Do In The San Luis Valley

Top 10

1. SAND DUNES

The Great Sand Dunes National Park features the tallest

sand dunes in the United States. The dune field rising above

the San Luis Valley is framed with the blue peaks of the

Sangre de Cristo mountain range.

During the summer, park rangers organize a number of

nature walks and interpretive programs exploring the dunes’

geology, history and wildlife. For a more challenging walk,

head into the dune field itself. Whether hiking, sliding,

exploring in a dunes wheelchair — or simply playing — the

Great Sand Dunes are a unique area for all to enjoy.

The visitors center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from

Memorial Day to Labor Day. The center offers an inspiring

film presentation, interactive exhibits, bookstore, first aid

room and back porch with viewing scope.

A number of camping sites, ranging from car and RV areas

to primitive backpacking sites on and off the dune field, are

available.
