during his first season at W&L. Pat was a W&L fall Scholar Athlete, 

earning better than a 3.5 GPA in his first semester. 

BEFORE W&L 

Patrick was an county champion and a Maryland State Qualifier as a senior at 

Severna Park high school, competing at 160 lbs. He also finished 2nd in the 2016 

freestyle state tournament. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Douglas and Denise Hofstedt, Patrick is majoring in Environmental 

Studies. 


Matt missed the entire 2018-2019 season due to injury, but will return for 2019-20. 


Won 18 matches in his first season and finished with a .500 record while starting 

the whole season at 133. Matt placed at multiple tournaments, including 2nd at 

W&J, 4th at the Star City Open, and 5th at ONU.

semester with injuries and posted an 11-4 record, including 7 pins. Nick 

was the Mideast Futures tournament runner-up at 165 lbs. 


Competed in 15 matches during his second season as a General. 


Competed in 19 matches during his first year as a General. Will was a W&L fall Scholar 

Athlete, earning better than a 3.5 GPA in his first semester.

Will was a 4x letterwinner, 2x team captain, 3x State Placer, and 4x Prep League Placer 

for Woodberry Forest School. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Michael and Toni Medick, Will is from Baltimore, MD, but attended Woodberry 

Forest School in Virginia. Will is majoring in Physics.

Nick was a 4x National Prep Qualifier and became an All-American as a 

senior, placing 8th at 160 lbs. He comes from the Brooks School in MA 

where he was also a standout football player.

The son of Alexander and Sheila Konovalchik, Nick also has an older 

brother, Andrew, who attends West Virginia University. Nick is pursuing 

a degree in Geology.

Ryan immediately stepped into the starting line-up at 157 lbs and 

was 20-1 on the season before missing most of the second semester 

with an injury. He came back for the regional tournament and 

placed 8th, finishing 23-3 in his first season. 

BEFORE W&L 

Ryan was a 2x New England Champion and a 2x Connectincut 

State Open Champion. He was also a 3x All-American at NHSCA 

Nationals (5th as a junior and Senior). 

PERSONAL 

The son of Noel and Mary Luth. Ryan has two older brothers. 

He is currenlty undecided about his major. His interests include 

making music. 


Charlie started at 133 lbs and led the team with 28 wins and 63 takedowns 

during his first season. He battled injuries at the end of the season, finishing 

8th at the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. 

BEFORE W&L 

Charlie was a 2x NJ state qualfier and was ranked as high as 8th in the state 

at 132 lbs. Charlie also played soccer in high school. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Julie and Charlie Cunningham. Charlie has a younger brother, 

Aidan, who wrestles at Seton Hall Prep. He is currently undeclared about 

his major.

Brad started at 197 lbs, posting a 14-9 record (3-2 CC duals) during his first 

season. He won the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invite and placed 4th at the Centennial 

Conference Championships.

As a senior was a National Prep Placer (5th) and New England Prep champion. 

Also was a 3x National Prep Qualifier and a 2x New England Prep Runner-Up. 

Also played football in high school, earning 3 letters and winning a 

conference title in football. 

PERSONAL 

The son of Karen Basham. Brad plans to pursue a degree in Business. 


Won 15 matches, including 6 pins, during his first season, starting the 

entire season at heavyweight. Finished 4th at the Centennial Conference 

Championships

Clay was a 2x state placer in Virginia’s 6A classification, finishing in 2nd as a 

senior and 6th as a junior. Also earned varsity letters in football and track and 

field (indoor and outdoor).

The son of Larry Chadwick. Clay is planning to pursue academic interests in 

Psychology and Education.

Four year letterwinner and part of a team that took 2nd in the PA state 

championships. Russ was a 3x District 3 qualifier and placed at the Northeast

Joseph is on the Health Professions track and plans to go to medical school

Won 17 matches at both 149 and 157. Every single one of his 17 wins came 

by fall. He is 2nd on the W&L record board for pins in a season, 1 behind 

teammate Bryce Crew. Placed 3rd at the Centennial Conference Championships, 

and also 3rd at the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invite.
