Welcome

the recent British Breeders Dinner

where Futurity champions were

celebrated.

FEBRUARY ISSUE - WHAT’S INSIDE

To this very special edition of the

British Breeder magazine which

includes profiles for all the stallions

entered for the Stallion Event. This

year’s Event promises to be the biggest

to date with over 80 stallions being

presented. We are extremely grateful

to Competition Stallions and Baileys

Horse Feeds for their ongoing support.

With the uncertainty of Brexit still

looming, mare owners have no

guarantee that they will be able to

import chilled semen from Europe

without delay or restriction. Therefore

it is even more important to consider

our home-based stallions. With

international show jumpers, sires of 5

star eventers, blue-blooded dressage

horses, and proven producers of

amateur friendly mounts, there is so

much choice for every breeding

programme. I don’t think there has

ever been such a strong selection of

bloodlines to choose from on British

soil.

In this edition we also meet Shirley

Light of Brendon Stud who discusses

their show jumping breeding

programme, and meet Trakehner Grand

Prix dressage stallion Garuda K.

As ever we celebrate the wonderful

broodmares who consistently produce

talented sporthorses. This time we

focus on the Billy Stud’s Annagroff, dam

of rising star Billy Diamo. There is

studbook news and reports from the

biggest winter shows and images from

The British Breeding Futurity was

revamped in 2018 to great acclaim

with a panel of discipline specific

and international judges. The linear

profiling system used to evaluate the

young horses has been enhanced again

for 2019 and is proving to be one of

the most sophisticated systems in use

in Europe. Dates for the two weeks

of Futurity assessments are due to be

released shortly.

The Equine Bridge is also set to be

relaunched in 2019 with the three

Olympic disciplines in full support.

The best of the stock assessed at the

Futurity will be invited to participate

and the scheme will really bring

together our best riders, producers

and young horses. The production of

young horses to ensure they fulfil their

potential is a key topic for the British

Breeding group, and one that will be

developed over the next few years.

What I am most looking forward to in

2019 is being able to report on more

British bred success at every level.

2018 saw incredible results in all three

disciplines from young horse

championships all the way through to

the World Equestrian Games.

With the quality of our mare base, the

enthusiasm of our breeders and the

talent of our riders, British bred

success in sport is set to become

commonplace.

2018

IN REVIEW

2018 proved to be a very successful

year for the British breeding industry

on the international stage and this

must encourage more and more riders

to look at home when sourcing their

next competition ride.

The highlight must be the World

Equestrian Games where 50% of the

British bronze medal winning dressage

team consisted of British bred horses

– Hawtins Delicato (Diamond Hit x

Regazzoni) and Super Nova II (De Niro

x Weltmeyer) and a third, Dono Di

Maggio, is by the British owned stallion

Dimaggio.

Also British bred was the eventing

individual silver medallist Mr Chunky

(Jumbo x Sergeant Drummer), ridden

by Irishman Padraig McCarthy. There

were no medals in the show jumping

but two outstanding individual

performances came from Australian

Rowan Willis on Blue Movie (Chacco

Blue x Pilot) and Israel’s Danielle

Goldstein on Lizziemary (Cabri D’Elle

x Acord II). Lizziemary had a fabulous

season winning the CSI***** Grand Prix

at Wellington and top placings on the

Global Champions Tour.

Sticking with show jumping, our

August cover celebrated the Billy Stud

breeding a Hickstead Derby winner

when William Funnell rode Billy

Buckingham (Billy Congo x Clover Hill)

to victory. Kim Barzilay’s homebred

Kimba Flamenco ( Je T’Aime Flamenco

x Heartbreaker) was an impressive

winner of the 5 star Falsterbo Grand

Prix under Billy Twomey, and the pair

were only just touched off in CSI****

Grand Pix at Bolesworth, and won the

Grand Prix at Vejer de la Frontera.

Eventing saw two of the 4 star events

won by British bred mares, both

ridden by New Zealander Jonelle

Price. First of all was a Badminton

victory sealed by a masterclass across

country riding Classic Moet (Classic x

Bohemond). This was followed by a

win at Luhmuhlen on Trisha Rickard’s

home bred Faerie Dianimo (Dimaggio x

Catherston Dazzler).

These are just a few of the

outstanding British bred horses that hit

the headlines in 2018. 2019 looks set

to fill this magazine with many more

incredible British achievements.

RAMIRO B

The team at British Breeding were very sad to hear of the passing of

Ramiro B. One of the very best event sires ever to have stood in the

UK.

Ramiro B was diagnosed with irreversible kidney failure at the age

of 24. Ramiro B had been standing in the UK since 2011, and has

consistently been one of the most popular Eventing Sires in the World,

currently standing at number 6 on the World Breeding Federation

Eventing Sire rankings.

His progeny had their most successful year to date in 2018, with Cooley

Master Class winning the Rolex Kentucky CCI 4* with Oliver Townend,

followed by Cooley SRS achieving runner up spot at Badminton Horse

Trials also with Oliver later in the Spring.

Nina Barbour, owner of Ramiro B said:

‘Ramiro B owes us nothing. It was a real shock for us this week, when

the team at Leahurst diagnosed him with irreversible kidney failure,

following a deterioration in his appetite. He has been much loved and

I am very grateful to both the teams at Stallion AI and Bolesworth who

have looked after him beautifully to the end. We will all miss him very

much, but it is a comfort that we have frozen semen stored and will

be able to continue his legacy for some time to come.’

Ramiro B’s frozen semen will be available for 2019 from Stallions AI.

2018 OLYMPIA

International Show

El Wee Widge - Image courtesy of Olympia

Was a successful event

for British Breeders in

the FEI 5 star classes

in both dressage and

showjumping.

British breeding was dominant in the

2018 Dressage World Cup qualifier at

Olympia with no less than 4 of the top

5 born here in the UK.

The Winner - Frederic Wandres & Duke

of Britain (Dimaggio x Rubinstein) BHHS

Bred by Sarah & Tony Pidgley

2nd - Charlotte Dujardan & Hawtins

Delicato (Diamond Hit x ) BHHS Bred by

Judith Hawtins

4th - Hayley Watson-Greaves & Rubins

Nite (Rubin Royal x Limbo) BHHS bred

by E Richmond-Watson

5th - Richard Davison & Bubblingh

(Lingh x Picandt) KWPN bred by Richard

Davison.

Interestingly the rest of the line up had

2 more Rubin Royal sons, 1 Lusitano, 1

by a show jumper, a Selle Francais with

a Holstein jumping sire line, a Danish

horse with a Trakehner sire line and a

Dutch Warmblood from the important

Ferro sire line.

Duke of Britain had already won a

World Cup qualifier in 2018 at Zakrzow

and had good placings at Aachen and

Falsterbo. He was also 4th in the 6

year old young horse championships in

Verden. His sire Dimaggio is still the

most important sire of dressage horses

in the UK, consistently producing

huge numbers of horses successful at

Regional, National and International

level. The dam Real Gold proved to be

a fantastic producer for the Pidgley’s,

as she is also the dam of Beltoni (by

Belissimo M), Performance test winner,

5 year old National Champion and

small tour winner for Vicki Thompson-

Winfield. She produced a full brother

to Duke of Britain called Dinamic who

qualified for the Bundeschampionate

and is a breeding stallion in Germany.

