managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The Walled City 

2019-2020 Derry~Londonderry 

marks the 400th anniversary of the 

completion of the Derry Walls. 

Built from 1613-1619 by The Honourable, 

The Irish Society as a defence for early 

seventeenth century settlers from England 

and Scotland, The Walls are the largest 

ancient monument in Northern Ireland, 

the only remaining complete Walled City 

in Ireland and one of the finest examples 

of Walled Cities in Europe. 

The Walls, which are approximately one 

mile (1.6km) in circumference and vary 

in height and width between 3.7 and 10.7 

metres, are completely intact and form 

a walkway around the inner city. Visitors 

can walk around the top of the ramparts, 

which provides an elevated promenade to 

see how the city has developed. 

To mark this significant anniversary a full 

and vibrant programme of events has 

been developed which provides a great 

opportunity for both visitors and locals 

alike to experience the Walled City at its 

very best. 

Featuring an eclectic range of musical 

ensembles, dance audio plays, historical 

and contemporary exhibitions, 

symposiums, films, living archaeology 

demonstrations, workshops, visual arts 

exhibitions and much more! 

Part of this programme is PEACE IV 

funded by the Special EU Programmes 

Body (SEUPB), and introduces some of 

the lively characters who have helped 

shaped the city’s history. The programme 

aims to chart the progress of peace 

and the various cultures from over the 

centuries through animation and stories.

the nineteenth year of the festival which 

regularly attracts the biggest, most relevant 

international names in electronic music to

All Ireland Cycle Fest

The three day festival of racing will give 

visitors to the city an opportunity to see the

ReWire Youth Art Festival 

2nd July - 7th July 

From 26 June to 7 July, Derry and Strabane is set to be taken over in 

a huge celebration of youth culture as the first ever Rewire Festival 

sees a culmination of art forms come together to deliver the city and 

district’s first ever youth arts festival. As the flagship event for Youth 19, 

young people aged between 12 and 24 can join in on the hundreds of 

events over 12 days, from skateboarding to dancing, to music gigs, film 

screenings, discussions, fashion masterclasses to street art and catch up 

with some the UK and Ireland’s biggest Youtube stars. The central point 

to the festival will be in Guildhall Square where there will be a Big Top 

tent erected to cater for the larger events and will have a jam packed 

programme over six nights from 2nd-7th July. For details of the full

A unique blend of music, dance, drama,

poetry recitals, exhibitions, historical 

tours and debates; this impressive and 

edgy programme will celebrate the rich 

cultural heritage of our city and is sure to 

be one of the highlights of the summer. 

The distinctive, colourful and impressive 

Tartan Walk will animate the city walls, 

while the Walled City Tattoo will explore 

how and why Derry’s Walls were built 

400 years ago. Derry Girl’s star and 

comedy legend Kevin McAleer (aka 

Uncle Colm) will perform his stand up 

show Guru. Running from 22nd July until 

8th August 2019 the New Gate Fringe 

Festival offers something for everyone.

Walls 400 Exhibition

2019 marks the 400th anniversary of 

the completion of the building of Derry’s 

Walls. Constructed between 1613 and 

1619, the Walled City is the only remaining 

completely walled city in Ireland and one 

of the finest examples in Europe. 

The Tower Museum has curated an 

exhibition using a treasure trove of objects 

and archive materials from its collections 

to tell the story of the Walls, the city and 

its people. Some of the objects on display 

have never been seen before, including 

pottery, ceramics, leather and currency 

unearthed in archaeological digs in 1970s 

& 1980s. 

These objects not only tell us about life 

and events within, without and around 

the walls from the last 400 years, but also 

help us to understand how people would 

have lived day to day. It is a fascinating 

story of social history that spans war, 

rebellion, peace and culture.

Museum of Free Derry 

As part of their programme to mark key 50th anniversary events in the civil 

rights period the Musuem of Free Derry are planning a series of events to 

mark the anniversary of one of the most seminal events, the Battle of the 

Bogside in August 1969. The Free Derry Lives exhibtion will explore the many 

people who contributed to life in the Free Derry area during this time period.

to explore the stories of the personalities/ 

London Companies who built ur City Walls. 

Audiences will also experience reenactments 

of the building of the Walls by historical 

characters who will be dressed in costumes 

of that period.

The Walled City Tattoo in Concert 2019 returns with another 

spell-binding mix of top class local and international talent. 

Join the two hundred strong cast as they tell of the building of 

the city walls in the 400th anniversary of their completion in 1619! 

A spectacular visual display like no other telling the unique story 

of our walled city including the Tattoo’s well-established blend of 

cultural traditions and the high quality drama, music, dance and, of 

course, that little bit extra, join us and with others from near and far 

to celebrate one of the most unique structures on the island – the 

World Heritage site that is Derry’s Wall’s. 

Limited tickets for the matinee are currently available so book early 

to avoid disappointment.

Cave Art: Toolmaking 

& Clay Workshop 

SAT 17th AUGUST 11am - 4pm St Augustine’s Schoolhouse 

Artist Gail Mahon, will lead a workshop exploring physical and tactile 

approaches to mark making and construction techniques using clay and 

tool making activities; taking inspiration from Cave Art hand prints to small 

graffiti carving and surface marks found along the WALLS to explore time 

and identity of making a mark upon the world. Also taking in a walk to 

collect materials and examine surfaces of the stones walls of the city to make 

unique tools to replicate techniques in mark making during the workshop. 

If children attending please bring an apron or cold clothes for a dusty 

environment. (participants to bring a packed lunch)
