SPRING TIME IN Centerville

2019 SPRING Athletic Program

We would like to welcome all of you to the Centerville City School District where athletics serves as yet

another tool to prepare our students to excel in life when their high school experience ends. We pride

ourselves in partnering with our athletes to help them always compete with a sense of humility, embrace

and respond to adversity in an appropriate manner and continuously strive to reach excellence. We are

so appreciative of the tremendous support we receive from the Centerville Community and I want to

personally thank all of you for your continued and unwavering support.

We are proud members of the Greater Western Ohio Conference and this past school year won the

GWOC Eastern Division All-Sports trophy for the 17th consecutive year. The conference will see some

changes at the conclusion of this year but the Elks remain committed to the GWOC and will continue to be

a proud member moving forward.

We would like to remind all of those who attend our games that we all share a role in the development of

our student-athletes competing and we ask you choose to behave in a manner which reflects the positive

values we are expecting from our own student-athletes.

You can follow Centerville Athletics on twitter @chselksad. We are very proud of the excellent athletic

programs we have here in Centerville, but we are most proud of how our coaches and student-athletes

represent our school and our community.

Please consider becoming a member of the Athletic Booster Family by visiting elkboosters.com

Greetings from the

GWOC Commissioner

Hello and welcome to the 2018-19 season! The GWOC and their student-athletes are excited

to have you in attendance. Athletes, coaches, and administrators of the GWOC have worked

hard in preparation for this year’s events.

The Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) has built a distinguished history of academic

and athletic excellence over the years. The communities that makeup the GWOC have

proud histories and their ongoing support has helped establish a conference that is among

the best in the state. There is nothing like the experience of being a student-athlete, or fan, of

the Greater Western Ohio Conference. It offers students the best opportunities to compete in

an elite academic and athletic conference. It also provided a forum for fans of the GWOC to

support the best high schools, and competition, in the state.

The conference sponsors and provides recognition for athletics at the middle school and high

school levels. GWOC sponsored athletics continue to have team and individual recognition at

the local, district, regional, state, and national levels.

The conference continually promotes and encourages the concept of sportsmanship to the

fullest degree in athletic competition. Proper conduct and respect for all are actions to be

demonstrated before, during, and after all sporting events and activities. We ask that you do

your part by being a role model and positively support the game’s participants. Sportsmanship

is everyone’s responsibility.

The student-athletes, coaches, and administrators of the GOWC appreciate your continued

support and ew look forward to your return at a future contest. Please visit the conference

website at www.gwocsports.com for all conference related information and follow us on

Twitter at @GWOC. I hope you enjoy this season; and I am looking forward to your return to a

future GWOC event!

Sincerely,

Eric Spahr

Commissioner, GOWC

Centerville Athletic Boosters

Dear Elk Families,

More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools

participate in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our

community values and supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City

Schools. The benefits to students from participating in the sports programs range from being a part of

a team, being physically fit, improving skills in a game, becoming a leader in an athletic program, and

possibly earning a college scholarship as a result of the higher level of training and competition that

our district enjoys.

The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose

is to support the Centerville athletic programs. With the ever-changing funding landscape for school

districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such as ours to

generate funds to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30 years, the

Athletic Booster Club has enhanced the District’s athletic programs by providing supplemental funding

and making substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our sport facilities. We have

contributed to the improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, gymnasiums, the soccer/

lacrosse field, the baseball field, and the football field. The Centerville community must continue to

help sustain these popular athletic programs.

Please join the Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club if you have not already done so. It is easy

to join and there are a number of levels in which to participate. Visit the Booster Website at www.

elkboosters.com for membership information. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!

GO ELKS!

Elks Baseball Family,

Thank you for the support of Centerville Schools and the Elks Baseball Program. We look forward

to representing Centerville City Schools as we compete on the field and continue to build the

tradition of Centerville Elks Baseball.

Our guys have worked hard this off-season to put themselves in position to “Play Best Game Last.”

Our schedule will be one of the most challenging in the state of Ohio and arguably the Midwest.

We once again will face off with some of the top teams in Ohio (Moeller, St X, Mason, Defiance)

while also attending two Nationally known tournaments (IMG National Classic and PBR Midwest

Select). We also look for compete for the GWOC National Title with the likes of Beavercreek,

Fairmont, Springfield, and Wayne. We look forward to playing at a high level on a day to day basis

against such terrific programs.

After graduating 5 Seniors we have numerous areas to address going into the 2019 season.