Duke of Britain. Image courtesy of Olympia

Since being sold Real Gold has also

produced the Bundeschampion Bitcoin

OLD (by Bordeaux).

The Billy Stud had a strong showing

in the international show jumping

classes. Darragh Kenny was just pipped

to victory in the opening class on

Billy Dorito (Billy Mexico x Vechta)

and there was another 2nd place in a

1.50m class for Billy McCain (Cevin Z x

Cruising). The consistency of the stud’s

breeding programme continued on the

Thursday with Billy Angelo (Tangelo x

Kroongraaf) again taking the runner up

slot. Will Funnell rode this 15 year old

into the runner up slot once again on

Friday in the accumulator. A fourth Billy

bred horse came into the placings on

Saturday night, with Billy Diamo (Cevin

Z x Andiamo) one of only 4 clears in the

1.55m class.

The opening international class of

the show also saw a 4th placing for

the Hales’ homebred SFS Vincomte,

a Veni Vidi Vici son. Victory in the

major class on the Thursday was not

directly one for British breeding,

but indirectly as the winner was the

British breeding stallion Golden Hawk,

available through Breen Equestrian.

Shane Breen was also victorious on the

final day in the Masters with another

of his breeding stallions – the Caretino

son Clyde VA. Friday’s top class was

the Longines Christmas Cracker stakes,

and this saw the AES registered and

British bred mare El Wee Widge,

ridden by Robert Whitaker and owned

by his uncle Michael, topping a 13

strong jump off. The 9 year old gelding

was bred by Mark Evans of Castell

Sport Horses by the Dutch bred but

French influenced stallion Wheaweij de

Landetta.

The Theraplate

UK Liverpool

International

Horse Show

The Theraplate UK Liverpool International

Horse Show ran for the 4th time over the

Christmas and New Year break and once

again proved to be the perfect compromise

between top class sporting action and family

entertainment. Four star show jumping, the

biggest names in British dressage, opera

singers, motorbikes, shetlands….. and all

being live streamed across the globe.

This made Liverpool a great showcase for

British breeding and the first international

class on the opening day resulted in victory for

the British bred Simply Splendid (by Ustinov,

bred by C Robson) and Scot James Smith.

The following day the main class was won by

Harriet Nuttall on Galway Bay Lad, a son of

international competitor Romanov bred by

Justin Burke, after a 12 horse jump off had

the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Class sponsors Voltaire Design are fittingly also

Harriet’s sponsors. The pair were also runners

up in the Grand Prix, rounding off a fantastic

week for Harriet. The Grand Prix winner was

Shane Breen on the British based breeding

stallion Golden Hawk (Vigo D Arsouilles x Chin

Chin) and in third place British bred

Billy Diamo ridden by Will Funnell.

The very popular Puissance also saw British

victory for the Renwick’s Top Dollar IV, bred

by Sue Clark. The big scopey Dollar Du Murier

son is normally ridden by Laura Renwick, but

on this occasion Matthew Sampson took the

ride.

Remarkably all these horses are registered

with the Anglo European Studbook, except

Golden Hawk who is licensed with them.

New Young Horse Championship

The team behind Liverpool Horse Show,

headed by Nina Barbour are also the team

behind Bolesworth. Based on the success

of these two shows, British Showjumping

recently announced the move of their Young

Horse Championships to a new show to be run

at the Cheshire showground. This new event

will be run from August 13th-18th and will

incorporate the qualifiers for the Young Horse

World Championships at Lanaken.

The show will also include CSI** international

classes and a British bred foal auction.

All of the characteristics that

distinguish a major sire have

been united in his sire, Dante

Weltino OLD. A fabulous mover,

the 1st Reserve Champion

of the 2009 Oldenburg

licensing in Vechta fulfilled

his performance requirements

in 2012 by qualifying for the

Bundeschampionat in the class

for five-year old dressage

horses. The Hanoverian Verband

also approved the sparkling

black stallion for breeding

that year. Ever since Dante

Weltino OLD’s first foals arrived,

everyone has been talking about

them. In 2018, Duke competed

in a small number of dressage

tests before his departure

for stud but showed great

temperament and achieved

scores over 70% in his first

Novices. In 2018, Duke was

a big competition success,

winning and qualifying Novice

for Regionals, before going to

stud in April. His first crop of

foals were attractive and good

moving types with absolute

charm and presence.

The perfect sport package with

owner and rider from Novice

success at 5 to Inter I success

There is no question that

De Niro, represented by

many offspring at national,

international and Olympic level,

has topped the rankings as a

dressage producer. His biggest

star is probably Desperados

but in London 2012, he was

represented by six offspring.

His combination of gaits and

ridability have made him a

pick for the professional and

amateur alike. Florestan should

need no introduction with the

great success of his F line,

bringing forward the blood of

the great Furioso xx (British

bred by the way). In 2018, in

his first outing, Dvorak qualified

By Cidane and out of the

Burgraaf mare Rosalina,

Jonagold is one of the most

exciting up and coming young

stallions currently competing

on the circuit. Jonagold boasts

3 expressive uphill paces,

masses of scope, endless talent,

braveness and trainability.

Having competed and been

regularly successful in the 4

year old classes throughout

2018, he has had many wins and

only 2 poles down in his 2018

campaign since the start of his

career. He is brave, careful and

has the brain to be able to cope

with even the most electric of

atmospheres. He won both the

Weston Lawns and Bicton young

horse championship 4yo classes

in 2018 as well as jumping in

the Hickstead 4yo final.

He had several wins and was

well placed jumping countless

double clears last season.

Now with frozen and fresh

semen available, Jonagold

would suit high quality mares

from all disciplines.

Tomatillo is a genetic clone of

Tamarillo, the well-known Event

horse, long term member

of the British team and winner

of the Badminton and Burghley

four star Events. Because

Tamarillo, like most Eventers,

was a gelding he has been

cloned so that his special genes

will not be lost. The story of

the cloning can be read on the

Biddesden website - click on

NEWS and then on PRESS.

Tamarillo had particular merits

as a performance horse which

made him worthy to be

cloned: he was a big mover with

a light natural cadence, he was

extremely tough and

agile in testing conditions

and he seemed to find the big

fences easy. Tarnik, Tamarillo’s

sire, was a Polish Anglo Arab, a

many generation blend of

This is the first approved

Hannoverian son of Spoercken,

who was sired by the impressive

Sir Donnerhall out of a Lauries

Crusador dam. The State Stud

at Celle wax eloquent about his

three top gaits and describe him

as the new star in the breeding

sky. We see all those qualities

in his son, Summertime Blues

and our view was confirmed,

not only by his licensing with

Hannover, but also by his win

of top two year old dressage

horse in the Futurity in 2014.

Strongly built with great power

and long lines he shows all

the elasticity and expression

and the Hannoverian Judge,

Dr Christmann, remarked

that he was the image of

his great grand dam, the

mare St Pr Pikantje who was

German National Champion

under saddle. Performance is

everywhere in this pedigree.

Spörcken achieved a dressage

index of 165 in his test.

