This nine-year-old learnt how to

save using an app. Here’s how...

Janice Hancock lives just North of Glasgow with her husband and two

children. Always on the lookout for new skills to teach her children, Janice has

just started using Gimi, a pocket money tracker and chores manager to help

her nine-year-old son learn how to manage money.

“My son, Thomas, was reading The Week Junior and spotted the Gimi app in

there. He asked me if we could give it a try as he liked the idea of being able

to track his pocket money and save towards things he wanted to buy.”

Happy to test Gimi out, Janice downloaded the app and started giving

Thomas a £1 allowance per week. Soon, Janice noticed that instead of

spending his money straightaway, Thomas was logging items he wanted to

purchase and saving his pocket money towards them.

“Before Gimi, Thomas had a physical piggy bank and as soon as he received

cash, he would spend it. He didn’t think about savings, he would just see

things and say “I want that”. Gimi has changed this and taught him the

benefits of saving.” Gimi hasn’t just helped Janice’s son, it has also acted as a

great prompt for her and her husband.

“The app is great for parents too it sends useful reminders to ensure you

don’t forget to hand out the kids pocket money each week.”

Thomas’ saving shows no signs of slowing down as he currently continues to

work towards being able to buy some new equipment for his Nintendo games

console!

what’s on where

Inspire them to read and write with...

Cressida Cowell

Cressida Cowell is one of the UK’s most

beloved children’s authors. She has brought

us the fantastic novel series How to Train

Your Dragon, which has subsequently

become an award-winning DreamWorks

film franchise, and now joins Primary Times

to discuss her latest magical series The

Wizards of Once and her Free-Writing

Fridays Campaign.

After the success of How to Train Your

Dragon, Cressida Cowell launched her

newest book series Wizards of Once in

2017, with its sequel ‘Twice Magic’ arriving in

paperback June ’19. Cressida explains that

the books are set at the end of the Bronze

Ages, and at the beginning of a new age. “It’s

a world in which magic really exists. There

are two tribes and they are fighting each

other. The two children, the girl hero and

the boy hero, have been brought up to hate

each other, and it’s about what happens

when these children meet.”

With a passion for literature, Cressida Cowell

is a huge advocate of children reading and

writing for pleasure from a young age.

“I can’t imagine life without books. I get

all my knowledge about history, about

human nature, about the world around

me from literature.”

To help parents encourage their children to

read at home, Cressida has shared some

of her own top tips. “Go for what they’re

interested in, if they love animals go for

books on animals. Boys often like fact books,

for example I put lots of made up fact pages

in my Dragons and Wizards books.”

“Read aloud to your kids for 10 minutes

every day. Even if you are doing the reading,

you’re sending this message that books are

something fun – and that’s so important.”

“Try as hard as you can not to make learning

to read a struggle. In the end, I didn’t listen

to my children reading at the end of the

school day when they were 4 years old. They

were exhausted, so I would try and do it over

breakfast when they’re a bit perkier. Really

try and stay calm and patient –make it joyful.

It’s all about the joy of reading and writing.

It’s the children who enjoy reading and

writing in the end – it’s the best education.”

Cressida’s newest innovation to inspire

children’s imagination and creativity is her

Free-Writing Friday campaign, which is 15

minutes every Friday for a child to have a

book in which they can write whatever they

want, and the teacher doesn’t mark it. “In

this book just for 15 minutes, nothing matters

apart from the kid having fun. They can write

a story, they can design a game, and it’s

about focusing on the joy of writing.”

To find out more about Free Writing Fridays,

Primary Times guide to…

Gardening with children

Gardening comes naturally to children. Endlessly curious, children are often delighted to learn first hand

where the food on their plate comes from and how big plants grow from tiny seeds. Allowing them to get

outdoors and get their hands dirty has incredible benefits, and there is no better time to start exploring than

National Children’s Gardening Week 2019, which runs from 25th May – 2nd June. To help spark your children’s

enthusiasm, we have outlined our five favourite activities to get the kids gardening.

Start

with Seeds

A great way to introduce your children

to gardening is simply by planting a

packet of seeds on your windowsill.

Use an eggbox as your tray and fill

each compartment with potting mix

and seeds of your choice. Children

aren’t always blessed with patience,

so produce like radishes, lettuce,

basil and salad cress will all grow very

quickly and begin to show results

within just a few days.

Build a

Bee B&B

Begin by cutting the top off a large

plastic bottle with scissors (ensure you

do this for your children). Gather some

bamboo sticks and pack them tightly

into your plastic bottle. Using different

widths of bamboo is best, as the bees

can choose between the different

sizes. Attach a hook to the back of your

bee house, place in full sun at least

one metre off the ground, and

simply watch and wait!

Make a

Fairy Garden

Fairy gardens are an easy gardening

activity for kids that will make their

imagination run wild. Fill a wooden box,

planter or trough with soil and choose a

few different plants for the fairies to play

around in. Some of our favourites for May

and June include pansies, geraniums and

hyacinths. Once this is done, encourage

your children to choose a variety of

mini props and accessories including

marbles, pebbles, twigs, and of

course, the fairies themselves.

