DiBartolo’s bench title is House Stark and House Targaryen based from the book “Game of Thrones” from the series “A Song of Ice and Fire.” The inspiration of the theme was the popularity of the show. It took DiBartolo and his team of four other artist 120 hours to complete the project. His bench can be seen on the corner of Hickey Street and Oak Park Avenue. The benches will be on display downtown Tinley through October. “I just think it’s one of those things that everybody enjoys,” Carroll said. “It’s very walkable and the benches this year are wonderful. Not that they aren’t every year, but certainly this year it just really seems like we’ve had a nice group and a nice range of the theme. People really put a lot of effort into the benches this year and I think they’re wonderful.” Tinley man’s artwork receives top recognition in Lockport juried show Staff Report Tinley Park resident Robert Dietz took “Best in Show” at the Gallery Seven’s Open Lens X juried photography show, with its reception held June 2 at the Gaylord Building in Lockport. His 24x36 black and white metal print image titled “Avenue of the Giants” was selected among approximately 45 images submitted from across the nation to the Gallery Seven Jurist team. The team of nine voted on the images that came from primarily the Midwest. Dietz was the only artist from Tinley Park, according to coordinator Richard Ainsworth. About only half of the artists who submitted their work were chosen to have their work on display at the Gaylord Building. Seven artists were recognized, including first, second, third, three honorable mentions and best in show. Each artist received a cash prize and Dietz took home $150. Gallery Seven is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Dietz’s image will be on display until June 30. The Historic Gaylord Building is located at 200 W. 8th St. in Lockort. tinleyjunction.com life & arts the Tinley Junction | June 13, 2019 | 19 Mother-daughter duo set to open romance novel bookstore June 15 Jacquelyn Schlabach Editor It’s a novelty idea that has only come to fruition at two other locations in the world. Love’s Sweet Arrow, a romance novel bookstore in Tinley Park to open June 15, is set to join The Ripped Bodice in Los Angeles and Rendezvous The Romance Bookstore in Melbourne, Australia as three stores that only offer romance novels in their collection. As previously reported by The Junction in February, Marissa Backlin of Tinley Park and her mother Roseann Backlin, of Monee, launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of raising $76,000 by March 10 to cover inventory, overhead, supplies and everything else needed to open. As of that date, they had only raised $12,901, and because they didn’t reach their goal, they didn’t receive any money. “I think [the goal] was too high but boy, some of [the money] would have come in handy.” Roseann said. “I think we learned a lot from Kickstarter, though, and we definitely got our name out so we’re trying to think it was still successful because everyone knows who we are now. Through that we had authors offering to send us books.” Three months later, Marissa and Roseann decided to go a different route and receive the funds they need through a website called Patreon, which helps generate money from donors who then receive exclusive benefits for donating. For example in this case, donors can receive free signed books. As of press time, the mother-daughter duo have 24 patreons, who are either fans or authors themselves wanting to see Love’s Sweet Arrow succeed. Marissa and Roseann work in education as a special education teacher and operations manager for a school cafeteria, respectively, and said it has been a learning experience for both of them in opening up a store. “I did research a lot, we talked to other bookstores who had really good advice for us,” Roseann said. “And there are books out there on how to open a bookstore, and as I’m reading this I’m like, ‘we already did that,’ ‘Oh, OK, we already did that,’ so we were heading in the right direction.” While Roseann focused on the technicalities of opening a business, her daughter was focused on learning their inventory, reading a lot of books and deciding which ones they wanted to carry. When they open on Saturday, their collection will include 1,300 to 1,400 new books and a little more than 10 percent of their collection will be used books. They will also be selling candles, jewelry, T-shirts and buttons. “Every time we saw a used book sale or people donated books, we said we’ll take it,” Marissa said. “So we’re having more used books than planned, but we’re going to use that money to buy more new books.” The Backlins have ordered their books from distribution companies such as Ingram Content Group and Baker & Taylor, as well as from publishing houses directly. On Saturday, June 22, there is to be six authors coming to Love’s Sweet Arrow for what Marissa and Roseann call the beginning of Summer Lovin’ at Love’s Sweet Arrow, which runs through August. “It’s going to be more of mingle with the authors, rather than a traditional signing where you can go and talk to the authors, get your book signed, talk to another author, you can purchase their book and we’re trying to get mainly local authors because it’s easier for them to come out there,” Marissa said. “But we’re really excited; the authors that we’ve talked to and confirmed are really excited, as well.” As part of the Summer Lovin’ at Love’s Sweet Arrow, the mother-daughter duo hope to get around six authors once a Marissa Backlin (left) and her mother, Roseann, are the owners of Love’s Sweet Arrow, which is sent to open Saturday, June 15 downtown Tinley Park. 22nd Century Media File Photo month to come in for the mingle. There are also plans in the works for authors to have their book launch parties at the store. “And there’s some big names, too,” Roseann said. “ I don’t think people realize how many women around here are romance writers, and that you live next door to them and you don’t know what their name is maybe because they have a pename.” Marissa said that their main goal through opening Love’s Sweet Arrow is to be as inclusive as possible and sell a diverse range of books from different authors. “One of our goals was to have books that represent all people,” Marissa said. “We’re still working on developing our inventory and unfortunately some books that are more diverse are only available on ebook, so we are hoping to get an account with Kobo so that we can sell ebooks in the sense that they just have to sign up with our Kobo app and we’ll get a little cut from each e-book. But we really want this to be a welcoming, inclusive environment and we are really excited to have authors of all kinds in our store.” What has kept the new bookstore owners going is sharing their love of romance novels with women, and spreading that sense of empowerment that Marissa and Roseann feel after reading a romance story. “I’ve read all genres of books and [romance] is the most satisfying genre,” Marissa said. “In every genre there’s excellent writers but I feel like in romance, when you read a good romance [novel] there’s no sense of ‘ugh.’ You always know it’s going to end happily, if it’s a true romance. It’s going to end and you’re going to put the book down with a sense of like, I feel complete.” As part of their grand opening Love’s Sweet Arrow 17024 S.