AES Horses Shine at

the British Breeders’

Awards

We were delighted to celebrate the

achievements of British breeders at this

year’s British Breeders’ Awards Dinner

and Ceremony in London, an annual

event organised by the British Horse

Foundation.

We were particularly proud of the many

AES breeders who received awards and

recognition for their outstanding horses

and youngsters.

The AES Award went to Suma’s Zorro

(Douglas x Horos XX) who was bred

by Marily Power and Susan Lanigan

O’Keeffe. This plucky little mare needs

to introduction, after her superb win

this year at Calgary! We were delighted

that Marily and her brother Robert

were able to travel to London and join

us for the evening.

AES horses of all ages and across all

three disciplines were recognised on

the night:

The Futurity Certificates of Merit

and the Baileys Horse Feeds/British

Breeding Futurity Awards are an

opportunity to celebrate up-andcoming

talent and give an indication of

the exciting stars of the future.

The Baileys Horse Feeds/British

Breeding Futurity Award for the highest

placed foal of the entire Futurity series

in 2018 went to Esme X (Goodyear

VDL x Cadence van t’Gelutt Z) bred

by Aileen Stormonth in Scotland. A

wonderful result for this outstanding

filly who was also selected for the AES

Elite Foal Auction!

Certificates of Merit for the highest

scoring Futurity entries for their age

and disciplines went to:

The dressage foal Crocket

(Quantensprung x Jazz), bred by Nicola

Burton. Crocket was also an Elite

Auction foal, and we were delighted

that her new owner Bev Lynn was able

to pick up his award.

Dankeschoen

The eventing yearling Mesmerize-

Me-SSH (Zumani Decor x Edkinghill),

bred by Rosalyn Serex of Solaris Sport

Horses.

The showjumping two-year-old

Masterclass (For Pleasure x Balou du

Rouet), bred by Keith Lovelock.

The showjumping three-year-old Kylie

(Amaretto LCH Z x Concorde), bred by

Mark Evans of Castell Sport Horses.

But the awards did not stop with the

youngstock.

The British Dressage Young Horse Award

for 5-year-olds went to Kiss and Tell

(Kardinal x Skyscraper van de Derkes)

who was bred by Rebecca Hoare and

is owned by Roland Tong and Angie

Felton.

The British Showjumping Young Horse

Award for 5-year-olds went to Bianca

du Rouet (Statinus x Balou du Rouet),

bred and owned by Helen Rees.

The British Showjumping Young Horse

Award for 7-year-olds went to Cristo

Beech (It’s the Business x Cantero),

who was bred by Derek Moreton and

Geoff Glazzard and is owned by GG

Horses.

And last but not least, the Gornall

Equestrian Award went to Wishes

(Guidam x Wellington), bred and owned

by Claire Inglis.

Congratulations to everyone for

your fantastic achievements, we are

incredibly proud!

AES Genetics

We have been following the latest

developments in genetics research

with great interest, and are serious

about the importance of effective

control of recessive genetic mutations

such as WFFS. We are of the opinion

that rigorous genetic screening and

complete transparency will be vital

tools for future disease control and will

enable us to optimise future breeding

decisions while safeguarding genetic

diversity.

It is for this reason that we recently

made an investment in a state-of-theart

genetic laboratory facility. The

new set up will enable us to collect

and store genetic samples from our

breeding population. We will also

be able to offer our breeders the

opportunity to have their stock tested

at a very reasonable cost by keeping all

these services in house. By collecting

genetic data for analysis, we will build

a highly valuable resource for the

future.

Additions to the AES

Stallions Portfolio

Our latest stallion gradings tour in

November saw some exciting additions

to our stallion portfolio. All stallions

received a detailed linear score profile,

which is published on our database,

providing valuable information to our

breeders.

Among the stallions presented for

their first license was the four-yearold

James Bond (Negro x Donnerhall

x Borneo) bred by Cees Visser and

owned and produced by Luke Norbury.

A very imposing horse with a lovely

large frame, the evaluators really liked

his power and presence, which they

found very reminiscent of the great

Donnerhall himself. His highlight was

a very expressive canter, and a lovely

active walk.

Another young dressage talent is

Kinnear (Franklin x Welt Hit x Grafiet),

a three-year-old stallion bred by

P. Rulkens and owned by Suzanne

Leon and Fiona Langdale. He is

being produced by Emma Woolley of

WSC Dressage. The judges loved his

enormous uphill canter and elastic

trot. He was inspected loose and under

saddle, and is already showing a great

attitude in his work.

It was nice to see a dressage stallion

bred in the UK in the very attractive

Keyland Full Throttle (For Romance x

Goodtimes x Darling Boy XX).

44 | BRITISH BREEDER

Studbook - NEWS

He was bred by Kelly Anderson of

Keyland Stud and is owned and

produced by them. This stallion had a

particularly good walk, and convinced

with beautiful type.

Of particular interest to those breeders

looking for stallions with an already

established performance portfolio will

be two striking stallions based in the

North East at Caunton Manor Stud in

the ownership of Victoria and Matthew

Wright:

Branduardi (Breitling x Weltmeyer)

has been competing successfully with

Amy Woodhead at PSG/Inter I level.

The pair recently showed off their

beautiful partnership at Liverpool,

with Amy electing to ride him in a

snaffle! A powerful stallion who showed

a wonderful attitude and excellent

consistency in the contact. The

evaluators particularly commented on

his expressive and uphill canter.

The fabulous Dankeschön (Danone x

Fidermark), who has already more

than proven his worth in breeding

and the sport in Germany, will be

aimed at Grand Prix this year with

Martin Schleicher. A beautiful stallion

with long lines and striking poise

and expression, he convinced the

evaluators in all three gaits and in

particularly with his outstanding walk.

Both stallions were awarded fully

approved status in recognition of their

performance record.

A splash of colour came from the 2

½ year-old-stallion Freckleton Royal

Affair by Co-Pilot out of a Monte Carlo

x Lauren DVH mare. He showed a

very expressive elastic trot with very

good ground cover, and a very nice

temperament. The stallion was bred by

Penny Roots and is owned by Hilary and

Jo Waterhouse.

Another young dressage stallion

receiving his initial license was

General, owned and bred by Rebecca

Hulme by Governor out of a San Amour

x White Magic mare. He showed one

of the best trots we have seen in

such a young horse, and also a very

balanced canter and a very good active

walk. This stallion also convinced with

beautiful type.

We are delighted to introduce two

exciting young showjumping stallions

presented by Gerda Weston of Weston

Warmbloods. C-Star, bred by Gerda

herself, is a 3yo stallion by Big Star

out of the Tangelo x Lupicor mare

C-Serendipity who is competing

internationally at 1.40m level. A large

framed and athletic horse, he showed

an unbelievable jumping ability, and

C-Star

Folds Director 2

Kinnear

fantastic, powerful and very balanced

paces. The second one is a stallion

bought by Weston Warmbloods who

have just started to produce him. He

has some very interesting breeding:

Kantairo (Kannan x Cicero x Concorde)

is from the half sister of the show

jumping mare Civoli. He showed a

super attitude to jumping and will be

of interest to many breeders with the

very desirable lines of Kannan, Cicero

and Concorde. A really interesting horse

to be graded by us is Folds Director

(Penrhyn Executive x Cholderton

Boreas x Southbrook Diplomat). He

is a pure Cleveland Bay, owned and

produced by Charlotte Springall and

bred by her mother. This stallion will

make an excellent cross with a modern

warmblood or blood type mare to make

a good allround sport horse.