Create

a Pinecone

Bird Feeder

Attract different bird species into your

garden by combining mixed seeds, lard,

cheese and raisins in a mixing bowl. Tie a

string to a pinecone and cover it with your

sticky mix, ensuring you fill all the holes.

Pop in the fridge until set and hang from

the different branches in your garden.

Hanging some near a window can

be a great way to get a close-up

view of your flying friends.

Grow a

Hanging

Harvest

Not everyone has space for a full

vegetable patch in their garden, so the

humble hanging basket can be a great

way to save space, but still pack in the

produce. Encourage your children to

get their hands messy and fill a lined

basket with compost. Put your chosen

plants into the compost, and ensure

the kids check the basket every

day and water regularly.

Scottish Ballet

Wee Hansel & Gretel

After a pilot run in November 2018, this year Scottish Ballet will take its

specially adapted wee version of a big ballet, Wee Hansel & Gretel, on a

nationwide tour .

Audiences will join Hansel & Gretel as they go on an adventure deep into

the woods… Along the way they’ll meet a rather beguiling Witch and her

mysterious raven, before arriving in an enchanted gingerbread house filled

with dancing sweet treats and toys that come to life. This specially adapted

50-minute show is the perfect way for young children aged 3–8 years and

their families to discover the magic of ballet.

Originally choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director Christopher

Hampson in 2013, dancers from Scottish Ballet will perform in this wellknown

fairytale alongside talented students from the Royal

Conservatoire of Scotland’s BA in Modern Ballet.

A favourite for all the family, these performances

of Wee Hansel & Gretel will be adapted by keeping

the auditorium lighting on and slightly modifying

the content of the production. This will make for

a welcoming and relaxed production for all the

family to enjoy.

There are some very strange goings on in this selection of

stories, not to mention odd characters, some of them human.

They show what can be achieved when you set your mind on

something. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Midnight at Moonstone

Lara Flecker (Oxford, £6.99)

Never able to match the achievements

of her siblings, or expectations of her

father, Kit decides to leave it all behind

and visit her grandfather at Moonstone

Manor, a costume museum. She’s never

Debbie

met him or been there, but had a leaflet of the place where her

mother had grown up and felt she might belong there. Her long and arduous

journey ends in disappointment — her grandfather doesn’t want her and the

place is a dilapidated mess, about to be sold by the council to a sleezy character.

As night falls, Kit discovers a massive secret — all the mannequins come to life.

Once she is over the shock she gets to know them and realises she must do up

the manor to stop it being sold, not only for her grandfather, but to save the

mannequins. With only three weeks to go this is a tall order and will need all

the help she can get, but will she be able to persuade the posh mannequins who

spend their time bickering and have never had to work to help? This is a highly

entertaining read, with a variety of well rounded characters full of humour and

some touching moments with enough drama and excitement to keep readers

gripped — I couldn’t put it down. The beautiful, atmospheric illustrations add

much to the story and large print encourage readers to medium length novels.

Pog- Padraig Kenny (Chicken House, £6.99)

After their mother’s death Penny and David move to her

old family home with their dad. It is supposed to be a

fresh start, but it is an old, creeky house in the middle of

a dark forest and feels unwelcoming. Little do they know

it contains a portal to another world guarded by a small

furry, magical creature called Pog. The children get the

shock of their lives when they accidentally meet him, but

luckily he is friendly — unlike the creatures creeping through cracks in

the door of the portal, or the strange one who forms a connection with David.

He has no idea what this is or what it intends to do with him. Soon he is in

great danger, as is everyone else. Will they be able to save themselves and

protect all the goodness in the world? This is a thrilling story full of surprises

and strange creatures with an extremely likeable title character. Fair size print,

full length novel.

A meteor hits earth and breaks into pieces. One piece lands

on a pond near an egg which immediately starts to glow.

A wise-quacking duck decides to sleep on the deserted egg

and wakes to discover he has super powers. His adventures

can begin! After having fun with his new powers the egg,

which has become Yoki, developed a long moustache and

can communicate with Adventure Duck (or AD) using ESP,

tells him he should use his powers wisely and usefully. Other animals have

been affected by meteor pieces and one, Power Pug, intends to use his

powers to take over the world. Can Yoki persuade AD to become a real hero

and save the world - and is he up to it? This is a very funny story, first in a

new series, with likeable, quirky characters. It has large print and plenty of

pictures to encourage newly developing readers onto novels.

Super Sloth - Robert Starling (Anderson Hb, £12.99)

Sloth was ordinary, living an ordinary life until he read a

book someone had dropped about a superhero and decided

to become one. Hearing Toucan’s distant cry for help, Sloth

rushed to his aid. If you know anything about Sloths you will

know they move very slowly and by the time he reached

Toucan the crook, an anteater, was long gone. Having failed to

fly, Sloth was just about to give up his superhero ambitions when he overheard

all the other animals talking about their fruit being stolen and worrying about

starving. With the anteater being well guarded they didn’t see what could be

done - but Sloth could. Not fast, or able to fly, a sloth is very good at moving so

slowly they look like a bit of a tree which gave him the idea for a cunning plan.

See if it works in this laugh aloud picture book with a loveable title character.

There are expressive pictures and a few sentences on each page to encourage

new readers and interesting sloth facts at the end.