However, we are fortunate to return 13 letter winners with several players that helped us win back

to back District Titles. The senior group has been a foundational class for our program and are

excited to see them compete one last time for us. The list includes #1 Kyle Moyer, #2 Sterling

Hill, #4 Connor Walch, #7 Shea Hendrixson, #8 Thomas Jenkins, #9 Nick Hoffmann, #10 Morgan

Colopy, #13 Jared Lieberman, and #18 Drew Smith. The junior class is led by returners #11 Joe

Requarth and #12 Ryan Stahl. We also have a strong group of sophomores and freshmen that

will compete to help the Varsity squad. Holding ourselves to a high standard on and off the field

while also upholding our cultural values of Family, Attitude, Skill, and Team will help determine

where this season will take us. We look forward to having you as a part of the journey.

Elk FAST,

Jason Whited

CENTERVILLE TRACK

Centerville Track Coaching Philosophy

Many coaches use sport as a vehicle to enrich the lives and the futures of their athletes. Their greatest

reward is not the outcome of winning but rather the process of training and competition that positively

affects the personal development of young athletes. It is with these thoughts in mind that I try to

be the best coach, mentor, and role model I can be for our athletes at Centerville High School.

Participation in sports provides opportunities for athletes to grow physically, mentally, and socially in

positive ways. It is my responsibility as a coach to provide the atmosphere that will enable this growth

to take place.

Competition is an important part of athletics, but it should never be requirement for a young person

to participate in a sport. I encourage all interested young people to join our program and to experience

the positive growth that can come from that participation. Our team is made up of competitors,

who will get the best training available to succeed in competitive situations, and to participants, who

will get the best training available to enjoy and grow from their sporting experience. I hope that our

participants will one day be our competitors.

I want our teams to win our meets, but I have a much broader sense of the term success. It is that

term that I work toward as your coach. When athletes and teams train hard to develop their abilities,

give their best in competition and practice and show the will to push themselves beyond their self-imposed

limits, they are successful. We will strive for this success and have fun doing it every day.

“Talent without effort is a tragedy. Your best players should be your best effort people & we work effort

every day!”

CENTERVILLE GIRLS LACROSSE

The Lady Elks are in their twelfth season as a program, posting winning seasons the past three

years. This year’s team has considerable talent and depth with ten seniors on Varsity and the

majority of the team having started in the Centerville youth or middle school program. The future

is bright for girls lacrosse at Centerville High School as we had a record turn-out at tryouts this

year and have 25 players on the JV team. Our team motto is “Respect All and Fear None” which

is evident every time this group of talented athletes take the field.

BOYS VOLLYBALL

Reflections and Goals

The Elks look to bounce back from their Runner-Up to the regional champion and compete in the Ohio High

School Boys Volleyball State Tournament in Columbus!

The 2018 Boys Volleyball Team completed the program’s Thirtieth season with a 15-12 record and a Sweet 16

finish. Five Elks were named to West Region honors-Seniors Adam Skerl to First Team, Senior Carter Holbrook

to Second Team, and Senior Mark Villers to Honorable Mention. All-State honors were also conferred

upon Adam Skerl (2nd Team).

This season promises to be another exciting one for the Elks as the team is ready to continue the strong tradition

of success. The 2019 team returns only four varsity players from last year’s squad. This year’s players

include Seniors Clay DeVilbiss, and Lawrence Corbett; Junior Nick Abuyuan, Milan Shah, Chris Sucato, Joe

Ely, and Matt Jaeger; Sophomores Ethan Stuart, Michael Johnson, Teagan Calhoun and Nate Madding; Freshman

Corey Holbrook, and Kevin Whitehead. Many of these players spent the off-season training and playing

on club teams to hone their skills. They are ready for the challenges of the 2019 season.

The Elks will again play a very aggressive schedule against many of the top ranked teams from the Dayton

area and across Ohio. On April 27th, Centerville will again host the Elite Eight Tournament at Centerville High

School. Teams in this year’s tournament include St. Xavier, Moeller, Elder, Hilliard Darby, Cleveland St. Ignatius,

Dublin Jerome, and Lakota East. All these teams will be very competitive as they make their bid to compete

in the end of season state tournament. The regular season will wind down Senior Night on May 15th against

Defending DII State Champions St. Charles. Regional post-season play commences the week of May 20th at

Middletown High School, culminating with regional finals on Saturday, May 25th.

Great things await the boys’ volleyball program this season as all the teams strive to uphold the program’s

strong tradition of excellence. The team looks forward to an exciting year as the players write their own chapter

in the history of Elks Volleyball with their sights set on the opportunity to play for the state championship.

Please come out and join the team for another season of thrilling play.

BOOSTERS

The Centerville Athletic Booster Club is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated

to supporting the athletic programs and athletes in the Centerville School System.

The Booster organization helps out where our tax dollars and school budgets fall

short. In the past decade, we have funded over $750,000 in additional athletic programming

for the young people in our middle and high schools.

Last year, alone, we raised over $216,000. All of which went directly to your students’

programs and capital improvement projects.
