The Offertory Prayer

O Lord, focus our eyes that we may see. Open our ears that we may hear.

Sharpen our minds that we may understand. Sensitize our wills that we

may respond. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord, we present these offerings as our partial response to your

great commission to go and make disciples of all nations. Follow

them with your blessing, we pray, and accept our rededication to our

responsibilities as your disciples.

Divine love through me blesses and multiplies all that I have, all

that I give, and all that I receive, in the name of Jesus. Amen

The Authority of the Son

19 Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, the Son

can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the

Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son

does likewise. 20 The Father loves the Son and

shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will

show him greater works than these, so that you will be

astonished.

The Wall of Honor

Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and

donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and

beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our

veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing

us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.

New names are added to the Wall of Honor every Veteran’s Day. If you, a loved one, or

a friend served in the armed forces and would like to be added to the Wall, please

complete the Wall of Honor form located in the Literature Rack and place it in the Wall of

Honor mailbox outside the Sanctuary. God bless you.

MATURE DISCIPLES MINISTRY

BRIEF HISTORY

Zelma Smith-Dexter and Muriel Eaton approached Reverend Dr. Carlyle Fielding

Stewart, III, in January 1999 regarding a Hope Church senior group. Reverend Betty

Whitely was appointed by Dr. Stewart to form a ministry for persons fifty and older.

Reverend Whitely selected ten seasoned Hope members to meet June 25, 1999, with Dr.

Stewart in attendance. Dr. Stewart gave encouragement by saying this was the

beginning of a great adventure and asked to be an honorary member. All 50 plus

persons male and female are welcome to be a part. Our purpose is to give support and

have camaraderie with those who have similar experiences and interests through

religious, social and educational activities; like short bus trips, educational forums,

crafts, bake sales, seminars, workshop and nursing home visits. We have added Black

History exhibits, Senior Day during the Southfield Festival of Hope, Grandparents’

Luncheon, a prayer breakfast and Christmas luncheon. Our meetings are held the

second Tuesday of each month at one o’clock or join us for any of our activities.

June 23, 2019 is the celebration of our 20 th anniversary. God continues to bless our

ministry spiritually and in all of our many endeavors.

MISSION STATEMENT

Mature Disciples are a Holy-Spirit directed body of matured Christian believers who are

spiritually developed and committed to studying, sharing and living the Word of God.

This ministry will extend spiritual, educational and social in reach and outreach

activities to Hope United Methodist Church, local churches and the larger community,

demonstrating their faith and the beauty of longevity through their dedicated lifestyle

and service to others.

VISION STATEMENT

Mature Disciples will inspire others through reflections, prayers and experiences and

demonstrate commitment to God by the way we live and serve Hope United Methodist

Church and the community.

Dr. Emma L. Epps and Mary Powell-Wright, Co-Chairs

The Reverend Christopher Grimes, Clergy Advisor