He convinced with his very harmonious

conformation and a lot of power, but

also a wonderful temperament.

He is the first Cleveland bay to be

licensed with the AES, and we hope

that this will give these wonderful

horses another opportunity to prove

that they can make a highly valuable

contribution to modern sport horse

breeding.

Our public gradings are also an

opportunity for stallion owners to

present previously graded stallions

again for an “upgrade”. In those cases,

we take into account the horse’s

presentation on the day, but also their

offspring and competition record to

make a decision whether the horse is

ready to move up to the next level.

The first stallion presented for an

upgrade was Hocus Pocus, a show

jumping stallion by Zambesi x

Vancouver x Silvio, bred and owned by

Joseph Hughes-Jones. We have seen

this horse compete very well in the

young horse classes, and he is now

competing at FEI 1.30m level. We have

also inspected some very nice foals by

him who have gone on to be selected

for the AES Elite Auction and who have

also done very well in national young

stock assessments. Hocus Pocus was

therefore awarded Approved status

with the studbook.

Another horse presented for an upgrade

was Hazelwood Utah’s Romeo (Utah van

Erpekom x Okland x Jasper) a young

stallion bred and owned by Lisa Hall

of Hazelwood Stud. This stallion was

originally awarded registered status.

He was shown under saddle and over a

few fences, and has demonstrated the

progress necessary to move up to fully

licensed status, which means he will

now be available at public stud for up

to 30 mares a year. Congratulations to

all our breeders and stallion owners,

and here’s to a successful 2019 Season!

British Hanoverians

Introduce Several

New Annual Awards

The British Hanoverian Horse Society

is pleased to announce that they have

introduced several new Annual Awards

for successful British Hanoverians

who have had an outstanding season

in their discipline or who have made

an outstanding contribution over the

years.

The first to be recognised was

Headmore Stud’s Rubinsteena, who

was awarded the BHHS Mare of the

Year Award. Rubinsteena, who passed

away during 2018, left behind a huge

dressage dynasty, with her offspring

winning across all levels. The mare

who was by Rubinstein out of a

Donnerhall mare was bred by Bianca

Holsten-Burfeind and owned by Sarah

Oppenheimer for nearly 20 years.

Three new Awards were introduced at

the British Breeders Award Ceremony

which was held at the Grange City

Hotel in London on Saturday 12 January

2019. The Awards were presented

to the most successful British Bred

Hanoverian in Dressage, Show Jumping

and Eventing.

Nicola Williams received the award for

the most successful show jumping BHHS

horse in 2018 with Contendro’s Quest

(Contender I x Raphael x Wendekreis

x Diplomat). Contendro’s Quest has

been competing National at 1.50m and

Internationally at 1.45m with rider

Adrian Whiteway.

Lucy Nelson’s seven-year-old Hester

(Heinrich Heine x Blue Henry) was

presented with the award for the

highest placed BHHS British Bred horse

in Eventing. Hester, owned and bred by

Lucy Nelson is ridden by Jonelle Price

and has won at International 2 Star

(Intermediate).

The Dressage Award was presented to

Judith Davis who bred the ten-yearold

Hawtins Delicato (Diamond Hit

x Regazzoni x Weltmeyer x Bolero),

who is now jointly owned by Carl

Hester, Lady Anne Evans and Ann Cory.

Delicato recently hit the headlines with

Charlotte Dujardin when they danced

their way to second place at Olympia

in December. Delicato’s appearance

at Olympia was only his second ever

Grand Prix freestyle.

Olympia was another huge success

for British Hanoverians with Frederic

Wandres, riding the stunning

eleven-year-old British Hanoverian,

Duke of Britain, claiming the Olympia

Grand Prix Freestyle.

Frederic and Duke of Britain, who is

by Dimaggio, finished their stunning

freestyle on the same score as

Charlotte Dujardin and Hawtins

Delicato. Frederic clinched the victory

after receiving a higher artistic score.

Duke of Britain was bred by Tony and

Sarah Pidgley from Windsor and is by

Dimaggio out of a Rubinstein mare.

Hayley Watson-Greaves and her British

Hanoverian Rubin’s Nite delighted the

crowd with another perfect freestyle

putting them in fourth place. Overall,

British Hanoverians finished 1st, 2nd,

4th, with German Hanoverians Rubin Al

Asad (Rubin Royal x Wanderbursch)

46 | BRITISH BREEDER

2018 Annual Show

The busy summer show season for the

British Hanoverian Horse Society (BHHS)

was concluded on the last week of

September with the 2018 Annual Show

at Keysoe.

The BHHS Committee was joined by Dr

Schade from the Hannoveraner Verband

for what was a very successful event.

The Rhineland mare Sezuki (Sezuan

Christian Heinrich owned by Sandy

Senior of Glossoms Stud, was named as

this year’s Supreme Champion.

The show, which was held at the

College Equestrian Centre at Keysoe

ran for two days from Thursday 27th to

Friday 28th September 2018 and saw

many entries from across the UK

The weekend started with the

presentation of stallions for licensing,

followed by a Mare Performance Test.

The BHHS are pleased to announce

Grand Designs (Grand Galaxy x

Florencio x Sao Paulo), bred by Lynne

Crowden of Woodlander Stud and now

owned by Sylvia Tainton was licensed.

The mare, Sezuki was awarded

Premium Candidate Status following

the Mare Performance Test and

achieving a 1A in the 4-Year-Old Class.

The Gelding/Part Bred Championship

was awarded to Dawn Boyles Don Rafiki

who was bred by Sandra Tinker of

Fosshey Hanoverian Stud with reserve

going to My Booze Cruise owned by

Susan Simmons and handled by Kerry

Schofield. Our Youngstock Champion

award went to Sandy Senior’s Dea

Fortuna GF (Dimaggio x Biotop).

Following our Regional Shows and the

Elite Foal Tour across the UK during the

Summer, some of the qualified foals

were presented at Keysoe in the Foal

Championship. Our Champion Foal,

sponsored by Elite Foals, was Lindsey

Roberts Saskatoon WD (San Amour x

Don Frederico x Weltmeyer).

During the mare classes Woodlander

Stud presented Dorrnroschen (Dimaggio

x Caprimond) who is not only an elite

dressage competitor at international

grand prix, she is also the dam of

double world young horse champion

Woodlander Farouche (by Furst

Heinrich). The judges couldn’t decide

between Dorrnroschen and Sezuki so

they were both awarded the Mare

Champion title for 2018. Concluding

the event was a special commendation

Congratulations to all our competitors,

thank you to the Committee for their

Studbook - NEWS

THE NATIONAL

PONY SOCIETY

It was pleasing to round off 2018

with more success in the dressage

arena for British Riding Ponies. One of

these was the chestnut mare Whalton

Glad Rags and Isabel Platts. The pair

have qualified for the Regionals at

Elementary, and were the Oldencraig

Area Festival Final Champions at

Novice under 21 level and the Novice

Bronze Champions at the Sparsholt

Area Festival Final. The pair will be

competing in both those Nationals

Finals at Hartpury in April, and are

aiming for FEI competition next.

Glad Rags started her career in the

show ring, placing at County level and

at the NPS & BSPS Championships.

When purchased by the Platts she

started competing in unaffiliated

dressage with success, only moving on

to affiliated competition in 2018.

Whalton Glad Rags is a 2008 daughter

of the great sire Kilvington Scoundrel,

a stallion who has been the champion

sire of hacks and riding horses in the

UK for many years. Her dam Groveside

Dexterity was actually competed by no

less than a young Charlotte Dujardin,

and won her SHP class at the Royal

International on two occasions and was

3rd at HOYS. Her sire was the British

Warmblood Dexter the Fourth, a son

of the influential show and dressage

stallion Dallas. Her great damsire is

Enstone Artist, who is also the great

damsire of Kilvington Scoundrel,

thus appearing 4 x 3 in Whalton Glad

Rags’ pedigree. Enstone Artist was

also the sire of champion Riding Pony

broodmares Pendley Loving Cup and

Pendley Birthday Girl.

With breeders making their stallion

selection plans at this time of year,

there are a number of British Riding

Pony stallions who are successfully

producing sport ponies. One of these is

Romanno Stud’s Stanley Grange Regal

Heights, the NPS Young Stallion of the

Year in 2015. He has produced the

Scottish Show Sport Pony Champion

Romanno Destiny, the 2018 SPSS

Supreme Stallion - Wolken Von

Blitz and the 2018 Supreme Youngstock

Champion Romanno Riverdance.

He also has offspring show jumping.

Many German Riding Ponies are in

fact British Riding Ponies when their

bloodlines are explored. The German

licensed but now British based and

NPS licensed Dark Knight, combines

British Riding Pony, Welsh and Arab

blood, albeit with a German badge.

Dark Knight was the BD Vice Regional

Novice Champion and is the full brother

to European Pony Gold Medallist Der

Feine Lord AT and Bundeschampion

Dance Star. Many more members of

this direct family are successful in

sport. Dark Knight and his family are a

classic example of how selected British

Riding Pony bloodlines can excel at the

highest levels in sport. His daughter

Rockwood Ace was presented at the

Futurity in 2018 scoring an excellent

8.5 for her trot and 9 from the vet.

This follows on from the success of his

son Starry Knight being awarded a First

Premium as a foal in 2017.

A list of licensed British Riding Pony

stallions can be found on the NPS

No matter whether you are breeding

an eventer, a show pony or for the

Studbook - NEWS

2018 has drawn to a close

leaving us to review the

Trakehner success stories of

the year.

On the world stage I would say that

one of the most notable was at

the World Equestrian Games in Mill

Spring, North Carolina, where Dalera

BB ( Easy Game x Handryk ) was part

of the German gold medal winning

dressage team, ridden by Jessica Von

Bredow-Werndle.

Ingrid Klimke triumphed in front of

a home crowd, to beat the British

World Champion Ros Canter to

take the indoor eventing derby

at Stuttgart riding the talented

Parmenides (Sir Chamberlin x

Habicht).

At the Montelibretti horse trials in

Italy the CCI*** was won by Fosco

Girardi riding Feldheger ( Betelxx

x Aspirant ) and in Canada at the

Bromont horse trials in Quebec,

Jessica Phoenix won the CIC**

riding Bently’s Best ( Hirtentanz x

Eichendorf ). Back in the dressage

arena the Elite stallion Imperio

(Connery x Isar VI) rounded off

another great season by beating

his son Heuberger (Imperio x

Michelangelo) into second place at

the Oldenberg Grand Prix.

Closer to home Erlentanz ( Latimer

x Benz ) was 3rd in the BD Nationals

Grand Prix and GP Freestyle. With

numerous international placings

during 2018, he is owned and ridden

by Sonnar Murray-Brown.

Kristjan, who is owned and bred

by Dr Wilfred Bechtolsheimer

and ridden by Lara Butler was the

Intermediate II Champion. Although

registered Oldenburg he is in fact a

pure bred Trakehner, by Polarian out

of a Napoleon Quattre mare. Polarian

is the sire of the very successful

eventing stallion Grafenstolz.

The Keatinge Stud have been out

and about competing successfully

with several of their homebred

youngsters. Keatinge Savannah (Lord

Luciano x Sir Shostakovich ), ridden

by Jonny Sutton was Vice Regional

Champion Novice Silver. Hugo Boss

(Oliver Twist x Arentino ) qualified

for BD Nationals and was placed

in the top ten in the Novice Silver

National Championships, once again

ridden by Jonny Sutton.

Godington Stud also had a number

of homebred stock out flying the

flag in 2018. Godington Trinidad

(Godington Hannibal x Maestro)

qualified for the Winter regionals

at Elementary. The Stud’s German

approved stallion Contis (Interconti x

Michelangelo) qualified for the Area

Festival Final at Advanced Medium

and was victorious on his first

Advanced outings. Contis’s graded

son Godington Utah (Contis x Roland)

moved up to BE 100 level. Godington

Pambula (Godington Hannibal x Van

Deyk) had no cross country faults

in 7 BE100 outings and Godington

Trasimeno (Godington Hannibal x

Maestro) had a top ten placing at BE

Intermediate.

HRH Queen Elizabeth II was

successful with her young Trakehner

Donation ( Kentucky x Lord Luciano).

Ridden by Chris Hunnable, Donation

was champion Novice Riding Horse

at County level. Another showing

success was Sacha Shaw’s Volatis

Cruzado ( Schwarzgold x Tycoon )

Champion Riding Horse Breeding at a

number of major county shows.

On the very last day of the year

Zimbabwean Olympian Camilla

Kruger started the competition

career with a first outing for exciting

Top mares of 2018

Congratulations to the owners and

breeders of the highest scoring mares

from our 2018 SHB(GB) mare gradings.

The owners will each receive SHB(GB)

stud vouchers kindly sponsored by B&W

Equine Vets.

This year the two top mares, Billy Buzz

and DHI Party Piece, gained the same

mark (9.93); their owners will each

receive a voucher for £350. Advanced

eventer Billy Buzz (Vechta-Topas)

bred by the Billy Stud was formerly

competed by Charlotte Bacon. She is

now a brood mare owned by Charles

Upham. Dutch-bred DHI Party Piece

(Tolan R-Notaris) is owned by Nick and

Amanda Gauntlett. She is the dam of

the SHB(GB) graded stallions Party Trick

and The After Party both bred by her

owners, as well as the 4* international

jumper DHI Zulu.

Third placed advanced eventer KBIS

Starlet (Pavarotti v/d Helle-Landadel)

Sport Horse Breeding

of Great Britiain

owned by Jo Meyer and Guy and Liz

Prest of KBIS, scored 9.14 and won her

owners a voucher for £300. Formerly

ridden by Izzy Taylor, Starlet completed

both Boekelo and Blenheim CCI3*.

She has a foal by Primitive Proposal

and is in foal to Cevin Z. Fifty three

mares were graded into the stud book

last year and 18 (34%) graded into

the Head Studbook. Thank you to all

our assessors who take time to judge

the mares, owners for bringing mares

forward for grading and to all of those

who host our gradings. This year’s

grading series starts in June. We grade

mares of any breed or origin and the

owners of all mares graded into the

Head Studbook are awarded a £100

voucher towards the registration and

DNA testing of a foal. If you would like

your mare graded into the studbook

or would like to host a mare grading

please contact Marian in the office.

Spring Stallion Grading

THE SHB(GB) spring stallion grading will

take place on Tuesday April 9th at the

West Wilts EC near Melksham. SHB(GB)

welcomes stallions of all types and

breeds to come forward for grading

– we are particularly keen to grade

stallions of native breeds suitable for

breeding sport horses, providing they

are 14.2hh or over and have passed

a grading with the relevant breed

society. All the rules and regulations

for stallion grading can be found on

the website under downloads. If you

intend to bring your stallion forward

please read these first. Please note

that we now request that all stallions

coming forward for grading have to be

tested for WFFS (Warmblood Fragile

Foal Syndrome) and the result declared

with the veterinary paperwork before

the grading.

50 | BRITISH BREEDER

Studbook - NEWS

Warmblood Fragile Foal

Syndrome

A useful presentation on this fatal

disease was well received at the

WBFSH General Assembly in December.

The disease, which is of genetic origin,

causes a lack of collagen meaning the

skin tears easily and joints are lax and

cannot bear weight. WFFS is recessive

and both mares and stallions can

carry the disease without any sign or

impediment to performance. It is only

when two carriers are mated that there

is a risk of an embryo inheriting WFFS

which will either be aborted or the full

term foal will have to be euthanised

shortly after birth.

As from January 1 most European

studbooks have made genetic testing

for the defect mandatory for all

their breeding stallions. SHB(GB) now

requests that all warmblood stallions

graded with the studbook are tested

while stallions coming forward for

grading will have to be tested as part

of the veterinary assessment. The

office can provide details of companies

that do the test. In line with other

studbooks we intend to publish the

results – negative or carrier. We also

advise owners that it is prudent to test

mares before breeding.

A date for the diary

This year’s SHB(GB) National Hunter

Supreme Championship show takes

place at Addington Equestrian from

July 1-3 and once again opens on the

Monday evening with the Sculpture

to Wear Performance Horse Class.

This class, open to three-year-old

fillies, geldings and colts, is judged

on conformation, movement and

athleticism including loose-jumping

style and ability. It offers a prize fund

of £1000 with a generous £500 to the

breeder (who is a member of SHB(GB))

of the highest placed ‘Best Britishbred’

horse in the top five placings.

Bathleyhills Little Miss Sunshine – 2018 Supreme Champion Mare – with owner Penny Walser and judge Hans-Heinrich Brüning

The Best

of the Best

A progressive UK studbook focused on

supporting the breeding, production,

evaluation & licensing of competition

ponies for FEI disciplines. Licensing

stallions, grading mares & evaluating

youngstock with the purpose of

supporting breeders in the UK with

a collective aim of producing truly

WORLD CLASS ponies.

As well as looking forward to 2019 with

anticipation, it’s the time of year to

also reflect on last year’s successes, in

particular those achieved by the ponies

and small horses that were graded or

evaluated by the SPSS. With a good mix

of breeds contributing to the success,

it was great to see that while the

continued efforts of the established

sports pony studs like Romanno and

Bathleyhills were rewarded with

excellent results including Head

Studbook mares and Gold Premium

youngstock, there was also fantastic

success for new SPSS members,

including breeding the top two stallions

and also for pure and part-bred native

ponies. In particular, the SPSS was

delighted to announce that from all

of the mares, stallions and youngstock

inspected by the SPSS in 2018, the

following titles were awarded to the

best ponies and small horses:

The 2018 Supreme Champion Stallion

was the Northern Regional Champion

Wolken Von Blitz MPS.

Known as “Wolter” and a 3 year old at

the grading, he is by the British Riding

Don VHP Z

A superstar discovered at Brendon Stud

BREEDER PROFILE

Shirley Light & Brendon Stud

Brendon Stud

Is part of a family business run by the

Light Family in Sussex, that includes a

thriving competition centre, saddlers,

feed merchants and the stud itself.

Standing stallions and breeding

was a natural progression from the

production of show jumpers that the

family was already successfully doing,

and in 1983 the first stallion, Sussex

Diamond, started his stud career. More

stallions followed over the years,

always progressing in terms of ability

and included Hamilton Tropics (4th

Hickstead Derby), Maestro Nativio

(International competitor and sire of

Hickstead Derby winner Buddy Bunn),

and the ever popular Unbelievable

Darco (Foxhunter Champion &

International 1.50m)

Stallions

Probably the flagship stallion for the

stud has been Don VHP Z, a son of the

great Diamant de Semilly. After a great

start to his British career (winning the

National 6 year old Final at HOYS and

moving on to win international classes

under Louise Pavitt), he was sold to

the Netherlands where under Harrie

Smoulders he has become one of the

most successful show jumpers in the

world. The stud still have frozen semen

from Don VHP available.

Shirley purchased both Don VHP and

another international star – Warrior, as

2 year olds. Both showed powerful and

airy jumps at that age. Warrior was

also produced to international level by

the team at Brendon before being sold

and competing at the 2012 Olympics.

Shirley says that Don VHP had so much

scope, he didn’t need to really try till

he was 8 and the fences got really big,

and then his technique improved to add

to that natural power.

With such a great track record of

spotting talented jumpers at a young

age I asked Shirley if there is one

statement that always stands her in

good stead. She says you must always

judge the horse in front of you before

you look at the papers. No matter how

fancy the pedigree, the horse has to be

an athlete first and foremost.

Mares

In the 1980s the natural assumption

for most British breeders was to use

as broodmares, mares that weren’t

making the grade in sport and had

been injured. Today at Brendon those

type of mares are used as embryo

transfer recipients so the very best

mares can combine both careers, or be

purposely selected for their valuable

contributions to the breeding herd.

One of the best mares Brendon Stud

have bred is Sussex Caretino, an

international Grade A and prolific

winner. Her sire Caretino Glory still

stands at Brendon and has bred

dressage and eventing winners as well

as numerous top level show jumpers.

Her dam, Special to Me is actually the

full sister to the previously mentioned

Hamilton Tropics.

Through embryo transfer, Shirley

has some very nice youngstock from

Sussex Caretino, including the Don VHP

licensed son Klaris Giddy Up. Known as

Krispy at home, the 6 year old will be

taking part at the 2019 Stallion Event.

Shirley says he has taken the very

best attributes from both parents.

A little more size from his sire and a

little more blood from his dam, and

is an absolute Grand Prix horse in the

making.

56 | BRITISH BREEDER

Breeder - PROFILE

Advice

I ask Shirley was advice she would

give to new breeders hoping to breed

a show jumper. She says don’t look at

your own mare with rose tinted glasses,

be critical to her faults and her worth

as a broodmare. Then try and see the

stallion in the flesh. If he is competing

try and go and see him at a show. That

will show you his temperament and

behaviour far better than at home, so

if temperament is important to you,

seeing them in the warm up at a show

is by far the best place.

Shirley adds that a horse’s brain is

important no matter what your aims.

Even the professionals like a horse that

is straight forward. When she is looking

at buying a youngster, Shirley doesn’t

need to take a gamble on a difficult

temperament as there is always

another one for sale.

Homebred stallion Noble Warrior

Looking forward to 2019

Shirley is particularly excited about

two 4 year olds they are bringing out

this season. One is by Don VHP and

the other by Noble Warrior out of a

Hamilton mare. Both are stallions and

will stand at stud this year. They seem

incredibly talented with superb brains.

There are also 8 foals due, all by

Brendon Stud stallions. After ending

up with 7 colts and only 1 filly last

year, Shirley is hoping the sex balance

is a little bit better this year. Shirley

never lets herself get excited about the

unborn foals until they are safely on

the ground, and even then knows there

are still 4 years to get through before

their talent can be tested in the arena.

Shirley is also looking forward to seeing

the homebred stallion Noble Warrior

competing with Phillip Miller this

season. He has impressed her with his

‘cracking foals’. He always passes on

his hind end and lovely length of neck,

a great length of stride, and is adding

more blood than you might expect, to

produce lovely rangy foals. The stud

is offering British mare owners semen

from stallions that range from the one

of the best horses in the world, to

young first season sires that combine

the best of the Brendon bloodlines,

plus new injections of blood that are

bought in (such as the Untouchable

son Usher Van Overis Z). As producers

of so many successful sport horses,

riders and breeders know to head down

to Sussex to source their future stars,

ensuring Brendon Stud will continue

to be a focus point of successful show

jumping breeding for many years to

come.

GREAT

BRITISH

BROODMARES

‘Annagroff’.

Over the winter of 2018/2019 William

Funnell brought out yet another

homebred superstar at CSI***** level.

This was Billy Diamo, a son of Cevin

Z, out of the homebred AES registered

mare Annagroff.

Annagroff’s sire was the International

competitor Andiamo, who was

famed for his scope and electric

jumping technique. He passed on a

lot of character and blood (thanks

to his anglo arab motherline) making

his offspring more suitable for

professionals. His sire Animo was a top

Olympic level competitor.

William Funnell and Billy Birr at Eindhoven 2008

Annagroff’s dam Halla also produced

her full siblings Billy Birr (by Animo)

who competed at the World Equestrian

Games in 2010, and Billy Burgundy (by

Animo) who competed at 1.40m level.

The damsire Burggraff was Holstein

bred but became the best Dutch

representative of his immortal sire

Landgraf, and was known as a stallion

who passed on power and size.

Billy Diamo is not the only talented

jumper that Annagroff has produced:

Sire Andiamo

Billy Tudor

2002 - Billy Graff – by Vechta - over £1300 prize money, jumping

1.15 – 1.20m opens with an amateur rider

2006 – Billy Anna – by La Poco - over £6500 winnings - jumping

1.20 – 1.30m opens with an amateur rider

2007 – Billy Halla – by Billy Congo – won Big Star qualifier and 5 and 6

hunter, jumped double clears Foxhunter and Newcomers

2010 – Billy Diamo – by Cevin Z – International show jumper, placed

Olympia 2018. Winnings of over £22,000 to date

With Billy Diamo making an impact at

5 star level and the young stallion Billy

Tudor already winning internationally,

Annagroff has already made a name for

herself as a serious producer.

The Billy Stud have recognised this

and have a number of embryo transfer

youngsters waiting in the wings, so I

expect Annagroff will be making even

more of an impact on British show

jumping in the next few years.

GORNALL

EQUESTRIAN

Gornall Equestrian’s “Home Farm”

base set in 15 acres of countryside

between the spa town of Harrogate and

historic York is home to International

Showjumper Jamie Gornall and his

team of top-class horses.

Jamie and his wife Averil, a successful

interior designer, have sympathetically

modified the charming and traditional

English agricultural buildings with the

best of modern facilities from across

the globe to transform the former dairy

farm into an elite showjumping yard

that is amongst the best in Europe.

Jamie spent over 10 years riding

for and training with some of the

best riders in the world including Di

Lampard, MBE, Janne Friederike Meyer,

Ludger Beerbaum and John Whitaker,

MBE before setting up his base in North

Yorkshire at the end of 2015.

Over the last 3 years Jamie has built up

a strong team of horses ranging from

young horses coming through into the

sport to those competing at 5* Grand

Prix level. Combined with Jamie’s

knowledge and passion for breeding

has seen Gornall Equestrian build up a

strong collection of stallions.

One of these breeding stallions who

is also one of Jamie’s main Grand Prix

horses, is the striking 12 year old grey

Holstein stallion Christian 25, who was

previously based in Germany at the

Bockmann Stud. Whilst in Germany he

predominantly focused on breeding

after achieving the highest scores in

his 30 day test for his stallion licensing,

including four 10s.

Christian’s pedigree is full of top

competition horses; his sire Cartani

is the result of breeding two of the

world’s best showjumpers – twotime

Olympic stallion Carthago Z

and 1994 World Equestrian Games

team gold winner Taggi. A Holsteiner

Premium Stallion noted for his scope,

his hind leg technique, and perfect

conformation, Cartani was a member

of the Danish team on numerous

occasions including the 2013 European

Championships. Christian’s dam Free

Lilly (competed as Who Knows Lilly)

competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Christian is a tall, athletic, modern

model of a showjumping stallion who

passes on his rideability, fantastic

movement and confirmation, and huge

careful scope to his youngstock. He has

bred some impressive offspring that are

already beginning to prove themselves

in the sport despite his first progeny

only being born in 2012.

In November 2014 a Christian son, Oak

Grove’s Che, out of a Check In mare,

was licensed for OS-International.

As a 5 year old Che competed at

the World Championships for young

horses and won on the opening day of

the prestigious Bundeschampionate

in Germany. In 2018 he competed in

CSIYH* classes with several clear rounds

and placings internationally.

Christian daughters have also proved

popular with Cinderella and La Marron

being price highlights for jumping

horses at two Oldenburg auctions in

2018.

62 | BRITISH BREEDER

La Marron was champion at the

Oldenburg mare grading in 2017 as a 3

year old, now broken to ride and going

well she sold at the Vechta auction at

the beginning of 2018 for €141,000.

Since moving to Gornall Equestrian

and being based in the UK Christian

has been focusing more on competing

and is making himself known on the

International jumping circuit, having

been selected to represent Team GB up

to 5* level in 2018. Jamie and Christian

enjoyed a successful 2018 jumping

up to 1m60 tracks, with good results

including finishing 4th at Budapest

CSIO5* in the World Cup qualifier

(1m60), jumping double clear at

Hickstead CSIO5* and coming 2nd at the

Great Yorkshire Show in the prestigious

“Cock O’The North”.

Most recently Jamie has welcomed

Cassionato – one of the sport’s most

talented horses – to his North Yorkshire

yard. This highly successful stallion,

who was part of the British team under

Michael Whitaker at the 2016 Olympic

Games and helped Britain to victory in

the CS105* Furusiyya FEI Nations Cups

at La Baule, Rotterdam and Rome, will

join Jamie’s team of elite equestrian

athletes.

“I am extremely excited that

Cassionato is here and look forward

to building up a strong relationship

with him as we aim for the 2019

European Championships and Tokyo

2020,” said Jamie. “He has some

illustrious bloodlines, incredible ability

and a brilliant temperament. He will

fit in extremely well with our other

competition horses here at Gornall

Equestrian.”

This fantastic horse, with incredible

jumping talent, was sired by Cassini

I, who was a member of the Danish

Nations Cup team in Helsinki and

represented Denmark at the European

Championships. He also sired the 2006

World Equestrian Games champion

Cumano. Cassionato’s damsire is the

brilliant Selle Francais stallion Quidam

de Revel, a member of France’s

bronze medal-winning team in the

1992 Barcelona Olympics who also had

countless Grand Prix and Nations Cup

successes.

Cassionato is owned by Gary and

Beverley Widdowson, who also own

the legendary Big Star, and Jamie’s

father-in-law, Chris Blundell, who has

just bought a 50% share in him. “I am

delighted to have invested in a horse

of this calibre and thrilled that he will

be stabled at Gornall Equestrian,” said

Chris. “Jamie has some of the finest

training facilities in Europe and I am

confident that his analytical approach

to horsemanship and commitment to

the happiness and wellbeing of his

horses will see Cassionato thrive. I,

along with Gary and Beverley, am

really looking forward to seeing this

spectacular horse doing great things

this year.”

Both Christian & Cassionato will be

available for fresh/chilled semen

in 2019 around their competition

schedules with UK & EU frozen semen

Garuda K

There are some breeders who

want a stallion to have a strong

performance record and there is no

better record than an International

Grand Prix track record.

The Trakehner stallion Garuda K

between 2013 and 2014 progressed

from his international small tour

debut at Drachten (placed 4th)

through to a run of Grand Prix

and Grand Prix Special results.

Nationally he was Vice Regional

Champion at Inter 1 and at PSG

Freestyle, won at Premier League

shows, and qualified for the

Nationals from Advanced Medium

through to Grand Prix. He was also

3rd at two Winter Championship

Finals at PSG and Inter 1.

Most recently the young

paradressage rider Laura Gulliver

has taken over the ride on the

striking chestnut stallion, who is

also the sire of her other top ride

Woodcroft Natalia. In addition to

being licensed with the Trakehner

Verband in Germany he is also

licensed with the Westfalian

Verband and was Reserve Champion

of the Warmblood Breeders Society

Grading, and is available to mare

owners in the UK chilled and

frozen.

The pedigree of Garuda K is studded

with Elite stallions and mares. His

sire Munchhausen was the 2011

Trakehner Stallion of the Year. He

started his career by being crowned

the Champion of his licensing in

1997 and then headed the dressage

section of his performance test in

Neustadt-Dosse. When he started his

competition career, he qualified for the

Bundeschampionate on many occasions

and was the Silver Medalist at the

Young Horse World Championships.

He progressed via the prestigious

Nuernberger Burgpokal Finals to Grand

Prix, was part of the bronze medal

winning Danish team at the European

Championships and won many Grand

Prix competitions.

Although he was concentrating on

a career in sport he still managed

to sire 7 approved sons, including

Sambatanzer and Meraldik, and Grand

Prix performers such as Santurion de

Massa, Herbstfee and Moncassado.

Munchhausen is a son of the famous

Hohenstein, sire of His Highness,

Insterberg TSF and was 2002 Trakehner

Stallion of the Year. Garuda K’s damsire

is the Elite stallion Angard, who also

competed to Grand Prix. His great

grand dam Gletschersonne was a half

Thoroughbred mare and from this very

small mare line also comes the M level

performer Guaya.

Ovarian

Abnormalities

L.J. Brock BVSc Cert AVP (ESM)

MRCVS - Pinkham Equine

The ovary and structures within it play

an essential role in the breeding cycle

of mares. It is not only important to

understand the normal physiology of

the ovary but also be aware of some of

the abnormalities that occur, how these

are diagnosed and what can be done to

resolve them.

Probably the most common ovarian

abnormality seen are anovulatory

follicles. These are dominant follicles

that, due to various failures in the

hormone cascade, fail to ovulate.

Anovulatory haemorrhagic follicles

(AHF) are by far the most common

(85%). These appear thick walled,

often irregular in shape and contain

hyperechoic fibrin strands or speckles

seen on ultrasound. Luteal tissue

within the wall of these follicles will

start to produce progesterone (>1ng/

ml). Persistent anovulatory follicles are

less common and appear as relatively

normal looking follicles that continue

to grow without ovulating. These do

not produce progesterone. In either

case changes can be subtle, gradual in

onset and take an experienced eye to

diagnose. It is strongly advisable not to

breed on these follicles if time allows.

Even in the rare event of an ovulation,

the quality of the oocyte produced is

questionable and pregnancies are likely

to be lost in the early stages. Persistent

anovulatory follicles will often regress

spontaneously. AHFs contain luteal

tissue making them sensitive to

Prostaglandin (PG) administration.

They may take longer to sensitise

than normal corpus lutea and waiting

9-10days from onset is advised.

A persistent corpus luteum (CL) can

delay breeding. This can be caused

by a lack of endogenous PG release

(idiopathic) or loss of an early

pregnancy. Knowledge of days since

ovulation is essential to knowing when

a delay in oestrus has occurred. Blood

progesterone levels (>1ng/ml) are

of use especially if the presence of

a CL is questionable on ultrasound.

Administration of exogenous PG will

cause luteolysis allowing the breeding

cycle to resume.

Para ovarian cysts are fluid filled

structures arising from the tissues next

to the ovaries. While they do not affect

cyclicity they can grow to relatively

large sizes and may be confused with

a dominant follicle. Repeated scanning

will confirm their continued presence

and consistent size. Epithelial inclusion

cysts are small cystic structures formed

from the ovarian epithelium. Clusters

of these are often seen in older mares

and should not affect cyclicity.

Anovulatory Haemorrhagic Follicle

Ovarian tumours are rare, the most

common being the granulosa cell

tumour (GCT). These are hormonally

active and arise from the stroma of the

ovary. On ultrasound the affected ovary

may appear large and honeycombed in

appearance. Due to the production of

the hormone inhibin which suppresses

follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)

release from the pituitary gland,

Granulosa cell tumour

follicular growth in the contralateral

ovary is suppressed and it will appear

small and inactive. Behavioural changes

may be associated with excess hormone

production the most common being

testosterone which can cause stallion

like behaviour. Anti-Mullerian Hormone

(AMH) levels are raised in 95% of

GCTs making this blood test, together

with a more comprehensive hormone

panel, the mainstay of diagnosis.

Surgical removal of the affected ovary

should allow resumption of normal

cyclicity in the supressed ovary.

Other less reported tumours include

cystadenomas, which are tumours of

the epithelial surface and teratomas

which arise from germ cells within the

ovary. These can become large and are

often only diagnosed following surgical

removal.
